In its original form, the recovery heart rate is used when estimating
aerobic power. In this version the test makes use of the Astrand-
Ryhming Nomogram. It is a simple 6 minute step test that uses a
step bench that is 40cm high for males and 33cm high for
females. Subjects exercise with a step frequency of 22.5 steps per
minute (90 bpm). It can be used for both men and women of various
ages and relies on the linear relationship between heart rate and VO2
to predict maxVO2. The test has been used as part of exercise testing
for more than 50 years.
