REPEAT MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION 2011 SUBJECT- FLUID MECHANICS Read the Instructions Carefully: (i) Answer Question

No. 1 which is compulsory [1*8=8] (ii) Answer any Four from Questions 2-6. [8*4=32] Full Marks: 40 Time: 2 hr

Q1 a) For an incompressible flow, two velocity components given are: u = log (y2 + z2) and v = log (x2 +
z2). Find the third component such that they satisfy the continuity equation. b) A beaker of water is falling freely under the influence of gravity. Point B is on the surface and point C is vertically below B near the bottom of the beaker. What is the value of the pressure at the Point B and point C? c) A mercury-water manometer has a gauge difference of 500mm (difference in elevation of menisci). What will be the difference in pressure? d) On the suction side of a pump a gauge shows a vacuum pressure of 0.35 bar . Express this pressure in terms of absolute mercury head in meter. e) a pressure gauge 7.0 m above the bottom of the tank containing a liquid reads 64.94kPa; another gauge at a height 4.0 m reads 87.53 kPa. Compute the specific weight of the fluid. f) a tank has in its side a very small horizontal cylinder fitted with a frictionless piston. The head of the liquid above the piston is h and the piston area a, the liquid having a specific weight . What is the force that must be exerted on the piston to hold it in position against hydrostatic pressure? g) A circular annular plate bonded by two concentric circles of diameter 1.2 m and o.8 m is immerged in water with its plane making an angle 45 degree with the horizontal. The centre of the circle lies is 1.625m below the free surface. What will be the total pressure force on the face of the plate? h) The depth of the fluid is measured in vertically up z direction. How static pressure varies with in the fluid?

Q-2 An open rectangular tank 5m*4m*3m high containing water up to a height of 2m is

accelerated horizontally along the longer side. Determine the maximum acceleration that can be given without spilling of water. Calculate the percentage of water spilt over if the acceleration is increased by 20%. [3+5]

Q-3a) Calculate the pressure in kPa at A, B, C, D as shown in the figure-1

What will be the relation between b and h for stable condition? [4] 4-a) A vertical lamina of 2m*2m is submerged in water with its upper edge 1 m below the surface. Locate a horizontal line on the lamina such that the force on the upper portion of the line equals the force on the lower portion. [4] b) A cylinder of diameter 150 mm and length 120mm, weighing 90N, slides down in a lubricated pipe. The clearance between the cylinder and the pipe is .025 mm. if the cylinder is observed to decelerate at 0.60 m/s2 when the speed is 6m/s, find the viscosity of oil? [4] 5) Gate AB, as shown in the figure-3, is 7m wide into the plane of paper. Compute the force F required to prevent rotation about hinged at B. Neglect atmospheric pressure. [5+3]

6-a) what is the weight of the loaded barge floating in water as shown in the fig-4? The barge is 7 m in width. [4] b) A wooden rectangular block of length of L is made to float in water with its axis vertical. The centre
of gravity of the floating body is 0.15L above the centre of buoyancy. What is the specific gravity of the wooden block? [4]
