Split disc check valves for the prevention of reverse flow

The Spirax Sarco wafer pattern range of split disc check valves type SDCV provides an effective maintenance free solution for the prevention of reverse flow in pipelines carrying most types of liquids, gases including steam and condensate. Designed to fit between two pipeline flanges, they provide a compact installation when compared size-for-size with conventional swing and lift type check valves. The Spirax Sarco range of SDCV split disc wafer check valve bodies are available in carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel, and with seating options of metal or soft fluoroelastomer to match most applications.

Designed and manufactured in accordance with API 594.

Larger sizes have an integral lifting eye. Fully complies with the requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive 97 / 23 / EC.

Self-centering for fool proof installation.

Seat options in stainless steel and Viton for oils, gases, steam and water applications. Disc to seat shut-off conforms to API 598 for all SDCV's.

Flange standards: EN 1092 PN16 and PN40, ANSI 150 and ANSI 300, JIS / KS 10K and 20K.

User benefits

Can be used with a wide variety of liquids, gases and vapours. Compact design for simple installation between a wide range of flange types and in any plane except vertically downwards. Each model designed to fit between a variety of flange standards - simplifying and reducing spares stock holdings. Wide variety of body materials and seating allows product matching to any specific application. Computer aided product design and modern production methods ensure product of the highest quality. Materials of construction ensure low wear rates with minimal maintenance. Short face-to-face design of an SDCV inherently makes it lighter and more compact leading to easier installation, maintenance, and lower cost. Fully complies with the European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/ 23/ EC.

How they work

Spirax Sarco SDCV wafer check valves are opened by the flow of pressure of the fluid and closed by the spring when flow ceases and before reverse flow can occur. Open Closed

Installation
The SDCV uses the body for location so that its outside diameter touches all flange bolts which automatically self-centres the valve in the pipeline. Split disc check valves can be installed with the liquid /gas flowing horizontally into the valve (A) or, with the liquid / gas flowing vertically upwards through the valve (B).

Check valve selection

Generally the selection of a split disc check valve is easy. However there are a number of points which need to be considered. Correct selection is assured by following the checklist below:

Review application. Confirm the flow direction. Confirm line size and flange standard. Confirm preferred materials of construction. Determine if metal-to-metal or soft seat required. (Remember soft seat versions have a lower temperature limit). Confirm certification /inspection requirements.

Split disc check valves are not recommended for installation with the liquid/gas flowing vertically downwards through the valve or applications where heavily pulsating flow exists, such as close to a reciprocating compressor.

Typical applications

Prevention of reverse flow

Installed after each pump outlet in water distribution systems to: Prevent reverse flow should one pump fail. Allow automatic changeover without manual isolation.

Pipeline fitting protection

Prevents problems with pipeline fittings such as flowmeters, control valves and strainers which are susceptible to damage by reverse flow.

The SDCV can be used in a wide variety of applications including:

Process lines. Oil lines. Heating systems. Hot and cold water systems. Sprinkler installations. Steam and condensate lines.

And in industries as diverse as:

Chemicals. Power generation. Textiles. Pharmaceuticals. Food production. Shipbuilding. Pulp and paper.

In fact, any industry where fluid flows in pipes.
