Grade Level: 1st Science Topic: Liquids and Solids Learning Goals Michigan Grade Level Content Expectation Inquiry Process S.IP.01.11 Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the appropriate senses. Inquiry Analysis and Communication S.IA.01.13 Communicate and present ndings of observations.

Reflection and Social Implications S.RS.01.11 Demonstrate scientic concepts through various illustrations, performances, models, exhibits, and activities.

` P.PM.01.11 Demonstrate the ability to sort objects according to observable attributes such as color, shape, size, sinking or floating P.PM.01.21 Demonstrate water as a solid keeps its own shape. (ice) P.PM.01.22 Demonstrate that water as a liquid takes on the shape of various containers

TE804 Learning Goals Template Spring 2012 EPE Chart For (insert unit name here) Patterns* Students sort objects into categories of their choice. Students notice that there are many categories they could create, and that some objects fit in more than one category. (T chart)

Experiences Students are given a wide range of objectssome are solids and some are liquids-and told to sort them into categories they come up with. Explain that not everyone will use the same categories-there is more than one way to do it. Tell students to put various solids in water. Ask them to sort these into categories that they create Give students two solids-tell them to compare and contrast these two solids Give students two liquids-tell them to compare and contrast these two liquids Give students a liquid and solid and tell them to compare and contrast them

Explanations*

Students observe objects, and see that some objects act differently in water and they can arrange objects based on this. (Sort based on how much float/sink)

Liquids and solids can have different colors, hardness and softness-that we can see, feel, touch, smell. Some liquids and solids you can see through others you cannot. Some liquids and solids are shiny others are not. Some liquids have smells others do not. Liquids and solids are made of different materials which have different characteristics which is why they can be sorted into different categories that one can observe.

Students see that solids/liquids can have similarities and differences that they can observe. (Venn diagram)

When water is liquid it is warmer. Since it is warmer it is not held as tightly and can flow and change shape. When gets cold it hardens and turns into ice. When it is harder it is help tightly together, which is why ice cannot change shape when you move it to different containers.

Give students water in a container. Tell Students notice characteristics of liquid students to look at the water and write down water: can see through it, it flows, it characteristics. Put water in a plastic bag, changes shape, it is not sticky ask students for more characteristics of

TE804 Learning Goals Template Spring 2012 water. Give students various containers, instruct students to pour the water into the containers. Ask them to list more characteristics of water. Put this water in the classroom freezer. Put some of the water in cups/the containers used. Put water in a plastic bag in the freezer. Give students the two forms of ice. Ask to write down characteristics of ice. Students create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting ice vs. liquid water Students fill out a cause and effect diagram for water when it is put in the freezer Students notice that ice is colder than liquid water. Students notice ice keeps it shape and does not flow. When liquid water goes in the freezer than it gets cold and hard-and tighter together.

Students notice characteristics of ice: you can see through it, it is cold, it does not change shape or flow

Inquiry * Document each statement with the code for national standards benchmarks or other source.

Application

TE804 Learning Goals Template Spring 2012 Unit Central Question and Model Response Central Question What characteristics could you use to sort objects into different categories or piles What are the characteristics of water as a liquid? and What are the characteristics of water as a solid (ice)?

Model Response You can observe objects and sort them. You can sort by color. You can sort if its liquid or solid. You can sort if it floats or sinks. You can sort if it rolls or does not if its solid. You sort if its see through or not. You can sort if its shiny or dull. You can sort if its smooth or rough or soft (like an animal soft). For liquid you could sort if its sticky or not. You can sort these objects because different things are made of different materials which have different characteristics. When water is a solid it is ice. When it is ice it is help closer together, so it does not change shape based on the container, it does not flow. When water is a liquid it is warm and not held as tightly together, so it flows and changes shape with the container.
