n July of 1954, a conference was convened
in Geneva in an attempt to resolve the
problems in ndochina. Although an
agreement was reached, its provisions
were quickly violated and the plan never
came to fruition. The agreement reached
on the 20th and 21st of July included:
* Vietnam is partitioned at the 17
th
parallel-A
temporary, not political, divide
* Elections to be held in 1965, and are to be
monitored by a commission made of Canada,
Poland, and India
* Troops to be removed within a certain time

In 1954, MSTS evacuated Vietnamese refugees from North to South Vietnam.
USNS Howze was one of many MSTS ships involved in Passage to Freedom'
bringing 300,000 refugees and 200,000 tons of Cargo from North Vietnam.
