LEMAG PREMET C
Thank you for buying the LEMAG PREMET C electronic indicator. The technology and handling of the LEMAG PREMET C Indicator has been developed and designed for the future. It is easy to operate, record, store and analyse all measurement data on the units colour display for quick results, high accuracy and repeatability. The LEMAG PREMET C can measure up to 30 peak pressures for 1-20 cylinders and calculate the statistical data. It also compensates for temperature changes prior to every measurement. The LEMAG PREMET C will provide you with essential data about your engines. Different versions of the electronic indicator are available and additional features can be upgraded at a later stage if required. Depending on your version, the LEMAG PREMET C can e.g. measure and calculate the mean indicated pressure, indicated power and combustion pressure in relation to the crank angle by using a TDC Sensor, inductive or optional laser type. Analysis software is also integrated into the LEMAG PREMET C to enable more detailed analyses on any compatible PC. To ease this operation the unit acts like an external mass storage device (USB stick). There is no need for installing a device driver for the PREMET C on computers with Windows XP or VISTA. Reading the operating instructions will help you benefit from all the instruments functions. Our high quality LEMAG PREMET C indicators can increase efficiency and we are certain that it will become a vital tool on board. Safety Instructions Please note that compressed exhaust gases are extremely dangerous due to their high temperatures and pressures. The connection between the indicator cock and indicator must be absolutely gas tight. Please ensure that the connection nut on the indicator cock is securely fitted before opening. The indicator valve must be completely closed before dismounting the LEMAG PREMET C. Temperature Range This instruments temperature range for storage is -20 C to +70 C. The temperature range for measuring is an environmental temperature of 0 C to 50 C.

1. Start screen
After power on the electronic indicator PREMET C will show the following start screen: LEHMANN & MICHELS GmbH PREMET C SN: 34567 Version: 1.11 2009-05-22 LS XL MS FUEL ACL - Serial number of the instrument - Firmware version - Date of firmware version - green: installed options
Pressing any key will leave the start screen for the MAIN MENU.
2. MAIN MENU
From the main menu the user selects the different functions of the device. By using the keys UP and DOWN the user can pre select a function. The pre selected function is highlighted by a white background colour. 3. Menu point MANUAL SETUP

The menu point MANUAL SETUP is intended to allow the user to setup the instrument for usage. The MANUAL SETUP will show the following sub menu: MANUAL SETUP SETUP SHIPS SETUP ENGINES SETUP CLOCK - setup functions for different ships - setup functions for different engines - setup functions for internal clock
By using the keys UP and DOWN the user can pre select a function. The pre selected function is highlighted by a white background colour. By pressing the ENTER key the user starts the selected function. By pressing the ESC key the user returns to the main menu. 3.1 Menu point SETUP SHIPS The PREMET C can measure and store measurements for 5 ships with 6 engines for each ship. In menu point SETUP SHIPS the user is able to edit the name of the individual ships SHIP1 SHIP5. By using the keys UP and DOWN the user can change the actual character highlighted by the cursor. Allowed characters are 0..9,A..Z,a..z. The max. length of the shipname is 16 characters. By using the ENTER key the actual character is accepted and the cursor moves to the next character. By using the ESC key the inserted shipname is skipped and the user returns to the main menu. If the last character was accepted with the ENTER key the new shipname is stored in the internal flash ROM of the PREMET C.
3.2 Menu point SETUP ENGINES The PREMET C can measure and store measurements for 5 ships with 6 engines for each ship. In menu point SETUP ENGINES the user is able to edit the name of the individual engine and the engine setup data like number of cylinders,2/4 stroke and others. Select the function SETUP ENGINES from the menu MANUAL SETUP: MANUAL SETUP SETUP SHIPS SETUP ENGINES SETUP CLOCK Acknowledge with ENTER.

By using the keys UP and DOWN the user can change the actual character highlighted by the cursor. Allowed characters are 0..9,A..Z,a..z. The max. length of the shipname is 10 characters. Now the user is able to edit the engine base information: MANUAL SETUP EDIT PARAMETERS ALLOWED: NO ?
At first the instrument asks if the user wants to view the data only (Allowed: NO) or if he wants to edit the data (Allowed: YES). 3.2.1 Setup pressure unit The PREMET C can present pressure readings using one of the following engineering units: Bar, psi, Mpa, kg/cm2. This menu allows selecting the engineering unit: MANUAL SETUP UNIT FOR PRESSURE IS: bar ?

3.2.3 Setup scav air pressure The PREMET C relates all measured pressures to the scavenging air pressure (2-stroke engine) or charging air pressure (4-stroke engine). This pressure has to be given to the instrument prior to the measurement. Because this pressure depends on the actual load during the measurement it should be edited before start of measurement. This menu allows editing the scavenging/charging air pressure: MANUAL SETUP SCAV AIR PRESSURE IS: 1 .00bar ? Adjust before Start measurement Use UP and DOWN keys to change the highlighted position. 3.2.5 Setup bank type line/Vee (only for option XL or MS) The PREMET C needs to know if the engine is of type line or Vee. This information is used for the calculation of the individual cylinder positions with relation to the TDC/MS sensor signal: MANUAL SETUP BANK TYPE IS: In-line ?

3.2.8 Setup limit pmax dev. The PREMET C can calculate the number of work strokes of each cylinder which is in an area around the mean peak pressure of all work strokes of this cylinder. This menu allows editing this limit: MANUAL SETUP LIMIT P MAX DEV. IS: 05.0 bar ?

3.2.11 Setup firingorder (only for option XL or MS) The PREMET C can automatically calculate the TDC position of every cylinder with relation to the TDC/MS sensor signal. For this it needs to know the position of every cylinder in the firing order of the engine: MANUAL SETUP FIRINGORDER Position: 01 Cylinder: 01 ? 3.2.16 Setup TDC correction (only for option XL or MS) For correct calculation of the indicated power the PREMET C needs the correct TDC position of all cylinders. If the TDC/MS sensor is not accurately adjusted it is possible to electronically shift the TDC position of all cylinders with relation to the TDC/MS sensor signal: MANUAL SETUP TDC CORRECTION IS: +000.0 deg CA

Over longer time periods the internal clock may differ from other clocks and may need to be corrected. Menu point SCAN ENGINE

This menu point is used to start the measurement. Before starting the measurement the user has to select the ship (1...5) : SCAN ENGINE SHIP1 SHIP2 SHIP3 SHIP4 SHIP5 - select SHIP1 - select SHIP2 - select SHIP3 - select SHIP4 - select SHIP5
Now choose the engine of the ship which should be measured: SCAN ENGINE MAINENG 1 MAINENG2 AUXENG1 AUXENG2 AUXENG3 AUXENG4 - select engine 1 - select engine 2 - select engine 3 - select engine 4 - select engine 5 - select engine 6
Finally the user has to select if all cylinders should be measured in a sequence (ALL CYLINDERS) or if single cylinders should be measured (SINGLE CYLINDER):

Now the first cylinder can be prepared. Open the valve for a short time to clean the indicator channel. After closing the indicator cock, mount the PREMET on the indicator cock and open the valve. After pressing the ACK button the measuring will start and the instrument will show
If the indicator cock is not open you will receive the following information:

If the measurement was successful the PREMET will display:
Close the indicator valve and remove the PREMET. Press ENTER to change to the next cylinder. Carry out the measurement as before with cylinder 1. Measure cylinders in the order 1, 2, 3 etc, not the firing order!

Menu point ANALYSE DATA

Menu point DELETE DATA
This menu point is used to delete stored measurements. You have to do it in the same way you select measurements for analysing. Select the Ship, Engine or Measurement which you want to delete in the same way you did for ANALYSING DATA and press ENTER.

Menu point CHECK TDC SENSOR

(only for option XL or MS)
This menu point is used to check the functioning of the crank angle sensors TDC/MS. CHECK TDC SENSOR statically dynamically Count INC pulses The sub menu statically is intended to allow a check of the wiring of the TDC/MS sensor while slow turning the engine. The submenu dynamically is intended to check the TDC/MS sensor on a running engine. The submenu count INC pulses is intended to check the number of INC pulses of the MS sensor while slow turning of the engine. 7.1 Menu point CHECK TDC SENSOR, statically (only for option XL or MS) The sub menu statically is intended to allow a check of the wiring of the TDC/MS sensor while slow turning the engine: CHECK TDC SENSOR Status of inputs: TDC: OFF INC: OFF Input TDC: OFF -> no target in front of TDC sensor, LED on TDC sensor is OFF Or no slot in front of MS sensor, TDC LED on MS sensor is OFF Input TDC: ON Input INC: OFF Input INC: ON -> target in front of TDC sensor, LED on TDC sensor is ON Or slot in front of MS sensor, TDC LED on MS sensor is ON -> no slot in front of MS sensor, INC LED on MS sensor is OFF -> slot in front of MS sensor, INC LED on MS sensor is ON
This function runs until the user presses the ESC key.

7.2 Menu point CHECK TDC SENSOR, dynamically (only for option XL or MS) The submenu dynamically is intended to check the TDC/MS sensor on a running engine: CHECK TDC SENSOR Measure RPM Status: wait RPM: 0000.0 This function automatically scans the TDC sensor input. If there is no signal for 3 seconds the status shows: no signal and the rpm is set to 0000.0 rev/min. If there is a speed signal the RPM is set to the actual engine speed. If the PREMET has the option MS and a MS sensor is connected the status shows the number of INC pulses / revolution. If the number of INC pulses / revolution differs from 360 pulses the MS sensor should be checked. This function runs until the user presses the ESC key. 7.3 Menu point CHECK TDC SENSOR, count INC pulses (only for option MS) The submenu count INC pulses is intended to check the number of INC pulses of the MS sensor while slow turning of the engine: CHECK TDC SENSOR Count INC pulses Status: wait TDC INC: 000 This function waits for the first occurrence of the TDC signal (status: wait TDC). If the TDC signal occurred the status changes to status: measuring and the number of INC pulses are updated. If the next TDC pulse appears the measurement is stopped (status: finished). The number of INC pulses should be 360. Otherwise the MS sensor should be checked. This function runs until the user presses ESC.

8. Menu point CALIBRATE

This menu is intended to let the user to statically check the calibration of the cylinder pressure sensor. Also service functions with relation to instrument calibration are located here. These functions are only accessible for LEHMANN & MICHELS: CALIBRATE Check calibration New calibration Temp calibration Volt calibration Fuel calibration Set serialnumber
8.1 Menu point CALIBRATE, check calibration This menu is intended to allow the user to statically check the calibration of the cylinder pressure sensor: CHECK CALIBRATION Apply test pressure Then press ENTER Apply a known test pressure, for example 100 bar. Then press the ENTER key if the test pressure is stable. CHECK CALIBRATION Ubat = 7,75 Volt Temp= 20 degC Apply 0 bar Then press ENTER The instrument shows the battery voltage and the internal temperature. Now release the pressure as soon as possible and press the ENTER key as soon as possible: CHECK CALIBRATION Pressure = 100.5 bar Press any key The shown pressure should not deviate more than 1.6 % from the known test pressure. Otherwise the instrument should be returned to LEHMANN & MICHELS for recalibration.

9. Menu point CONNECT TO USB-PC

The setup information for ships and engines as well as all measurements are stored in the PREMET C. The data will not be not lost if the PREMET C battery is empty or if it is removed. For more in depth analysis the measurements can be transmitted to a PC connected via USB 2.0. To ease this operation the PREMET C acts like an external mass storage device (USB stick). There is no need to install a device driver for the PREMET C if using it with Windows XP,VISTA and later editions. Carry out the following steps to access to the PREMET C measurements: 1. Connect the PREMET C via USB to a PC or Laptop. 2. Select CONNECT TO USB-PC from the main menu:
- return to MAIN MENU - connect the device to USB

If the PREMET C is connected to the PC an additional drive will be shown:
This drive ( PREMET_C G: ) can be used to get access to the measurements of the PREMET C. Attention! The drive (here G:) is assigned by Windows and can be different on your computer. To disconnect the PREMET C from your computer, either use the Windows function for disconnecting external USB devices or press a key on the PREMET C. Attention! Do not disconnect or press any key on the PREMET C during Read or Write operations. Attention! No directories on the PREMET C should be deleted using the PC. Measurements deleted on the PREMET C cannot be recovered.

Select the correct ship and then the engine:

The file will open and can be analysed. The data file can be copied or moved from the PREMET C to the PC using the Windows Explorer.

If the measurement was successful the PREMET will display:

Menu point ANALYSE DATA

ANALYSE DATA ALL CYLINDERS SINGLE CYLINDER

Now the measured cylinder will be shown.

Menu point DELETE DATA

Menu point CHECK TDC SENSOR

Then select the month to show the measurements.

Select the correct ship and then the engine:

Select the year and month of the measurement:
