DEFN & PURPOSE


component of building which is placed over the opening to prevent adverse effect of weather on a room The purpose of chajja or sun shade is to prevent direct entry of sun light into the room to a certain extent Also, it acts as a barrier to direct entry of rain water into the room through the opening It also adds on to the aesthetic appeal of a building

Usually it is provided at a height of around 7 ft from floor level

If its made of concrete, it is casted along with lintel monolithically


An equal bearing of 9 inch-1ft has to be provided on both the sides of opening It can be either cast-in-situ or precast

Wooden chajja( not so popular these days)

FRP chajja & ferrocement chajja

R C C CHAJJA
Reinforcement is provided in both directions This is casted along with lintel monolithically Thickness of min 50mm is a must Length of r c chajja will be equal to length of lintel Top surface of chajja shall be compulsorily water proofed At the junction of wall & chajja, a curved shaped slope shall be provided Most popular type practiced in construction

Stone chajja
20 mm thick stone slabs( granite) can be used Stone slab > 20mm thick used for chajja shall be plastered on both face Can be incorporated into wall during construction as well after construction also( by making an opening into the wall) These chajja are usually above the lintel

Tile chajja
Consists of metal frame & tiles

Initially, L shaped frame(primary members) is fixed to the wall, these are connected in between by secondary members
Space in between the secondary members are covered with tiles Aesthetically these are better
