Section 4: Curriculum Integration Element A: Curriculum Integration

Weston Academy implements a Technology Curriculum for each grade level (K-8) that is based upon the Michigan Department of Educations Educational Technology Standards and Expectations. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade utilize technology, such as, interactive Promethean Boards and Student Response Devices as tools for learning. Each classroom is equipped with a Promethean Board and Document Camera. Five digital cameras are available to the staff along with a variety of printers. Technology teachers provide instruction on a weekly schedule to students in the Computer Labs. Each student has individual access to a work station. A Promethean Board is utilized in the labs as a demonstration tool that can be viewed by an entire class of students simultaneously. During the 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th year of implementation of this technology plan, students are will be given many opportunities to generate projects using technology and to reinforce their learning of the core academic subjects in their grade level through guided use of educational software and the Internet resources such as: Study Island, Discovery Education, Tumblebooks. Faculty members use technology, such as Promethean Planet which provides thousands of lesson plans aligned to the Michigan Grade level Content Expectations. Faculty members will continue to use technology to improve teaching and learning, and to reflect on the ways in which various technologies can enhance good teaching and learning practices during the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th years of implementation. At the end of each of these years, the Academy will analyze the year and ensure that the plan is effectively impacting student achievement to the optimal level. The Academy has a current Technology Plan on file with Michigans Department of Education. Goal: Align all district curriculum with the State of Michigan standards for incorporating technology to improve teaching and learning. Each of the curriculum areas are already aligned with the State of Michigans Grade Level Content Expectations. As Weston Academy works to align school curriculum with the State of Michigan technology standards, the school will cover all areas of the K-8 curriculum. We believe that introduction to computers and technology at a young age will directly aid learning later in life. This is why we stress beginning to teach our kindergarten and first grade students the basics of using a computer and the internet (ex. using left and right click on a mouse, opening and closing documents, saving files, and navigating their favorite websites). With a strong background in the basics, students will be able to utilize all of the resources that computers and technology have to offer.

Weston Technology Plan page 9

Technology Literacy as defined by specifics of the State of Michigan Educational Technology Standards and Expectation will be incorporated into the everyday study and work of the current district curriculum areas. These technology standards and expectations are organized in the following general areas: Basic operations and concepts; Social, ethical and human issues; Technology productivity tools; Technology communications tools; Technology research tools, and Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools. Action Plan: Weston Academy will continue to teach and integrate the basic functions of technology across the curriculum. The students will also be exposed to programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Specifically, students will be able to create documents, insert clip art, save files, use word art and import/export pictures. Students will also be able to create slideshow presentations, using specific transitions, sound effects, and design templates. Furthermore, the students will understand how to present such projects using a Promethean Board. Students will utilize the interactive capabilities provided through the use of Student Response Devices. Over the course of the next two years, we will update and expand our website to make it more accessible and user friendly. We will implement the use of Family Access which provides online viewing of student information during the 1st and 2nd years. During the 3rd, 4th and 5 years the academy will ensure the full implementation of all Family Access components. These include modules titled: attendance, grading, homework, and school calendars. Family Access will also provide links to teacher web pages. In addition, access to educational sites such as Study Island will be provided through the school, and we will post a link to the State of Michigan standards for parent access. The district will provide opportunities for teachers to learn new as well as existing technology and technology integration techniques through workshops and seminars offered throughout the school year and summer months. These offerings will provide teachers with examples of lesson plans based on best practices for effectively integrating technology in each grade level and content area The implementation of this plan of action will proactively be completed over the course of the next 4-5 years. Each year will build upon the next. This could include general in-service training and specialized training provided by the schools Technology Consultant, the schools Technology Teacher, software suppliers, textbook publishers, Oakland University, and/or Wayne RESA. At the end of each of these years, the Academy will analysis the year and ensure that the plan is effectively impacting student achievement to the optimal level.
