Ayurveda has been in use since our Vedic period. The name Ayurveda was evolved from one the Veda called Adarvavedham. The term Ayur means duration of span of life. Veda means unimpeachable knowledge. The common translation of ayurveda is science of life. The earliest recorded knowledge about ayurveda is founded in Rig-Veda and the Adharva Veda, both a second millennium BC. The Adharva Veda lists eight divisions of ayurveda: internel medicine, surgery of head and neck, ophthalmology, surgery, toxicology, psychiatry, gerontology or science of recognition and the science of fertility.

Chart No: 4 Administrative department is considered to be the brain of every concern. It sets the goals and objectives to be accomplished and formulate plans and decisions. The Administrative Officer heads this department in PKHIL and is supported by assistant administrative officer. There are other two office assistants working as subordinates under assistant administrative officer. At PKHIL, the administrative department looks after the personal management functions also. Around 200 workers are employed in the organization including 150 workers and 50 office staff. The office hours in the starts at 10 am and finishes at 5.30 pm. While factory hours are from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. It is obvious that there exist stronger industrial relations within the organization. The general meeting is conducted weekly. The workers also have adequate participation in the decision making process. So they are more loyal to the company and no trade unions are allowed to grow within the concern.

The R & D department is well equipped to carry out any type of research in the field of ayurveda. Research department is the core area of PKHIL as all products are developed there under keen supervision of Dr.Hareendran. The Managing Director of Dr. Hareendran Nair is the chief of R & D department. Under R & D department, here are five departments-Dept of Pharmacology, Dept of Botany, Dept. of Chemistry, Dept. of Quality and control, Dept. of Pharmaceutics. Dept. of Pharmacology and Dept. of Botany has two immediate research assistants following by

attendors. Dept. of Chemistry has two divisions-Dept. of Biochemistry & Dept. of Analytical Chemistry. Each these sub departments has two research assistants. Then Dept. of Quality control and Dept. of Pharmaceutics, each followed by two lab assistants. All products of PKHIL are the output of this department. Some of these products are Pankajakasturi Granules, Peekay Tablets, Soma Tone Tablets, Herbal Soap, Kasturi cough Mix, Ilogen Tablets , Urotone capsules, etc. R & D department developed some medicine for diseases like breathing disorder (Asthma),diabetes mellitus, blood pressure, arthritis, skin diseases, cough, urinary disorder, liver disorder, fissured feet, fungal infection ,dandruff, hair falling ,premature graying, etc. Pankajakasturi Decard is said to an exact solution for the symptoms exhibited by SARS. All medicines so far developed by the Dept. have undergone rigorous tests. Toxicological and clinical trial on par with symptoms adopted by modern medicine. Chart No: 6 All the purchase for the company is made by the purchase department. The purchasing function has emerged as a specialized organizational activity. The success of purchasing department depends upon the quality of the inputs and also upon the ability of the purchasing department personnel to analyze the inputs to the fullest extent. The company makes all purchase only after obtaining purchase requisition from the stores department. Purchase department has appropriate store code for all its raw materials and for packing materials like pet jar bottles, aluminium foils, empty capsules, duplex boards,

etc. cartons and wrappers are purchased on job order basis. Most of the raw materials are purchased from outside Kerala, especially from the northern parts of India. Some are cultivated in the companys own 13 acre herbal garden. Purchases are made both on cash and credit from external sources. For every credit purchase, the suppliers usually give thirty or more days to make the payment.

The store department generate purchase indent when the stock level maintained at the store reaches the re-order level. The purchase indent is handed over to the purchase department, which in turn generates purchase order; with this purchase order materials are ordered, Goods inward note is conducted in the incoming material. Quality check is conducted in the incoming material to check whether the material stand up to the standard stipulated under the acceptable norms. Then they will prepare store inward note. Chart No: 9 This department is headed by the production manager Mr. Gopakumar and immediately followed by the assistant manager. The production supervisor and packing manager is subordinate to the assistant manager and they are assisted by production assistant respectively. There are separate workers for both production and packing. The various products manufactured are subject to inspection by the quality inspector to ensure that they are up to stand. There are nearly 50 workers, both male and female, working under the production and packing section respectively. These workers are paid on monthly basis. For any overtime works, extra charges are paid and transport facilities are also provided. Other facilities such as canteen and crche are also to the workers.

MAINTENANCE WING
Maintenance is very important to extend the useful life of an asset. Maintenance has not only to reduce scheduled stoppages and breakdowns by frequent performance checking, testing and providing inspections and skillful repair when required to ensure better service, availability and reliability. The effectiveness of production is highly dependent on the quality of maintenance service quality. For the proper maintenance and repair of plant and machinery, a separate wing functions under the control of General Manager. The principal objectives of the wing are: 1. To maximize the availability and reliability of assets. 2. To extend the useful life of assets by minimizing wear and tear and deterioration. 3. To ensure operational readiness of all equipment for emergency use at all times. 4. To ensure safety of personnel using facilities. This wing includes fitter, electrician and plumber. This wing carries out both preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance. Preventive maintenance is done weekly, monthly as well as half yearly and breakdown maintenance is done when required. With the permission of General Manager, outside agencies are considered for special cases and they are paid separately.

PACKING SECTION
Packing is defined as the general group of activities in product planning, which involve designing and producing the containers or wrappers for product. There is a separate section for the packing of the products. Certain products such as cosmetics and soaps are packed in attractive wrappers in order to draw the attention of the consumers. Manufacturing date, Expiry date, etc is printed on the wrappers. In India, Pankajakasturi uses tables of different stages. Important decisions regarding packing and labeling is taken by top management. The ultimately resulted in cost reduction.

The sales officer follows the area sales manager and assistant marketing manager and sales representative is the immediate subordinate of sales officer. The main function of this department is to ensure uninterrupted distribution of products to customers. It makes a market study with the help of outside agencies to know the demand for their respective products and supply is made accordingly.
