ABOuT ThE TrAINEr

Prior to joining Mobius Institute, Bill Kilbey was the Manager of Worldwide Training for Emerson Process Management, CSI. Bill was responsible for the development and delivery of all CSI Training activities and personnel. He has been in this role since 1997. Bill received his initial vibration and reliability training while serving as a sound and vibration analyst in the submarine force for the United States Navy. After completion of his military service, he was a machinery reliability consultant with a large rotating machinery repair organization. Bill brings with him a wealth of troubleshooting experience in many industries including petrochemical, pharmaceutical, wood/paper products, mining, automotive, food processing and general manufacturing. He has over 10 years experience in teaching a variety of reliability related courses including balancing, alignment, basic and advanced vibration analysis, CBM software, Root Cause Failure Analysis and management focused courses.

ABOuT ThE ISO VIBrATION ANAlYST CErTIFICATION ExAM

Please note that you are certified by Mobius Institute (not by the International Standards Organization). As of the beginning of 2007 Mobius had customers in over 80 countries. Mobius has received National export award in 2003 and 2006, plus Plant Engineering product of the year awards for iLearnVibration, iLearnInterpreter, and most recently, iLearnAlignment. Mobius Institute is the acclaimed training and certification arm. 1. 2. 3. 4. All of the questions are multiple choice (choose from 4 options). You are required to perform some calculations, so you must bring a calculator. The exam is closed book, however you are provided with a booklet of standard tables, charts, formulae and basic reference material. To quote from the standard: Questions shall be of a practical nature, yet test the candidate on concepts and principles required to conduct machinery condition evaluations. The questions may involve the interpretation of charts and plots. Simple mathematical calculations may be required.

rE-ExAMINATION To quote the standard: A candidate who fails to obtain the pass grade required for certification may be re-examined any number of times, provided that the re-examinations take place not sooner than 30 days after a previous examination. A certification body may use its discretion in allowing an earlier re-examination in the event that further training acceptable to the certification body concerned is undertaken. Candidates excluded for reasons of unethical behavior shall wait at least 12 months before reapplying. rECOMMENdEd guIdElINES These are the recommended years of experience guidelines for each certification level. It is undesirable for people without practical experience to hold Category II or higher certification levels. level Category I Category II Category III Category IV PErIOd OF VAlIdITY & ANNuAl FEES As per the standard, certification remains valid for five (5) years. You may retake the exam at any time within this period to extend the period of valid certification for an additional five (5) years. As per the standard, there is no annual fee to maintain the validity of your certification. To quote the standard: Designation of a person as Category I is not a prerequisite for certification as Category II. However, certification of a person as Category III and Category IV requires previous certification at the lower category. At each higher classification category, the breadth and depth of experience is expected to be greater than at the previous lower category.

When questions arise you can turn to iLearnVibration. This award winning, interactive training CD includes the lessons that you took on the course. The lessons are fully narrated, and include quizzes. You can re-take a lesson at any time, or simply type-in a question and jump to the appropriate topic within the course. BOdY OF KNOWlEdgE
The Mobius Intermediate Vibration Training is structured according to the requirements for ISO 18436.2:2002 Category II. This course is a prerequisite for ISO 18436.2:2002 Category III and ASNT SNT-TC-1A:2001 Level II. Individuals certified as Vibration Analyst Category II are fully qualified personnel who may be authorized by their employers to perform and/or direct industrial machinery vibration measurements and vibration analysis for single-channel measurements, with or without phase trigger signals, according to established and recognized procedures. Personnel classified as Vibration Analyst Category II require all the knowledge and skills expected of Vibration Technician Category I and shall also be qualified to: i) Select the appropriate machinery vibration measurement technique. ii) Setup instruments for basic resolution of amplitude, frequency and time. iii) Perform basic vibration analysis of machinery and components such as shafts, bearings, gears, fans, pumps, and motors using spectrum analysis. iv) Maintain a database of results and trends. v) Perform basic (single-channel) impact tests to determine natural frequencies. vi) Classify, interpret and evaluate the test results (including acceptance tests) in accordance with applicable specifications and standards. vii) Recommend minor corrective actions. viii) Understand basic single-plane field balancing concepts, and ix) Be aware of some of the causes and effects of bad measurement data. There are no special requirements in order to be eligible for this course, although the student should have some prior experience with vibration data collection and analysis. As this course is a prerequisite for the Mobius Institute Vibration Analyst Category III course, the course content is in accordance with American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Recommended Training for Level II Vibration Analysis per ASNT SNT-TC-1A recommended practice and the applicable Mobius Institute written practice.
