My NSTP Experience

Some of the students embarking NSTP first impression including me sees the NSTP as an extra baggage in our curriculum for which we students is required by law upon the approval of Republic Act 9163, otherwise known as the NSTP Law of 2001. As such, all incoming freshmen are required to take up NSTP as a requirement for graduation in the course that we have enrolled in. Where we are given the option to select one from among the three NSTP components that they feel would help them build their personality and enhance their sense of patriotism as required in the NSTP course. Never had I thought as the course progressing and to my great demise that Im beginning to like and comprehend the importance of the NSTP, fueled by the recent earthquake that took place yesterday a magnitude 8.9 earthquake shook the city of Tokyo, Japan unleashing one of the powerful tsunamis that Ive ever seen my entire life as the result of the quakes aftereffect that was caught by videos and thanks to modern media many people seen it through their television set, that whipped everything in its path cars, houses, buildings and everything you can think of, followed by the rampant fire which broke out throughout the city. Surely many people certainly have died in that disaster but it would have many, many more have died if the people of Japan did not have some kind of any trainings and their most of their skyscrapers are not earthquake proof. Im just very thankful we had that Disaster Risk Reduction & Management training, The uncanny timely of events that unfolds for the next few days since we took that seminar is very timely and appropriate that we know the risk involve and the quick overview on the nature of earthquakes and the safety precaution we can take upon for ourselves and to our community to lessen the danger of the earthquakes aftermath and the accompanying aftereffect of a quake which is the tsunami.

It serve to me as a wakeup call that no matter how insignificant I make look at disasters, I cannot deny the facts that it is there and it strikes at any given time and place and the only best possible way we can do to lessen the destructive power it brings is to prepare.

Im beginning to appreciate NSTP, what may the governments ulterior motives behind it, I come to a realization that Im glad I have the chance that Ive participated in it for it is not a moral issue to address but to be socially responsible to ourselves and to our community as a whole. I believe that the true aim of NSTP for sending Spcians to different areas is to show us that people who are not like me, in terms of the privileges and the quality of education that I receive, are still worthy of the respect and honor given to me by many. By learning how they act, think, and behave, I have come to a realization that the children in our area, however naughty and noisy some kids they are still kids, kids will be kids right? They have shown me how talented they were. Many of these children despite of the financial status that I know they are having. Upon watching them perform and looking at their works, I realized that in some aspects, those kids are actually better than me. They can do some things which I cant do. They excel in some areas where I are not good at. We may be higher than them in terms of education and social status, but they possess some blessings which we do not have.

This is what I learned about the true meaning of human dignity: Dignity is not just about seeing what you have which others dont have, nor seeing what you dont have which other people have. It is recognizing that we, as humans, are all given blessings unique to us. Our strengths can be the weaknesses of others, and our weaknesses their strengths. And that makes us all equal: no one is higher, no one is lower. Dignity is about living our life with thankfulness, and striving to become better so as not to waste the blessings

that we enjoy but are not given to others. It is also about treating other people with respect, knowing that just like you and me, they are born with dignity and are worthy to be honored. Since each of us is a wonderful creation of God, we deserve all the respect and honor. In contrast with what I just said, we should see others as great creations of God, equal to us with nature.
