Founded on 26 March, 1988 and operating under Law on Credit Institutions, to date, Vietnam Bank for
Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) is the leading commercial bank in Vietnam, holding an
important role in the economic development of Vietnam, particularly in the investment for agriculture,
farmers, and rural areas.
Agribank is the biggest bank in Vietnam in terms of assets, number of staff, branch network, and
customer base. As of December 2009, Agribank’s leading position has been confirmed in many
aspects.
According to 2009 annual report, Agribank’s outstanding loans to agriculture and rural areas
accounted for 68.3% of total, particularly, lending to farm households accounted for 51%. It is
important to note that more than 80% of the rural households nationwide have gained access to
finance and services provided by Agribank.
Due to its specialization and its size the bank has achieved a dominant role in the national economic
development. The main products and services of the bank are:
For the coming years, Agribank wants to promote the role of leading bank and to help to the national
economic development by helping the agricultural sector. For that the bank will give priority to farmers
and rural areas especially to farm households with agricultural, forestry, fishery, and salt production
and to SMEs which has met the demand for transition to agricultural and rural production.
It is important to note that Agribank is a leading bank in Viet Nam in terms of receipt and
implementation of foreign projects, especially from the World Bank (WB), Asia Development Bank
(ADB), French Development Agency (AFD), and European Investment Bank (EIB). These
organizations have selected Agribank to implement 136 projects with total capital funding of more than
USD 4.2 billion, of which the disbursed amount was of over USD 2.3 billion. Additionally, Agribank is
currently taking the chairmanship of Asia Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA).
Recently, Agribank has been known as a leading bank which provides modern services.
Agribank constantly approached and attracted new projects: the second phase of a co-finance
contract with the European Investment Bank (EIB); the third phase of Rural Finance Project funded by
the World Bank; Biogas project funded by the ADB; a JIBIC project with Japan; and project for small
rubber holdings development funded by the AFD.
