93 days
the walk down the hill is on may 20. Jayplay writer
katrina mohr helps you answer the big question
what are you doing after graduation?
In 93 days, I will be a
college graduate. I will
not, however, be a college
graduate with a clear idea of
what to do next. Like most
other graduating seniors, I
have a general idea of what
I do (and dont) want to do
in the coming years, but, as
of right now, my calendar is
wide open.
College is a long, strange
trip, and graduating is a big
accomplishment. But for
those who actually want
to put their degrees to
good use instead of simply
moving back in with mom
and dad, check out Off and
Away on page 10. Katrina
Mohr breaks down some of
the paths graduating seniors
can take in their frst few
post-college years, whether
its seeking gainful employ-
ment, traveling around the
world or volunteering.
But were not there yet
graduation is still 93 days
away. So, seniors, try not to
worry about the future too
much and enjoy life here at
KU (and those weird, giant
heads at the basketball
games, page 15) for a few
more months.

When Chris saule took art
history 100 last semester, he
knew the class wasnt going to
be easy.
For every test, saule, olathe
junior, and his classmates were
required to memorize 40 to 50
different pieces of art along
with the artist and time period.
While the majority of the
class printed the images and
made notecards, saule took a
different approach to studying
by transferring the images from
Google images onto his ipod.
it really helped with
memorization, he says. i could
take it wherever i went and
i didnt have to deal with an
entire stack of notecards.
along with the added
convenience, saule was also
able to save money. since
everything was downloaded to
his ipod, he didnt have to pay
printing fees.
saule is not the frst person
to use an ipod to further
his education. in 2004, duke
university gave out ipods to all
frst-year students attending
the university so that they could
easily access various podcasts
provided by professors and
record their class lectures.
students dont need to attend
duke university to be able to
record lectures on their ipod.
simply purchase an ipod
attachment called the Griffn
italk pro to record lectures
onto your ipod. this easy-to-use
device plugs into the bottom
of your ipod and records onto
the ipods seemingly endless
storage space. replay your
recordings to go over lectures
before an important test.
the italk pro sells for around
$40 at the Ku Bookstore, 1301
Jayhawk Blvd.
Currently,there is no program
for widespread use of ipods at
the university of Kansas, but it
might not be that far away, says
Jennifer Church-duran, head
of instructional services for Ku
libraries.
theres a lot of interest in
it, but oftentimes teachers can
be intimidated by the new
technology, Church-duran
says.the most important thing
is for faculty to have a support
structure to help them become
familiar with the equipment.
several colleges are already
implementing programs such
as podcasts for use in foreign
language study, Church-duran
says. this enables students
studying languages to hear the
words repeatedly, instead of
just seeing them written down.
some students are better
auditory learners, she says.
the use of the technology of
mp3 players could make the
difference for some students.
so far, most faculty members
have not turned to ipods to
help them in the classroom,
but libraries on campus are
starting a new program that
may change all this.
Ku libraries recently
received equipment that will
enable staffers to create multi-
lingual audio tours of the library
themselves. the fnal product
will be in the form of a podcast
that familiarizes students with
the building.
it will be simple to download
a map of the library, Church-
duran says. once everything
is downloaded, students can
access how to use the different
databases in the library.
the new system will also
tell students where they can
retrieve certain materials from
the library, making it easier
for students to fnd what they
need.
the library tour will only
be presented in an audio
format, but the library has not
overlooked video as an option
in the future.
Getting professors to embrce
the idea of incorporating ipods
further into the curriculum may
take some time.
theres a lot of potential,
says susan Zvacek, director of
instructional development and
support. it would take a lot of
work to do it right, so wed have
to put a lot of preparation into
the project
Church-duran agrees. if you
look around, the majority of
college students already have
ipods. its really just a matter
of providing the appropriate
software to make a program
like this a reality.

When their friends
dragged them out to an
international house party
to recuperate from recently
failed relationships, Carlos
Prez, Caracas, Venezuela,

Olathe junior, had no idea
that they were walking right
into a successful relationship.
In May, Prez and Niccum
will mark the two-year

when Prez cut in on another
guy to teach Niccum how to
dance the merengue. He got
her phone number that night
and asked her out the next,
and says that theyve been

Within the frst week of
working at on the Border, 3080
iowa st., emily
Fellers took home
burritos, cash
and a coworker.
Fellers, Wichita
senior, has been
dating Kristopher
Johnson, topeka
senior, for about
fve months.
she remembers
how he was the
frst person to
invite her to hang
out after work.
Fellers used to
go to work hung
over, with her hair
in tangles and in
makeup from the
night before until
she met Johnson.
after i met him,
i began to sexify
my uniform as much as i could
within regulation, Feller says.
Working almost 30 hours a
week and taking
a full semester
of classes leaves
little time to fnd
a date. it makes
sense for people
to fnd love in
the workplace
because its a
natural place
to firt, says
ian Kerner,
r e l a t i o n s h i p
expert and author
of DSI: Date Scene
Investigation.
a me r i c a n s
spend the
majority of their
time at work
and physical
proximity is the
best predictor
of whether or
not you will meet a mate, says
Chantal Young, instructor of
human sexuality.
a recent study by the career
Web site vault.com found that
58 percent of americans have
dated a coworker. But, before
you go dipping your pen in the
company ink, know how to play
the game.
Know the rules
First, fnd out whether the
company has a policy against
coworkers dating. the unique
issue to coworker dating is
power, and there can be a higher
potential for manipulation
or exploitation [than in other
relationships],Young says.
understand the difference
between dating someone who
works in the same department
as you and sleeping with your
boss. even if your boss resembles
mcDreamy, its not smart to play
the role of meredith Grey and
reciprocate his actions. if your
employer comes on to you with
sexual vibes and puts your job
in jeopardy, you have the right
to protect yourself and report
the misconduct, says Dr. susanne
eyman, a licensed psychologist
in lawrence.
Bottom line: its usually oK to
date the players on your team,
but not the coach.
Prepare
When youre ready to go
steady with your coworker, you
should talk about how you will
handle gossip or fghting. then,
eyman says, tell your coworkers
youre dating.
Fellers says that its hard for
her sometimes to keep her
personal fghts with Johnson out
of work. i tend to carry the fght
with me, she says.
if you cant avoid mixing work
and pleasure, transferring to
another location or department
might be an option.
Johnson says that he has
dated other coworkers before
he dated Fellers and found that
things can be awkward when
you break up. as long as you
are straightforward with the
girl, time can mend all wounds,
Johnson says.
How to act
Keep work professional and
not personal. the workplace is
not a playground for foreplay.
leave the heat-of-the-moment
sexcapades and taking each
other right then and there to the
bedroom, Kerner, relationship
expert, says.
the more time you spend at
work, the more likely you are to
fall in love with the person the
next cubicle, department or cash
register over. so go ahead and let
one button loose on your shirt
and spend an extra fve minutes
on your hair, because tonight
you might not leave work alone.

lacrosse
sport specs
The sport: A combination of
basketball, soccer and hockey,
lacrosse is one of the oldest sports in
the Western Hempishere, according
to lacrosse.org. It was frst played
by North American Indians and is
spreading across the U.S.
The players: There are two sides in
womens lacrosse: the defense and
the attack. The fve attackers work
together to score.
Defense consists of the point,
coverpoint, third man, center, wings
and goalkeeper.The point,coverpoint
and third man hit the ball out of an
opponents stick (stick check) and
run the ball. The center and the wings
are the runners who must be able to
keep the ball from the attack players.
The goalkeeper protects the goal.
Mens lacrosse is played with
an attacker, midfelders, defenders
and a goalie. Attackers score goals;
midfelders play defense and offense
as needed; defenders keep the
opponent from scoring; the goalie
rejects shots from the goal.
The setup: In womens lacrosse,
12 players take the feld at a time:
the goalie, six defenders and fve
attackers. The point of the game is
to shoot the ball into the opposing
teams goal. The team that scores
the most points in 60 minutes wins.
In mens lacrosse, 10 players take
the feld at a time: the goalie, three
defenders, three attackers and three
midfelders.
Action: The game begins with the
draw. One player from each team
goes to the center of the feld and the
two hold their sticks (called crosses)
together with the ball between them.
When the referee blows the whistle,
the two pop the ball into the air and
each player tries to take possession
of the ball.
The gear: Women wear little
protective gear during the game.
Mouthguards and eye goggles are
required, and some players choose
to wear gloves. For this reason, body
checks (striking opponents with
the crosse) is not allowed. In mens
lacrosse, the players are suited up in
more protective gear,such as helmets
and pads, so they are allowed to
make more physical contact, says
Dave Wiley, womens lacrosse coach.
The workout: Men gain upper body
strength that enables them to shoot
the ball up to 100 mph, Wiley says.
Lacrosse players must be able to
run quick sprints and use quick steps
to keep up with the pace of play. A
heavy emphasis used to be placed
on conditioning and weight training,
but now practices focus more on
sprinting and speed, Wiley says. At
times, players must sprint 70 to 80
yards.
Get involved: The mens and
womens teams accept new players
of all experience levels in the fall
preseason that begins in August.
Wiley says that some of his best
players began their lacrosse careers
in college. The offcial league season
begins Feb. 24.

lacrosse.

Im 21 and gettIng ready to graduate. Im stIll a vIrgIn. my gIrl frIends tell

mIChael, senIor
Michael, Im proud of
you for holding out for
that Cory/Topanga kind
of love. You say you want
to know if you should
just get over it so you
can live a life of sexual
fulfllment, but let me ask
you this: How fulflling
would sex be if what youre
really wanting is the Cory/
Topanga thing?
Of course you could just
get over it, but up until this
point youve chosen not
to, so do you really want
to lose your virginity just
because youre tired of
being a virgin? Doesnt
sound too romantic to me.
Twenty-one is still really
young, and I think if you
can be patient and wait
until you meet someone
you actually want to lose
your virginity to, because
you want to share sex with
her and not because you
just want to get rid of it,
then you will have a much
more fulflling experience.
The right woman will fnd
it endearing that youve
waited, because its hard to
fnd guys these days who
havent lost it to one-night
stands, friends or hookups,
like most of your friends.
Im a big believer in
doing whatever feels right
for you. If you truly feel
like you want to just lose
your virginity and youre
ready to have sex, then by
all means, go ahead. But
if thats what you truly
wanted, I dont think you
would be writing in to the
school newspaper asking
for a second opinion. That
tells me that at least a part
of you still wants to wait.
Dont do anything
until you can do it with
100-percent certainty
that its what you really
want. Until then, theres
always Priscillas and
ladies to grind with at
Abe and Jakes.

commend you for looking
past his criminal record
with the fashion police and
seeing the sweet guy on
the inside of those stained
sweats. Luckily, there are
a number of things you
can do to help him off Mr.

Directly telling him
hes a lousy dresser is not
the way to handle this.
Imagine if your boyfriend
told you that he thought
your fashion sense sucked.
What you hear is Im not
attracted to you, loser.
This is a situation that
calls for subtlety. Positive
reinforcement is your ticket.
That means, encourage
him when he picks out
something passable.Wow!
You look great tonight! Is
that new? Point out a shirt
on another guy and say,
Oh, you would look so hot
in that! And of course, you
could always volunteer to
take him shopping.
Through subtle
manipulation, you
should see some major
improvements.
Perhaps the best thing
you can do, however,
is to accept that while
he doesnt have to be

DUST MITES
that's disgusting
Dont be upset if you fnd yourself
climbing into bed alone, because each time
you slide between the sheets you can count
on being greeted by oval-shaped creatures
with hairy legs, no eyes and no teeth: dust
mites. Anywhere between 100,000 to 10
million of these mites occupy your mattress
alone, says Greg Burg, assistant director of
the division of biological sciences, referring
to a publication by the department of
entomology at Ohio State University.
The dust mites, not visible to the naked
eye, are so light that they and their feces are
often airborne, allowing humans to breathe
them in, Burg says. Its the inhalation of the
mites feces and shed skin that can cause
cases of asthma and allergic reactions.
Washing your sheets at a high
temperature each week and regularly
washing pillows and comforters are the
best ways to avoid breathing in the shower
of feces and mite carcasses that come
raining down on you each time you fuff
your pillow or walk across a carpet, says
Patricia Denning, student health physician
at Watkins Memorial Health Center.

the walk down the hill for
graduating seniors is 93 days
away. on May 20, the class of 2007
will become college graduates.
the prospect of graduating can
be overwhelming because of
the sheer number of possibilities
completing school allows.
if you dont already have the
next year of your life planned, take
some time to review your options.
With a little planning, youll be
prepared for your frst year as a
college graduate come May 21.
Burke went to work
Kevin Burke, 2006 graduate,
jumped right into an 8-to-5 one
month after he graduated. Burke
got his job through a contact at
his previous job and now dons the
title of product support engineer
at Perceptive software. Burke
says that he did a rsum review
and a mock interview through
the university Career Center, 110
Burge union, during his senior
year. the staff was helpful and he
got good feedback during the
mock interview, he says.
it wasnt too hard for me to
fnd a job in my desired feld, so
i didnt consider anything other
than working after i graduated.
Burke says. But people who dont
know what they want to do have
other options to give them time
to fgure it out instead of taking a
job doing something completely
random.
unlike Burke, many people
come to the center with no idea
of what they want to do, says
Melanie Privat, a career counselor
at the university Career Center.
Privat encourages students who
are unsure about their futures to
take advantage of the resources
available to them now because
breaking into the job market will
be more diffcult after graduation
when theyre out on their own.
there is no perfect job, Privat
says. thats a myth. a frst job
should feel good to you and be
a stepping stone to getting you
where you want to be. When
entering the workforce, ask
yourself can i do this job for a year
instead of can i retire here.
in addition to suggesting
college graduates remain realistic
about their frst job experiences,
Privat cautions against relying
on the internet to fnd a job. she
says that face-to-face networking
is important and more effective
because you never know when
someone you meet may like you
and create a position for you.
the university Career Center
offers extensive career education
and job search resources. services
include career assessments,
interviewing help, rsum and
cover letter workshops, job listings
and advising. For felds that are
diffcult to break into with only
a college diploma to your name,
the center also offers internships
and graduate school resources to
give you the edge you need. these
services include internship listings,
graduate school admissions and
application help, and personal

commitment than he was willing
to give at that time in his life.
The three friends used the
Internet and the advice of friends
to plan their trip to New Zealand.
The hardest thing about traveling
for long periods of time is getting
a work visa, Tisdale says. Other
than dealing with government
procedures, Tisdale says he is
enjoying the way of life in New
Zealand and learning a lot about
himself and the rest of the world.
Dont be afraid to live out
of a backpack, he says. In New
Zealand and much of the world
there are places to camp for
cheap or free. Its surprising how
little you need to travel in style.
Tisdale, Miller and Karlin have
been traveling and working
odd jobs in New Zealand since
October. The three friends
started out together but split
up when Tisdale and Karlin
worked at a spiritual retreat and
Buddhist center while Miller
went rock climbing. They later
reconvened at various locations
on the north and south islands.
They have hitchhiked, slept on
beaches and in strangers homes,
and explored the outdoors by
kayaking, rock climbing, hiking
and surfng. The three have year-
long work visas, so they plan on
staying through October.
This may seem like wandering,
but if you have the opportunity,
take it, says Patty Noland, career
development coordinator for
the School of Journalism.
If you have the desire, do it
now or you may regret it later
in life, Noland says. Traveling is
a great thing to do while youre
young and unattached. Its hard
later in life because you might
be married and have kids and
you wont be able to move to a
foreign country easily.
All students would beneft
from having some sort of
international experience on
their rsum, Noland says, but
the best thing to have is any
experience that is relevant to the
career path you want to take.
Studying, interning and
working abroad are important
experiences because they
put people in unfamiliar
environments that allow them
to grow and gain a better
worldview, she says. The world is
getting smaller, so it is important
to learn about other cultures,
Noland says. She adds that it is
great to be bilingual because
many companies are becoming
more internationally oriented.
Volunteer next year
If traveling around the
world with no plan seems
unreasonable but you still
want the benefts that cultural
experiences can give you, look
into volunteer programs such as
Teach For America and the Peace
Corps. Noland says that these are
both great programs that show
a willingness to give back to
those who are less fortunate, but
she warns that they are not for
everyone.
Teach For America is an
organization that is dedicated
to closing the achievement
gap between high- and low-
income regions by sending
recent college graduates to
teach students in low-income
areas of the country. Kit Brauer,
2004 graduate, spent two years
in rural North Carolina teaching
high school English.
Brauer says that Teach For
America helped
him focus his life
goals, strengthened
his work ethic
and improved his
management and
leadership skills. He
is currently getting
his masters degree
in public policy from
the University of
Southern California.
He hopes to help
low-income communities from
the top down because he has
experienced what it was like
to help at the grassroots level.
Brauer graduated from KU with
a bachelors degree in political
science and had only taken three
college English classes, but that
didnt stop him from applying to
Teach For America.
If youre unsure, try
something, Brauer says. Dont
be apathetic and just dip your
toe in the water and wait around.
Jump in.
Another volunteer
organization is the Peace Corps,
which sends volunteers to work
for two years in countries that are
in need of manpower. The Peace
Corps offers most of its positions
in community development,
teaching English and general
health care in developing
countries all over the world. She
knows of no other organization
that actually pays all of the
volunteers expenses (travel,
medical, living costs), provides
three months of training and
gives volunteers a lump sum
of more than $6,000 upon
completion of service, says Betty
Baron, Peace Corps coordinator
at the University Career Center.
The organization is for two
kinds of people:
those who know
what they want
to do next and for
those who have no
idea, Baron says.
It can either be
like an internship
or a way to realize
your dreams.
Volunteers have
to learn to do a lot
with a little. The
experience increases their
patience, fexibility and
creativity.
Baron recommends
coming in to talk to her at the
center if you are interested in
applying because, although
the deadlines are fexible,
the application process
is extensive and takes
more time than people
think.
Life after graduation
doesnt have to be scary.
There are plenty of possible
paths, so use the resources
available and fnd one that
appeals to you. Before you
know it, May 20 will be here, and
when people congratulate you
and ask what youre going
to do next, youll have an
answer.
Before graduation,
Make sure to...

your school to make sure
youve taken everything

On most days, Adam Seeger,
Ottawa sophomore, blends into
the bustling crowd on Mount
Oread. Seeger goes to class,
does his homework and plays
video games with friends in his
spare time. But on basketball
gamedays, he becomes a
different person.
With the help of ESPN,Seegers
overwhelming Jayhawk spirit, as
he hoists a larger-than-life Julian
Wright head above the student
section in Allen Fieldhouse, has
been broadcast nationwide.
The three-foot-tall head-
shaped cutouts are a recent
addition to a group of friends
who lived in Oliver Residence
Hall. The group, which calls itself
KU Heads for Victory, formed
to camp out for mens home
basketball games.
At each game you can see one
camper clutch the oversized ears
of junior guard Russell Robinson,
whose stern expression is
enough to scare the opposition
down the court, while another
camper vigorously waves the
head of junior forward Darnell
Jackson as he tries to distract an
opposing player during his free
throw shots. Seeger gives credit
to his friend Andrew Stanley,
Overland Park sophomore,
for the giant heads that now
characterize the group.
The heads have become
the pride of the friends, but
this season alone, the group
has replaced them three times
because of wear and tear to the
unconventional items. Replacing
the heads is costly because they
are printed and laminated at
OffceMax in Olathe.
A closer look at early editions
of the posters reveals thin white
lines dividing the features of
junior center Sasha Kaun and
those of most of the other players
into quarters. The campers
carefully assembled the signs
from individual pieces of paper
glued onto poster board.
After analyzing the condition
of the original posters, Stanley,
who is missing the remainder
of the season while studying
abroad in Costa Rica, struck a
deal with 23rd Street Brewery,
3512 Clinton Parkway. In
exchange for the restaurants
logo printed on the back of the
grinning mugs, the restaurant
paid for the newest set of high-
quality signs.
Matt Llewellyn, managing
partner of 23rd Street Brewery,
was excited about the idea of
helping the group produce their
signs when Stanley called. Ive
been to games and obviously
seen the heads. I was all over it.
I was absolutely all over it. Its
great exposure, Llewellyn says.
The group now parades the
heads of all 14 players, a few of
the coaches, KU broadcasting
legend Max Falkenstein and
even sports broadcasting great
Dick Vitale, who announced the
KUTexas A&M game for ESPNs
College Gameday on Feb. 3.
Even though the friends
no longer live under one roof,
Seeger has made time to attend
each mens game and diligently
sits, and sometimes sleeps, in
the feldhouse to ensure that the
best seats are reserved for him
and others in the KU Heads for
Victory camping group.
The 6 a.m. roll calls and four
hour shifts at the feldhouse are
just a part of the effort required
to get front-row seats, Seeger
says. Luckily for him, the 30
members of KU Heads for Victory
are reliable and dedicated, so the
group is typically able to place in
the top half of camping groups.
I remember Roys Boys, the
guy who dressed up as the
Dancing Nacho, the guy who
always wore the orange stocking
hat, and this guy who wore an

Why she likes it: Mayer
loves being close to
the action and helping

The early mornings are
rough on her, too, but
she would do anything
for good seats to all the
games, she says. After
the games, Mayer and

She says: Its really cool.
Its really fun being a

A look at the time-honored tradition of tipping.
When a group of 25
leather-clad bikers and their
girlfriends strolled into the
restaurant, Jessica Phan,
Overland Park junior, got
nervous. It was her first shift
at Stix, 1847 Village West
Parkway, a sophisticated
Hibatchi and sushi restaurant
near the Kansas Speedway.
She had years of experience
at Applebees under her belt,
but this was different. At Stix,
her dark hair had to be pulled
neatly out of her face, her
makeup kept fresh. She wore
all black, from her lacy shirt
down to her socks. The dress
code was strictly enforced; she
could be fred for carrying a red
or blue pen.
Phan took the groups order
and continued to serve them
alcohol and check on them. As
they drank and ate their way to
a $1,200 tab, they joked with
Phan and even asked to take
a picture with her. They then
paid the bill and left Phan a
$300 tip.
She returned to the table,
making sure the man paying
the bill meant to tip an extra 20
percent on top of the automatic
gratuity already fgured into
the bill. I would leave more if I
could, he replied.
Americans have been
leaving tips on tables since the
late 1800s. Restaurant patrons
expect to fgure a tip in with
their fnal bill, but the mystery
for many is just how much
is enough and exactly who
deserves a tip.
She works hard
for the money
Today most servers make
only $2.13 an hour, which is the
service industrys equivalent
of minimum wage. For this
reason, Audrey
Jensen, East
Grand Forks,
Minn., junior,
c ons i s t e nt l y
tips more than
20 percent for
good service.
Jensen, who
works at Mariscos, 4821 W. Sixth
St., knows frsthand how much
servers rely on tips. Sometimes
after taxes my paychecks will
come out to be $0, Jensen says.
Phan also tips well.If Ive had
phenomenal service,sometimes
Ill tip as much as 100 percent,
Phan says. My friends think Im
crazy, but I know what its like to
work as a server.
When Chris Chiles, Salina
sophomore, goes out to eat, he
tips according to the service he
receives. Chiles, who has never
been a server, says that he tips
as much as 30 percent for great
service, but if the service is just
average, he leaves 15 percent of
the bill.
Why so tipsy?
There are several theories
regarding why we tip so
religiously, says Leonard Green,
a psychologist at Washington
University who specializes in
researching the practice of
tipping.The main reason people
tip is that it is an established
social norm, Green says. We are
taught from a young age that
we are obliged
to tip.
People may
also leave a tip
as a sincere
token of
appreciation,
a c c o r d i n g
to Green.
Other motivations for tipping
include ensuring future good
service and to avoid seeming
like a freeloader.
Stiff and split?
One might feel guilty if one
doesnt tip, Green says.Thereve
been a couple of times when
Ive gotten horrendously bad
service and of course I still
tipped, Green says. What does
tipping have to do with good
service?
But not everyone feels too
guilty to stiff a waiter or leave
a marginal tip. Holly Hayworth,
Virginia Beach, Va., senior, was
once so unsatisfed with the
service at the Yacht Club, 530
Wisconsin St., that she tipped
only the change needed to
round her bill up to the next
dollar.
Hayworth says she usually
tries to tip well because both
of her sisters have been servers.
That night, however, it took 20
minutes for Hayworth to get
her bill, and then an additional
20 minutes to fx it because it
had been split incorrectly. It
was the worst service Id ever
had, she says.
Lizzie Post, great-great
granddaughter of etiquette
expert Emily Post and author
of the soon-to-be-published
How Do You Work This Life
Thing?, says that it is always
better to go ahead and leave a
15-percent tip for your waiter
and then tell the manager
of the restaurant that youve
had poor service. Youll feel
more satisfied that way, Post
says, and youll avoid ticking
someone off.
Post used to work as a
cocktail waitress herself and
says that she never leaves less
than a 20-percent tip.
Phan thinks everyone should
work in the service industry at
some point. Work two years in
the service industry and you
will understand life, Phan says.
You will understand effciency
and reading people.
Whether you follow Phans
advice or not, remember, your
tip is someone elses salary.

In Hannibal Rising, writer Thomas
Harris and director Peter Webber set
out to answer the question: How did
Hannibal Lector become so smart, so
charismatic, so evil?
They begin in 1940s Europe, where
young Hannibals family is murdered
by the Nazis his younger sister
is even eaten by group of stranded
SS soldiers. Years later, a teenaged
Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel) shacks up
with his aunt (Gong Li) and plots
revenge on the cannibals, developing
an abnormal appetite in the process.
As a flm, Hannibal Rising is
predictable, loaded with clichd
dialogue, insulting to the audiences
intelligence and monumentally
boring. As a piece in the Hannibal
Lector canon, its a different atrocity.
With other infnite elements, part
of the brilliance of The Silence of the
Lambs was the mystery surrounding
Dr. Lector. He was feared, respected
and strangely likable. Here, the
mystery falls away like the shroud
of the great and powerful Oz,
revealing nothing more than a banal,
monotonous medical student.
With any luck, this will be the last
gasp of the lackluster Silence sequels,
because I cant image a flm that
would leave a worse taste in viewers
mouths.

When I frst picked up Anais
Mitchells newest album, The
Brightness, I saw that it was
released on Ani DiFrancos
label, Righteous Babe Records.
I thought that this could either
go the way of Righteous Babe
artist Andrew Bird, whom I enjoy,
or of the queen bee herself, Ani.
Unfortunately, Mitchell resembles
the latter.
This album is full of intricate
fnger picking and crooning that
made me feel as though Anais
and her fans are part of that
special breed of women who
have an affnity for beads, incense
and large wooden things to hang
on their walls.
Aside from the music, her
voice is strange. Now, while Im
usually ready to toot the horns
of the Joanna Newsoms, CoCo
Rosies and Randy Newmans of
the world, I fnd this one hard to
enjoy. Perhaps its the context
that ruins it for me.
As for her lyrics, I found
them preachy and pretentious,
especially Song of the Magi,
in which she talks with a baby
Jesus about the Israeli-Palestinian
confict, though she did manage
to evoke some sentimentality
about my Appalachian boyhood
on Shenandoah.

The day my childhood house

burned was the frst time in my
life that I felt lost. I was 12 years
old, hitting puberty, and I had
just graduated from the only
school Id ever known. I already
felt like a rug had been pulled
out from under me. I was an
obsessive-compulsive kid who
worried about everything from
the germs in the swimming
pool to the angle of the pillows
on the futon in my moms family
room. The prospect of attending
junior high, where Id start to
take an active role in making
decisions for my life, was a little
frightening.
My mom and my stepdad are
realtors. Late July marks the end
of the busy real estate season
for them, so we planned a trip to
Alaska that summer.
A trip to the Last Frontier
would earn me lots of
bragging rights back in school,
so I was excited. As we waited to
board the plane, my mom made
me try to use the restroom one
last time. After washing my
hands so long that I needed
Vaseline to treat my chapped
hands and getting yelled at
by my stepdad for making
us almost miss our flight, we
headed on board one of the
three planes that would take
us to Anchorage.
We traveled through Alaska
in a small motor home. One
day after hiking on a glacier
and exploring a copper mine
in McCarthy, Alaska, we called
my stepdads mother, my Oma,
to check on everything back in
Lawrence. The pay phone was
literally a foot away from the
banks of a rushing glacial river.
When Oma found out who was
on the phone, she started crying
so loudly I could hear it a couple
of feet away, over the rush of
the river. She told us that our
house had burned down two
days before.
I began to cry. I thought
about my dog, Katy Lee, frst,
but when I found out she had
been safe outside in her pen,
I quickly moved on to my
own belongings: my yellow-
wallpapered room, my more
than 30 stuffed animals, my
Beanie Baby tent Id gotten for
my birthday only three weeks
before, and yes, my beloved
clothes. I had lost everything
I knew, and now we would
probably have to go straight to
the airport to fy home to sort
things out, losing the last week
of our vacation.
Later that evening, we
walked to the only restaurant in
McCarthy, a pizza parlor, and ate
dinner. To my relief, my parents
decided to stay and enjoy the
rest of our vacation before
facing the task ahead. They
saw no reason to rush home
because the house had already
burned.
We got back from the Kansas
City airport after dark, so we
waited until the next morning
to go see the house. I dont
remember many details except
that our kitchen, where the fre
had mysteriously started it
was electrical, but
the cause was
never identifed
had no foor.
All of the walls
were charred, my
beautiful yellow
wallpaper was
brown, and there
was a huge hole
burned through
the tile in my
bathtub.
All of my
clothes were out of my closet
because Oma had tried to get
the smoke stains, water damage
and smoke smell out of them
so Id have something to wear
on my frst days of school in
mid-August, but whe was
unsuccessful. The rest of our
furniture was there, and Katy
Lee was still living in the pen
out back. I have rarely smelled
anything like the smoky,
chemical smell of that house,
The fre, smoke and water
so badly damaged our house
that we salvaged only things
that had sentimental value,
like the pictures that had been
fused to their frames. We kept
the badly warped and melted
kitchen phone as a reminder. It
sat on top of our television for
the next eight years. We decided
not to rebuild, so
we sold the house
to a builder and
bought a new lot.
We stayed
with Oma for the
frst few weeks
of school before
we moved into
a signifcantly
smaller house
where we lived
until we could
build our new
house, which we moved into
the next summer. I wore hiking
boots and a khaki skirt on my
frst day of junior high and lived
out of a suitcase for three weeks.
I got a new wardrobe,
matching furniture and a
bedding set for the start of my
junior high years. I remember
my mothers anxiety about
sorting through everything
left to be salvaged. However, I
moved on quickly because I was
happy with all of my new things,
and I made new friends and got
involved in school. Within a year
or so, Id forgotten about the fre
almost entirely.
I realized I could live without
everything Id had since I was a
kid because I cared less about
being clean and organized
and stopped being so picky.
I became less attached to
material items and to houses
especially, and now have lived in
nine places during my life. Now,
its exciting to experience a new
place to live.
Although I still straighten
the pillows on the couch
sometimes, I learned early and
quickly to be more flexible.
Looking back, I was lucky
to lose my house because I
gained perspective on the
importance of material items.
Although a thought of the
fire grazes my mind probably
less than once a year, I would
have been a different person
without it.
When my house
burned down while
I was hiking on a
glacier, it changed
my outlook
and cooled my
perfectionism.
