"As you may be aware, Rupert resigned from a number of UK boards, including News Group Newspapers and Times Newspapers Limited, some time ago. He has also stepped down from more than a dozen boards of companies with interests in the U.S., Australia and India." Mockridge said Murdoch remained fully committed to the business as chairman of what would become the largest newspaper and digital publishing group in the world. Speculation had risen in the last year that News Corp could seek to

sell the British papers, following pressure from shareholders over a scandal that also forced the group to cancel its planned acquisition of the whole of the lucrative payTV group BSkyB, which would have been the biggest deal in News Corp's history. The announcement in June to split the business was seen as a clear signal that the group was distancing itself from its newspaper roots. Evidence shows months of plotting ahead of Colorado shooting: police

By Chris Francescani and Mary Slosson AURORA, Colo.| Sat Jul 21, 2012 11:51pm EDT (Reuters) - Deliveries received by the man accused of committing a movie house massacre at a Denver-area premiere of the new "Batman" film suggest months of "calculation and deliberation" leading up to the shooting rampage that killed 12 people, police said on Saturday. Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates discussed the shipments as local and federal authorities completed the painstaking process of disarming suspect James Holmes' apartment, which was found booby-trapped with explosive devices after the shooting at a multiplex theater several miles away. On Saturday, the local coroner's officer released the names of the 12 people killed. As evening fell, residents gathered at a local high school to mourn the passing of a classmate who graduated in May. "We've become aware that the suspect over the last four months received a high volume of deliveries to both his work and home addresses," Oates said. "This begins to explain how he got his hands on all the magazines

and ammunition. "We also think it begins to explain some of the materials he had in his apartment," Oates said. "What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation." A gunman wearing a full suit of tactical body armor, helmet and gas mask opened fire at a packed midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" early on Friday morning, killing 12 people and wounding 58. Holmes, 24, was arrested minutes later in a parking lot behind the cinema. Among the dead were a 6-yearold girl who had just learned to swim, a young man celebrating his 27th birthday and an aspiring sportscaster who missed by minutes being on the scene of a Toronto mall shooting earlier this summer. The mass shooting stunned the nation, evoking memories of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, 17 miles from Aurora, where two students opened fire and killed 12 students and a teacher. It also reverberated in the U.S. presidential race. Both President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, toned down their campaigns on Friday, pulled ads from Colorado and dedicated scheduled events to the victims.

Obama was scheduled to travel to Colorado on Sunday to honor the shooting victims, an administration official said. 'THE JOKER' Those who witnessed the shooting told of a horrific scene, with dazed victims bleeding from bullet wounds, spitting up blood and crying for help. "I slipped on some blood and landed on a lady. I shook her and said, 'We need to go; get up,' and there was no response, so I presumed she was dead," said Tanner Coon, 17. When police arrested Holmes, he was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a Glock .40-caliber handgun, Oates said. Police found an additional Glock .40-caliber handgun in his car, parked just outside the theater's rear emergency exit, he said. Police said Holmes had purchased the weapons legally at three area gun stores in the last 60 days and bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition online, including a 100-round drum magazine for an assault rifle. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said the suspect was being held in solitary confinement to protect him from other prisoners, a routine move in high-profile cases. Holmes, who authorities said had

dyed his hair red and called himself "the Joker" in a reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was due to make an initial court appearance on Monday. Little has surfaced from Holmes's past to suggest he was capable of such violence. Until last month, he was studying for a doctoral degree in neuroscience at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical School, a few blocks from his apartment. A top student, he had earned a prestigious federal grant from the National Institutes for Health to support his studies. The grants are intended for "outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology," university spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said. Holmes had spent a year in the doctoral program, where a fellow student described him as quiet and studious, before he abruptly withdrew from the university last month. He gave no reason for his departure. Holmes kept a low profile off campus as well. He was not active under his own name on social media sites like Facebook and both the landlord and fellow tenants of his red-brick apartment building said they knew little about him.

SLAIN STUDENT REMEMBERED Neighbors who met him in the local bar described him as relaxed and friendly, though a few recalled him displaying brief flashes of anger over seemingly trivial exchanges. The University of Colorado Hospital, which treated some of the shooting victims, said 10 people had been released and five remained in critical condition. The Medical Center of Aurora said four of its seven patients remained in the intensive care unit, while three others were on the main trauma floor. A memorial of flowers, candles and stuffed animals quickly sprung up where the shooting rampage took place. A handwritten sign read: "7/20 gone not forgotten." At the Saturday evening memorial service at Gateway High School, shooting victim and recent graduate A.J. Boik was remembered as beloved former student and talented artist who was bound for college in the fall. "He was a very big part of this community," said Tami Avery, whose son played sports with Boik. "He will be dearly missed." Syrian forces fight rebels in Damascus, residents flee

(Reuters: Top News)

By Dominic Evans and Khaled Yacoub Oweis BEIRUT/AMMAN| Sat Jul 21, 2012 6:53pm EDT (Reuters) - Syrian troops backed by helicopters and tanks have struck back in Damascus against rebel fighters emboldened by a bomb attack against President Bashar al-Assad's inner circle. Assad's forces, who also pushed into a rebel-held district in the northerly commercial hub of Aleppo on Saturday, targeted pockets of lightly armed rebels, who moved about the streets on foot and attacked security installations and roadblocks. Residents said the sound of shelling in the capital was so intense at dusk that they were unable to distinguish it from the traditional cannon blast marking the end of the daily fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Opposition activists said helicopters fired rockets into a neighborhood near the southerly Sayida Zeinab district, causing dozens of casualties. They did not have any other details. "In Damascus, people continue to search desperately for safety," the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement in Geneva.

"Humanitarian needs are growing as the situation in the city worsens and as large numbers of people flee their neighborhoods in search of safe haven. The ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have intensified their response to the situation." The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group that monitors the violence, said 140 people, including 43 troops, had been killed across Syria on Saturday. Most of them died in the province of Homs, epicenter of the uprising. One Western diplomat who declined to be named said Assad was moving troops to protect his capital and compared him to a doctor "abandoning the patient's limbs to save the organs". Most shops were closed and there was only light traffic - although more than in the past few days. Some police checkpoints, abandoned earlier in the week, were manned again. Many petrol stations were closed, having run out of fuel, and those that were open had huge lines of cars waiting to fill up. Residents reported long queues at bakeries. The army's push in the capital occurred after rebels assassinated four of Assad's top security officials last week as part of a sixday attack in the capital that they dubbed "Damascus Volcano".

Rebels also captured three border crossings with Iraq and Turkey, and on Saturday an Iraqi security source said gunmen appeared to be taking over a fourth at Yarubiya in Syria's Kurdish northeast. NO COMMENT FROM ASSAD Assad, battling a 16-month-old uprising against his family's four decades of autocratic rule, has not spoken in public since the assassinations, and failed to attend funeral ceremonies for his brother -in-law and two other slain officials on Friday. A bloody crackdown on what began as a peaceful revolt has increasingly become an armed conflict between an establishment dominated by Assad's Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and rebels drawn largely from the Sunni majority. U.N. Secretary General Ban Kimoon said he was sending his peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous and top military adviser General Babacar Gaye to Syria to assess the situation. Opposition activists in Aleppo, Syria's biggest city, said hundreds of families were fleeing residential areas on Saturday after the military swept into the Saladin district, which had been in rebel hands for two days. Fighting was also reported in the densely-populated, poor

neighborhood of al-Sakhour. "The sound of bombardment has been non-stop since last night. For the first time we feel Aleppo has turned into a battle zone," a housewife, who declined to be named, said by phone from the city. REBEL BORDER CROSSING RAID On the Iraqi-Syrian border, a security source and a separate witness said they saw gunmen in a civilian car enter the Yarubiya crossing point on the Syrian side of the frontier. "When we contacted the Syrians there, they told us the Syrian security elements are gradually withdrawing from the place," said the security source, who works for the Iraqi customs department. It was not immediately possible to verify the reports on the border post, but Syrian opposition activists said several towns in Syria's Kurdish northeast had passed - without a fight - into local hands in recent days as central authority eroded. The surge in violence has trapped millions of Syrians, turned sections of Damascus into ghost areas, and sent tens of thousands of refugees fleeing to neighboring Lebanon. The U.N. Security Council has approved a 30-day extension for a ceasefire observer mission, but

Ban has recommended changing its focus to pursuing prospects for a political solution - effectively accepting there is no truce to monitor. Diplomats said only half of the 300 unarmed observers would be needed for Ban's suggested plan, and several monitors were seen departing from Damascus on Saturday. Speaking two days after Russia and China vetoed a resolution to impose U.N. sanctions on Assad's government, Ban called on the Security Council to "redouble efforts to forge a united way forward and exercise its collective responsibility". "The Syrian government has manifestly failed to protect civilians and the international community has collective responsibility to live up to the U.N. Charter and act on its principles," he said. Regional and Western powers have voiced concern the conflict might become a full-blown sectarian war that could spill across borders. But Assad's opponents remain outgunned and divided. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, speaking after contacts with the head of the Arab League and Qatar's prime minister, said SYRIAN page 7

about his death. On 18 July, state media reported that Gen Shawkat had been killed in a suicide bomb attack at the headquarters of the National Security Bureau. Daoud Rajiha, defence minister Gen Daoud Rajiha was appointed defence minister in August 2011, and remained in the post after a cabinet reshuffle in June. The US and EU imposed sanctions on Gen Rajiha in May, accusing him of responsibility for repression The 65 year old had previously served as chief of staff of the armed forces for seven years. He was promoted to the rank of general in 2005. He specialised in artillery at the Syrian military academy, from which he graduated in 1967. It is believed Gen Rajiha was a Greek Orthodox Christian, a rarity in the Syrian military and government, which is dominated by the Alawite sect of President Bashar al-Assad. In March 2012, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on Gen Rajiha for his role in the repression of dissent in Syria. The EU also added him to its list of designated officials, saying he was responsible for the military's

involvement in the crackdown on protesters. Hassan Turkomani, assistant to the vice-president Gen Hassan Turkomani was appointed assistant to the vicepresident - with the rank of minister - in 2009. He was also said to been made a special envoy of President Assad. Gen Hassan Turkomani: Long-standing senior member of ruling Baath Party Born in 1935, Mr Turkomani joined the army in the 1950s. He fought against Israel and in Lebanon, before being made a general in the 1980s and military chief of staff in 2002. His appointment as defence minister in 2004 - replacing Mustafa Tlas, who had been in that position for 32 years - went against speculation that the next postholder would be a civilian. A Sunni Muslim unlike many in the Syrian elite, Gen Turkomani was also a long-standing senior member of the ruling Baath Party, serving on its Regional Command and Central Committee. Activists say that after protests erupted against President Assad in 2011, Gen Turkomani was appointed head of the security forces' crisis management office, which is based at the National

Security Bureau's headquarters in Damascus. In August, the EU imposed sanctions on the general as it targeted senior government officials. Hisham Ikhtiar, director of the National Security Bureau (NSB) Born in 1941, Gen Ikhtiar was the head of the Baath Party Regional Command's National Security Bureau (NSB), which coordinates the work of Syria's intelligence agencies and formulates recommendations for the president. Between 2001 and 2005, he was in charge of the General Security Directorate (GSD). Gen Hisham Ikhtiar was a leading Baath Party figure and head of the National Security Bureau In 2006, the US imposed financial sanctions on Gen Ikhtiar for "significantly contributing to the Syrian government's support for designated terrorist organisations", including Hezbollah. While at the GSD, Gen Ikhtiar directed activities that "significantly contributed to the Syrian government's military and security presence in Lebanon", it said. In 2007, he was included on a list of Syrians forbidden to enter US soil.

Gen Ikhtiar was reportedly charged with quelling the initial pro-democracy protests in Deraa. The brutal crackdown launched by the security services in the southern city helped trigger the recent nationwide unrest. In May 2011, the US treasury department imposed sanctions on the National Security Bureau, saying it had directed Syrian security forces to use extreme force against demonstrators. The EU and US later imposed individual sanctions on Gen Ikhtiar, with the latter saying he had directed security forces to "use extreme force against demonstrators". all three agreed that it was time for Syria's fractured opposition to prepare to take charge of the country. "We would like to see the rapid formation of a provisional government representing the

where they found booby traps that prevented investigators from entering for two days and forced officials to evacuate the apartment complex and five nearby buildings. Sources familiar with the investigation said that some 30 shells filled with gunpowder were spread through the 800-squarefoot apartment and wired to a control box in the kitchen. There were also at least two containers filled with "incendiary liquids" intended to fuel a fire from the initial explosions, and an undetermined amount of bullets meant to ricochet around the apartment. "Given the amount of explosives that were there, if they detonated ideally, you would have had a

very ample explosion with an ensuing thermal effect from the incendiary liquids that would have destroyed that apartment complex," a law enforcement official said. Local and federal bomb experts used a remote-controlled robot to disable two trip wires, then detonated a tube known as a "water shot" to disable the control box. By Saturday afternoon, police had removed the last of the devices, packed them in sand in a dump truck and drove them away. Authorities said they were working carefully to preserve any evidence in the apartment, which could shed light on the motives for a crime that stunned Aurora and much of the nation "This apartment was designed to

kill whoever entered it," Oates said. where they found booby traps that prevented investigators from entering for two days and forced officials to evacuate the apartment complex and five nearby buildings. Sources familiar with the investigation said that some 30 shells filled with gunpowder were spread through the 800-squarefoot apartment and wired to a control box in the kitchen. There were also at least two containers filled with "incendiary liquids" intended to fuel a fire from the initial explosions, and an undetermined amount of bullets [unable to retrieve full-text

meant to ricochet around the apartment. "Given the amount of explosives that were there, if they detonated ideally, you would have had a very ample explosion with an ensuing thermal effect from the incendiary liquids that would have destroyed that apartment complex," a law enforcement official said. police had removed the last of the devices, packed them in sand in a dump truck and drove them away. Authorities said they were working carefully to preserve any evidence in the apartment, which could shed light on the motives for a crime that stunned Aurora and much of the nation "This apartment was designed to kill whoever entered it," Oates said. Gunman's Explosives Trap Defused

(FOXNews.com)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 10:05:44 PM

Bomb units disarm explosives inside shooting suspects home Witness describes scene at movie theater shooting History of violence All explosives have been eliminated in the booby-trapped apartment of the suspect in a deadly shooting spree at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, and no authorities were injured in the process. The suspect, James Holmes is accused of going on a shooting rampage at the movie theater during Friday's midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." He was packing as many as 6,000 rounds of ammunition with the ability to shoot up to 50 a minute, police said. Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson says the booby trap trip wire at his apartment was "meant to kill," the first person who opened the door to the apartment. The Aurora police chief says the trap was meant specifically to kill a police officer who might have opened the door. "We sure as hell are angry," Chief Dan Oates said about the trap being aimed at officers. Oates also tried to head off a mental incompetence defense by saying

Holmes was deliberate and calculating in receiving numerous commercial deliveries to his home and workplaces over the past four months. "This is some serious stuff that our team is dealing with," Sgt. Carlson said. Witnesses have reported hearing two small booms during the disarming process. Holmes' apartment was loaded with explosives and authorities say they will not know for sure

what is inside until they enter and test results come back from an FBI lab. A robot was sent in to disarm and diffuse the major threats as well as remove evidence. Initial attempts to enter the apartment Friday were unsuccessful. The FBI, ATF and local authorities are working together to enter the apartment. "There are still unknowns, we're not exactly sure of everything

that's in there" Sgt. Carlson said. The unknown includes jars that are believed to contain accelerates. Authorities say there are balloons filled with gun powder and bullets littered throughout the floor. The first phase, which according to officials was successful, was to render the area safe and address the immediate threat of the wire trip booby trap. The public had been warned that parts of these

phases may cause loud booms and have planned for reverse 911 calls for the area so that the public may remain informed. The second phase will be to dispose of the aerial shells which will include placing the devices into sand trucks and taken to a disposal site for a controlled detonation. Authorities believe there may be up to as many as 30 GUNMAN'S page 13

shells. The third phase will be the investigation of the apartment itself. "There is no timeline, there is no end time, Sgt. Carlson said. "We don't need to rush anything," she said. Authorities said Saturday that they hope to begin allowing residents back into their homes by Sunday. They also said they hope to finish with the investigation at the movie theater by Monday, with the goal of handing the theater back to the owners by Wednesday. Relatives of two of the twelve dead confirmed late Friday that their loved ones were killed during the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." The family of Alex Sullivan issued a statement confirming his death. He died on his 27th birthday. Twenty-three-year-old Micayla Medek was also among the dead. Her father's cousin, Anita Busch, says the sad news at least brought peace to the family. The brother of Jessica Ghawi previously confirmed his sister's death. "He looked like an assassin ready to go to war," said Jordan Crofter, a moviegoer who was unhurt in the attack early Friday, about a half-hour after the special midnight opening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Holmes, used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, stopping only to reload.

The suspect marched up the aisle in the stadium-style theater, picking off those who tried to flee, witnesses said. Authorities said he hit scores of people, with a few of the 70 victims suffering their injuries not by gunfire but in the ensuing chaos. At least one person was struck in an adjacent theater by gunfire that went through the wall. "He would reload and shoot and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed," said Jennifer Seeger, adding that bullet casings landed on her head and burned her forehead. Within minutes, frantic emergency services calls brought some 200 police officers, ambulances and emergency crews to the theater. Holmes was captured in the parking lot and remains in police custody. Police said they later found that his nearby apartment was boobytrapped. Authorities gave no motive for the attack. The FBI said there was no indication of ties to any terrorist groups. In New York City, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said: "It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He has his hair painted red. He said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman." It was the worst mass shooting in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

It was the deadliest in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre in suburban Denver in 1999, when two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves. The latest shooting rocked this sprawling suburb of 325,000 east of Denver. A makeshift memorial with 12 candles in a row and piles of flowers sat at a corner near the entrance to the movie theater parking lot. Up the hill from there, about 20 pastors led an emotional vigil for about 350 people, some hugging and crying At an emotional afternoon news conference, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said the people would rise above the spasm of violence, and ultimately not be "defined" by the tragedy. The new Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. The plot has the villain Bane facing Bale's Caped Crusader with a nuclear weapon that could destroy all of fictional Gotham. The shooting prompted officials to cancel the red-carpet premiere in Paris, and some U.S. movie theaters stepped up security for daytime showings. The film's director, Christopher Nolan, issued a statement on behalf of the cast and crew, expressing their "profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy." "Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our

thoughts are with them and their families," Nolan said. "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them." actor Christian Bales said in a statement. The attack began shortly after midnight at the multiplex in Aurora. Audience members said they thought it was part of the movie, or some kind of stunt associated with it. The film has several scenes of public mayhem -- a hallmark of superhero movies. In one scene, Bane leads an attack on a stock exchange, and in another he leads a shooting and bombing rampage on a packed football stadium. A federal law enforcement official said Holmes bought a ticket to the show, went into the theater as part of the crowd and propped open an exit door as the movie was playing. The suspect then donned protective ballistic gear and opened fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. At some point, the gunman appeared to have stepped outside because several witnesses saw him come through the door. "All I saw is the door swinging open and the street lights behind, and you could see a silhouette," said Crofter, who was sitting on the left side of the theater and toward the front. Sylvana Guillen said the gunman, clad in dark clothing, appeared at

the front of the theater as the character Catwoman appeared in the movie. Then they heard gunshots and smelled smoke from a canister he was carrying. As she and her friend, Misha Mostashiry, ran to the exit, Guillen said, they saw a man slip in the blood of a wounded woman he was trying to help. Oates said the gunman wore a gas mask and a ballistic helmet and vest, as well as leg, groin and throat protectors. He said he bought four guns from local gun shops in the last 60 days and 6,000 rounds of ammunition, including a drum magazine that could fire 50 to 60 rounds per minute. "My understanding is that all the weapons that he possessed, he possessed legally. And all the clips that he possessed, he possessed legally. And all the ammunition that he possessed, he possessed legally," Oates said at a press conference Friday. Seeger said she thought it was showmanship. "I didn't think it was real," Seeger said. She said she was in the second row, about four feet from the gunman, when he pointed a gun at her face. "I was just a deer in headlights. I didn't know what to do," she said. Then she ducked to the ground as the gunman shot people seated behind her. Seeger said she began crawling toward an exit when she saw a girl of about 14 "lying lifeless on GUNMAN'S page 18

Evidence shows months of plotting ahead of Colorado shooting: police

(Reuters: Top News)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 10:53:12 PM

Submitted at 7/21/2012 5:53:29 PM

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, speaking after contacts with the head of the Arab League and Qatar's prime minister, said SYRIAN page 18

to strategic allies such as Israel and Taiwan, one insider explained. It says states shall not authorize arms transfers unless they take account of certain issues, but the U.S. took the view that [the criteria] was incompatible with the current U.S. export control system, this insider explained. Despite the U.S. objections, the source told FoxNews.com: Momentum overall is still very strong for getting a treaty. To meet the deadline, emergency sessions have been arranged for this weekend even though translators may not be on hand. The U.S. mission to the UN did not respond to a request for comment on the latest turns in the talks, which are taking place in New York. UN resistance to exempting civilian arms from the treaty is linked to the fact that few of the world bodys 193 member states provide their citizens with a constitutional right to bear arms. The U.S. opposition to arms transfer restrictions, meanwhile, marks a clear acknowledgement on the part of the Obama administration that the treaty, as it stands, risks straitjacketing U.S. foreign policy.

Indeed, such wording applied historically might have constrained the Reagan Doctrine, which allowed for giving overt and covert aid to anti-communist resistance movements during the ultimately successful Cold War confrontation against the Soviet Union. In discussing other ways the draft treaty has evolved, the source close to the talks said there is now some momentum towards exempting ammunition from the treaty. This would meet a key U.S. and gun lobby demand. There may now also be no reporting requirements for small arms and light weapons sales. But the U.S. Friday did not oppose the draft treatys call for proscription of arms transfers that prolong international instability, the source confided. With the word instability serving as UN code for war, this provision could arguably help aggressors who strike first to hold onto their gains, some analysts will argue. Thats because states would not be able to help the losing side by arming it. Nursing Home Wants Probe After Union Walkout

(FOXNews.com)

FILE: July 11, 2012: Conn. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman with striking nursing home workers at a facility in Newington, Conn. AP The owner of several Connecticut nursing homes is calling for a criminal probe after union workers staged a mass walkout earlier this month, allegedly vandalizing and sabotaging the health care facilities in the process. Among the allegations is that the workers, supposedly disgruntled over protracted labor talks, switched around the IDs of Alzheimer's patients. The alleged sabotage, which also purportedly included tampering with medication records and removing patient identification bands, occurred in three of the companys five Connecticut facilities in the overnight hours before the July 3 strike, according to police reports and the complaint HealthBridge Management filed Thursday with the Chief State's Attorney office. Company officials suspect the acts were committed by some of the employees who went on strike. Those employees are represented by a chapter of the

Service Employees International Union, the largest healthcare union in North America with roughly 1.1 million members. Its especially heinous to do it to somebody with Alzheimers, said a HealthBridge spokesman, adding that dietary information also was compromised. He said the acts put patients' lives at risk

and if somebody had a medical emergency in that window "they could have been in grave peril." In the formal complaint, company executives also point out similar incidents reportedly occurred in 2001 at several nursing homes involved in labor negotiations with the chapter, New England Heath Care

Employees Union District 1199. These (recent) incidents posed a serious risk of harm to HealthBridge residents, the complaint states. Based on the timing of the recent HealthBridge incidents and the striking similarities between those incidents and the illegal conduct uncovered in the 2001

investigation, HealthBridge believes that these actions are linked to the strike and that the perpetrators could have been connected with the union. Top Connecticut Democratic lawmakers including Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Gov. Dannel Malloy NURSING page 20

the stairs." She saw a man with a bullet wound in his back and tried to check his pulse, but "I had to go. I was going to get shot." Later, police began entering the theater, asking people to hold their hands up as they evacuated the building. Some of the victims were treated for chemical exposure apparently related to canisters thrown by the gunman. Those hurt included a 4month-old baby, who was treated at a hospital and released. Authorities started to remove the bodies from the theater on Friday afternoon. Officials wheeled a black bag on a stretcher out of the front entrance, placing it in the back of a minivan. Ten people died in the theater, while two others died from their injuries later. Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban neighborhood in San Diego. Holmes played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college. On Friday morning, police escorted Holmes' father, a manager of a software company, from their home while his mother, a nurse, stayed inside, receiving visitors who came to offer

support. Holmes also has a younger sister. "As you can understand, the Holmes family is very upset about all of this," Lt. Andra Brown, the San Diego police spokeswoman, told reporters in the driveway of the family home. "It's a tragic event and it's taken everyone by surprise. They are definitely trying to work through this." Police released a statement from his family that said: "Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved." There have been no indications so far that Holmes had any run-ins with the law before Friday. Tom Mai, a retired electrical engineer, said Holmes was a "shy guy" who came from a "very, very nice family." Holmes graduated from University of California, Riverside, in the spring of 2010 a bachelor's degree in neuroscience, a school spokesman said. Mai said the mother told him Holmes couldn't find a job after earning a master's degree and returned to school. He enrolled in the Ph.D. neuroscience program at the University of Colorado-Denver in June 2011 but left the program last month, according to the university. Holmes lived in an apartment in

Aurora, and FBI agents and police who went there discovered it was booby-trapped when they used a camera at the end of a 12-foot pole to look inside. Authorities evacuated surrounding residences, and about two dozen people headed to a shelter set up by the Red Cross at a local school. Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a county detention facility Saturday, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He was set for an initial hearing on Monday and had been appointed a public defender, authorities said. The Associated Press contributed to this report. all three agreed that it was time for Syria's fractured opposition to prepare to take charge of the country. "We would like to see the rapid formation of a provisional government representing the diversity of Syrian society," said Fabius. Syria's main political opposition group, the Syrian National Council, operating in exile, has so far failed to unite Assad's disparate foes on a united political platform. Mockridge said Murdoch remained fully committed to the business as chairman of what would become the largest newspaper and digital publishing group in the world. Speculation had risen in the last year that News Corp could seek to sell the British papers, following pressure from shareholders over a scandal that also forced the group to cancel its planned acquisition of the whole of the lucrative payTV group BSkyB, which would have been the biggest deal in News Corp's history. The announcement in June to split the business was seen as a clear signal that the group was distancing itself from its newspaper roots. where they found booby traps that prevented investigators from entering for two days and forced officials to evacuate the apartment complex and five nearby buildings. "Given the amount of explosives that were there, if they detonated ideally, you would have had a very ample explosion with an ensuing thermal effect from the incendiary liquids that would have destroyed that apartment complex," a law enforcement official said. Local and federal bomb experts used a remote-controlled robot to disable two trip wires, then detonated a tube known as a "water shot" to disable the control

box. By Saturday afternoon, police had removed the last of the devices, packed them in sand in a dump truck and drove them away. Authorities said they were working carefully to preserve any evidence in the apartment, which could shed light on the motives for a crime that stunned Aurora and much of the nation "This apartment was designed to kill whoever entered it," Oates said. and Attorney General George Jepsen have throw their support behind the union in the protracted labor talks, with Malloy and Jepsen joining picket lines. Company executives said Jepsen originally rejected their request for an investigation, saying they should instead call the local police. Jepsen has since recused himself from the investigation, his office confirmed Friday with FoxNews.com. The complaint has been filed with Chief States Attorney Kevin T. Kane. Pinpointing the individuals involved is unlikely because the facilities do not have video cameras, in part because they would violate federal patientprivacy laws. The sides are deadlocked in a roughly 18-month contract dispute involving such issues as pay, medical insurance and retirement plans. HealthBridge argues that cuts were necessary as a result of a very difficult economic situation that includes increased competition in senior care and big

cuts in Medicare. The company in April made its so-called last, best, final offer. Organizers for the local union chapter have said the workers voted in June to strike because HealthBridge acted unlawfully by ending negotiations and implementing the final offer. They said changes will result in at least 500 employees, including nurses and medical technicians, losing roughly $10,000 annually over the next six years. By their outrageous, inhumane and unlawful actions, HealthBridge has given workers no other alternative, chapter President David Pickus said after the vote. This is yet another instance of the wealthy 1 percent waging war on the 99 percent of us who work for a living. The union did not return requests Saturday to discuss the alleged vandalism and sabotage incidents but has reportedly said members are not involved. The HealthBridge facilities offer rehabilitation services, in addition to long-term care for seniors. The

company also alleges several other incidents in the complaint, including that equipment such as stethoscopes and wheelchair lifts were hidden. Weekly Wrap-Up: There's a New Evening Edition, the Mac Retina Display Disagreement and Twitter's Credibility Problem

Published last month in Communication Quarterly, the research by Mike Schmierbach and Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch used two experiments to show that a New York Times story posted on the website was seen by respondents as more credible than when the same story was posted on the newspapers Twitter feed. Ubisoft: Desmonds Assassins Creed days are numbered

Eric Abent (SlashGear)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 7:04:31 PM

Weve seen quite a few Assassins Creed releases since the first one hit shelves back in 2007, and even though weve met a lot of different characters along the way, one thing has remained the same: modern-day assassin Desmond Miles is constantly featured throughout the series. That may not be the case for much longer, however, as Assassins Creed 3 creative lead Alex Hutchinson tells Polygon that the Desmond story line has to wrap up sooner or later, presumably with the series continuing after Desmonds tale has come to an end. According to Hutchinson, the Assassins Creed series risks losing resonance with fans if Desmonds overarcing story line continues on for too much longer. I think Desmond needs to end, Hutchinson said. At some point. You know what I mean? Things that go on too long lack resonance. Were asking people to remember seven years worth of

story. Which is like saying you were in junior high and now youre finishing college. And you need to remember what you were doing in junior high. Hutchinson compared Desmonds part in the Assassins Creed universe to Rod Sterlings role introducing each episode of The Twilight Zone, saying despite the fact that each episode had its own unique story, Sterling was

there at the beginning of each one. Therefore, Desmond and Sterling both kind of serve as the one constant in an otherwise alwayschanging universe. If youve seen any screenshots or trailers for Assassins Creed 3, then you know its a pretty radical departure from the rest of the series. Hutchinson says that its 90% a new game and, were it not for the continuation of

Desmonds story, Ubisoftcould have called it anything else, and people would have said okay. Assassins Creed 3 wont be the only title in the series to step into uncharted territory, as the PS Vitas upcoming Assassins Creed 3: Liberation doesnt even feature Desmond at all. It looks like Desmonds last hurrah may be coming up sooner rather than later folks, so get in some quality time

with the character while you still can. Microsoft talks Windows 8 app pricing, free trials

Eric Abent (SlashGear)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 8:24:21 PM

Now that we have a release date for Windows 8, its time to get down to the nitty-gritty and talk about apps. All of the apps weve seen for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview have been free, but obviously, that wont be the case when the full version of Windows 8 becomes available. Even though well surely see a ton of free apps available on the Windows Store, developers will have the option of setting prices for their apps as well. Microsoft has detailed the pricing scheme it will eventually use for the Windows Store, saying in a post on the MSDN Blog that app prices can range from $1.49 all the way up to $999.99. In an apparent attempt to make the Windows Store stand out from all the other app stores, developers wont have the option of pricing their apps at $0.99, so dont count on having a seemingly endless supply of dollar deals to browse

through on the Windows Store. The company also says that it will support successful apps by only taking a 20% fee on apps that generate $25,000 or more in sales. Until apps reach that $25,000 milestone, however, Microsoft will be taking an industry-standard cut of 30%. Additionally, Microsoft is taking a try before you buy approach

to the Windows Store, letting developers offer a free trial period for their apps. A trial lasts for seven days, and naturally gives users the option of backing out of a full purchase should they decide they dont like the app during the trial window. Microsoft is making some smart decisions with the Windows Store. The 20% fee on successful

apps will likely have developers giving the Windows Store priority in some cases, and giving users access to a free trial before buying could potentially lead to more downloads (and, by extension, more purchases). Well see if Microsofts plan for the Windows Store works out when Windows 8 launches on October 26. Story Timeline

Legendarily horrible film "MANOS" gets its own iOS game

Kodak suffers blow as patent in Apple, RIM case is ruled invalid

Edward Moyer (CNET News)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 6:45:22 PM

There are few movies that are as bad as the 1966 horror film MANOS: The Hands of Fate, which sits very near the bottom of IMDB's ratings list. I can think of a few almost as bad, like Robot Monster(guy in gorilla suit wearing a space helmet), Hercules Against the Moon Men(sciencefiction and Greek myth combining the worst elements of both), and maybe Santa Claus Conquers the Martians(Martians kidnap Santa so Mars kids can have Christmas). Certainly, though, MANOS is a stunner. Without going too deeply into the plot, it's about a vacationing family who happen upon a cult in the Texas desert. The film was shot in less than 3 months for $19,000 and directed by an insurance salesman. The handheld camera being used could only shoot in 32 second spurts, so the editing is, shall we say, a bit choppy. Chunks of plot are unconnected, the night shots are plagued with moths, and one character (Torgo) may be a satyr.

MANOS would have probably remained unknown and unmourned except for the thorough mocking it received as the source film for an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. After Joel and the bots suffered through the screening, both Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank admitted that this experiment was too horrible even for their evil scheming ways. After that, MANOS reemerged as a cult "classic" despite its nearunwatchability. If you can't get enough MANOS, then you're in luck; there's a shiny new iPhone game based on the film. Mashable notes today that the game is coming to your iOS device from FreakZone games in the UK. It's built in the style of an old NES 8-bit side scroller, and it will be unleashed July 26.

Apparently the game is not completely pure MANOS; there are bits and monsters thrown in from other bad movies, and the soundtrack is made of themes from MANOS. If the game does well, you guessed it, more bad movies will be used for sequels. If you're a MANOS: Hands of Fate cultie, or even if you're not, the game should be worth a few plays. If you haven't seen the actual movie, frankly, I advise caution. If you really need to see this bomb and have some fun, MANOS will be screening nationwide via satellite in August as a special one-night event with live commentary from the RiffTrax(ex- MST3K cast) guys. The game trailer is below. Beware the Master! Legendarily horrible film "MANOS" gets its own iOS game originally appeared on TUAW The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Sat, 21 Jul 2012 20:45:00 EST. The International Trade Commission has upheld a ruling that a Kodak patent in an infringement case against Apple and Research In Motion is invalid -- undermining the iconic photography company's efforts to save itself by selling its patent portfolio. The ITC dismissed the Kodak complaint late Friday, upholding a preliminary ruling made May 21 by ITC administrative law judge Thomas Pender. Kodak, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January, has been hoping to raise billions of dollars by selling its 1,100 patents at auction. The patent in the Apple and RIM case covers the previewing of images and was thought to be one

of the most attractive to potential buyers. It had already proved to be the most lucrative in terms of licensing fees, The Wall Street Journal reports. The case isn't necessarily over, however. Kodak said it would appeal the ITC's ruling, noting that the validity of the patent had been upheld before, according to the Journal, which added that RIM welcomed the decision and that Apple wasn't immediately available for comment. Now Kotobukiya is doing lightsaber chopsticks right by embedding LEDs into the foodgathering gadgets. Now you can look forward to bathing your sashimi in the warm red or blue glow of a miniature lightsaber. Your chow mein won't stand a chance against the awesome power of these bad boys, available in Darth Vader red and Luke

Skywalker blue variants. Buy both sets and reenact your favorite battle scenes with every bite. Just be sure to not make your lightsaber whooomping noises with your mouth full. Economic Countdown To The Olympics 4: Would The Euro Be A Winning Team?

Tyler Durden
Submitted at 7/21/2012 6:06:51 PM

With just a few days left until the pre-opening soccer games begin in the UK, we continue our five part series ( Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) on the intersection between markets and the Olympics by considering whether an integrated Europe would have performed relatively better- i.e. would 2+2>4 - and what are the factors. Goldman's analysis of the pros and cons of 'integrating' their Olympic teams is extremely apropos the current deteriorating (yet desperately dreaming of improving) coordination of these 17 disparate nations. The answer, of course, is that there are some benefits from this medal 'integration' in specific cases but since German reunification, their medal performance has deteriorated - even in the team events where aggregating talent pools should have its greatest gains. In a 'zero-sum' context such as competing for Olympic medals, Germany's gains must come at the expense of other countries- and rather notably there are few French medal winners before or after an 'integration. Sounds familiar? Goldman Sachs: Would the Euro area Make a Medal-Winning Olympic Team?

entrants with, on average, less likelihood of taking gold. Allowing high class athletes to specialise in their best event in the knowledge that others of a similar standard will focus on other events can improve their performance and thus the overall medal return. Wir sind jetzt die Nummer 1 in der Welt Jetzt kommen die Spieler aus Ostdeutschland noch dazu. Es tut mir leid fr den Rest der Welt, aber wir werden in den nchsten Jahren nicht zu besiegen sein. (trans.)We are already the best team in the world, and now we are going to add the top players from East Germany. It is a pity for everyone else, but we will be unbeatable for the foreseeable future. Franz Beckenbauer, speaking at the press conference following the 1990 World Cup final. In 1990, Germany was reunified (under Chancellor Helmut Kohl) and won the World Cup (under the management of Beckenbauer). A Unified Approach to the Olympics? If the Olympic teams of Euro area countries were to unify in the manner of their monetary policies, what impact would this have on their Olympic medal-winning performance? Applying the logic of Franz Beckenbauer to the Euro area would suggest a significant improvement. If, as Beckenbauer expected, a united Germany would outperform the two separate Germanies, an Olympic team combining the sporting prowess of 17 Euro area countries should excel. At a minimum, on the basis of Beckenbauers logic, one would expect a combined Euro area team to win more medals than the sum of those won by teams from its constituent individual parts. Integration: Pros and Cons But there is an important caveat here. While combining forces will improve the quality of a team by widening and deepening the pool of talent from which selection can be made, it also reduces the number of entries in the competition. For a team sport like soccer, the benefits of the former are likely to outweigh the costs of the latter: hence Beckenbauers assertion. In the Olympics, individual rather than team sports dominate: a unified Euro area team would have a significantly smaller number of competitors than 17 individual countries. Where margins of winning are small and (as a result) luck inevitably plays a relatively more substantial role in determining results, having fewer entrants may lower the final medal tally. A variety of other relevant factors also support the expectation of better medal performance from a unified team: The intra-Euro area competition implied by the need to select Olympic entrants from a much wider pool may force athletes to train harder simply to be selected, honing their skills in a way that makes them more competitive on the global Olympic stage. Focusing the resources of the Euro area as a whole on a smaller number of top quality athletes with a real chance of winning medals would improve the overall medal count relative to a situation where those resources are distributed over a broader set of Against these, there are other factors which operate in the opposite directionafter all, despite Beckenbauers confidence, Germany has failed to add to its three World Cup triumphs since reunification: One cannot deny the role that national pride plays in driving sporting excellence. In the unforgiving environment of international sport, the extra motivation taken from representing ones country may have a decisive effect: while athletes may be inspired to extra efforts by competing for Germany or France, representing a Euro area team may not arouse the same passionand results could suffer as a consequence. Support from the standsagain, something that may make a difference when the line between success and failure is so narrowmay be less passionate for a remote Euro ECONOMIC page 33

Prepare for Spanish Implosion: Businesses Threaten to Leave Spain Over Tax Hikes; Finance Minister Proposes 56% Tax on Short-Term Financial Transactions
noreply@blogger.com (Mike Mish Shedlock) (Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 5:59:00 PM

Cristobal Montoro, the Spain's finance minister has made a liquidity destroying proposal to tax short-term financial transactions at an astonishing 56% tax rate. Businesses are already upset over hikes in the VAT and have threatened to leave Spain. Interestingly, in spite of raising taxes elsewhere, the VAT was lowered on the highly subsidized renewable energy sector. Why? Here is the answer: "Secretary of State for Finance, Ricardo Martinez Rico, is the leading advisor in the industry". Prepare for Spanish Implosion Here is the "as-is" Google translation of the El Econimista article Waiting for the Intervention. Emphasis in bold not added. The Bundesbank is opposed to the purchase of deduda, the only thing that can save Spain and Italy. Autonomy, conflict, power and government crisis rumors complicate everything. The situation is out of control. The government approved last week the biggest adjustment of his story in hopes that it would serve to calm the markets. But it was not. The risk premium

yesterday overcame the barrier of hundred basis points, something never seen, and the bond closed at 7.27 percent. The first question that arises is what should make efforts so painful as the increase in VAT or removal of the extra pay of officials if markets continue to punish us hard. It would be naive to think that just announced a big cut, things would begin to change. There are still many uncertainties that sow mistrust. The fine print of 65,000 million adjustment shows that there is more emphasis on income than expenditure. Tax revenues provide about 38,000 million, compared to 27,000 in less spending. This, coupled with the rise in income tax, makes Spain one of the countries with the highest direct and indirect tax burden on the planet Earth. Economists warn that this tax increase may cause a contraction in gross domestic product (GDP) higher than expected by the Government. Especially in 2013, in which the drop exceed 1 percent, twice the official estimate. Apart from the contradictions of the official figures of the adjustment and the controversy, was put in doubt the 22,000 million in revenue under VAT,

only so far this year has accumulated a fall of 10 percent. The increase will boost the economy submerged and can neutralize the expected increase in revenue, defended himself as finance minister, Cristobal Montoro, as opposed to undertake this measure. The general impression is that more cuts are to be decided. Montoro himself fed this thesis to warn this week in Congress that state coffers are empty. The other settings should focus on the regions and aim to remove 427,000 employees created by them during the last ten years(see story on Monday in elEconomista). However, this week has been strong resistance from regional governments to make further cuts. The call of the President of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, a regional rebellion against the Government is a paradigm for stimulating this international distrust. Many people wonder, moreover, what moral authority left to the PP's general secretary, Maria Dolores de Cospedal, to convince the rest of communities governed by their party, when his government of Castilla-La Mancha is among reprimanded. No, of course. I do not think right now an

investor in and outside our borders who believe in the autonomy will obey Montoro. The finance minister was guilty of naivete in advance at the beginning of the year 5.176 million for half of the estimated settlement funding system because it has stopped to tighten their belts. In addition, ICO 15,000 million in loans to cover the debt did not help anything. In the energy sector also confusion reigns. Vice President, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, yesterday attributed the delay in reforms that several ministers were outside Spain, including Industry, Jos Manuel Soria. But the reality is that Soria travel left after slamming the door and refuse to accept the distribution of tax burden and renewable power on the table by Montoro. Some companies threatened to move the headquarters of their business outside Spain to avoid the very strong tax hike planned by the minister of finance. The reduced charge provided for solar energy, although it is one of the most subsidized, and the fact that former Secretary of State for Finance, Ricardo Martinez Rico, is the leading advisor in the industry, Abengoa, raises many critical and casts suspicion on the cleaning process. If autonomy is

not yet speak openly of rebellion, in power so clearly. To add more uncertainty, Montoro announced his willingness to levy confiscatory rates close to 56 percent of the purchase or sale of short-term securities. An initiative incomprehensible allegedly coming from a government liberal or right, we like a capricious regime such as the populist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. To complete the clinical astonishing about our rulers, the rumors of clashes between the ministers of finance and economics, Luis de Guindos, or between it and the head of the Economic Office, Alvaro Nadal, have given way to a possible government crisis to designate a single responsible in economic affairs. The recent article by Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, El Pais, dedicated to solving economic problems rather than addressing the many international crises, pitted the bonfire of the vanities. area than for a home country enjoying a greater emotional connection. Lastly, in order to raise their profile and status, small countries may be prepared to devote a greater share of national resources to achieve sporting success. East Germany is a case in pointalthough its welldocumented programme of institutionalised doping illustrates how such nationalistic ambitions can lead in dangerous and damaging directions.

the second table we focus on team sports and evaluate how reunification influenced Olympic performance in these events. It is in this domain that the benefits of integration are likely to be most pronounced. We first compare the combined medal performance of the two German teams prior to reunification with that of a unified German team since: the difference in shown in column A of the table below. Economists call this an event study analysiswe simply look at changes before German Lessons and after. The exercise shows The German experience offers mixed results: better performance some insight into how Olympic in hockey, but worse in football performance could be improved (for example). by unifying teams at the Euro area But, as economists, we are level. In our Germans at the Olympics before view, these exercises offer a poor and after reunification in 1990. guide to the impact of unification At first glance, the table does not on medal-winning performance: suggest that German reunification they fail to control for other led to a significant improvement factors that have influenced in medalwinning performance. The number of refined view of what would medals won per participant is also h a p p e n i f o t h e r t h i n g s much lower for the unified equalteams were to unify Germany than it was for East elsewhere. Germany before reunification. To illustrate, consider the rise of Looks Like Team Spirit China: it only started routinely This first table shows overall participating in the Olympics at medal performance. Given the the Los Angeles Games in 1984, distinction we made between team but has subsequently invested and individual events above, in heavily in improving its sporting

performance (and, of course, has a vast pool of potential talent to draw upon). Chinese entry has affected the medal-winning opportunities of other countries, including Germany. It was easier to win medals prior to 1984 (and thus before German reunification) than after. If we do not control for this effect, we would end up with a (downward) biased estimate of the impact of reunification, which would lead us to forecast too weak an impact of Euro area integration on Olympic medals won. Economists use an approach called difference-indifferences estimation to deal with this problem. This approach compares the change in performance in the case of interest with the change seen in a control group over the same period. The differences between these two changes in performance (i.e., the differenceindifferences) captures what is special about the case being studied, controlling for other factors that influence the control group. To use our example above, by comparing how German medal performance changed across reunification with how (say) French medal performance changed over the same period, we purge the impact of Chinese Olympic participation from our estimate of the impact of German reunification, since both Germany and France will have been influenced by China.

Not surprisingly, the key challenge in applying this approach is to identify a good control group. Two criteria are relevant here: (1) controls should perform similarly to Germany prior to reunification; and (2) controls should not experience a spill-over from the impact of reunification on German performance. The latter criterion is challenging: in a zero sum context like competing for Olympic medals, Germanys gains must come at the expense of other countries. Nonetheless, we apply this difference-indifferences approach and select France as the control. The results are shown in column B of the table on the previous page. Across the set of sports evaluated, the results remain mixed. We do see some cases of improvement, notably in hockey. But on average we identify a deterioration in German medalwinning performance after reunification. However, a closer look at the table reveals that France may not be a very good control group. There are few French medal winners in the sports we consider, either before or after reunification. While this suggests caution in interpreting the difference-in-differences result, evaluating the robustness of our base case by using US results as an alternative control (not shown, for brevity) does not alter the conclusions.

Benefits of Sporting Integration Our analysis identifies benefits from sporting integration in specific cases, but these cannot be generalised across all events. On average, German medal performance at the Olympics has deteriorated since reunification, even in the team events where the benefits should have been greatest. We have identified a large number of potential pros and cons of unification: to capture the benefits, one naturally needs to develop a structure that maximises the former and minimises the latter. This requires a high degree of institutional development. Sounds familiar? These messages may resonate with the Euro areas ongoing attempts to grapple with its financial and sovereign crises. current division of responsibilities between the Treasury and between them and the Economic Bureau, which serves as a minister in the shade to chair the Executive Committee for Economic Affairs in the absence of Rajoy. The spark that triggered this Molotov cocktail on black economic forecasts and instability of the government team is highly liquid Treasuries. The data show that the mattress is exhausted debt issued earlier this year at affordable prices, so from now the Treasury must pay prohibitive prices, which make untenable the vote. The mere request of the autonomous community of Valencia to qualify for the liquidity fund announced by the Treasury market sparked fears and attacks on the risk premium. The alarm was given by the auction on Thursday, because it showed no there is a demand for government debt beyond the lyrics to one year. With banks in retreat, because they have run out of ammunition delivered earlier this year by the ECB, nobody can predict how they will renew the 28,000 million coming due next October. The German Parliament gave strong support for the bank

bailout. But the statements by Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, the end of last week, encouraging all to seek the intervention Rajoy, are a sign of strong opposition within the ECB to resume purchases of debt of Spain and Italy, all that could save us. It is also an indication that Germany is not aware of the risk to the single currency. Experts predict that if Spain is operated, the eye of the hurricane will move over Italy and eventually destroy the entire European project. The countdown to self-destruction of the euro is already underway. We'll see if we can stop it. Countdown To Self-Destruction Some of that translation is a bit choppy, but it is certainly easy enough to understand the entire gist of the article. My Take Spain certainly needs reforms such as shedding government workers, removing subsidies, and revising work rules to make it easier to fire (and thus hire) workers. However, Spain does not need increased VAT taxes and it certainly does not need a 56% tax on financial transactions. In short, Spain is resisting the measures that would be productive, and implementing

those measures that will do the most harm. Spain Set to Implode Spain is set to implode. I agree with the author that "a countdown to self-destruction" is underway. Phoenix Pastor Jailed Over Home Bible Study to Serve 3 Years?

(Christianpost.com > Most Popular)

July 17, 2012| 3:38 pm The Arizona pastor who is currently imprisoned for hosting regular Bible studies at his home may have to serve up to three years for violating his probation. Michael Salman, an ordained pastor of Church of God in Christ and the founder of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Phoenix, appeared in court Monday on charges that he violated his probation by continuing to hold Bible studies on his 4.6 acre property with more than 12 people, and for failing to pay over $12,000 in fines. The Phoenix Municipal Court had earlier ruled that Salman was not to have more than 12 people at his home until he met the city's building codes, fire codes and other safety codes. "He was found guilty of violating that (12 people limit) today. So in two to four weeks supposedly the court will decide what they are going to do in terms of his violation," said John Whitehead, Salman's attorney and founding president of the legal group The Rutherford Institute, to The Christian Post after the Monday court hearing. "The prosecutor is arguing for more jail time." READ FACT SHEET FROM THE RUTHERFORD

INSTITUTE Whitehead noted that 15 to 20 people were meeting in Salman's home for Bible study after the court's order of a 12-persons limit. "[They brought him to court] to see if they are going to extend the 60 days in jail," he said. "He is on three year probation, which means that he could get up to three years in jail." Follow us Last Monday, Salman began his 60-day jail sentence at Maricopa County Jail for hosting Bible studies twice a week in his home. A Phoenix court found him guilty of 67 code violations in connection to failing to comply to the city's building, fire, safety, and zoning codes. The city of Phoenix argues that Salman's case is not about religious freedom but about public safety. In an interview with CP, the city prosecutor or chief prosecutor for Phoenix, Aaron J. Carreon-Ainsa, noted that five judges have looked at Salman's case, including two U.S. district judges and an appellate judge, and have affirmed the conviction. "We are interested in ensuring that people are provided a safe place in which they can worship," said Carreon-Ainsa. "We don't want a tragedy that we sometimes read about in third world countries where people are

gathered for whatever purpose and they perish because of a fire or some other situation that they are not able to protect themselves [from]..." READ FACT SHEET FROM THE CITY OF PHOENIX Salman, who is a father of six, has been hosting Bible studies on his property for the past 7 years. The city of Phoenix began interacting with Salman about zoning concerns starting in 2006, when the Zoning Administrator informed him that his property was analogous to a church and therefore he should adjust his home to comply with the Zoning Ordinance. According to the City of Phoenix Prosecutor's Office, the city has repeatedly asked Salman to comply with the safety codes and "he chose to ignore these requests for voluntary compliance prior to the commencement of any proceedings." But Brad Dacus, founding president of the Pacific Justice Institute which has defended several home Bible study cases weighed in and disagreed with the city's argument. "The city is dealing with a 5-acre parcel of land. Based on the information we have received, there are no bona fide health or safety concerns that have been brought to light," said Dacus to

CP on Tuesday. "There have been no injuries incurred by any individuals that have come to gather for this purpose. There are no imminent risks of injuries for anyone gathered for this religious purpose. And there are no bona fide nuisances that have arisen since its usage. "This attempt by the city of Phoenix is an overbearing usage of their authority in a manner that is clearly not warranted." In a YouTube video, the Salmans give a tour of their large property, emphasizing that the dozens of cars that come to their home for the Bible study are parked behind their private gate on their property and not on the streets. A notable discrepancy is that while Salman says around 30 to 40 people usually gather at his home, the city says that up to 80 people with seating for a hundred is common. Salman and his attorney decry the city's harsh punishments meted out over a home Bible study to be in violation of the defendant's religious freedom. Dacus also commented on the most recent court hearing, "To the extent to which the city of Phoenix has placed this limitation of only 12 people being able to meet in this home, such a narrow limitation is suspect as necessary and it seems arbitrary in terms of the number selected and as well as

who they chose to enforce it." PJI recently successfully defended a local Christian Bible group meeting in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., that was vulnerable to a controversial city code that required all religious, fraternal or nonprofit organizations of three people or more to obtain a conditional-use permit for hosting meetings, including Bible studies. The couple hosting the Bible group faced a $300 fine for violating this code. PJI successfully convinced the city of San Juan Capistrano to adopt a new policy that now allows up to 40 people to meet in a private residence without a permit. But the news is not as positive for Salman, who still faces a $12,180 fine and may have his 60-day jail sentence extended in a few weeks by the court. Clarification: July 17, 2012: An article on July 17, 2012, about an Arizona pastor who is currently serving a prison sentence for hosting a weekly Bible study held in a building that violated the city's building safety codes originally reported that five judges found Michael Salman guilty. Pat Robertson Tells Christian Viewer to Dump Muslim Girlfriend

July 18, 2012| 9:06 am (Photo: YouTube via The Christian Post) Pat Robertson appears on "The 700 Club" Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011. During the Q&A segment of the program, a man named Brad wrote in explaining that he had been in a relationship with a Muslim woman for three years and that they were planning to get married. "No way! No way! She's going to want to do her Muslim thing and you're going to want to do your Christian thing. There will be constant struggle and strife. Walk away," said Robertson. "In the Old Testament they were forbidden to intermarry with the heathen." Glenn Stanton, director of global family formation studies for Focus on the Family, told The Christian Post that he agreed with Robertson's views on interfaith marriage. "The wisdom of God's Word is quite clear on believers being unequally yoked. And marrying someone who is not a Christian

who is not a daily disciple of Christ is being unequally yoked, regardless of what their beliefs might be," said Stanton. "And the wisdom of Scripture is, not surprisingly, backed up by social science, which finds that interfaith marriages are significantly more likely to be unstable, even leading to higher levels of divorce." According to a 2008 survey performed by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, about 25 percent of married Americans have a spouse of a different religious sect. When considering Protestant denomination s as different religious groups, the number rises to 37 percent. Stanton told CP that he believed this large percentage of interfaith marriages was because couples in America are not taking faith in practice as seriously as previous generations. "A serious commitment to faith and the practice of that faith is not as important to many couples these days," said Stanton. "Less than 50 years ago, an interfaith marriage was when a Presbyterian married a Methodist. That was when distinct belief, practice and identity was taken

more seriously." The example that Robertson commented on focused on a Christian-Muslim couple. According to Kamal Nawash, president of the Free Muslims Coalition, Robertson's remarks fit with what many religious leaders preach. "While I am not a fan of Robertson, he cannot be blamed for his latest statement. He is merely preaching generally accepted Christian orthodoxy. Most religious leaders, of any faith, adopt the same rule as Robertson," said Nawash in an interview with The Christian Post. Nawash explained that with Islamic practice there is some room allowed for interfaith marriages, but only between a Muslim and someone who is either Jewish or Christian. Further, most Muslims assume that only men can marry outside the religion. "Textual Islam is unique among the Abrahamic faiths. It allows interfaith marriages and prohibits husbands from even asking their wives to convert to Islam," said Nawash. "However, Muslims are not allowed to marry people outside

No, Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Chris Redfield won't be trading in their various killing implements for pointy red shoes, nor will they be playing a grotesque twoheaded version of Sega's iconic mascot, but the man who voices both those characters will be. Okay, maybe not the grotesque two-headed monster thing, but Roger Craig Smith(who voices both Ezio and Chris) will be playing the role of Sonic the Hedgehog in Disney's forthcoming reference vehicle Wreck-it Ralph. Late on Friday the town near Denver gathered for two vigils as it emerged that Holmes bought more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition on the Internet, and four guns, in the two months before the rampage. The shooter, dressed in black and wearing body armour and a gas mask, burst into the movie theatre barely 20 minutes into the midnight screening early on Friday, throwing two tear-gas type devices before opening fire with several weapons. Syria fighting spreads to Aleppo

(AL JAZEERA ENGLISH (AJE))
Submitted at 7/21/2012 4:41:33 PM

Syrian troops and armoured vehicles have pushed into a rebelheld district of Aleppo and struck back in the capital, Damascus, against fighters emboldened by a bomb attack that killed top officials of President Bashar alAssad's government. Opposition activists in Aleppo, Syria's biggest city and a northern commercial hub, said that hundreds of families were fleeing residential areas on Saturday after the military swept into the Salaheddine district, which had been in rebel hands for two days. Fighting was also reported in the densely-populated, poor neighbourhood of al-Sakhour. "The sound of bombardment has been non-stop since last night. For the first time we feel Aleppo has turned into a battle zone," a housewife, who declined to be named, said by phone from the city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the fighting started spreading on Saturday afternoon. "Violent clashes are taking place between Syrian regime forces and rebel fighters in the Sakhour neighbourhood and the Haydariya area," the UK-based group said. The Observatory also reported heavy clashes at the entrance of al -Rastan, a rebel stronghold in Homs province, saying troops

were trying to enter the town. There are also reports of renewed clashes in two districts of the Syrian capital. In Homes, at least two people were killed in a prison mutiny in Syria's central city of Homs on Saturday, opposition activists said. They said some guards had joined in the mutiny, which broke out shortly after midnight, but that government forces from a nearby intelligence base had arrived to crush the rebellion. Some activists said that two prisoners were killed, while others put the death toll at four and said the mutiny was continuing, although the prison was surrounded. Meanwhile, UN chief Ban Kimoon said on Saturday that an envoy will be dispatched to Syria to assess the situation as violence increases in the embattled country, adding that Assad's government must stop "the killing and the use of heavy weapons" against population centres. Multiple control points Rebels have also managed to seize border checkpoints in recent days, most significantly, taking control of a key border crossing with Iraq. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf, reporting from Erbil, Iraq, noted that this crossing, the second at the SyrianIraqi border, is important because it might signal a sea change among a group ordinarily loyal to Assad.

Meanwhile, a tense calm prevailed in the capital, Damascus, after six days of intense fighting. The army deployed tanks on Friday to push rebels out of alMidan neighbourhood, where fighting left cars gutted and fighters' bodies in the streets. Adam Scott may have solved British Open's mysteries - Los Angeles Times

Submitted at 7/21/2012 7:14:46 PM

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England So much was going on at the British Open on Saturday that it was hard to tell whether this was a golf tournament or a mystery novel. The what-ifs were as fascinating as the who-done-its. The who-done-its were mainly Adam Scott, Zach Johnson and Graeme McDowell. Scott, a handsome and heretofore underachieving Aussie, played with 36-hole leader Brandt Snedeker in the final twosome, caught him quickly as Snedeker's magic-wand putter ran out of batteries, and walked right down the middle of most fairways to a two-under-par 68 and a four-shot lead. "It was pretty solid stuff," Scott said. Johnson, the best that Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has to offer, rebounded from a stubbed-toe 74 Friday at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes course and put up the best score of the day with a 66, leaving him six back of Scott. "I hit some really good shots today," he said, "but I also think I left a few out there." Another key character was McDowell, whose recent performances have begun to beg the question of just exactly who

should be the big-name golfer from Northern Ireland. While McDowell's younger Portrush buddy, Rory McIlroy more hair and more groupies remained well back in the pack with a 73 that left him 16 shots off the lead, McDowell charged with a 67 that got him into Sunday's final group with Scott. A month ago, at theU.S. Open at Olympic in San Francisco, McDowell was in the same position. He had a 20foot putt on the 72nd hole that would have gotten him into a playoff and given him a shot at a second U.S. Open title. It missed, but McDowell is right back in the big spotlight again. "This is special for me," he said. "Back-to-back major championships in the last group on Sunday." Then, there were the players and the story lines that could have been, the what-ifs. One was the slight faltering of Snedeker, who is a bright and quotable graduate of no less than Vanderbilt University, who had captivated the British press after his 64 Friday and had many poised over keyboards to tap out a fun second chapter. One angle included Snedeker as another Huck Finn-looking kid, whose early role model was the original Huck Finn golf hero and British Open star, Tom Watson.

Another was Snedeker's Nashville roots and his admission he was a country music fan. Fun song titles under consideration included: "I lost my wife and my putter and I miss it." But five bogeys in seven holes in the middle of his round turned the fun lyrics sour. Another what-if was Masters champion Bubba Watson. What if he had kept on going after making four birdies in six holes around the turn? Would we get another chance, in a Sunday climactic moment of a major, to see Bubba wrap a shot around six trees or through a storm drain, or over a highway sign? But a double bogey on the 15th made Watson's walk home more limp than swagger and his 68 left him nine shots back of Scott. But the best what-if of all, the great drama that might have been, disintegrated when McDowell made a birdie putt on No. 17 to take the spot in the final group opposite Scott. It was perhaps the first time a positive stroke by the popular Irishman drew groans in the media center. Until that moment, it appeared that Scott would walk the final 18 in the company of Tiger Woods, who just kind of hung around Saturday with his 70, and is in fourth place alone, a shot behind McDowell and Snedeker and a

not-insurmountable five behind Scott. The drama of the Scott-Woods final group was that Scott's caddie is Steve Williams, who was on the bag for Woods for 13 of his 14 major titles and whose split with Woods, in the wake of Woods' marital blowup and disintegrating game, was not pretty. The announcement of the separation was terse, but the real ugliness exploded in, of all places, Shanghai, in November 2011. The occasion was an annual tour caddie awards party, sponsored by international bank HSBC and held in a tent adjacent to a big hotel. The evening was supposed to be fun, mostly a roast, and journalists invited to attend had to agree that the proceedings would be off the record. Three from the USA were there. One award went to Williams, a New Zealander who, as Woods' caddie, had become among the highest-paid sports figures in his country. He had been on Scott's bag when Scott won the World Golf Championships event at Firestone three months earlier. Williams had called that victory "my best ever," an obvious jab at Woods, and in his acceptance speech that night in Shanghai, he jabbed much deeper by including a racial slur. One of the U.S. journalists there

that night said that, while the acoustics in the tent were bad, "Everybody kind of stopped and was stunned." A few days later, a small group of British journalists who had not been on hand heard what happened from other caddies, and, as they were not bound by an offthe-record agreement, wrote the story. The tension, despite Williams' later apology, remains. In the quick-quote area Saturday after he finished, Woods was asked about playing in the final group not specifically about Williams. But he obviously knew the genesis of the question and the tone of his dismissal seemed to speak volumes. "Well, I'm not in it," he said. "So it is what it is." For golf, it might be best that the Sunday soap opera didn't come to pass. For people who write columns, bad luck. bill.dwyre@latimes.com This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/contentonly/faq.php#publishers. "I was glad to have another opportunity." Cain signed a $112.5 million, five-year extension in April. The deal guaranteed him at least $141 million over seven years, including this season's salary and a 2018 buyout. The Phillies are hoping to re-sign Hamels before the 2008 World Series MVP becomes a free agent after this season. If a deal isn't reached before the trade deadline, Hamels could be gone. Of course, that doesn't mean the Phillies couldn't re-sign him in the offseason. Hamels already has said he would be open to returning to Philadelphia, even if he's traded. "I can't control it," Hamels said. Fearing they were seeing Hamels with the Phillies for the last time, fans gave him loud cheers before the game and a standing ovation when he exited. Hamels waved to the crowd on his way to the dugout. Down 4-2, the Phillies rallied in the sixth. Jimmy Rollins walked to start the inning. Shane Victorino followed with a bloop single to right for his 1,000th career hit.

After Utley flied out to shallow left, Howard connected. He ripped a 1-2 pitch to the seats in rightcenter to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead. Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, has three homers in 11 games after missing the first 84 games recovering from surgery on his left Achilles tendon. But the Giants tied it at 5 when Cabrera led off the eighth with his 10th homer. Hamels hadn't allowed three homers in a game since June 26, 2010, vs. Toronto. That was 67 starts ago. Posey followed with a double and advanced to third on a grounder. He was caught trying to steal home when Blanco took a pitch instead of bunting. Hamels gave up three homers in his previous five starts combined before giving up two in the third. First, Cain hit a towering shot to left for his sixth career homer and first this season. With two outs, Posey hit an 0-2 pitch out to left to put the Giants up 3-1. Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is a kleptomaniac

I have a severe problem with stealing everything I can in video games. As part of my natural drive to satiate my escapist needs (as theft isn't a part of my daily routine), doing what I can to steal an item in nearly every video game possible is oddly relaxing to me. Take The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening as an example. Regardless of the consequences, trying to save a few rupees by nabbing an item from the shopkeeper is the start of a behavior pattern I've recently begun noticing. I recall the first time I tried catching a trainer's Pokemon, or would meticulously check every crevice of an NPC's house in every Pokemon game in the series (when characters weren't home, I'd consider my actions as an additional crime, breaking and entering). You could argue that such actions aren't entirely unethical. Sure, hacking any mmo like WoW to

But in a case like Link's Awakening, when a game developer instills consequences for virtual petty theft, couldn't you consider the inclusion of theft an admission that stealing property is just another solution to a problem? Guitar Hero clone used to teach unknowable, subconscious passwords

Jordan Mallory (Joystiq)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 9:00:00 PM

We're not entirely sure if this new development in password technology is amazing or terrifying or both, but a group of cryptographers and neuroscientists have developed a method through which a subject can be taught a 30-character password and not even know that they know it. This is all accomplished through repeated play sessions of a keyboardcontrolled Guitar Hero clone. I mean, how else would you do it? The "game," developed by Stanford University student Hristo Bojinov, has players pressing the S, D F, J, K and L keys on their keyboards as corresponding symbols fall from the top of the screen to the bottom, as seen

above. During a standard 45 minute play session, nearly 4,000 "notes" are generated and entered by the player, 80 percent of which are actually part of a cryptographic sequence. By the time the session is over, the subject has "learned" a 30-

sequences. The subject subconsciously trained on their specific password would statistically perform better on those sequences rather than the sequences belonging to other passwords, thus verifying their identity. Unfortunately, Bojinov's subconscious encryption engine isn't playable online at present. Maybe that's for the best, though - we're not sure how ready we are to be implanted with unknowable knowledge. David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Alex Cockburn: A Bitter Life

David Horowitz (FrontPage Magazine FrontPage)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 4:27:29 PM

Alex Cockburn is dead of cancer at the age of 71. Alex was an influential voice in a generation of leftists who did an enormous disservice to this country and the world at large by carrying on a political tradition and promoting a political cause that killed 100 million people in the 20 th Century in peacetime and consigned more than a billion others to immeasurable and unnecessary poverty, even starvation, by imposing on them the crackpot socialist schemes of Karl Marx and his misguided disciples. Alexs father Claud was also a noted writer and both an agent of and propagandist for Stalins bloody regime. Alex exhibited in his own person many of the worst Stalinist traits. He was personally vicious in attacking political opponents and even friends, such as Christopher

Hitchens, about whom he wrote one of the most disgusting columns I have ever read although in fairness it must be said that Christopher himself was a master of this particular form of literary abuse. On the other hand, Alex had worthy sense of humor, which even a target like myself could appreciate, and was a clever

writer though inferior as a stylist to Christopher whom he obviously envied and paid back with insults. It could be said of Alex that he was also a gutsy individual who, like Christopher, on occasion displayed independence of mind a rarity among leftists who are normally incapable of challenging the progressive herd. Alexs most

notorious deviation from orthodoxy was his refusal to support the idea that human beings are responsible for climate change, a cardinal tenet of the progressive faith. This caused the obituary writer for the Los Angeles Times,[1] which like most of our metropolitan papers has become a left-wing tabloid, to say of him his thoughts on global

warming aligned him with the far right as though matters of science should be subject to a political party line. Needless to say, the Times obit failed to mention the fact that Alex and his father were shills for Communists, or that Alex was anti-American and an anti-Semite and a cheerleader for the Islamofascists of Hizbollah, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood who are bent on destroying us. Despite the unfortunate resurgence in our time of the vile ideologies of the 1930s and 1960s to which he devoted his life, Alex was at the end a bitter and spiteful man. This was the predictable fruit of a life spent badly in recrimination and anger. Batman attack 'planned for months'

(Evening Standard - News)
Submitted at 7/21/2012 9:10:09 PM

The Colorado shooting suspect planned the rampage that killed 12 midnight movie-goers, including a six-year-old girl with "calculation and deliberation", police said. For months James Holmes received deliveries that authorities believe armed him for battle and were used to rig his flat with dozens of bombs. Experts were still working to clear dangerous explosive materials from inside Holmes' suburban Denver home, two days after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a cinema minutes into the premiere of Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Fifty-eight people were injured. His flat was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby-trapped to kill "whoever entered it", Aurora police chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have probably been one of his officers. "You think we're angry? We sure as hell are angry," Mr Oates said. Authorities would not discuss a motive for one of the deadliest

mass shootings in recent US history, as makeshift memorials for the victims sprang up and relatives began to publicly mourn their loved ones. Holmes, 24, had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate programme in neuroscience and neighbours and former classmates in California have said he was an intelligent loner who said little. But he had apparently prepared the attack at the Aurora multiplex cinema well in advance, receiving deliveries by post to his home and school for four months and buying thousands of rounds of ammunition on the internet, Mr Oates said. "He had a high volume of deliveries to both his work and home address. We think this explains how he got his hands on the magazine, ammunition," he said, as well as the rigged explosives in his flat. "What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation," Mr Oates added. Mr Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting cinema-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within

the last two months and recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet. Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over 300 dollars (192) on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company. It was not known why the suspect chose a cinema to stage the assault, or whether he intended some twisted, symbolic link to the film's violent scenes. Holmes is in solitary confinement for his protection at a county detention facility on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He is due in court for an initial hearing on Monday and had been appointed a lawyer, authorities said. The Taxman Cometh If you want to publicly criticize Argentinas government, make Submitted at 7/21/2012 7:01:00 PM sure all your tax filings are in posted at 8:01 pm on July 21, order. 2012 by Fausta Wertz That was the thinly veiled Sicking the taxman on your m e s s a g e P r e s i d e n t C r i s t i n a political opponents is becoming Fernndez de Kirchner sent q u i t e t h e v o g u e i n o u r Wednesday near the end of a hemisphere: speech broadcast on all national

television and radio stations. Reiterating her standard criticism that media operations are depressing Argentinians with gloom-and-doom stories, she derided an article published last Sunday. (She didnt say this, but the paper that ran it was Clarn, the countrys largest-circulation daily.) In the story, the owner of a

real-estate agency, one of its directors and an employee were quoted complaining that recent government measures essentially blocking the sale of foreign currency to citizens had paralyzed their business. Kirchner then dropped this bit of information: the firm in question hasnt filed taxes since 2007 and

neither has the director quoted in the story, whom she named. How did she know? She had called up the head of the tax agency to ask, and this, too, she openly revealed on Wednesdays broadcast. TAXMAN page 55

Kirchners statement on Wednesday was different: by saying that she had called the taxman out of supposed concern for the real-estate agency, she unabashedly established cause and effect: you criticize me; I punish you. Was there a better way for her to flex muscle than signal that Argentinas government agencies are at her beck and call and say so with no shame? Not cause-and-effect, but coincidental, Strassel: Obamas Enemies ListPart II First an Obama campaign website called out Romney donor Frank Vandersloot. Next the IRS moved to audit himand so did the Labor Department. Mr. VanderSloot has since been learning what it means to be on a presidential enemies list. Just 12 days after the attack, the Idahoan found an investigator digging to unearth his divorce records. This bloodhounda recent employee of Senate Democratsworked for a for-hire opposition research firm. Now Mr. VanderSloot has been targeted by the federal

government. In a letter dated June 21, he was informed that his tax records had been selected for examination by the Internal Revenue Service. The audit also encompasses Mr. VanderSloots wife, and not one, but two years of past filings (2008 and 2009). Mr. VanderSloot, who is 63 and has been working since his teens, says neither he nor his accountants recall his being subject to a federal tax audit before. He was once required to send documents on a line item inquiry into his charitable donations, which resulted in no changes to his taxes. But nothing morethat is until now, shortly after he wrote a big check to a Romney-supporting Super PAC. Two weeks after receiving the IRS letter, Mr. VanderSloot received anotherthis one from the Department of Labor. He was informed it would be doing an audit of workers he employs on his Idaho-based cattle ranch under the federal visa program for temporary agriculture workers. Perhaps all this is coincidence. Perhaps something in Mr. VanderSloots finances or on his

ranch raised a flag. Americans want to believe the federal government performs its duties without fear or favor. Only in this case, Americans can have no such confidence. Did Mr. Obama pick up the phone and order the screws put to Mr. VanderSloot? Ormore likelydid a pro-Obama appointee or political hire or career staffer see that the boss had an issue with this donor, and decide to do the president an unasked-for election favor? Or did he or she simply think this was a duty, given that the president had declared Mr. VanderSloot and fellow donors less than reputable? As a commenter in the latter article put it, Here is the problem. Despite living an exemplary life and keeping all of your affairs in order and legal to the best of your abilities, because the laws are so outrageously complex and of such breadth and volume that it is impossible to know them and thus adhere to them, everyone who has any arrangement beyond the most simple can likely be found, upon thorough investigation, to be in

violation of something. For this reason, getting audited can be problematic, despite honest attempts to stay compliant. Thus, people rightly fear being singled out and becoming an audit target. Criticisms of what have you to hide? are a simpletons response to such fears. Nowadays, managing a business or any enterprise is fraught with big and little gotchas in every conceivable corner. Not a good trend. Not good at all. Cross-posted at Faustas blog. This post was promoted from GreenRoom to HotAir.com. To see the comments on the original post, look here. ads in the 14-day period ending July 16, according to New Yorkbased Kantar Medias CMAG. The Romney campaign, which began July with $22.5 million, aired 16,946 spots during that period. Since more than 97 percent of those commercials were negative, that meant voters saw twice as many campaignfunded ads attacking Romney rather than Obama. Obama continued to draw down his campaign account, spending $58.1 million last month with $43 million for advertising, including broadcast and online. Romney spent $27.5 million during the month, less than half as much as Obama, with $11.1 million going for media. President Obamas campaign will never have a more substantial advertising advantage than it has had over the past few weeks, yet there is no evidence to suggest that the ballot has moved, Romneys pollster, Neil Newhouse, said in a July 16 memo. *** A much smaller group of wealthy liberals gave money last month to

Priorities USA Action, including actor Morgan Freeman, who put in $1 million. Chicago media company executive Fred Eychaner also gave $1 million. But big Democratic donors have largely steered clear of the super PAC, focusing their efforts instead on raising money directly for Obamas campaign. So far, Obamas bundlers have brought in at least $143 million, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of data provided by the campaign. In the last three months, 107 new bundlers joined the effort, including longtime Democratic money man Terry McAuliffe, Glee creator Ryan Murphy, private equity chief Hamilton James, tech investor Chris Sacca and Maryland Gov.Martin OMalley. Together, they raised at least $14.6 million for the quarter. *** I dont think the effort was designed to sway voters so much as it was a way to get the Democratic base motivated again, Smith added. To give them something to be angry about again. And that is a sad statement about

the Obama campaign. The president cant possibly run positive ads about his record, so his only option is to fire up Democratic voters to hate Romney. But even many Democrats are troubled by Obamas relentlessly negative and mostly misleading campaign. No, it appears the only Obama campaign strategy right now is to keep hammering on Romneys business record, and somehow convince voters that the exact date of Romneys departure from Bain Capital is more important than the 8 percent unemployment rate. *** Campaign disclosure forms for Obama for America, President Obamas reelection team, reveal a heavy emphasis on public opinion polling. According to the forms, in the month of June alone, Obama for America spent a whopping $2,639,265.72 on polling. This appears to be a record this election cycle. And it does not include money spent on polling by the Democratic party in the month of June.

Polling is often conducted by campaigns to make sure the candidates message is in sync with what the voters want to hear. *** The National Republican Congressional Committee narrowly outraised the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in June. The NRCC posted $10.7 million in receipts compared with the DCCCs $10.5 million. The NRCC ended June with $41 million in cash on hand while the DCCC closed the month with $33.2 million in the bank.
