PHILIPPINE COLLEGE OF CHEST PHYSICIANS Committee on Awards

RENE I. JUANEZA, MD, FPCP, FACP (Hon), FPCCP

Most Outstanding Fellow

Given to a PCCP Fellow in recognition for his outstanding achievement in research, as teacher or academician and his outstanding contribution to the community and service to the College.

Dr. Rene I. Juaneza epitomizes an ideal pulmonologist. After his training, he returned to Iloilo City to start the first subspecialty practice in pulmonary and critical care in his province. By this simple act of settling in the province, he has shown and proved that a specialty practice could survive in a provincial setting, thus inspiring young physicians to take pulmonology and practice in their community. His vision for a specialized lung care to his fellow Ilonggos is now a reality, a proof to it, is the more than 20 practicing pulmonologists in the province.

For more than three decades he has been a consistent prime mover in the medical field in Iloilo. He is the chairman of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Department of Iloilo Doctors Hospital, a position he holds since 1983. Confident and committed to excellence, he became the president of Iloilo Medical Society in 1985. His exemplary works were recognized by the medical society and was awarded the Most Outstanding Physician in 1986.

As an outstanding public servant, he has served not only the local community of Iloilo but other parts of the country through the outreach projects of the Philippine Foundation for Lung Health, Research and Development, where he served as president in 1998-2000. His generosity and desire to serve others made him never afraid to take on a challenging task to meet the mission and vision of the foundation. He has then taken the challenge of public service courageously and for this he was granted the Most Outstanding Ilonggo Award for Medicine in 1997 and one of the 25 Most Outstanding Citizens of Western Visayas in 2006.

For his commitment to academic excellence, he was an associate professor at the Iloilo Doctors College of Medicine for almost two decades. For the joy of teaching, Dr. Juaneza finds time to inspire medical residents-in-training through his clinical teachings. As a tireless teacher, he became a member of the Philippine Specialty Board of Internal Medicine and eventually the chairman of the board of examiners in 1998.

Aside from being a dedicated teacher, he also exhibits great interest in research. His paper on pulmonary embolism is often used as reference in clinical studies. Despite his age, he participates and shares his insights on the researches of residents-in-training.

Though his medical practice is in Iloilo, distance did not deter him to be a board of regents of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) and became the first Ilonggo president of PCP in 2006-2007, inspiring non-Metro Manila leaders to aspire for the top position. His unswerving commitment to PCCP compel him to actively participate in its scientific activities. He chaired the previous PCCP midyear convention in Iloilo. He is also one of the most sought-after lecturer in Iloilo and the critical care council of PCCP.

Guided by heart, passion and compassion in all his undertakings as a leader, teacher, public servant and clinician. Dr. Juaneza deserves to be the PCCP Most Outstanding Fellow.
