Calculating Area

Area
Abbreviations: A = Area b = base h = height

Rectangle
To find the area multiply the length of the base times the height

Rectangle

A = bh

Parallelogram
Draw a rectangle on graph paper. Cut off a triangle on one side and add it to the other.

Parallelogram
The rectangle becomes a parallelogram so the formula is the same as for a rectangle

Triangle
The area of a triangle is one half of the length of the base times the height

Triangle
Area of the square is 4 times 4 or 16 sq. in. Area of the triangle is one-half 16, or 8 sq.in. A = 1/2 bh A = 1/2 (4)(4) A = 8 sq. in.
