"Apple will not fall behind."

The world lost a legend yesterday. Depending on how much you love your iPhone, we also lost a visionary, a genius or maybe even a deity. Since I already wrote a kind of eulogy for Steve Jobswhen he stepped down as Apple CEO in August, Im going to do what no one wants to do right now and talk about Apples stock. Should you buy it or should you let it go?

Granted, Im no economist or stock picker. I have a degree in economics, but these days, so do the greeters at Walmart. Leaving that aside, according to several news articles, stock-pickers arent any more accurate than regular folks throwing darts at a dart board (Im excluding mathematical genius black-box traders), so I think I have just as much of a say as anyone else. Lets look at some of the more layman reasons why you should buy or sell Apple securities in the face of this tragedy.

Option One: Sell, Sell, Sell

Lets look at the facts: Apple hasnt always made the best in the way of computing machinery. Jobs was first fired from Apple in 1985. He was around for the first Macintosh computer, but the old standby that were familiar with, the Apple II, was in 1987, years after he was gone, and, besides, it was using Motorola technology. He didnt return until 1997, and a year later, Apple introduced the iMac, described at the time as the gold standard of desktop computing by Forbes magazine. In the middle, it kind of floundered around making alternative machines. It may have been faster, but, hey, in the Windows 95 era, if it didnt run Windows, it didnt matter. Despite that, Jobs return in 97 marked a new era, one where Apple would consolidate functions and focus on producing the best hardware possible. I think we all remember the commercials where Intel announced that it was working with Apple. For anyone remotely interested in technology, that was a big deal. Jobs was there for that. Beyond the early renaissance years, he was a driving force for the company. He pioneered the iPod, iPhone and even that cursediPad. Without him, I dont know where Apple will go. It managed to create a niche that didnt exist with the iPad, but that was its last remarkable foray into the market. Im interested to see where the company goes without Jobs, and in a lot of ways, the outlook is bleak. He may have been one of the greatest strategic thinkers in recent times (and this is coming from someone whos a management consultant by trade), and his successor has big shoes to fill. Without Jobs and his visionary angle, the company could be doomed.

Option Two: Buy, Buy, Buy

To say Apple is dead is like saying Disney was dead when Walt himself died. The company went under, and chaos ensued. Oh, wait, it didnt! You mean, Disney produced and released some of its most profitable films after Walts death? Crazy. Well, you know what? Apple is no different. Yes, its most visionary leader left this mortal coil. You know who didnt? Every engineer and developer currently working for the company. And unless Google starts offering even more ridiculous comp packages (and it wont -- I was once a compensation consultant), theyll still be there. The point is, Jobs built a ship that can run on

autopilot. Apple may have lost Steve, but it has an army or analysts and consultants keeping tabs on whats going on in the market. Apple will not fall behind. It's so vertically integrated it would make your head spin. Jobs designed it so that the loss of one means nothing. The ship steams on. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to see where consumer behavior is headed, and just in case it does, Apple could employ them, too. Jobs set a precedent, and that spirit will outlive him in exponential terms. So, buy or sell: What do you do? Me, personally, Id buy. For the everyman, Apples products arent going to spontaneously combust. They work, they work well, and they will continue to work. As much as I am opposed to the smartphone (an article yet to be printed/will never be printed because too much ink has already been spilled on the subject), I continue to marvel at what Jobs accomplished with the iPhone. Then again, in the long run, its all about investors faith in the new CEO. In the meantime, though, I can say with confidence: Apple aint going nowhere.
