: Shunt active power filter for Power Quality

Literature Review :
The increasing use of solid state power conversion equipment (rectifier ,inverters, cycloconveters) and other power electronic type devices (voltage controllers, motorSpeed controllers) on distribution system is causing utilities to become much more concern about voltage & current harmonics, the problem associated with this are given in the IEEE press book of Math J, Bollem understanding Power Quality problems. Thus it is necessary to overcome these problems. Passive filters are conventional solutions to mitigate harmonics but the limitations of passive filters for compensating has made active efilter more attractive was explained in Kimbark E.W. Direct current Transmission, New York , Welly 1971.Active filters are work together with by means of controllers & controllers may be microcontrollers based or DSP based controllers. In case of feature extraction is totally based on pq theory by H.Akagi,Y.kanazawa and A.Nabae Generalized theory of instantaneous reactive power and its application,Transaction of the IEE Japan Part B,vol 103 ,no.7,pp 483490,1983. As a suitable & best controlled technique for active power filter is hysteresis band controller according to Murat kale & Engin ozdemir,in Harmonic and reactive power compensation with shunt active power under non ideal mains voltage at electric power system research magazine 74(2005) 363-370p.thus this method is selected for next work.

Project Overview ( Main objective of Project ):

As a power system contains non linear loads and creates harmonic problems, by means of using shunt active power filter (APF) is a device that is connected in parallel to the load .APF cancels the reactive and harmonics currents drawn by the load so as to make

supply current sinusoidal .Active power filter play a vital role in present day liberalized energy market. The Active filter are explored for executing different power conditioning function simultaneously along with harmonic elimination due to increase in non linear load at the point of common coupling. The aim of this work is to study the control strategy for active power filter i.e. hysteresis band controller. More importantly to study the pq based instantaneous power theory based shunt active power filter which is predominantly taken as a subject of interest. The shunt active power filter is investigated through Matlab/Simulink simulation under the non linear load condition.

Scheme of Implementation/ Methodology :

In this work three phase voltage source is connected to the non linear load, which is thyristor bridge rectifier with resistive load. According to Akagi etal in 1983 ,he proposed the generalized theory of the instantaneous reactive power in three phase circuits .It is based in instantaneous values in three phase power system with or without neutral wire and it is valid for steady state or transitory condition. Thus by using clark transformation the currents in the three phases a,b,c, transform in to --0 coordinates & after that reference compensating currents are calculated in the --coordinates & feed to the supply back. Which compensate the harmonics currents and try to remove the harmonics. Finally by means of hysteresis band controller gate pulse signals for inverter thyristors are obtained to provide compensating currents.

Layout & design of Set-up :

The layout setup consist of power source which is three phase AC voltage source which feeds to resistive thyristor based rectifier. Ica*,Icb*,Icc* are reference currents Ica,Icb,Icc are compensation currents Vc,Vb,Va & Ic,Ib,Ia are signals provided to controller.
