2.1.2 End Showtime When finished testing, close the link: 1. Select from the module main menu, MODEM CONTROL > END SHOWTIME. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions, and press ENTER. 3. The screen displays CLOSING LINK and COMPLETE when finished. Also note that the top message shows WAITING at the end of the process. 4. When finished, press ESC. Note: It is good practice to manually close the link instead of just unplugging from the signal. When you close the link, the test set sends a Close Command message to the DSLAM. The DSLAM then knows why the signal is lost when the test set is disconnected. 2.1.3 Initiate Handshake The test set automatically initiates handshake with the far end modem upon powering up. However, if the link needs to be reopened, select this item. 1. Select from the module main menu, MODEM CONTROL > INITIATE HANDSHAKE. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions, and press ENTER. 3. The screen displays TRAINING. The top left on-screen message displays WAITING followed by TRAINING. The xTU-C (CO mode) or xTU-R (CPE mode) LED should be blinking red, indicating the test set is trying to connect. 4. If there is a successful connection, the CURRENT STATUS screen is displayed. The top left on-screen message displays SHOWTIME and the xTU-C (CO mode) or xTUR (CPE mode) LED is green. If unsuccessful, TRAINING is displayed and the xTU-C (CO mode) or xTU-R (CPE mode) LED continues blinking red.

Figure 7 Current Status Screens The left CURRENT STATUS screen in Figure 7 reports the following information for both DOWNSTREAM and UPSTREAM: RATE: Current rate reported in kbps or Mbps. MAX: Maximum attainable rate reported in kbps or Mbps. CPTY: Capacity is a percentage ratio of Line Rate/Maximum Rate. A common industry threshold for capacity is a measurement of less than 85% for a stable line. SNRM: Signal-to-Noise Ratio Margin in dB. A common industry threshold is a minimum SNRM of 8.0 dB for a stable line. ATTN: Attenuation in dB. PATH: This shows the latency path; INTL (Interleaved) if the delay is > /= 2ms, or FAST if the delay is between 01ms. Press to view the right CURRENT STATUS screen shown in Figure 7. It reports the following information for both DOWNSTREAM and UPSTREAM (except FAR END VENDOR): DELY: Actual Interleaver Delay reported in ms (millisecond). The delay ranges from 163mS. The interleaver delay is set to meet the network service providers requirements for error burst protection and latency. INP: Actual Impulse Noise Protection is used in conjunction with the interleaver delay setting, INP enables enhanced noise protection and is being used more for IP video applications. DEPH: Actual Interleaving Depth is an indication of how many frames are allocated for interleaving. The interleaver depth is set to meet the network service providers requirements for error burst protection and latency. The range for depth is 14096. PWR: Aggregate transmit Power. FAR END VENDER: Reads the vendor ID code provided from the CO ATU-C, if MODEM MODE is set for CPE, or the code from the CPE ATU-R, if the MODEM MODE is set for CO. CURRENT STATUS F-keys RETRAIN (F3): Restart the link with the far end device. STORE (F4): Save the reported results. See Section 2.6. Interpreting the Results Fixed Rate Circuits Fixed rate circuits specifies an exact data rate for the customer. If testing a Fixed Rate service, look at the following:
12 SSMTT-48 UDSL Module

RATE: Confirm that this value equals the fixed rate set for the circuit, in both the upstream and downstream directions. For example, if the circuit under test is configured for a fixed rate of 22016 kbps downstream/5504 kbps upstream, confirm that this measurement is achieved. SNRM: Confirm that the signal-to-noise margin complies with your companys requirements. A common standard is 8 dB, higher values can provide more room for any introduced noise. Rate Adaptive Circuits Rate adaptive circuits specify minimum and maximum data rates for a circuit, and try to attain the maximum rate set by the DSLAM. If testing a Rate Adaptive service, look at the following: RATE: This value should be between the minimum and maximum thresholds set for the circuit. SNRM: The signal-to-noise margin value also needs to be above the minimum allowable margin. Commonly it is 8 dB, your margin might be higher. Since rate adaptive circuits try to use all the possible bandwidth, the noise margin will typically be very close to 6 dB (or the minimum value). 2.2.2 Error Measurements

2.2.3 Tone Graphic/Table This menu contains: BITS PER TONE SNR PER TONE 2.2.3.1 Bits Per Tone This feature measures the bits per tone distribution used by the modem to transmit at the provisioned rate. It displays the number of bits assigned per tone as a graphic or as a table. During modem initialization, a signal-to-noise measurement for each tone is made. Bit distribution is then optimized to meet the desired bit rate. Each tone can support a theoretical maximum of 15 bits. During operation, the bit distribution may be adjusted to optimize bandwidth. The modem constantly monitors the signal-to-noise ratio for each tone. If a tone degrades in quality, it sends a bit swap command to adjust the amount of bits assigned to that particular tone. These bits may be added to a different tone or taken out completely.

Figure 9 Bits Per Tone Screens In the left screen in Figure 9, the left block of bits represents the upstream signal. The higher frequency group at the right represents the downstream signal. There is a buffer between the upstream and downstream frequencies, which is represented by the gap between the upstream and downstream tones. To learn the exact bit count and frequency of a specific tone, see the line just above the graph. This line provides the bit count for the tone marked by the pointer arrow. In Figure 9, the pointer arrow is at the first downstream tone, thus the line reads tone 65 (280 kHz) with two bits. To move the pointer arrow: Press or to move the pointer arrow one tone at a time. Press << (F1) or >> (F2) to move the pointer arrow to another tick mark shown on the horizontal axis of the graph. The Graphic can display two different scales using ZOOM (F3): The first scale displays all 255 tones in the same screen, as in the left screen in Figure 9. Press ZOOM (F3) to display 0127 tones in one screen, move the pointer past 127 to view tones 128255 in one screen. Press ZOOM (F3) to return to the first view of all 255 tones in the same screen. You can also view a table of the tones by pressing TABLE (more, F4). An example is shown in the right screen in Figure 9. Listed for each tone is the number of bits assigned to it. Press or to scroll through all tones. In either screen, press the STORE F-key to save the results. See Section 2.6 for details. Interpreting the Results The lower frequency tones represent the bandwidth used for the upstream signal. The higher frequency tones at the right show the frequencies used for the downstream signal. The bits should drop to zero after the end of the upstream. This is the buffer between the upstream and downstream signals. The actual size of this buffer varies.
14 SSMTT-48 UDSL Module

If there is a major drop in bits in either the downstream or the upstream section, this may indicate that there is a possible interferer at that frequency. For example, if there is a major drop at 772 kHz, this may represent an interfering T1 signal. 2.2.3.2 SNR Per Tone This feature measures the signal-to-noise ratio for each downstream tone used by the modem to transmit the provisioned rate. It displays the SNR per tone as a graphic or as a table. During modem initialization, a signal-to-noise measurement is made for each tone; bit distribution is then optimized to meet the desired bit rate.

Figure 12 IP Data DSL-ATM Configuration Screens Configure these settings for a DSL-ATM interface: ENCAPSULATION Options: LLC (F1), VC MUX (F2) Choose the encapsulation method for carrying traffic over AAL Type 5 over ATM. LLC: Logical Link Control based on IEEE standard 802.2. LLC encapsulation is used when multiple protocol are encapsulated over a single ATM Virtual Connection. VC MUX: Used when only one protocol is carried over a single ATM Virtual Connection. PAP/CHAP (MODE = PPPoA or PPPoE) Options: PAP (F1), CHAP (F2), AUTO (more, F1), NONE (more, F2) The authentication layer ensures that only a valid device establishes a connection with the network using the entered USER IP and PASSWORD (unless NONE is selected). PAP: Password Authentication Protocol as defined in RFC 1334. PAP is the simplest method for authentication. It involves a two-way handshake where one peer sends a user name and ID to another peer element in the network. The second peer returns an authentication-acknowledge message either accepting or rejecting the user name and password. CHAP: Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol as defined in RFC 1994. It involves a three-way handshake, in which the test set sends a challenge containing its user name. The server responses with a specific identifier expected for this transaction. The test set then accepts or rejects this response, when accepted the test set starts sending data. AUTO: Use this recommended setting to automatically detect the authentication. NONE: USER IP and PASSWORD is not used. VPI Range: 0255 The default is 8, which is a typical Ethernet assignment. Along with VCI, VPI identifies the next destination of a cell as it moves through a series of ATM switches on the way to its destination. The service provider typically assigns VPI. VCI

SunSet MTT ACM II

Test Set at Customer Premises Figure 53 Connecting to the ATU-C Use the following procedure in the order given: 1. Power up the SunSet MTT. 2. Setup the module for the circuit under test. See Section 2.1.1 for details. 3. After WAITING is displayed, connect the SunSet MTT to the circuit as shown in Figure 56. The module contains an RJ-45 jack (UDSL port). Depending on the access point, use an RJ-45-to-RJ-45 cable, RJ-45-to-RJ-11 cable, or an RJ-45 to alligator clips cable. 4. The test set automatically tries to synchronize with the ATU-C. Refer to the top lines of the screen for status information. 5. While the test set is trying to connect with the ATU-C, it will continue to display WAITING and the xTU-C (CO mode) or xTU-R (CPE mode) LED will blink red. 6. When the ATU-R recognizes the ATU-Cs response, it displays TRAINING. This indicates that it has made contact with the ATU-C and is starting the handshake procedure to establish synchronization; SHOWTIME. 7. If the ATU-R successfully connects with the ATU-C, the test set automatically displays the CURRENT STATUS screen. The message now reads SHOWTIME and the xTU-C (CO mode) or xTU-R (CPE mode) LED is green. See Section 2.2.1 for details on this screen. If unsuccessful, the test set will try again to establish synchronization during which time the xTU-C (CO mode) or xTU-R (CPE mode) LED is red.
