Multiple channel allocation

Aloha
A protocol is used for satellite & terrestrial radio transmission is called Aloha
Pure Aloha Slotted Aloha

Pure Aloha
In pure Aloha, user can transmit at any time It doesnt check whether the channel is busy before transmission Station are allowed to the channel whenever they have data to transmit Because the threat of data collision exists, each station must either monitor its transmission on rebroadcast or await an acknowledgement from destination station By comparing the transmitted packet with the received packet or by the lack of an acknowledgement the transmitted station can determine the success of the transmission packet If the transmission was unsuccessful it is resent after a random amount of time to reduce the probability of re-collision

Slotted Aloha
In Slotted Aloha, reduce the chance of collision by dividing the channel into time slots The user sent only at the beginning of a time slot The channel bandwidth is continuous stream of slots whose length is the time necessary to transmit one packet A station with a packet to sent will transmit on next available slot boundary In the event of collision, each station involved in the collision retransmit at some random time in order to reduce the possibility of collision Obviously the limits imposed which govern the random retransmission of the packet will have effect on the delay associated with successful packet delivery

If the limits is too short, the probability of collision is high

If the limit is too long, the probability of collision is low but there is a unnecessary delay in the retransmission
