This questionare is designed for our research into An Anglophone-Vietnamese crosscultural study on refusing a request in universities. You can be confident that you will not be
identified in any discussion of the data.

Directions: Please write your response in the blank area. Do not spend a lot of time
thinking about what answer you think you should provide; instead, please respond as naturally as
possible.
1. You are an assistant to a Professor. At the end of the office hours, you are going to leave.
The Professor asks if you can stay with him/her and help him/her with some papers.
However, you can not come home late because it is your mothers birthday. You refuse
his/her request by saying:
I am really very sorry I have an urgent piece of work at home.
2. You have class on the 8th floor of the building. Your Professor asks you to go to the first
floor to borrow some teaching equipment. You have got flu and feel so tired. You refuse
