Organizational Culture: represents the shared beliefs, values and assumptions that exist
in an Organization and underpin the care delivery system and effect the practice
environment as well as the healing environment. It is important that you understand the
organizational structure and culture in which you work and how it impact practice.

Answer the following. Answers must reference the organization where you are completing your
preceptorship. You may work with others from the same facility in the groups posted on Web CT –
Healthcare Organization link. . Information specific to your unit should be posted as noted as such.
Complete by 4/1/11 – as a group specific to each of the organizations where students are assigned to

What is the best feature about this health care organization?

1. How is the Health Service Agency/Facility organized – What Organizational Structure is


evident? Briefly describe the organizational structure /chart?

2. How are nursing services organized in this health care system –Describe where in
the organizational chart is either the VP of Nursing,/CNO and to whom does he/she
report?

3. Is there a shared governance program in place? How is it implemented? – How are


staff nurses involved?

4. Who is the manager of your unit and to whom do they report? (Formal Leader)

5. Who is the person that knows the most about your unit and how did they acquire their
knowledge. (Informal Leader)

6. Describe the visual impact of the facility and unit (Environment)

7. Look for the Mission/ Slogan statement of the organization and record. What does this say
about the organization?

8. Where is the policy & procedure manual kept? How were they included in your orientation?
Look at the topics included in the manuals.

9. Look up the job description of the staff nurse and any assistive personnel/tech . What are
the key responsibilities of each?

10. Tell us about how evidenced based practice incorporated at your facility?

11. How are staffing levels determined? What is the nurse to patient ratio?

What are the biggest organizational challenges faced by this health care organization and how are
they handling it?
