LOAD TEST ON D.C COMPOUND GENERATOR

AIM:- To conduct load test on a D.C Compound Generator and to draw its internal and external characteristics. THEORY: D.C compound generator consists of both series and shunt field windings. In a Compound Generator, the shunt field is stronger than the Series field The shunt field excitations are almost constant. The effect of series field is variable, however since its ampere turns depend upto the load current. When the load current is zero, it produces no flux and when the load current is high it creates appreciable flux. The shunt and series field coils should be so connected that they create the flux in the same direction. Under this condition the generator is said to be cumulative compound. If the series winding is so connected with the shunt field winding. The series field flux opposes the shunt field flux, the terminal voltage of the generator falls with the increase in load. This type of connection of the generator is known as differential compound connection fig. (1) & (2) shown both cumulative and differential connections. If the full load voltage is-load voltage, it is referred as flat compound. PROCEDURE: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Make the connections as per the circuit diagram. Give the supply to the motor by closing DPST switch. Start the motor with the help of 3- Point starter. Adjust the speed of the motor to its rated value by varying either field or armature rheostat as per the requirement. 5. Vary the generator field rheostat until the rated voltage is indicated by the voltmeter. 6. Take 4 to 5 readings by closing load switch and applying the load. 7. Remove all loads on generator and stop the motor. 8. Reverse the terminals of either shunt field or series field. 9. Again start the generator and repeat the steps from 1 to 7 10. Find out the armature and series field resistance by conducting drop test. 11. Do the calculations and draw the necessary graph.

PRECAUTIONS: 1. In differential mode change the connections of the either series field or shunt field but not both. 2. Connections should be tight. 3. Reading must be noted without any parallax error. 4. Fuses should be properly rated . 5. The operation of the 3-Point starter. Should be slow and uniform. 6. Armature rheostat should be connected in maximum position initially. 7. Field rheostat should be minimum resistance position. Result: The experiment is done on the given D.C Compound generator and its internal and external characteristics for both cumulative and differential mode are drawn.
