Introduction

Why do we study materials? The discipline of materials science involves investigating the relationships that exist between the structures and properties of materials. In contrast, materials engineering is, on the basis of these structure-property correlations, designing or engineering the structure of a material to produce a predetermined set of properties. Throughout this text we draw attention to the relationships between material properties and structural elements.

Question 1 A specimen of magnesium having a rectangular cross section of dimensions 3.2 mm x 19.1 mm is deformed in tension. Using the load-elongation data tabulated as follows complete parts (a) through (f)

c) determine the yield strength at the strain offset of 0.002 approx = 138.5
(refer on graph)

d) Determine the tensile strength of this alloy. (refer on graph) Tensile strength or ultimate tensile strength is the stress at the maximum on stress strain graph it is 234.62 MPa

e) Determine the elongation of the specimen when a tensile stress of 100 MPa is applied
%EL = ( ( ) x 100 )

%EL = 0.002 x 100 = 0.2% After tensile stress of 100 MPA is applied, the elongation is 0.2%

QUESTION 2 A cylindrical rod of steel (E = 207 GPa) having yield strength of 310 GPa is to be subjected to a load of 11100 N. If the length of the rod is 500 mm, what must be the diameter to allow an elongation of 0.38 mm? Given : F : 11100 : 550 mm Solution = A= = = Ex

The diameter to allow an elongation of 0.38 mm is 9.478 x

QUESTION 3 For a 50 wt% cu 50wt% Ag alloy, make schematic sketches of the microstructure that would be observed for conditions of very slow cooling at the following temperature : 1000C0,800C0,and 600C0.Label all phases and indicate their approximate composition. Answer: 1000C0 50 wt% Ag - 50 wt% Cu

800C0 8.2 wt% Ag - 91.8 wt% Cu L 66.7 wt% Ag - 33.3 wt% Cu

600C0 2.9 wt% Ag - 97.1 wt% Cu 96 wt% Ag - 4 wt% Cu
