Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates discussed the shipments as local and federal authorities completed the painstaking process of disarming suspect James Holmes' apartment, which was found booby-trapped with explosive devices after the shooting at a multiplex theater several miles away. On Saturday, the local coroner's officer released the names of the 12 people killed. As evening fell, residents gathered at a local high school to mourn the passing of a classmate who graduated in May. "We've become aware that the suspect over the last four months received a high volume of deliveries to both his work and home addresses," Oates said. "This begins to explain how he got his hands on all the magazines
and ammunition. "We also think it begins to explain some of the materials he had in his apartment," Oates said. "What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation." A gunman wearing a full suit of tactical body armor, helmet and gas mask opened fire at a packed midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" early on Friday morning, killing 12 people and wounding 58. Holmes, 24, was arrested minutes later in a parking lot behind the cinema. Among the dead were a 6-yearold girl who had just learned to swim, a young man celebrating his 27th birthday and an aspiring sportscaster who missed by minutes being on the scene of a Toronto mall shooting earlier this summer. The mass shooting stunned the nation, evoking memories of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, 17 miles from Aurora, where two students opened fire and killed 12 students and a teacher. It also reverberated in the U.S. presidential race. Both President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, toned down their campaigns on Friday, pulled ads from Colorado and dedicated scheduled events to the victims.
Obama was scheduled to travel to Colorado on Sunday to honor the shooting victims, an administration official said. 'THE JOKER' Those who witnessed the shooting told of a horrific scene, with dazed victims bleeding from bullet wounds, spitting up blood and crying for help. "I slipped on some blood and landed on a lady. I shook her and said, 'We need to go; get up,' and there was no response, so I presumed she was dead," said Tanner Coon, 17. When police arrested Holmes, he was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a Glock .40-caliber handgun, Oates said. Police found an additional Glock .40-caliber handgun in his car, parked just outside the theater's rear emergency exit, he said. Police said Holmes had purchased the weapons legally at three area gun stores in the last 60 days and bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition online, including a 100-round drum magazine for an assault rifle. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said the suspect was being held in solitary confinement to protect him from other prisoners, a routine move in high-profile cases. Holmes, who authorities said had
dyed his hair red and called himself "the Joker" in a reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was due to make an initial court appearance on Monday. Little has surfaced from Holmes's past to suggest he was capable of such violence. Until last month, he was studying for a doctoral degree in neuroscience at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical School, a few blocks from his apartment. A top student, he had earned a prestigious federal grant from the National Institutes for Health to support his studies. The grants are intended for "outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology," university spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said. Holmes had spent a year in the doctoral program, where a fellow student described him as quiet and studious, before he abruptly withdrew from the university last month. He gave no reason for his departure. Holmes kept a low profile off campus as well. He was not active under his own name on social media sites like Facebook and both the landlord and fellow tenants of his red-brick apartment building said they knew little about him.
SLAIN STUDENT REMEMBERED Neighbors who met him in the local bar described him as relaxed and friendly, though a few recalled him displaying brief flashes of anger over seemingly trivial exchanges. The University of Colorado Hospital, which treated some of the shooting victims, said 10 people had been released and five remained in critical condition. The Medical Center of Aurora said four of its seven patients remained in the intensive care unit, while three others were on the main trauma floor. A memorial of flowers, candles and stuffed animals quickly sprung up where the shooting rampage took place. A handwritten sign read: "7/20 gone not forgotten." At the Saturday evening memorial service at Gateway High School, shooting victim and recent graduate A.J. Boik was remembered as beloved former student and talented artist who was bound for college in the fall. "He was a very big part of this community," said Tami Avery, whose son played sports with Boik. "He will be dearly missed." Syrian forces fight rebels in Damascus, residents flee

By Dominic Evans and Khaled Yacoub Oweis BEIRUT/AMMAN| Sat Jul 21, 2012 6:53pm EDT (Reuters) - Syrian troops backed by helicopters and tanks have struck back in Damascus against rebel fighters emboldened by a bomb attack against President Bashar al-Assad's inner circle. Assad's forces, who also pushed into a rebel-held district in the northerly commercial hub of Aleppo on Saturday, targeted pockets of lightly armed rebels, who moved about the streets on foot and attacked security installations and roadblocks. Residents said the sound of shelling in the capital was so intense at dusk that they were unable to distinguish it from the traditional cannon blast marking the end of the daily fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Opposition activists said helicopters fired rockets into a neighborhood near the southerly Sayida Zeinab district, causing dozens of casualties. They did not have any other details. "In Damascus, people continue to search desperately for safety," the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement in Geneva.
"Humanitarian needs are growing as the situation in the city worsens and as large numbers of people flee their neighborhoods in search of safe haven. The ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have intensified their response to the situation." The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group that monitors the violence, said 140 people, including 43 troops, had been killed across Syria on Saturday. Most of them died in the province of Homs, epicenter of the uprising. One Western diplomat who declined to be named said Assad was moving troops to protect his capital and compared him to a doctor "abandoning the patient's limbs to save the organs". Most shops were closed and there was only light traffic - although more than in the past few days. Some police checkpoints, abandoned earlier in the week, were manned again. Many petrol stations were closed, having run out of fuel, and those that were open had huge lines of cars waiting to fill up. Residents reported long queues at bakeries. The army's push in the capital occurred after rebels assassinated four of Assad's top security officials last week as part of a sixday attack in the capital that they dubbed "Damascus Volcano".
Rebels also captured three border crossings with Iraq and Turkey, and on Saturday an Iraqi security source said gunmen appeared to be taking over a fourth at Yarubiya in Syria's Kurdish northeast. NO COMMENT FROM ASSAD Assad, battling a 16-month-old uprising against his family's four decades of autocratic rule, has not spoken in public since the assassinations, and failed to attend funeral ceremonies for his brother -in-law and two other slain officials on Friday. A bloody crackdown on what began as a peaceful revolt has increasingly become an armed conflict between an establishment dominated by Assad's Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and rebels drawn largely from the Sunni majority. U.N. Secretary General Ban Kimoon said he was sending his peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous and top military adviser General Babacar Gaye to Syria to assess the situation. Opposition activists in Aleppo, Syria's biggest city, said hundreds of families were fleeing residential areas on Saturday after the military swept into the Saladin district, which had been in rebel hands for two days. Fighting was also reported in the densely-populated, poor
neighborhood of al-Sakhour. "The sound of bombardment has been non-stop since last night. For the first time we feel Aleppo has turned into a battle zone," a housewife, who declined to be named, said by phone from the city. REBEL BORDER CROSSING RAID On the Iraqi-Syrian border, a security source and a separate witness said they saw gunmen in a civilian car enter the Yarubiya crossing point on the Syrian side of the frontier. "When we contacted the Syrians there, they told us the Syrian security elements are gradually withdrawing from the place," said the security source, who works for the Iraqi customs department. It was not immediately possible to verify the reports on the border post, but Syrian opposition activists said several towns in Syria's Kurdish northeast had passed - without a fight - into local hands in recent days as central authority eroded. The surge in violence has trapped millions of Syrians, turned sections of Damascus into ghost areas, and sent tens of thousands of refugees fleeing to neighboring Lebanon. The U.N. Security Council has approved a 30-day extension for a ceasefire observer mission, but
Ban has recommended changing its focus to pursuing prospects for a political solution - effectively accepting there is no truce to monitor. Diplomats said only half of the 300 unarmed observers would be needed for Ban's suggested plan, and several monitors were seen departing from Damascus on Saturday. Speaking two days after Russia and China vetoed a resolution to impose U.N. sanctions on Assad's government, Ban called on the Security Council to "redouble efforts to forge a united way forward and exercise its collective responsibility". "The Syrian government has manifestly failed to protect civilians and the international community has collective responsibility to live up to the U.N. Charter and act on its principles," he said. Regional and Western powers have voiced concern the conflict might become a full-blown sectarian war that could spill across borders. But Assad's opponents remain outgunned and divided. Local and federal bomb experts used a remote-controlled robot to disable two trip wires, then detonated a tube known as a "water shot" to disable the control box. By Saturday afternoon, police had removed the last of the devices, packed them in sand in a dump truck and drove them away. The suspect, James Holmes is accused of going on a shooting rampage at the movie theater during Friday's midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." He was packing as many as 6,000 rounds of ammunition with the ability to shoot up to 50 a minute, police said. Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson says the booby trap trip wire at his apartment was "meant to kill," the first person who opened the door to the apartment. The Aurora police chief says the trap was meant specifically to kill a police officer who might have opened the door. "We sure as hell are angry," Chief Dan Oates said about the trap being aimed at officers. Oates also tried to head off a mental incompetence defense by saying
Holmes was deliberate and calculating in receiving numerous commercial deliveries to his home and workplaces over the past four months. "This is some serious stuff that our team is dealing with," Sgt. Carlson said. Witnesses have reported hearing two small booms during the disarming process. Holmes' apartment was loaded with explosives and authorities say they will not know for sure

Authorities said Saturday that they hope to begin allowing residents back into their homes by Sunday. They also said they hope to finish with the investigation at the movie theater by Monday, with the goal of handing the theater back to the owners by Wednesday. Relatives of two of the twelve dead confirmed late Friday that their loved ones were killed during the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." The family of Alex Sullivan issued a statement confirming his death. He died on his 27th birthday. Twenty-three-year-old Micayla Medek was also among the dead. Her father's cousin, Anita Busch, says the sad news at least brought peace to the family. The brother of Jessica Ghawi previously confirmed his sister's death. "He looked like an assassin ready to go to war," said Jordan Crofter, a moviegoer who was unhurt in the attack early Friday, about a half-hour after the special midnight opening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Holmes, used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, stopping only to reload.
The suspect marched up the aisle in the stadium-style theater, picking off those who tried to flee, witnesses said. Authorities said he hit scores of people, with a few of the 70 victims suffering their injuries not by gunfire but in the ensuing chaos. At least one person was struck in an adjacent theater by gunfire that went through the wall. "He would reload and shoot and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed," said Jennifer Seeger, adding that bullet casings landed on her head and burned her forehead. Within minutes, frantic emergency services calls brought some 200 police officers, ambulances and emergency crews to the theater. Holmes was captured in the parking lot and remains in police custody. Police said they later found that his nearby apartment was boobytrapped. Authorities gave no motive for the attack. The FBI said there was no indication of ties to any terrorist groups. In New York City, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said: "It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He has his hair painted red. He said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman." Assad's forces, who also pushed into a rebel-held district in the northerly commercial hub of Aleppo on Saturday, targeted pockets of lightly armed rebels, who moved about the streets on foot and attacked security installations and roadblocks. Residents said the sound of shelling in the capital was so intense at dusk that they were unable to distinguish it from the traditional cannon blast marking the end of the daily fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Opposition activists said helicopters fired rockets into a neighborhood near the southerly Sayida Zeinab district, causing dozens of casualties. They did not have any other details. "In Damascus, people continue to search desperately for safety," the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement in Geneva.
"Humanitarian needs are growing as the situation in the city worsens and as large numbers of people flee their neighborhoods in search of safe haven. The ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have intensified their response to the situation." The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group that monitors the violence, said 140 people, including 43 troops, had been killed across Syria on Saturday. Most of them died in the province of Homs, epicenter of the uprising. One Western diplomat who declined to be named said Assad was moving troops to protect his capital and compared him to a doctor "abandoning the patient's limbs to save the organs". Most shops were closed and there was only light traffic - although more than in the past few days. Some police checkpoints, abandoned earlier in the week, were manned again. Nursing Home Wants Probe After Union Walkout

AP The owner of several Connecticut nursing homes is calling for a criminal probe after union workers staged a mass walkout earlier this month, allegedly vandalizing and sabotaging the health care facilities in the process. Among the allegations is that the workers, supposedly disgruntled over protracted labor talks, switched around the IDs of Alzheimer's patients. The alleged sabotage, which also purportedly included tampering with medication records and removing patient identification bands, occurred in three of the companys five Connecticut facilities in the overnight hours before the July 3 strike, according to police reports and the complaint HealthBridge Management filed Thursday with the Chief State's Attorney office. Company officials suspect the acts were committed by some of the employees who went on strike. Those employees are represented by a chapter of the
Service Employees International Union, the largest healthcare union in North America with roughly 1.1 million members. Its especially heinous to do it to somebody with Alzheimers, said a HealthBridge spokesman, adding that dietary information also was compromised. He said the acts put patients' lives at risk
and if somebody had a medical emergency in that window "they could have been in grave peril." In the formal complaint, company executives also point out similar incidents reportedly occurred in 2001 at several nursing homes involved in labor negotiations with the chapter, New England Heath Care
Employees Union District 1199. These (recent) incidents posed a serious risk of harm to HealthBridge residents, the complaint states. Based on the timing of the recent HealthBridge incidents and the striking similarities between those incidents and the illegal conduct uncovered in the 2001

Later, police began entering the theater, asking people to hold their hands up as they evacuated the building. Some of the victims were treated for chemical exposure apparently related to canisters thrown by the gunman. Those hurt included a 4month-old baby, who was treated at a hospital and released. Authorities started to remove the bodies from the theater on Friday afternoon. Officials wheeled a black bag on a stretcher out of the front entrance, placing it in the back of a minivan. Ten people died in the theater, while two others died from their injuries later. Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban neighborhood in San Diego. Holmes played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college. On Friday morning, police escorted Holmes' father, a manager of a software company, from their home while his mother, a nurse, stayed inside, receiving visitors who came to offer
support. Holmes also has a younger sister. "As you can understand, the Holmes family is very upset about all of this," Lt. Andra Brown, the San Diego police spokeswoman, told reporters in the driveway of the family home. "It's a tragic event and it's taken everyone by surprise. They are definitely trying to work through this." Police released a statement from his family that said: "Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved." There have been no indications so far that Holmes had any run-ins with the law before Friday. Tom Mai, a retired electrical engineer, said Holmes was a "shy guy" who came from a "very, very nice family." Holmes graduated from University of California, Riverside, in the spring of 2010 a bachelor's degree in neuroscience, a school spokesman said. Mai said the mother told him Holmes couldn't find a job after earning a master's degree and returned to school. He enrolled in the Ph.D. neuroscience program at the University of Colorado-Denver in June 2011 but left the program last month, according to the university. Holmes lived in an apartment in
Aurora, and FBI agents and police who went there discovered it was booby-trapped when they used a camera at the end of a 12-foot pole to look inside. Authorities evacuated surrounding residences, and about two dozen people headed to a shelter set up by the Red Cross at a local school. Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a county detention facility Saturday, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. Company executives said Jepsen originally rejected their request for an investigation, saying they should instead call the local police. Jepsen has since recused himself from the investigation, his office confirmed Friday with FoxNews.com. The complaint has been filed with Chief States Attorney Kevin T. Kane. Pinpointing the individuals involved is unlikely because the facilities do not have video cameras, in part because they would violate federal patientprivacy laws. The sides are deadlocked in a roughly 18-month contract dispute involving such issues as pay, medical insurance and retirement plans. HealthBridge argues that cuts were necessary as a result of a very difficult economic situation that includes increased competition in senior care and big
cuts in Medicare. The company in April made its so-called last, best, final offer. Organizers for the local union chapter have said the workers voted in June to strike because HealthBridge acted unlawfully by ending negotiations and implementing the final offer. They said changes will result in at least 500 employees, including nurses and medical technicians, losing roughly $10,000 annually over the next six years. By their outrageous, inhumane and unlawful actions, HealthBridge has given workers no other alternative, chapter President David Pickus said after the vote. This is yet another instance of the wealthy 1 percent waging war on the 99 percent of us who work for a living. The union did not return requests Saturday to discuss the alleged vandalism and sabotage incidents but has reportedly said members are not involved. The HealthBridge facilities offer rehabilitation services, in addition to long-term care for seniors. The

Ubisoft: Desmonds Assassins Creed days are numbered

Weve seen quite a few Assassins Creed releases since the first one hit shelves back in 2007, and even though weve met a lot of different characters along the way, one thing has remained the same: modern-day assassin Desmond Miles is constantly featured throughout the series. That may not be the case for much longer, however, as Assassins Creed 3 creative lead Alex Hutchinson tells Polygon that the Desmond story line has to wrap up sooner or later, presumably with the series continuing after Desmonds tale has come to an end. According to Hutchinson, the Assassins Creed series risks losing resonance with fans if Desmonds overarcing story line continues on for too much longer. I think Desmond needs to end, Hutchinson said. At some point. You know what I mean? Things that go on too long lack resonance. Were asking people to remember seven years worth of
story. Which is like saying you were in junior high and now youre finishing college. And you need to remember what you were doing in junior high. Hutchinson compared Desmonds part in the Assassins Creed universe to Rod Sterlings role introducing each episode of The Twilight Zone, saying despite the fact that each episode had its own unique story, Sterling was

Now that we have a release date for Windows 8, its time to get down to the nitty-gritty and talk about apps. All of the apps weve seen for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview have been free, but obviously, that wont be the case when the full version of Windows 8 becomes available. Even though well surely see a ton of free apps available on the Windows Store, developers will have the option of setting prices for their apps as well. Microsoft has detailed the pricing scheme it will eventually use for the Windows Store, saying in a post on the MSDN Blog that app prices can range from $1.49 all the way up to $999.99. In an apparent attempt to make the Windows Store stand out from all the other app stores, developers wont have the option of pricing their apps at $0.99, so dont count on having a seemingly endless supply of dollar deals to browse
through on the Windows Store. The company also says that it will support successful apps by only taking a 20% fee on apps that generate $25,000 or more in sales. Until apps reach that $25,000 milestone, however, Microsoft will be taking an industry-standard cut of 30%. Additionally, Microsoft is taking a try before you buy approach
to the Windows Store, letting developers offer a free trial period for their apps. A trial lasts for seven days, and naturally gives users the option of backing out of a full purchase should they decide they dont like the app during the trial window. There are few movies that are as bad as the 1966 horror film MANOS: The Hands of Fate, which sits very near the bottom of IMDB's ratings list. I can think of a few almost as bad, like Robot Monster(guy in gorilla suit wearing a space helmet), Hercules Against the Moon Men(sciencefiction and Greek myth combining the worst elements of both), and maybe Santa Claus Conquers the Martians(Martians kidnap Santa so Mars kids can have Christmas). Certainly, though, MANOS is a stunner. Without going too deeply into the plot, it's about a vacationing family who happen upon a cult in the Texas desert. The film was shot in less than 3 months for $19,000 and directed by an insurance salesman. The handheld camera being used could only shoot in 32 second spurts, so the editing is, shall we say, a bit choppy. Chunks of plot are unconnected, the night shots are plagued with moths, and one character (Torgo) may be a satyr.
MANOS would have probably remained unknown and unmourned except for the thorough mocking it received as the source film for an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. After Joel and the bots suffered through the screening, both Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank admitted that this experiment was too horrible even for their evil scheming ways. After that, MANOS reemerged as a cult "classic" despite its nearunwatchability. If you can't get enough MANOS, then you're in luck; there's a shiny new iPhone game based on the film. Mashable notes today that the game is coming to your iOS device from FreakZone games in the UK. It's built in the style of an old NES 8-bit side scroller, and it will be unleashed July 26.
Apparently the game is not completely pure MANOS; there are bits and monsters thrown in from other bad movies, and the soundtrack is made of themes from MANOS. If the game does well, you guessed it, more bad movies will be used for sequels. If you're a MANOS: Hands of Fate cultie, or even if you're not, the game should be worth a few plays. If you haven't seen the actual movie, frankly, I advise caution. If you really need to see this bomb and have some fun, MANOS will be screening nationwide via satellite in August as a special one-night event with live commentary from the RiffTrax(ex- MST3K cast) guys. Economic Countdown To The Olympics 4: Would The Euro Be A Winning Team?

With just a few days left until the pre-opening soccer games begin in the UK, we continue our five part series ( Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) on the intersection between markets and the Olympics by considering whether an integrated Europe would have performed relatively better- i.e. would 2+2>4 - and what are the factors. Goldman's analysis of the pros and cons of 'integrating' their Olympic teams is extremely apropos the current deteriorating (yet desperately dreaming of improving) coordination of these 17 disparate nations. The answer, of course, is that there are some benefits from this medal 'integration' in specific cases but since German reunification, their medal performance has deteriorated - even in the team events where aggregating talent pools should have its greatest gains. In a 'zero-sum' context such as competing for Olympic medals, Germany's gains must come at the expense of other countries- and rather notably there are few French medal winners before or after an 'integration. If the Olympic teams of Euro area countries were to unify in the manner of their monetary policies, what impact would this have on their Olympic medal-winning performance? Applying the logic of Franz Beckenbauer to the Euro area would suggest a significant improvement. If, as Beckenbauer expected, a united Germany would outperform the two separate Germanies, an Olympic team combining the sporting prowess of 17 Euro area countries should excel. At a minimum, on the basis of Beckenbauers logic, one would expect a combined Euro area team to win more medals than the sum of those won by teams from its constituent individual parts. Integration: Pros and Cons But there is an important caveat here. While combining forces will improve the quality of a team by widening and deepening the pool of talent from which selection can be made, it also reduces the number of entries in the competition. For a team sport like soccer, the benefits of the former are likely to outweigh the costs of the latter: hence Beckenbauers assertion. In the Olympics, individual rather than team sports dominate: a unified Euro area team would have a significantly smaller number of competitors than 17 individual countries. Where margins of winning are small and (as a result) luck inevitably plays a relatively more substantial role in determining results, having fewer entrants may lower the final medal tally. A variety of other relevant factors also support the expectation of better medal performance from a unified team: The intra-Euro area competition implied by the need to select Olympic entrants from a much wider pool may force athletes to train harder simply to be selected, honing their skills in a way that makes them more competitive on the global Olympic stage. Cristobal Montoro, the Spain's finance minister has made a liquidity destroying proposal to tax short-term financial transactions at an astonishing 56% tax rate. Businesses are already upset over hikes in the VAT and have threatened to leave Spain. Interestingly, in spite of raising taxes elsewhere, the VAT was lowered on the highly subsidized renewable energy sector. Why? To use our example above, by comparing how German medal performance changed across reunification with how (say) French medal performance changed over the same period, we purge the impact of Chinese Olympic participation from our estimate of the impact of German reunification, since both Germany and France will have been influenced by China.
Not surprisingly, the key challenge in applying this approach is to identify a good control group. Two criteria are relevant here: (1) controls should perform similarly to Germany prior to reunification; and (2) controls should not experience a spill-over from the impact of reunification on German performance. The latter criterion is challenging: in a zero sum context like competing for Olympic medals, Germanys gains must come at the expense of other countries. Nonetheless, we apply this difference-indifferences approach and select France as the control. The results are shown in column B of the table on the previous page. Across the set of sports evaluated, the results remain mixed. We do see some cases of improvement, notably in hockey. But on average we identify a deterioration in German medalwinning performance after reunification. However, a closer look at the table reveals that France may not be a very good control group. There are few French medal winners in the sports we consider, either before or after reunification. While this suggests caution in interpreting the difference-in-differences result, evaluating the robustness of our base case by using US results as an alternative control (not shown, for brevity) does not alter the conclusions.
Benefits of Sporting Integration Our analysis identifies benefits from sporting integration in specific cases, but these cannot be generalised across all events. On average, German medal performance at the Olympics has deteriorated since reunification, even in the team events where the benefits should have been greatest. We have identified a large number of potential pros and cons of unification: to capture the benefits, one naturally needs to develop a structure that maximises the former and minimises the latter. Phoenix Pastor Jailed Over Home Bible Study to Serve 3 Years?

July 17, 2012| 3:38 pm The Arizona pastor who is currently imprisoned for hosting regular Bible studies at his home may have to serve up to three years for violating his probation. Michael Salman, an ordained pastor of Church of God in Christ and the founder of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Phoenix, appeared in court Monday on charges that he violated his probation by continuing to hold Bible studies on his 4.6 acre property with more than 12 people, and for failing to pay over $12,000 in fines. The Phoenix Municipal Court had earlier ruled that Salman was not to have more than 12 people at his home until he met the city's building codes, fire codes and other safety codes. "He was found guilty of violating that (12 people limit) today. So in two to four weeks supposedly the court will decide what they are going to do in terms of his violation," said John Whitehead, Salman's attorney and founding president of the legal group The Rutherford Institute, to The Christian Post after the Monday court hearing. INSTITUTE Whitehead noted that 15 to 20 people were meeting in Salman's home for Bible study after the court's order of a 12-persons limit. "[They brought him to court] to see if they are going to extend the 60 days in jail," he said. "He is on three year probation, which means that he could get up to three years in jail." The city of Phoenix began interacting with Salman about zoning concerns starting in 2006, when the Zoning Administrator informed him that his property was analogous to a church and therefore he should adjust his home to comply with the Zoning Ordinance. According to the City of Phoenix Prosecutor's Office, the city has repeatedly asked Salman to comply with the safety codes and "he chose to ignore these requests for voluntary compliance prior to the commencement of any proceedings." But Brad Dacus, founding president of the Pacific Justice Institute which has defended several home Bible study cases weighed in and disagreed with the city's argument. "The city is dealing with a 5-acre parcel of land. Based on the information we have received, there are no bona fide health or safety concerns that have been brought to light," said Dacus to

There are no imminent risks of injuries for anyone gathered for this religious purpose. And there are no bona fide nuisances that have arisen since its usage. Salman and his attorney decry the city's harsh punishments meted out over a home Bible study to be in violation of the defendant's religious freedom. Dacus also commented on the most recent court hearing, "To the extent to which the city of Phoenix has placed this limitation of only 12 people being able to meet in this home, such a narrow limitation is suspect as necessary and it seems arbitrary in terms of the number selected and as well as

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England So much was going on at the British Open on Saturday that it was hard to tell whether this was a golf tournament or a mystery novel. The what-ifs were as fascinating as the who-done-its. The who-done-its were mainly Adam Scott, Zach Johnson and Graeme McDowell. Scott, a handsome and heretofore underachieving Aussie, played with 36-hole leader Brandt Snedeker in the final twosome, caught him quickly as Snedeker's magic-wand putter ran out of batteries, and walked right down the middle of most fairways to a two-under-par 68 and a four-shot lead. "It was pretty solid stuff," Scott said. Johnson, the best that Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has to offer, rebounded from a stubbed-toe 74 Friday at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes course and put up the best score of the day with a 66, leaving him six back of Scott. "I hit some really good shots today," he said, "but I also think I left a few out there." Another key character was McDowell, whose recent performances have begun to beg the question of just exactly who
should be the big-name golfer from Northern Ireland. Another was Snedeker's Nashville roots and his admission he was a country music fan. Fun song titles under consideration included: "I lost my wife and my putter and I miss it." But five bogeys in seven holes in the middle of his round turned the fun lyrics sour. Another what-if was Masters champion Bubba Watson. What if he had kept on going after making four birdies in six holes around the turn? Would we get another chance, in a Sunday climactic moment of a major, to see Bubba wrap a shot around six trees or through a storm drain, or over a highway sign? But a double bogey on the 15th made Watson's walk home more limp than swagger and his 68 left him nine shots back of Scott. But the best what-if of all, the great drama that might have been, disintegrated when McDowell made a birdie putt on No. 17 to take the spot in the final group opposite Scott. It was perhaps the first time a positive stroke by the popular Irishman drew groans in the media center. Until that moment, it appeared that Scott would walk the final 18 in the company of Tiger Woods, who just kind of hung around Saturday with his 70, and is in fourth place alone, a shot behind McDowell and Snedeker and a
not-insurmountable five behind Scott. The drama of the Scott-Woods final group was that Scott's caddie is Steve Williams, who was on the bag for Woods for 13 of his 14 major titles and whose split with Woods, in the wake of Woods' marital blowup and disintegrating game, was not pretty. The announcement of the separation was terse, but the real ugliness exploded in, of all places, Shanghai, in November 2011. The occasion was an annual tour caddie awards party, sponsored by international bank HSBC and held in a tent adjacent to a big hotel. The evening was supposed to be fun, mostly a roast, and journalists invited to attend had to agree that the proceedings would be off the record. Three from the USA were there. One award went to Williams, a New Zealander who, as Woods' caddie, had become among the highest-paid sports figures in his country. He had been on Scott's bag when Scott won the World Golf Championships event at Firestone three months earlier. Williams had called that victory "my best ever," an obvious jab at Woods, and in his acceptance speech that night in Shanghai, he jabbed much deeper by including a racial slur. One of the U.S. journalists there
that night said that, while the acoustics in the tent were bad, "Everybody kind of stopped and was stunned." A few days later, a small group of British journalists who had not been on hand heard what happened from other caddies, and, as they were not bound by an offthe-record agreement, wrote the story. The tension, despite Williams' later apology, remains. In the quick-quote area Saturday after he finished, Woods was asked about playing in the final group not specifically about Williams. But he obviously knew the genesis of the question and the tone of his dismissal seemed to speak volumes. "Well, I'm not in it," he said. "So it is what it is." I have a severe problem with stealing everything I can in video games. As part of my natural drive to satiate my escapist needs (as theft isn't a part of my daily routine), doing what I can to steal an item in nearly every video game possible is oddly relaxing to me. Take The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening as an example. Regardless of the consequences, trying to save a few rupees by nabbing an item from the shopkeeper is the start of a behavior pattern I've recently begun noticing. I recall the first time I tried catching a trainer's Pokemon, or would meticulously check every crevice of an NPC's house in every Pokemon game in the series (when characters weren't home, I'd consider my actions as an additional crime, breaking and entering). Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even
sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in
the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-
denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what
might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Alex was an influential voice in a generation of leftists who did an enormous disservice to this country and the world at large by carrying on a political tradition and promoting a political cause that killed 100 million people in the 20 th Century in peacetime and consigned more than a billion others to immeasurable and unnecessary poverty, even starvation, by imposing on them the crackpot socialist schemes of Karl Marx and his misguided disciples. Alexs father Claud was also a noted writer and both an agent of and propagandist for Stalins bloody regime. Alex exhibited in his own person many of the worst Stalinist traits. He was personally vicious in attacking political opponents and even friends, such as Christopher
Hitchens, about whom he wrote one of the most disgusting columns I have ever read although in fairness it must be said that Christopher himself was a master of this particular form of literary abuse. On the other hand, Alex had worthy sense of humor, which even a target like myself could appreciate, and was a clever
writer though inferior as a stylist to Christopher whom he obviously envied and paid back with insults. It could be said of Alex that he was also a gutsy individual who, like Christopher, on occasion displayed independence of mind a rarity among leftists who are normally incapable of challenging the progressive herd. Alexs most
notorious deviation from orthodoxy was his refusal to support the idea that human beings are responsible for climate change, a cardinal tenet of the progressive faith. This caused the obituary writer for the Los Angeles Times,[1] which like most of our metropolitan papers has become a left-wing tabloid, to say of him his thoughts on global
warming aligned him with the far right as though matters of science should be subject to a political party line. Needless to say, the Times obit failed to mention the fact that Alex and his father were shills for Communists, or that Alex was anti-American and an anti-Semite and a cheerleader for the Islamofascists of Hizbollah, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood who are bent on destroying us. Despite the unfortunate resurgence in our time of the vile ideologies of the 1930s and 1960s to which he devoted his life, Alex was at the end a bitter and spiteful man. This was the predictable fruit of a life spent badly in recrimination and anger. The Colorado shooting suspect planned the rampage that killed 12 midnight movie-goers, including a six-year-old girl with "calculation and deliberation", police said. For months James Holmes received deliveries that authorities believe armed him for battle and were used to rig his flat with dozens of bombs. Experts were still working to clear dangerous explosive materials from inside Holmes' suburban Denver home, two days after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a cinema minutes into the premiere of Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Fifty-eight people were injured. His flat was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby-trapped to kill "whoever entered it", Aurora police chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have probably been one of his officers. "You think we're angry? We sure as hell are angry," Mr Oates said. Authorities would not discuss a motive for one of the deadliest
mass shootings in recent US history, as makeshift memorials for the victims sprang up and relatives began to publicly mourn their loved ones. Holmes, 24, had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate programme in neuroscience and neighbours and former classmates in California have said he was an intelligent loner who said little. But he had apparently prepared the attack at the Aurora multiplex cinema well in advance, receiving deliveries by post to his home and school for four months and buying thousands of rounds of ammunition on the internet, Mr Oates said. "He had a high volume of deliveries to both his work and home address. We think this explains how he got his hands on the magazine, ammunition," he said, as well as the rigged explosives in his flat. "What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation," Mr Oates added. Mr Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting cinema-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within
the last two months and recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet. Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over 300 dollars (192) on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company. It was not known why the suspect chose a cinema to stage the assault, or whether he intended some twisted, symbolic link to the film's violent scenes. Holmes is in solitary confinement for his protection at a county detention facility on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He is due in court for an initial hearing on Monday and had been appointed a lawyer, authorities said. Or did he or she simply think this was a duty, given that the president had declared Mr. VanderSloot and fellow donors less than reputable? Despite living an exemplary life and keeping all of your affairs in order and legal to the best of your abilities, because the laws are so outrageously complex and of such breadth and volume that it is impossible to know them and thus adhere to them, everyone who has any arrangement beyond the most simple can likely be found, upon thorough investigation, to be in
violation of something. For this reason, getting audited can be problematic, despite honest attempts to stay compliant. Thus, people rightly fear being singled out and becoming an audit target.
