Installing the 2K

Foreword
This document provides information necessary for installing the da Vinci 2K color
enhancement system. It covers information common to all 2K installations with
emphasis on specific telecines including the Cintel URSA, C-Reality and the Thomson
Spirit Datacine. Information covering installation of other types of telecines including
Sony is provided in companion publications.

Basic Connections
FUNDAMENTAL AC POWER CONSIDERATIONS
Reliable operation of any computer requires continuous power. Because power problems
are the most common cause of data loss, use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
with all 2K systems is recommended. Interruption of power even for an instant can be
expensive in terms of lost work, and may cause unpredictable results in video information
processing. Power problems that are sometimes present on commercially supplied power
mains may not even be noticed. An uninterruptible power for the 2K is suggested to
assure reliable video and data output. AC power line conditioning using a quality UPS is
required for error free Linux PC Workstation operation during power sags, spikes, surges
and blackouts. Appendix A lists suitable UPS equipment. In the event of power failure,
the UPS will keep the Linux PC Workstation and Monitor running long enough to save
all data and provide time for an orderly system shut down. Equipment not protected by a
UPS should at least have surge suppressers. See Appendix A for more details on overall
system power requirements.
PHYSICAL SETUP
The 2K Digital Color Enhancement System combines two groups of equipment: the
control system and the processing system. The control system is located at operator’s
position and is made up of the control panels and displays. It is usually remote from the
2K mainframe processing system. The control panels direct the operation of other
equipment such as record, playback VTR’s, and the telecine equipment. The 2K with the
da Vinci User Interface (DUI) consists of the following control system;
• Three control panels: the Soft Panel, Joyball Panel and Dedicated
Keyboard Panel (Figure 1) provide color correction and equipment
control.
• The Linux PC, computer graphic display monitor, keyboard and
mouse initialize the system. The Linux Workstation is the platform for
the control system and the da Vinci User Interface. See Appendix B.
• The 2K is equipped with TLC editing. If the optional TLC Assistant is
acquired, a TLC keyboard and monitor may be included.

CONTROL PANEL ARRANGEMENT

The control panels may be positioned in any sequence. The arrangement
shown in Figure 1 is the one most commonly used. The control panel’s
DC power supply must be mounted within fifteen feet of the three panels.
The control panel’s DC power supply automatically adapts to 110 or 220
volts AC input power. The mainframe power supply input voltage is auto
sensing for 110 or 220 volts AC.
The control panels can sit on a table top or desk, or can be mounted in
cutouts for a more “sleek” appearance. The control panel power supply
mounts in a standard 19” equipment rack. The 2K mainframe and the
Linux PC Workstation communicate by a dedicated Ethernet network. No
other Ethernet devices should be connected to the 2K network with out
consulting da Vinci Systems. The 2K controls real-time video machinery
and must have a dedicated Ethernet network to avoid control command
delays. A separate 50-ohm daisy-chained coaxial cable terminated on
both ends is required. See hookup diagrams in Appendix B and C.
The Linux PC is normally placed somewhere near the operator’s position.
The front of the Linux PC must be available for access to the reset &
power switches and CD ROM tray.
In most installations, the monitor will sit near the Linux Workstation.
Care should be taken to keep it within about 6′ (180 cm) to accommodate
the standard connecting cables. See Appendix A for suppliers of extension
cables if desired. The 2K User Interface software manages the overall
operation of the 2K. The Linux Workstation keyboard is used to input text
and numerous setup commands to the 2K interface.

SYSTEM INTERCONNECTIONS
Three keyboards and three control panels direct the operation of the 2K.
Refer to Appendix C for equipment connections and Appendix E for
equipment interconnection details. There could be a potential to have up
to 4 keyboards. One comes with the Workstation, the second is built-in to
4 Installing the 2K

the Dedicated Keyboard panel, the third for Gallery PC operations

(typically black), and the fourth for the TLC Assistant (Optional). The
TLC keyboard has color-coded keycaps and connects to the TLC PC by an
extender cable. The extender cables allow the user to place the keyboard
and a VGA computer monitor at the control panel location. The other
keyboard connects directly into the back of the Workstation. The
Workstation, Gallery PC, TLC PC, and all three da Vinci control panels
communicate with the 2Kmainframe and the Linux Box by a dedicated
Ethernet network. No other Ethernet devices should be connected to the
2K control network. The 2K color correction system controls real time
video and must use a dedicated and separate 50-ohm daisy-chained coaxial
wiring cable. Termination (50 Ω) is required at both ends of the Ethernet
cable. This cable should have only da Vinci approved equipment
connected to it. The keyboard located in the Dedicated Keyboard panel
requires no setup.

MAINFRAME MOUNTING AND MAINFRAME POWER SUPPLY LOCATION

The 2K is designed for installation in a 19” equipment rack 25” deep
located in a restricted access area. This restricted access area will be
available only to trained service personnel. Servicing the 2K requires
removal of the front door, which is secured by pressure fit hardware. The
front door provides the only access possible. The 2K front door must
always be in place during operation to prevent high current electrical
hazard, EMI / RFI problems and to provide dust free filtered air for the 2K
cooling system.
The 2K is 10 rack units (10U) high and must be mounted in the equipment
rack so as to prevent a hazardous condition of uneven mechanical load of
the equipment rack. Equipment slides should not be used. A removable
power supply is located inside the 2K frame. Rear support of the 2K is not
necessary.
An ambient incoming air temperature of 15° to 25° Celsius must be
maintained in front of the 2K frame door. Installation of the 2K frame
must guarantee and maintain, unrestricted airflow sufficient for safe
operation. Never place equipment behind the frame that might restrict the
exhaust air of the 2K fans.
A set of ventilation fans draw air in through the front door of the 2K
mainframe and exhausts it through the back of the assembly. Equipment
behind the mainframe must not block air exhaust of the mainframe. Leave
clearance behind the 2K mainframe to access the honeycomb air filters.
Periodic removal and cleaning are recommended. The top and both side
panels are solid and require no clearance for cooling. Refer to Appendix
D for size and weight information. The mainframe houses the computer
control boards and all video digital signal processing boards.
Installing the 2K 5

AC line power must maintain proper earth ground. Particular attention must
be given to the AC power connection to assure that the safety ground is not
compromised. Two wire extension cords of two wire power strips should
not be used.

CAUTION: For continued protection against risk of fire, replace only with same
type and rating of fuse.

EMI AND SAFTEY COMPLIANCE

The 2K mainframe, control panels and power supplies comply with EN
55022 EMI specifications when properly installed. The CE marking
indicates conformity to the European EMI standards. This equipment also
meets other standards including the United States FCC Part 15 Class A.
The control panels are designed for use on a table top and have no EMI
installation requirements when used with the da Vinci power supply. The
front door of the 2K must also be in place. A system wide grounding plan
is also recommended. The 2K system complies with European Safety and
EMC standards as well.

Machine Control
Machine control connections to the 2K vary somewhat between systems
depending on whether they are tape-to-tape only, telecine programmer
only, or full-featured Digital Picture Processing systems. The standard 2K
provides up to 15 serial control ports.

VTR
There are 15 serial ports available for VTR control. Some of these ports
may be used for telecine control as well. So the type of telecine you have
will determine the total number of free ports available for VTR use. One
port is also normally assigned to be a DDR for the Gallery Still Store. And
ports may also be used for noise reducer control and perhaps other
peripheral devices.

TELECINE
Telecine applications require a number of additional cables between the
telecine and the mainframe. See Appendix B for connection details.
These vary depending on the telecine model. The necessary cables are
supplied by da Vinci. Be sure to notify Customer Service if the standard
10 meter length will not be adequate for your installation. For more
details, please contact da Vinci Customer Service.
6 Installing the 2K

NOISE REDUCER
The noise reducer option provides scene-by-scene control of serial
controlled noise / grain reducers. It is possible to control up to 2 noise /
grain reducers simultaneously. Each noise / grain reducer (except
Thomson Scream) under 2K control will require one of the 15 available
serial ports. The following devices are currently supported: Accom
DIE125/125M, Philips / BTS / Thompson, MNR9, MNR10, VS4, and
Scream, Digital Vision DVNR500-422, DVNR1000-422 and DVNR1000-
4x4 utilizing B11 Protocol and DVNR1000-HD utilizing Protocol G and
G Protocol, Primal, and Teranex StarFilm.
GPI and GPOs.
A GPI (General Purpose Interface) system provides 16 fully
programmable normally open, normally closed, momentary, or pulsed
open-collector TTL switch outputs. There are 15 GPI TTL inputs. GPI is a
standard feature.

Video Input (See Appendix A)

The 2K has the following video signal input possibilities:
Two sets of serial SDTV inputs on 2 groups of four BNC connectors marked A, B, C
and D. SDTV Input 1 is standard. SDTV Input 2 is optional
Two sets of serial HDTV inputs on 2 groups of two BNC connectors marked A and
B. HDTV inputs are optional

SDTV component digital video inputs are connected to the SDTV A, B, C

and D connectors. The A and B inputs are used for dual link video
formats. The C input is used for 422. The D input is used for an external
key signal. See the 2K detailed specification table in Appendix A. The
standard processing package will utilize the Input 1 group of connectors.
The optional 2nd Input board would utilize the Input 2 group of connectors.
All SDTV inputs are terminating, and no loop through feeds are provided.
HDTV component digital video inputs are connected to the HDTV A and
B connectors. The HDTV option will provide one pair of inputs (A1 and
B1) on the main input board. The optional 2nd Input board would provide a
second pair of inputs (A2 and B2). All provisioned HD inputs have active
reclocked loop through feeds available on the Loop Out connectors.
Note: Without the optional 2nd Input board, you can have either a 422
HDTV signal connected, or a 444 HDTV signal connected, but not both at
once.
The 2K will accept dual link HDTV/SDTV in both YCrCb + key or RGB
+ key data format.
Installing the 2K 7

Video Output (See Appendix A)

The 2K with a signal processing package has the following video signal
output possibilities:
4 pairs of SDTV link outputs. All SDTV outputs are standard with a
processing package. In 422 output mode, 422 outputs are available on A
and C output pairs. In dual link output modes, outputs are on the A and B
pairs. Key outputs are available on B and D connectors.
2 groups (A and B) of 3 HDTV outputs are available with the HDTV
option. In 422 output mode, 422 is available on the A and B outputs. In
444 output mode, A link signal is on the A outputs and B link signal is on
the B outputs.
See Appendix A for connections for all modes of operations.
A set of analog data monitor outputs provides an interlaced RGB monitor
video during HDTV processing or non-interlaced in data mode. Both
horizontal and vertical pulses provide synchronization for video monitors
on the HD Sync and VD Sync BNC connectors.

Data Input (See Appendix A)

The 2K with a signal processing package has the following Data input
possibilities:
A pair of serial fiber HIPPI inputs with the Data option.
The ability to use the HDTV A and B link coaxial inputs to input HSDL
(High Speed Data Link) formatted data with the HSDL Data option (also
requires the HDTV option).

Data Output (See Appendix A)

The 2K with a signal processing package has the following Data output
possibilities:
A pair of serial fiber HIPPI outputs with the Data option.
The ability to use the HDTV A and B link coaxial outputs to output HSDL
(High Speed Data Link) formatted data with the HSDL Data option (also
requires the HDTV option).
8 Installing the 2K

Picture and Waveform Monitoring

Connections for picture monitoring with the 2K vary depending on the
type of monitor and other equipment used (routing switchers, encoders,
etc.). Some monitors have a digital input that is very useful. It should be
noted that the 2K has an RGB analog output to monitor data. The parade
oscilloscope feed is used for monitoring the SDTV or HDTV video
signals. Most current noise reducers have analog outputs that can be used
even when the main signal is being processed in the digital domain. Some
facilities may prefer to include some other D to A conversion equipment.
An analog output is provided for a four channel sequential display on a
waveform monitor. There are actually three signals associated with this
feature. The first is the waveform signal itself, called parade video. It is a
standard 700 mv video signal. It sequences on a line-by-line basis from Y
to R to G to B. The second signal is a four-step dc staircase with the
industry standard 10 volt swing. It is used by the waveform monitor to
position each of the four signals of the video parade at a specific place on
its CRT. Waveform monitors are normally configured for three channel
parade operation. Links should be selected within the WFM to select four
channel mode. Refer to the scope manufacturer’s manual for connection
details for this signal. The third related signal is called parade sync. This
should be used as external sync for the parade WFM.

Miscellaneous
For Dual Sync mode editing with the internal TLC editor, a customer
provided 6HZ reference pulse must be connected to the GPI Input
connector on pin 10, ground on pin 25.

General Installation
POSITIONING THE EQUIPMENT
Begin installation by placing the equipment in its final position. This
includes rack-mounting the mainframe and Gallery PC and organizing the
various items on the operator’s desk. The mainframe and gallery PC are
normally mounted in the machine / equipment room near the telecine (if
present). The daVinci supplied 2K to telecine interconnect cables are 10
meters in length, so the mainframe should be close enough to the telecine
for 10 meter cables to reach. At the operators desk, you will have the
following: Linux PC with a keyboard and mouse and 17” LCD display, 3
2K control panels and a rack mountable power supply for the control
panels. The control panel power supply cables are approximately 5 meters
long. So it will need to be located within this distance from the control
panels. There is a power switch on the front of the supply, so it would be
convenient if the supply could be rack mounted in a location that allowed
access to the power switch and is within 5 meters of the control panels.
You may also want to have a keyboard, mouse and display for the Gallery
PC remoted to the operators desk (extending these is done by customer
provided equipment). The 2K keyboard control panel has a slide out
ASCII keyboard. This is normally used instead of the Linux attached
keyboard. So the Linux attached keyboard can be placed out of sight, if
desired (but needs to remain connected to the Linux PC at all times). The
2K joyball control panel has a trackball that can be used as a mouse, in
place of the mouse connected to the Linux keyboard. The choice of which
to use is user dependant. If you have the optional TLC Assistant
workstation, place it as well. It consists of a Linux PC with mouse and
custom TLC keyboard. It also requires a customer provided display that
supports a 1280x1024 resolution.
CONNECTING THE EQUIPMENT (See Appendix C for a detailed connection
drawing)
Frame and Panels Ethernet Connections
2-100’ CAT5 Ethernet cables are provided to connect the Linux PC to the
2K mainframe and the Gallery PC. Uniquely label these cables at each end
and run them between the Linux PC location and the mainframe / Gallery
PC location. At the Linux PC location, a Centrecom MR420TR multiport
micro hub/repeater is provided to facilitate the network connections
between the Linux PC and the mainframe and control panels. Connect one
of the 100’ CAT5 cables to port 2 of the MR420TR. The other end of this
cable will connect to the CAT5 port on the rear of the 2K mainframe
labeled “2K O2”. Connect port 1 of the MR420TR to the CAT5 network
connector on the Linux PC which is located in an add-on slot (not the built
in connector!).
10 Installing the 2K

The 3 dedicated 2K control panels interconnect as follows:

Each panel is powered by a separate but identical shielded power cable
from the control panel power supply. This shielded cable provides EMI
shielding for the control panels.
The panels communicate with the Linux PC via a 50 ohm coaxial cable
Thin-net Ethernet link. Each panel has one coaxial connector on the rear.
BNC T adapters and short 50 ohm coaxial cables are provided to connect
the panels together and to the MR420TR. Place a T adapter on the rear of
each panel. Connect the 2 short 50 ohm coaxial cables between the 3
panels. On one of the end panels, place a 50 Ohm terminator on the open
port of the T adapter. On the other end panel, connect the longer 50 ohm
coaxial cable from the open port of the T adapter to another T adapter.
Place another 50 ohm terminator on the open port of this T adapter.
Connect the T adapter to the coaxial port on the MR420TR. The 50Ω coax
cable must be terminated on both ends by the supplied 50Ω terminators.
Do not sharply bend these cables, or substitute shorter lengths.
Gallery Ethernet Connections
Connect the other 100’ CAT5 cable to port 1 of the 100BaseT switch
provided for the Gallery to Linux PC connection. This switch should be
located at the Linux PC end. The other end of this cable will connect to the
top CAT5 port on the rear of the Gallery PC. Connect another CAT5 cable
from port 2 of the 100BaseT switch to the built in CAT5 network port of
the Linux PC. The lower CAT5 port on the Gallery PC will connect to the
CAT5 port on the rear of the 2K mainframe labeled “Still Store 100 Base
T”. However, this needs to be a crossover cable. daVinci provides 2 short
CAT5 cables and a CROSSOVER adapter to make this connection. If you
have the TLC Assistant workstation option, connect a CAT5 cable from
the Assistant Linux PC CAT5 network port to port 3 of the 100BaseT
switch.
Connect any required digital video inputs and outputs, and connect all
VTRs and Noise Reducers.
Installing the 2K 11

Linux Ethernet dhcpd file

In order for the Linux box to communicate to the panels and the 2K frame,
there is a file that is used, this file is called dhcpd. The file dhcpd.conf is
located in the “/etc/” directory and will typically contain the following
information:

Cintel URSA
This section describes the interface of the 2K to the Cintel Ursa telecine.
See Appendix F for details of cable part numbers and hookup
arrangements.
URSA CONTROL
For URSA installations, the 2K mainframe loads da Vinci developed
software which is specifically designed for use with the URSA. No
telecine modifications are required.
In the case of the non-Metaspeed Ursa, a modification may be necessary
to the 2K cpu board. These must be performed by daVinci personnel.
The URSA is controlled by serial digital links. Two 10-meter, 9-pin
cables and one special cable to handle frame count and pull down pulse
information are supplied to connect the URSA with the 2k mainframe.
VIDEO
The recommended video connection from URSA to the 2K is to use a
parallel to serial converter to drive the 2K serial input. For the URSA
GOLD, this would most likely be the 4:4:4:4 parallel connections with two
parallel to serial converters. This method would allow a serial routing
matrix in the path so that uncorrected URSA signals could easily be sent
elsewhere. An alternative method is the analog outputs could be routed
somewhere then digitized for input to the 2K.

PICTURE AND WAVEFORM MONITORING

Picture and waveform monitoring are covered earlier in this document.
The 2K parade scope output monitors the video output of the 2K.
20 Installing the 2K

Thomson Spirit
SPIRIT CONTROL
For Spirit Datacine installations, the 2K mainframe contains an Ethernet
interface that is specifically designed for use with the Spirit. No Datacine
modifications are required.
The Spirit is controlled by a 10-BaseT Ethernet connection found on the
rear of the 2K mainframe. This usually connects to a small hub located
inside the Spirit. One additional cable (#050500) connects from the da
Vinci mainframe “Telecine Pulses” connector to the Spirit’s External Aux.
connector J30. This supplies the FRI, FRID.
On the Spirit remote control panel, set all the remote interface selections
to Remote 3, to give da Vinci control of the Datacine. Remote control is
selected when the source key is selected.

2K Gallery Installation Notes

Description:
The Gallery PC is part of the daVinci 2K Still Store package. It is a single
rack unit Intel-based PC running Windows 2000 Professional. It runs a
custom daVinci-written application called daVinci Still Store. This
application stores full resolution and thumbnail resolution images captured
from the Legalizer board in the 2K mainframe. The application can then
send the full resolution images back to the 2K frame Legalizer board for
display on the internal mix/wipe frame store, allowing a stored image to
be compared with a live image being fed into the 2K frame. The
application also sends the thumbnail images over Ethernet to the Linux PC
computer for display on the NUI VSR Filmstrip and VSR Browser
widgets
Installation:
You need to determine where the Gallery PC will be mounted. It has a
standard PC mouse and keyboard connected to it, and these need to be
accessible at least part time to do system configuration and
maintenance/updates. The PC needs a standard VGA display device
connected for setup as well. We do not provide a display for the PC.
During initial installation, you will definitely need a display hooked up to
make sure it is connected and working properly.
Most California customers have mounted the Gallery PC in the machine
room, near the 2K frame, but it may be better installed in the colorist suite,
especially if the colorist wants to access the daVinci Still Store program
controls and display. There doesn’t seem to be any agreement yet as to
whether the colorist will really need or want to have this ability. Once the
Installing the 2K 21

Gallery PC is set up and working, it does not need to be accessed for the
Still Store functionality at the NUI end to work. It will auto-boot and run
the daVinci Still Store program at power up without any user intervention.
Aside from the keyboard, mouse, and display connections there are two
Cat5 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports on the Gallery PC. They are on the back
of the PC, one above the other. They are labeled Link1 and Link2. Link1
is on top.
The Link1 (top) Ethernet connector is connected to the Linux PCI
10/100BaseT Ethernet port.
The Link2 (bottom) Ethernet connector is connected to the 2K mainframe
Still Store Ethernet port. The 2K has two Still Store ports. One is a
10BaseT and the other is a 100BaseT port. Currently, the systems are
shipping with the Legalizer board configured for 10BaseT operation with
the rotary switches on that board set to 0, 4. To operate in 100BaseT
mode, set the rotary switches on the Legalizer board to 0, C. It is
recommended that your system is set to 100BaseT operation.
You cannot connect the Gallery PC Ethernet ports to the 2K frame or the
Linux PC using direct straight-through Cat45 cables. You must use either
a crossover cable, or use direct cables with a hub/switch in the middle. We
currently send one long crossover cable, one hub/switch, and two short
direct cables. The current Gallery Hookup drawing (420-04100-A00 on
the Dec 2000 Field Eng CD) shows the hub going in the link to the Linux
PC, and the crossover cable going to the 2K frame. If you are not planning
on connecting the Gallery to a house network then the hub is not required
and two crossover cables can be used instead.
IP Address configuration:
The Linux PC has installed a main PCI Ethernet adaptor (eth0) and a
secondary PCI Ethernet adaptor (eth1) IP address set to the 192 prefix.
The 192 prefix is used on the primary Linux PC eth0 and eth1 Ethernet
link to the 2K mainframe.
Linux PC Settings:
On the Linux PC, you can go to System, Network Configuration, enter
password if prompted (daVinci) and highlight the eth1 interface. Click on
edit, and check the address is 192.9.0.220. Then in a shell, cd to the /etc
directory, and edit the hosts file (must be su to do this). In the hosts file
there are two entries: pcstill and tlc. Check IP address for pcstill, it should
be 192.168.10.2 and check the IP address for tlc, it should be
192.168.10.50. Now click on eth0 and click edit and check the address is
192.168.10.1.
You can also click on the Hosts Tab in the Network Configuration
Window to see all the IP addresses that are set up.
22 Installing the 2K

Gallery PC Settings:
Assuming the Gallery PC is up and running, the daVinci Still Store
application should also be running. Click on the Tools menu, and go to
Options. Click on the Environment tab. Check the PC-O2 address is
192.168.10.2. Check the O2 PC address is 192.168.10.1. Exit the daVinci
Still Store application. This can be done by clicking the File menu, and
then Exit. (Note: Before the Linux platform existed, we used the SGI O2
platform, the Gallery Software makes reference to this, it is important to
understand that it’s the addresses that are of importance because the
Gallery software still references the O2 and the name of this value may
NOT change).
Click on the Start icon, then Settings then Network and Dial Up
Connections. Double click the Gallery-O2 icon, and click Properties.
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. Check that the
IP address is 192.168.10.2. Exit the Network setup area.
Launch the daVinci Still Store application. It’s under Start – Programs –
daVinci Still Store – daVinci Still Store.
If the NUI application is running and you log in as a user, the Linux status
at the bottom of the daVinci Still Store app screen on the Gallery should
say CONNECTED. If it says DISCONNECTED, something is not right
with either the IP address settings, or the physical Ethernet connections
between the Linux PC and the Gallery PC.
This gets all the basic interconnections up and running. If you press
GRAB STILL on the NUI keyboard panel, you should see the image
appear on the Gallery daVinci Still Store app screen.
There is now further setup required at the Linux PC NUI end to assign the
Gallery Still Store device as the device you desire to use for stills.
Linux PC NUI setup:
Go into the Site Admin menu, and select 2K Port Config. On any one
available port A through O, enable a DDR. It does not matter which port
as long as it is not being used by another device. Close the Port Config
window then again under the Site Admin menu select Reference Store
Setup. It may already be properly setup. You should see a device called
Ref Store and the model should be DV Still Store. If that is not there, then
use the ADD button to add it in the Device area. The default amount of
frames for this will be 20000. This number has no affect on the operation
of the Gallery so there is no need to try and change it. You DO NOT need
to add specific users for the Ref Store. Click on the Save Devices button
then exit the Reference Store Setup window and login as a user.
Under the VSR/Still Manager menu, select Setup Reference Store. If
you’ve done everything else correctly, you should see that the device =
Ref Store - DV Still Store, and it should be selected and active. Then
Installing the 2K 23

under the Grab/Delete tab, you can select the AutoGrab functions you
desire.

Installing Gallery Software:

If you have changed the Gallery IP address to match a house network,
copy the dss.ini file found in the \Program Files\daVinci Still Store
directory to a different name. This file will be overwritten when the new
software is installed. When the Gallery software installation is complete,
copy your original .ini file back to dss.ini.
1) Close the DSS program.
2) Select Start – Settings – Control Panel
3) Select the Add/Remove Programs icon.
4) Select the daVinci Still Store program and click on
Change/Remove – Confirm yes to remove.
5) Close the Add/Remove Programs window and the Control panel
window.
6) Insert the CD into the Gallery CD player.
7) Select the My Computer icon then select Compact Disk.
8) Click on Gallery – Build 3.4.4 – DSS Store – Package
9) Click on setup.exe
10) Follow the setup instructions and allow the daVinci Still Store
program to install in the default directory.
11) If any files are reported as older, answer yes to keep the newest
files.
12) If any “File in use” or error messages pop up, click on ignore until
setup has completed. More than one of these messages may appear
during installation.
13) Restart the Gallery.

HSDL (High Speed Data Link)

One of the biggest problems in making film post production cost effective
in video facilities has been the ability to move and process film resolution
images at relatively fast speeds. The requirement is for 4 x 3 images to be
scanned at a resolution of 2048 pixels by 1556 lines RGB with 10-bit log
pixel depth at 24fps. This has become an accepted resolution for post
production of motion pictures and special effects shots. However, these
images represent a huge data requirement with large bandwidths, requiring
a suitably high data rate pipe.
Because the required image size does not conform to any of the current
television resolutions, the industry initially settled on the HiPPI (High
Performance Parallel Interface) layer as the data infrastructure. HiPPI,
with its limited bandwidth and the data and file handshaking requirements,
has limited practical speeds of around 4fps. HiPPI requires both the
scanner and a high-end workstation to be available for management,
making it expensive. Because it uses generic data disks or the storage of a
workstation application, it creates a whole layer of expensive
infrastructure most facilities would not normally need. Therefore, HiPPI
is non-real-time, workstation-based, and is slow and expensive. It requires
an infrastructure that is difficult to install, maintain and use in real-world
applications.
The new High Speed Data Link (HSDL) addresses these problems by
providing an efficient transport mechanism for moving data from point to
point, processing it, and sharing it between applications.
HSDL supports 2048 x 1556 RGB 10-bit log images at close to real-time
by utilizing the SMPTE 292 1.485 Gbit structure based on co-axial cables
and BNC plugs—common facility hardware. Using these connections in
dual link mode results in an effective data transfer rate of close to 3 Gbits
on two co-axial BNC connections. This is not video or HDTV but 2048 x
1556, 4 x 3 uncompressed images transferring at 15 - 20 frames per
second. HSDL represents a 5-fold increase in transfer speed. Because the
serial links are used, HSDL images can pass through SMPTE292 routers,
patch panels and the rest of the facility’s infrastructure already in place for
HD video. HSDL utilizes a real-time interface with television timing such
as vertical and horizontal syncs, and blanking data so data color timing
sessions can be performed at near real-time running speeds.
HSDL images can be imported as data into a workstation fitted out with
dual HD I/O making them available for film restoration, compositing,
editing, and film recorders. Archiving and transporting HSDL material
can be done with data transports such as DTF2 or D6.
The following drawing depicts the general system configuration when
doing a transfer from a telecine to a recording device using HSDL. This
allows a user to scan film at 2048x1556 resolution and store the images at
the chosen HSDL frame rate.

Evertz Sync Generator (7750SRG)

Evertz added support for HSDL-15fps to their sync generator to generate the sync pulses
that are needed for HSDL synchronization/editing. The 7750SRG-HD also supports the
19.15 fps HSDL standard that was implemented by the Sierra HD2A but which the 2K
cannot support and is therefore useless.

Snell & Wilcox

Snell & Wilcox is supposedly in the process of designing and building an HSDL I/O
card. Which products this card would ultimately be applicable to is unknown (switchers,
format converters, disk systems, etc.), but it is initially targeted for the Picasso system. It
is unknown which HSDL video standard(s) this card will be capable of supporting. It is
also unknown what the estimated delivery date of this card is.

Video Switchers and Routers

HSDL is a modification of the 1920x1080 HD video standard. Switchers and routers that
accommodate that video standard should also pass HSDL, but it is not guaranteed.

UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS) SYSTEMS

The function of the UPS is to filter and provide temporary AC power for
some components of the 2K color correction system. The following list of
equipment is suitable for this purpose. Equipment for 110 V AC main
power is considered in this discussion. UPS equipment for 220 V AC
installations is also available.
It may not be necessary to back-up all editing equipment. A UPS can be
used to back-up the essential equipment. The UPS model types listed here
provides the power requirements for the Linux PC Workstation and
monitor. Larger UPS systems will simply extend the run time following
power loss. It may not be practical to provide UPS for all 2K system
components like the mainframe. Since the mainframe does not store video
there is no information to protect. All equipment not protected by UPS
systems should have power surge protection. Auxiliary power for the
Linux PC Workstation is essential to preserve the user video edit list and
configuration. All other equipment can be reinitialized and restarted
following a power related event.
The Linux PC Workstation and 17” display monitor have a nominal
combined load of 320 watts. Two good minimum choices for the Linux
PC Workstation and monitor are:
• Trip Lite BC Pro 1050 provides 1050 VA, 750 watts output.
• APC (American Power Conversion) Smart - UPS SU1000 delivering
1000 VA, 670 watts output.
Each of these units will deliver 6 to 12 minutes of emergency power
depending on the equipment options selected. Larger UPS ratings give
longer battery life or more run time to respond to the power loss.
A Trip Lite TL129-ND provides 1400 VA, 940 watts. Additional run time
is available from Trip Lite Unison series MPS2000 or APC Smart-UPS
SU1400 delivering 1400 VA, 950 watts.
There are many UPS options available to monitor, alarm and report
various power conditions. Contact your UPS vendor for additional
information.
