Its that time of year again are we ready for some FOOTBALL???? The Program below shows that LSHS football did continue after losing our boys from the Class of 57, but Im sure they were missed. Took the Tigers one game (against Higginsville) to get going without us, but I heard they had a pretty successful season after that. They WON this Dads Night game against Olathe! The following program comes to you courtesy of Dees Drug Store, The Farmers Trust Co. AND Bob Hovermale 58 . . .
(if you left click and then drag the corners of the program you can make the names larger and easier to read space limitations wouldnt let me do this. Works on any picture)

My niece, Mary, posted this USA map on her Facebook page . . . I thought it was pretty cool for this time of year. She LOVES football, just like the rest of my family
Hello from sunny California where the days are in the 90s, but the evenings are in the 50s. On the National Neighborhood GTG Night last week, we all had to put sweaters on by sundown. I love it! All of us were touched by the death of our Classmate, Ted Adkins. As shown in his bio sent out by Marilyn last week, Ted was not only an affable and intelligent fellow, but he was also quite the professional in his field of radio communications. Those of us who stayed in close touch with him over the past ten years were blessed by his humor, courage and his willingness to share his ills and the treatments thereof. We shall all miss him. After conferring with Karen, we are in the process of nominating him for the Hall of Fame. Karen said that Ted would be honored, and she will be helping with the application. You might keep the latter part of April open, as I feel certain we will need to attend his induction dinner! More on this later. Last month I mentioned I was starting some research on the Peace Corps and the Paul D. Coverdell World Wise Schools program and Pauls involvement with them. The first thing I learned was the high regard for Paul held by each of the people with whom I have talked in this endeavor. I have been sent an amazing packet of materials. A duplicate set is being sent to Lee Summit. It is my hope that District R-7 will choose to participate in the World Wise Schools project. There also is a program to assist Peace Corps volunteers who have a desire to go to graduate school in one of approximately 20 disciplines. This program is named Coverdell Fellows. Approximately 70 graduate schools have a Coverdell Fellows Program. The University of Missouri and UMKC have the program. MU gives Fellows $12,000.00 per year in addition to waiving tuition and providing health care benefits. It seems to me that the Nation remembers Paul well and this little ole country boy has made quite a name for himself and, for those in the know, for the Class 1957, LSHS and for Lees Summit, as well. By the next time I report, I shall give a full account of the nuptials of our 21 year old granddaughter and her young man, Mike. This is a tear and cheer event, if ever there was one. See you next month. Ed

Received from Little Jim Brockman after the July NL went out telling of the Colorado fires . . . Hi Marilyn, I just read the Hi-Life and thought you would like to know that the fires
just missed Warren (58) & Sharon Brown in Colorado Springs. They were in Indiana visiting their daughter and did not realize that the fire came very close to their house. I just got off the phone with Sharon as Warren was not home. I also wanted to let you know I am flying to Phoenix on Thursday to see my dad. I will give you an update when I get back to Oregon. "Little" Jim
I received a postcard from Judy (Barrett) Damsgaard who is Enjoying the hot Danish summer with (her husband) Bamsa, friends & family. She didnt say when they would be returning, but apparently in Sept/Oct because she mentioned that when they return she will be campaigning in the Presidential election scene. And the following note from Dee Ann (Ott) Herde . . . The sale of our home closed on Monday, Aug 6th, at 8:30 a.m. and we left Lee's Summit about 10 a.m. Arrived at our daughter Sandra's in Derwood, Maryland, on Wednesday night. Our motorhome is parked in front of their home while we take a two-week rest. We plan on leaving Sandra's August 19th and taking our RV to Punta Gorda, Florida, to find our new home." Eve (Cook) Hoygaard reports . . .
Summer 2012 in Denver has been one of the hottest on record and, like in so many areas, it is compounded by the drought that has also been a factor in the forest fires we have experienced. I expect Garry G is the expert on the fires! We could see the smoke at times. We are looking forward to fall and hopefully more moisture. When the humidity is less than 10%, it is dry! Bill and I just spent a week at a working ranch (not to be confused with a dude ranch) SW of Gunnison CO. We have done this for a number of years and really enjoy getting to see friends old and new plus extended family. This year the age range was 7 months to 87 years. The cabins are very basic (an example of this is you provide your own personal paper products!) but are clean and comfortable. No cell coverage. No TV. No internet. Other pluses include beautiful blue skies and clear star-filled cool nights. It takes about 50 minutes to drive to pavement . . . 18 miles. We got to herd cattle one day . . . in our SUV on the dirt road when we encountered two cowboys moving cattle to another pasture. "Just drive slowly, M'am, the cows will move out of your way." Not quite true but the delay was fairly short. The ranch family is very nice and we are booked for 2013 dates. We are planning a driving trip to Idaho this month ... will return via Yellowstone National Park. Might go into Canada for a day or two. A main purpose of the trip is to see Bill's granddaughter before she starts classes for her second year of college. Fall is looking busy for us and I hope that includes a 2012 Gathering of the Colorado Chapter of the LSHS Class of'57! Eve
I, along with other friends of his, received a message from Harold Shewmaker saying We are taking a long trip to the Northeast and down the East coast. Even during trips like this, friends are able to keep track of each other thru Facebook when you have the fancy phone like Harolds wife Carolyn has. Shes been posting pictures .. lots of pictures .. along the way. Looks like they are having a wonderful time! After the first group of pictures Carolyn posted, I made the comment Good pictures! Have fun ... travel SAFE! A little later I saw a comment made by Marilyn (Mitchell 57) Pruyn: Love the pics--except the one where Harold pinched the baby! I got such a laugh out of that, I wanted to give you all a chance to enjoy it, too . . .

Health Updates
The promised update on Mr. Brockman from his son, Jim (7/26) . . .
He is very frail and has lost a lot of weight. I think he may be going into assisted living in the next few days. His spirit is great and he wanted me to tell everyone THANKS FOR THE BIRTHDAY CARDS!!!!! Most were from the class of 1957, but there were probably 15 cards from other classes. I read every one of them, as he had saved them for me. Keep him in your prayers, Jim
Great idea from Eve Hoygaard: I hope we will have his (Mr.Bs) new address available and
cards (post cards with interesting photos are easier to look at and display) are welcome to most residents of assisted living facilities. It shows other residents that this person has many people who care about them . . . and, the staff see this too. It only takes a few minutes to send a post card and I can assure you it will be viewed by many. I wish him well.
Arthur Gail Smith, 71, Adrian, Mo., died July 30, 2012, at St. Joseph Medical Center. Memorial visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian. Memorials to the American Cancer Society c/o Atkinson Funeral Home.
The following comments were made after I sent out the Hi-Life II Special Edition and posted Teds obituary on Facebook in our LSHS Grads from the 50s and 60s Group :
Nancy (Todd 59) Hasselbach: I was sadden to read the post of Marilyn and Ed. Ted was a regular for great times with us all at the Lake. I hope Karen finds strength from all of our prayers and Ted is comforted by God's grace.
Marlene (Siler 56) Larson: Sorry to hear about another of your classmates. He has put up a good battle.
Marcia (Fields) Russell: This is an email Ive been dreading getting. Have expected it but, nevertheless, have hoped it wouldn't come. I expect everyone feels the same. Pat Damsgard Hoglund: So sad to get this report. He put up a gallant fight and we'll all remember his tremendous spirit and Karen's loving care all along. We should all be so lucky to have a loving mate like that. Hopefully we all do! They are both in our prayers. Our God cans are getting very full.
Terry Reynolds: I'm so sorry to hear this, I was praying that the experimental drugs would help him. My little sister went through this process and the results ended the same I'm sorry to say. Teddy will be missed. Our prayers go out to Karen, we know the fight she has been in. Eve Hoygaard: I remember hearing the name Ted Atkins (in Denver) on KIMN radio in the early '60's and wondering if it was LSHS classmate. He was very popular as I recall. He will be missed by many. Thanks, Marilyn, for your very sensitive message to advise us of his death. Lila(Warren58)Roasa: Ted, sending my sympathy to the family. Sure had some fun times at LSHS. Harold Lee Shewmaker: RIP Ted. We are losing way too many of our classmates.
Gary Peel (60s ??): Same Ted Atkins that was a DJ in K.C.? I remember the time I was working at Johnny Ray's, when I was a junior in high school, and he came into the kitchen and thanked me for the chili I cooked that night...I was impressed he took the time. RIP Ted, you brought a lot of wonderful moments in my young life, listening to you on the car radio. I remember when he told the joke comparing a girl friend to a screen door, it got him some time off the air, but it was so funny I laughed myself silly. He had a great sense of humor, and was always so quick with the adlibs. He'll be sorely missed. :( Lila (Warren 58) Roasa: Yes Gary, Ted was a DJ- I will never forget when he changed jobs and went to KUDL he said on the radio, "Can't tell you what station I'm going to but if you cuddle (KUDL) a little closer I might." He sure was a good DJ, fit his personality to a tee. Paula (Young 59) Morris I'm saddened at this news. A fun friend. A good man.
Jean (Lush) Staub: So sorry to learn of Teds death. Thanks for the special edition and for including his bio. Photos from 57 Reflector
As you can see from these pictures, his being Captain Showbiz started at LSHS !

"There are several things to be aware of ... Gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car. "There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police Department where gangs are placing a car seat by the road...with a fake baby in it....waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby. Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the person -- woman -- will be dragged into the woods, beaten and raped, and usually left for dead. If it's a man, they're usually beaten and robbed and maybe left for dead, too. DO NOT STOP FOR ANY REASON!!! DIAL 9-1-1 AND REPORT WHAT YOU SAW, BUT DON 'T EVEN SLOW DOWN.
WARNING #2:
"IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSHIELD, DO NOT STOP TO CHECK YOUR CAR, DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPERS AND DO NOT SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY, AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5%, AND YOU ARE THEN FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF THESE CRIMINALS. THIS IS A NEW TECHNIQUE USED BY GANGS, SO PLEASE INFORM YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES. THESE ARE DESPERATE TIMES AND THESE ARE UNSAVORY INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL TAKE DESPERATE MEASURES TO GET WHAT THEY WANT."
WARNING # 3:
It was about 1:00 p.m. In the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her to never pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called 112 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. Especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going on to a safe place. * I never knew about the 112 Cell Phone feature. I tried it on my AT&T phone & it said, "Dialing Emergency Number." Speaking to a service representative at Bell Mobility confirmed that 112 was a direct link to State trooper info.
