GRADUATE STUDENT POSITION

THESIS TOPICS: Bio-inspired dry adhesives for rough surfaces: Modeling, manufacturing and testing of novel, synthetic adhesives inspired by animals such as geckos, spiders, beetles, and anoles. Main focus will be on improving rough surface performance through heterogonous modulus and optimized fiber geometry. High spatial resolution sensing using piezoelectric high aspect ratio structures: This project is aimed at developing a very high spatial resolution array sensor through use of piezoelectric sensing elements. This device can eventually be used as not only a sensor, but also an actuator, and energy harvesting device. The effect of local mechanical excitation on bacterial attachment and propagation: Primary goal is to study the bacterial behavior on structured surfaces which can be mechanically excited locally and how this excitation effects biofilm formation.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Thorough knowledge in mechanics of materials (preferably contact mechanics) Ability to code in Matlab, C, C++ Familiarity with FEM software (Ansys, Comsol, etc.) Experience in SolidWorks modeling Basic circuit knowledge and ability to interface computers with sensors, cameras, automated stages Basic MEMs knowledge
