VIETNAM GEOTECHNICAL DAY 18 JUNE 2010

Hanoi, 29th May 2010

1. Introduction

Fifty years ago in Hanoi, on June 1960, the first generation of Vietnamese civil engineers
founded the Geotechnical Group to work together to develop Soil Mechanics and Foundation
Engineering in Vietnam. They were Prof. Le Quy An, Prof. Nguyen Ba Ke, Prof. Le Duc
Thang, Prof. Vu Cong Ngu, Prof. Nguyen Van Quang, Prof. Nguyen Van Quang, Prof Le Ba
Luong, Prof. Le At Hoi, Prof. Nguyen Van Quy, Prof. Nguyen Van Dinh, Prof. Cao Van Chi,
Prof. Phan Tuong Phiet, Prof. Bui Anh Dinh, Prof Nguyen Tho, Prof Ho Chat, Dr. Nguyen
Trap, Dr. Le Van Thu and others. They were founders of VSSMGE today.

Thirty years ago, in 1980 , the Vietnamese Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation
Engineering (VSSMGE) was established in Hanoi, Vietnam. The keymembers are from Hanoi
Civil Engineering University, Institute for Building Science and Technology, Hanoi Water
Resource University, Hanoi Architect University, Hanoi Mining and Geology University,
Researcher, Consulting Institutes and Companies from Sectors of Construction,
Transportation, Water Resources…

In 1985, with the help and support from the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI), VSSMGE
became a member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering
(ISSMGE).

Fifteen years ago, on 18 June 1995 VSSMGE, Vietnamese Society for Rock Mechanic and
Vietnamese Society for Geology were together agreed to establish Vietnamese Geotechnical
Institute (VGI). On year later on 18 June 1996, the First Vietnamese Geotechnical Journal
(VGJ) was publicated.

Four years ago VSSMGE to be member of AGSSEA, we have been working in more closed
cooperation with ASEAN, Hongkong, Taipei and other country in the region.

In 2010, Vietnam celebrate 1000 years of Thang Long – Hanoi. In this important year,
VSSMGE and VGI would like to make the Organization of Vietnamese Geotechnical Day.

Our objectives are:

  To make presentations, lectures and lesion learned and contribution to the
development of Geotechnical Engineering.
 To share our visions, innovations, experience, knowledge, skills, and activities in order
to continue to develop Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Vietnam. We
will have keyspeakers from Vietnam, ASEAN, Sweden, Canada, Japan,USA… to
deliver distinguishes lectures.
 To make the Ceremony for 15 years of VSG and 14 years of VGJ.
 To organize the VSSMGE Congress and to elect the new Leadership of VSSMGE
 To publish the proceeding of Vietnamese Geotechnical day.
 To publish special publications of VGJ in Vietnamese and English.
 To make the technical exhibition and technical presentation on SMGE
 To establish the Vietnamese Geotechnical Club.
 To strengthen our friendship, understanding, as well as to promote the development of
SMGE.

On behalf of VSSMGE, we would like to invite our friends, colleagues, organizations,

companies and all people, who love Soil, water, air, environment, cultural and engineering
value to participate in Vietnamese Geotechnical Day in order to build up a better quality
of life, as well as a better world for sustainable development and Green Society.

2. Place and Time

The Vietnamese Geotechnical Day will be held in Military Guest House, 33A Pham Ngu
Lao, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi City on 18 June 2010. This Hotel is located in Center of
Hanoi and historical, cultural places, monuments, and museum
