DEPARTMENT FOR PROJECTS & ALUMNI AFFAIRES BIMM/BIMHRD/BIIB/BITM GUIDELINES FOR PROJECT REPORT POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT(PGDM) COMPANY PROJECT STUDIES(CPS) What is CPS? 1. The Company Project Studies CPS forms an important constituent of curricula at the Institute. Its aim is to broaden the students perception by providing an exposure to actual and real life organizational and environmental situations. It is an attempt to bridge the gap between academics and the corporate world by providing exposure to current best practices and helping them to acquire professional networking skills. It aims at enabling the students to relate management theory with its practice.
2. It is also an opportunity to optimize the students learning and convert the

SRI BALAJI SOCIETYS

CPS into a placement opportunity through dedication, commitment and hard work. This requires discipline, positive attitude, focused approach and inquisitiveness to learn.
3. During the CPS, the Student intern works closely with the industry guide

on clearly defined project deliverables that are assessed at the end of the summer training. Student interns may be required to make presentations to the leadership team of the division they are working with. The summer internship program provides companies an effective way of enabling the interns to understand the corporate ways of functioning and judge their fit in the company as prospective employees. Objectives of CPS : 4. The objectives of the Summer/Winter CPS Program are: a. To provide an opportunity for the Student interns to apply the concepts learnt in classes to work life situations. b. To sensitize Student interns to the workplace environment by handling time bound projects in a company.

SBS

c. To generate understanding among Student interns about their strengths and weaknesses in the work environment. d. To provide Student interns a platform to take up on-the-job executive training and develop a network which will be useful in enhancing their career prospects. CPS Focus ; 5. To achieve the above objectives, the CPS focuses on :
a. On-the-job management training. This will help the Student intern to gain

a deeper understanding of the work, culture, targets, interpersonal relationships, deadlines, work pressure, etc. of an organization.
b. Research and project work leading to application of concepts learnt in

class. The project work involves project research & design, designing and administering questionnaires, application of sampling techniques, surveys, tabulation of data, and application of statistical / managerial tools for analysis of data and drawing inferences/ testing hypothesis. Stages of CPS : 6. CPS can be broadly classified into three phases: a. Selection for CPS. b. Orientation in the company. c. Management Training. d. Project/Research work leading to Project Report.
7. The selection for CPS is done individually. Individual placement for CPS

will be vetted by Prof and student can inform accordingly.

8. Before joining and during the CPS, Student interns should orientate

themselves to the Company and the industry in which they will be carrying

out the CPS. In this period, they should understand the company, its customers and the competitors. Ideally they should study the financial statements of the company for the past couple of years, understand the policies of the company, study the macro environment in which the industry is operating and prepare a SWOT analysis.
9. Once they join the Student intern should get oriented to various

departments of the company and get to know the key functionaries. They should meet these functionaries with prior appointment and understand the various perspectives from them in managing their departments. Orientation in the Company: Prior to and during first week of CPS. To make student familiar with the company. Management Training during CPS: Till end of the CPS. Gives direct exposure to execution and support functions of the departments.

Project Report: It is submitted at the end of CPS to the company in format they require. It includes project/research design, questionnaires and surveys, application of classroom learning, application of statistical and other tools for analysis of data and conclusion. Project Report presentation and Viva voce on CPS will be held in the institute as a graded activity.
Management Training : 10. Management Training will be till the end of CPS. During this period, the

Student intern would be assigned various tasks by the organizations, which are part of the day to day functioning of the department within the organization. This training gives direct exposure to execution and support functions of the department. It gives a perspective of teamwork, organizational culture, team dynamics, result orientation, organizational pressures, complexities in achieving the desired result etc. A Student intern should take this as a learning experience and be ambitious in achieving and

surpassing the desired targets through professionalism and business acumen. Project Report : 11. A student would be assigned a specific project /research work involving projects/research design, designing of questionnaires, application of sampling techniques, administering the survey, tabulation of data, application of statistical/managerial tools for analysis of data and drawing inferences/testing hypothesis thereof and finally culminating in the preparation of a detailed Report. A multi-disciplinary project will be valuable.
12. A company report is submitted at end of CPS to company in format they

desire.
13.

Projects can be chosen by the student in the field of their specialization/interest.

How a Company Project Studies fits within an PGDM : 14. Ideally most of you are undertaking your degree to learn skills that will

enhance your employability and / or earning potential. Obtaining a degree is important for a number of reasons: it demonstrates that you have the ability to learn, have some core knowledge base in an aspect of management domain and have obtained important skills that will allow you to assist your future, or present employer in operating more effectively.
15. What is it that employers are looking for in new employees? This question

is significant as it is important that you adopt a marketing perspective of yourself early in your career you need to arm yourself with skills, abilities, and knowledge that make you more attractive to potential employers.
16. Many studies have generally found that the main attributes employers are

looking for are not so much an understanding of theory related to a specific discipline, but rather a range of generic managerial skills. These managerial skills include the ability to communicate effectively, to be selfdirected and work without supervision, and the ability to think outside the box and examine alternative solutions to complex problems. This broader set of business skills enables new employees to effectively integrate into organizations and assist with solving business issues. While you might not
4

SBS

use all these skills from Day One in an organization, employers wish to absorb those of you who can demonstrate these skills.
17. This implies that employers are keenly interested in ensuring that you not

only have a firm academic background (i.e., good grades), but that you have obtained level of proficiency in skills that are not frequently the primary focus of a given subject e.g. developing team work, critical thinking, problem solving, etc. Summer projects, individual or team-based, is an activity that allows you to develop these skill sets. Successful completion of a company project study can then be used to demonstrate to a future employer that you have the skill sets they are seeking which are as important as having a strong academic record.
Conduct and Behaviour : 18. The Student interns must remember that they are the representatives of the

institute and should behave in a manner projecting its stated values especially ethical standards. It is vital to be punctual, obedient, honest and sincere at work with the company. Unprofessional behaviour, dishonesty, misconduct, irregularity at work and unsatisfactory performance will tarnish the image of the institute and affect its placements. It will also result in a disciplinary issue with the college. Dos : Student Interns Should : a. The research on company you are placed in should start before arrival in the company. Get hold of a record of the latest Annual Report and explore the financial statement. Compose an assessment of the company including core business of the company, organizational structure, marketing channels, policies of HR and Finance and prepare a SWOT analysis. b. Always be positive and open to suggestions. c. Always keep a note of the important issues and points during the meetings/discussions. d. Focus on assignments given and complete your individual responsibilities allotted on schedule. e. Get in touch with the company guide / mentor as early as possible.
