Matting of Softfeel-Lacquers by use of DEUTERON MK / PERGOPAK M3 / DEUTERON PMH C

When parts inside of motorcars have to be coated since years special coating materials are used well known under the name "softfeel-lacquers". These lacquers have been produced till short time ago exclusively based on organic solvents. With development of suitable binders today also aqueous and 100 % solid UV curing systems for softfeel-lacquers in an increasing degree are developed and produced. Exceptional demands which result from their application interior of motorcars are made on these coatings. The finishing of the dashboard and with this its optical improvement is probably of the greatest importance. Great demands are made on a softfeel-lacquer for dashboard. In particular on abrasion resistance and scratch resistance of the surface. The surface has to be of low gloss, non-reflective and of luxurious look. These requirements can only be obtained by the choice of a suitable binder combined with a suitable matting agent. The binder has to be of extremely high flexibility even without the use of plasticizer to obtain the required softfeel character of the coating. When softfeel-lacquers are formulated in the optimum way they offer technical and economic advantages compared with laminating foil on dashboards. On small items in the interior of motorcars there will be in any case only the possibility of coating for the surfaces formation. Softfeel-lacquers can be designed in an optimum way based on above mentioned binder systems including organic matting agents based on micronized polymethyl urea resin, as DEUTERON MK, PERGOPAK M3 and DEUTERON PMH C. These products are used for matting. They take away from the flexible binders the tendency in thermoplasticity. This occurs in particular in coating materials on dashboards by influence of sunlight and resulting from this of heat. The presence of the organic matting agents imparts mat softfeel-lacquers abrasion resistance and scratch resistance with the required soft touch. Micronized polymethyl urea resin with its typical particle structure does practically not spoil the flexibility of the softfeel-lacquer and its required adhesion on thermoplasts even at permanent changing of temperatures. Easy incorporation of the micronized organic matting agents based on polymethyl urea resin is given with common mechanical stirrers also into aqueous coating systems. The use of wetting agents for the incorporation of DEUTERON MK, PERGOPAK M3 or DEUTERON PMH C is not required. This offers advantages with regard to water resistance of the applied coating and its behaviour with regard to the forming of micro-foam at production or application of the wet-lacquer. Especially the low influence to the viscosity of the 100 % solid UV curing softfeel-lacquers shows an important advantage for the producer. When there are special requirements on the degree of gloss at softfeel-lacquers which cannot be achieved by the sole use of micronized polymethyl urea resin the combination with small amount of inorganic matting agent based on SiO2 is recommended. The optimum in ratio of organic and inorganic matting agent has to be determined very carefully by individually laboratory trials. The presence of SiO2 can spoil the required surface properties with regard to scratch resistance and abrasion resistance.

INFO No. 602.2E Page 2 of 2 The use of organic products from the family of waxes is possible in principle to meet further individual requirements with regard to the coatings surface. It has to be taken into consideration that waxes have a certain softening point and with this they are limited in their temperature resistance. In softfeel-lacquers on dashboards this in particular can bring serious problems with insufficient temperature stability. Recommended products for the use in "aqueous softfeel-lacquers": DEUTERON MK PERGOPAK M3 DEUTERON PMH C organic matting agent based on polymethyl urea resin organic matting agent based on polymethyl urea resin organic matting agent based on polymethyl urea resin

app. 6,3 micron app. 13,8 micron does not apply

Processing
Because of its excellent dispersing properties DEUTERON MK can be stirred into the liquid phase with a simple stirrer. This passes for waterbased and solvent-based systems. It is also possible to grind DEUTERON MK with the mill base to obtain an optimum of dispersion in paints containing pigments or fillers.

Properties
DEUTERON MK is a micro-powder. The fineness makes possible to use DEUTERON MK in a wide field of applications for processing satin-flat and satin-gloss coatings. The small binder demand of DEUTERON MK leads only to a nonessential viscosity influence, which is significant for UV-current lacquers. DEUTERON MK is resistant against solvents and chemicals which are customary in the paint industry. Weather resistance and light stability are most favourable. DEUTERON MK has no or only a short influence on the coating transparency in the most binders. DEUTERON MK shows a heat resistance of more than 200 C. It is suitable for the use in waterbased coatings to decrease the blocking without worsening of the recoatability. The surface properties can be increased in some cases by using a combination of DEUTERON MK with a suitable wax, e.g. DEUTERON-WAX PP or DEUTERON-WAX TF.

Storage conditions
The storage stability of DEUTERON MK is at least 24 months at room temperature and dry conditions.

Packaging
Paper bag (10 kgs net)

Safety techn. characteristics

DEUTERON MK is according to the guiding principle 67/548/EEC no dangerous product and has not to be marked. Because it is a fine powder, the dust regulations must be taken into account and electrostatical charging has to be avoided.
