The northern coastline of Cuba, on Saturday afternoon, was feeling the brunt of Isaacs weather. Havanas Meteorological Institute reported that the storm touched down in Maisi, a municipality east of Guantanamo Saturday afternoon. Radio Baracoa reported that two homes in the islands eastern most city of 48,000 had collapsed and that the storm surge had thrown up a lot of debris on its seaside Malecon boulevard and nearby streets. But the storms drama fizzled at the U.S. Navy base at Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, where the military had scrapped this months Sept. 11 terror trial hearings and evacuated staff and observers from the crude compound called Camp Justice. The bad weather did not materialize here as tropical storm

Isaac turned away and headed up the East coast of Cuba, said Navy Capt. Robert Durand, the detention center spokesman. The base did not report any damage or injuries in what amounted to a splash of summertime rain. Soldiers embarked on late-morning runs around the 45-square-mile base, while the base commander ordered the cafeterias reopened in time for 5:30 p.m. Saturday supper. Forecasters believe the systems jaunt over Cuba will be brief and allow the storm more time to strengthen in the warm waters of the Florida Straits. Acquiring an ID also costs money, which may stop lowincome families from getting the necessary documents. A new voter identification law in Pennsylvania has been found to prevent 9 per cent of minorities from voting this election, the Pennsylvania Department of State announced. According to research by the Philadelphia City Paper, almost half of Philadelphia voters and 1.6 million of the states voters may be banned from partaking in the election as a result of lacking the proper identification. If South Carolinas new voter ID law passes, it will be among 11

states that require photo identification at polling booths. Supporters of the law argue that stricter laws would prevent voter fraud, but there is little concrete evidence of voter fraud having occurred in the past. South Carolinas photo ID measure is a solution in search of a problem. Credible studies show that one is more likely to be struck by lightning than to perceive an instance of in-person voter fraud, Ryan Haygood, a lawyer at the NAACPs Legal Defense Fund, told CNN. The [upcoming] trial will make clear that the states proposed photo identification measure will have a significant impact on its minority voters. In February, the State Election Commission identified several cases of voter fraud during the 2010 elections. But upon closer examination, five out of six cases offraud were a result of clerical or poll worker errors, such as marking the wrong voters name in the poll book, National Public Radio reported. The sixth case

was marked fraudulent because the voter had sent in an absentee ballot and died shortly thereafter. Opponents of Pennsylvanias law found that not a single case of alleged voter fraud had been prosecuted or investigated before the law went into effect. Regardless of the insufficient evidence to prove the necessity of photo ID, the law was passed. Some public officials claim that if South Carolina approves the new law, the results of the 2012 presidential election could be significantly altered. The legislative change stands to block tens of thousands of potential voters from casting their ballots. Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney smiles as his wife Ann Romney speaks during a campaign event at the Exhibit Edge building in Chantilly, Virginia May 2, 2012. Credit: Reuters/Benjamin Myers By Sam Youngman POWELL, Ohio| Sat Aug 25, 2012 11:48am EDT (Reuters) - Republican officials shuffled the speaking lineup at their convention in Tampa next week to ensure that presidential candidate Mitt Romney's wife Ann will reach a prime-time television audience when she speaks to the gathering. Ann Romney will now speak on Tuesday night after it became clear that television networks were not planning to show her Monday-night address before a prime-time audience. Romney's wife has proved to be one of his most popular assets in his run for the White House against President Barack Obama, helping to humanize a candidate who has consistently been criticized as out of touch. New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez was originally scheduled

to speak on Tuesday night in the slot now given to Ann Romney, but officials said her speech has been put back until Wednesday. Officials in Tampa said that U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida will not be moved to another slot, one outside of prime time, as some had said. Rubio had offered his speaking slot to Ann Romney. "Senator Rubio was incredibly gracious to offer his speaking slot to Mrs. Romney, and we thank him for his kind offer," Matt Rhoades, Romney's campaign manager, said. "However, he will remain the last speaker in prime time on Thursday night before Governor Romney accepts the nomination," he said. Romney is scheduled to arrive in Tampa on Thursday and formally accept the Republican nomination that night to run against Obama on Nov 6. What $3.9 billion Verizon/cable spectrum deal means to you (FAQ)

Marguerite Reardon (CNET News)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 1:57:49 PM

The Federal Communications Commission just gave the final approval for Verizon Wireless to purchase the biggest hunk of spectrum outside of a full company merger in U.S. history. So what's it all mean? In December, Verizon proposed buying 20 MHz of wireless spectrum from a consortium of cable operators known as SpectrumCo, which included Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Communications. It also struck a separate but similar deal to buy spectrum from cable operator Cox Communications. The deal was controversial for two main reasons. First, it would have allowed Verizon to effectively double its spectrum holdings in the AWS-1 block. Many feared this would give Verizon too much control of a scarce resource at a time when other wireless operators without as strong a spectrum position also need access airwaves to deploy competing 4G services. The second issue many consumer advocates had with the deal concerned a commercial arrangement that would allow cable operators to resell and

market Verizon Wireless services and also allow Verizon to resell and market cable service. This concerned regulators and consumer advocates because it might kill competition in the wired broadband market. After working closely with regulators, Verizon struck a deal with T-Mobile to sell it some spectrum, alleviating those concerns. And it worked with the Department of Justice to alter its commercial agreement to help protect broadband competition. While regulators say they are satisfied with the protections put in place via conditions placed on the deal, what does it all really mean for consumers? What is likely to change in the near term as well as in the long term? CNET has put together this FAQ to help explain what you can expect. Now that the FCC has approved the deal between Verizon and the SpectrumCo cable companies what happens next? Are there any other approvals necessary? The FCC was the last regulatory agency that had to sign off on the deal. The Department of Justice announced its support of the amended deal last week. Now Verizon and the cable companies are free to proceed with their transaction. See also:

The coming wireless spectrum apocalypse and how it hits you Wireless spectrum: What it is, and why you should care What does this mean for consumers? Will anything change right away? There are several components to the deal as I mentioned in the introduction. There is the spectrum sale of 20 MHz of Advanced Wireless Services spectrum. And a commercial arrangement in which the companies will resell and market each others services. On the spectrum front, consumers won't likely see any changes right away. But consumers may start to see joint marketing and the reselling of services from all the companies involved relatively soon. There are no restrictions on how soon these new marketing plans can go into effect. When Verizon purchased Alltel, those customers were moved from Alltel's network to Verizon Wireless. Will something similar happen to consumers with this deal? No. The spectrum that Verizon bought from the cable operators is unused. Cox and the SpectrumCo cable operators bought this spectrum in the 2006 FCC auction, and they never used it. Verizon had also bought some spectrum in the auction, and as

part of the deal with the FCC to get the SpectrumCo transaction approved, Verizon agreed to sell some of its existing spectrum assets to T-Mobile. Verizon also was not yet using this wireless spectrum. So there are no subscribers currently on that spectrum that will be transferred to T-Mobile's network. What are the long term implications of Verizon getting this additional spectrum? Within seven years, 70 percent of the people living in the area where Verizon now owns that AWS spectrum will have access to Verizon's 4G LTE network. Many of these customers likely already have access to Verizon's 4G LTE network, but the addition of this spectrum will ensure that Verizon has enough network capacity to handle heavy data traffic loads. So far, Verizon has used its 700 MHz spectrum to build its 4G LTE network, which is available in more than 370 markets, covering nearly 75 percent of the U.S. population. With the FCC estimating that the industry demand for mobile data by 2015 will be 25 to 50 times greater than it was in 2010, it will be very important to Verizon and other wireless carriers to have enough spectrum to keep up with demand for data-intensive activities like video chatting, streaming live

video, downloading movies or large work files and more, on smartphones and tablets. The lower frequencies of the 700MHz Verizon is currently using for its network are good for establishing coverage. Lower frequencies can travel longer distances and penetrate through obstacles better than higher frequency spectrum. But higher frequency spectrum, such as the AWS spectrum Verizon acquired, offers more capacity. Signals at these frequencies don't travel as far, but they can pack in more data than the lower frequencies. What this means for Verizon is that using a combination of lower frequency spectrum with higher frequency spectrum allows the carrier to offer good coverage indoors and outdoors and in rural areas. But the higher frequency spectrum also allows it to add additional capacity in dense areas like cities, where networks can get congested. So the bottom-line is that this ultimately benefits Verizon Wireless customers, because it means that Verizon will be able to keep up with demand for 4G wireless services. That said, I wouldn't count on Verizon lowering prices or allowing WHAT page 13

people unlimited access to the network for a low flat-rate. Those days are over. I've heard that if this deal goes through Verizon will have too much spectrum and thus control the market. Is that true? This deal does give Verizon an additional 20 MHz of wireless spectrum. And the company already owned about 20 MHz of the same type of spectrum. But in order to win approval from regulators to complete the deal, Verizon offered to sell some spectrum to T-Mobile. While Verizon and T-Mobile struck this deal independently, the FCC was pleased with the outcome and made the closing of the deal with T-Mobile a requirement in approving the SpectrumCo spectrum license transfers. The FCC does have a limit to how much spectrum one carrier can own in any given market. That limit stands at one-third of the total spectrum ownership or about 145 MHz per carrier in most local markets. Paul Gallant, an analyst with Guggenheim, points out in his note to investors Friday, that the FCC appears to have retained the 145 MHz percompany limit. Many had thought the FCC might lower the cap. Still, the FCC did require some concessions even though Verizon had crossed the one-third spectrum threshold. In fact, Gallant notes that the Verizon/ SpectrumCo deal was below the cap in 90 percent of U.S. markets, and yet the agency still required Verizon to swap some spectrum

with T-Mobile. And it put other conditions on the deal too. It is requiring Verizon to allow roaming from other carriers on its data network. And it required a speedier build-out timeline on the spectrum. Why did the FCC require conditions even though it didn't meet the spectrum cap? Gallant explained in his note that "the FCC's main rationale for spectrum divestiture was that the AWS-1 block was one of the last greenfield sources of spectrum, so Verizon Wireless's control of more than 20 MHz of AWS in most cities would impair LTE competition and potentially lead to higher wireless prices nationwide." What effect might these conditions have on the market? The fact that the FCC didn't change the spectrum cap means that other large companies may try to merge or purchase large blocks of spectrum as well. There has been a lot of talk about AT&T buying wireless spectrum from satellite TV provider Dish. And there's always a rumor that surfaces every few months that Sprint and T-Mobile may be considering a merger. The FCC has indicated through the Verizon/ SpectrumCo deal that it's willing to approve these mega spectrum transfers. But there will likely be conditions, even if the combined entities don't officially cross the spectrum cap threshold. The FCC also said in its order that it will soon start a rulemaking procedure to examine the

spectrum concentration cap it has in place. The FCC would like to make sure that its spectrum framework is "clear and predictable" for companies who may be considering deals. And that is what the rulemaking will address. The FCC expects to open the rulemaking in the next few months and conclude it in mid 2013. This means that there could be deals announced within the next year before new rules are in place since the FCC has indicated that the one-third spectrum cap is still useful in evaluating deals. But companies may have to concede to other conditions to get the deals done. The result for consumers is that there is likely to be more consolidation over the next six months to a year. And depending on how the FCC reworks the spectrum caps, there could be even more deals a year from now. Is consolidation good or bad for consumers? This is the magic question. And the answer you will likely get to this question often depends on who you ask. In general it's believed that competition is better for consumer because it keeps prices low and spurs innovation. But how much competition is necessary to gain these effects? A free-market proponent would say that it's silly and wasteful for several companies to build multiple infrastructures to essentially offer the same services. They would argue that fewer players actually use the

industry resources more efficiently, which ultimately benefits consumers. But people on the other side of this argument say that reducing the number of competitors often leads to higher prices for consumers and less innovation. Even if fewer companies can use resources more efficiently, it doesn't mean that those costsavings will be passed on to consumers. Often, they are profits given to shareholders. At the very least, market consolidation means less choice for consumers. And the fewer choices consumers have in providers, the less leverage they may have when dealing with a company that is providing subpar service. But the reality is that building and running a wireless network is a capital intensive business. It depends on an expensive and scarce resource: wireless spectrum. And the truth is that not every competitor that is in the market today will survive, nor should they be propped up to survive via regulation. So there will be some consolidation. But the function of the regulator ie the FCC is to make sure that the policies in place are fair to all competitors regardless of size. And it also must work to ensure that enough competition exists to benefit consumers. It's a balancing act for the FCC and other regulators. If the market consolidates too much, regulators will likely have to be more involved. But if enough

competition remains, the regulator can use a much lighter touch. What about the commercial arrangements between Verizon and the cable companies? Does this mean I can forget about competition in the home broadband market? Both the FCC and the Department of Justice were concerned about these commercial deals. In the original agreement, cable operators would have been allowed to resell Verizon Wireless service and Verizon Wireless would have been able to resell and market cable TV, broadband, and voice services from the cable companies, even in markets where Verizon also sells its Fios TV and broadband service. Regulators said they felt allowing Verizon to market and resell cable services in the same markets where it is offering Fios would hurt competition and might provide a disincentive for Verizon to push its own services. So the DOJ worked out a deal with Verizon and the cable companies in which it's now forbidden for Verizon or the cable operators to resell each other's home broadband services in the Verizon Fios territory. But these companies can still market and resell services in places where Verizon only offers DSL service. One of the conditions the FCC put on the deal is that Verizon will be required every six months to file reports with the agency WHAT page 16

about the DSL competitive market. And the FCC also established a system in which parties could file a complaint with the FCC if they thought the companies were acting in an anticompetitive manner. Consumer advocates think the DOJ and FCC should have done more to protect competition in wireline broadband. "While (the FCC's complaint system) may allow parties to bring attention to anticompetitive or otherwise illegal conduct, it does nothing to affirmatively prevent it," Gigi Sohn, head of Public Knowledge, said in a statement. "The JOE (joint marketing agreement) is still a vehicle that empowers former competitors to suppress new rivals. The FCC should have protected competition by blocking the commercial agreements altogether." So what does this really mean for consumers? It means that if you are a Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox or Bright House cable subscriber, you will soon be able to get wireless phone service that

uses Verizon's network but is branded from one of the cable operators. You will also be able to subscribe to any of these cable services from Verizon Wireless stores, so long as they are not in an area that is also selling Verizon's Fios service. There is a chance that the cable companies may cut you a break on the wireless service. And perhaps there will be promotions that save you money or you subscribe to cable service via a Verizon Wireless store. But many consumer advocates fear that what's really been allowed to happen here is that in the few places where Verizon vigorously competed with the likes of Comcast and Time Warner, it will no longer push so hard to compete. And that is bad news for consumers. In fact, far too many U.S. consumers don't have enough competition when it comes to broadband. And now consumer advocates fear that even with some of the restrictions put in place by the FCC and the DOJ that Verizon will have little incentive to build beyond its

existing Fios footprint, where it could bring true broadband competition to millions more Americans. In all fairness, Verizon has never said it would continue to expand Fios beyond the existing footprint. And even without this commercial arrangement, it's unclear if Verizon would have ever found it cost effective enough to continue building the fiber to the home infrastructure. Still, if I were keeping a scorecard of pluses and minuses for competition, the approval of these commercial arrangements -even in their altered form -- are a negative for consumers. Does Anyone Really Care About A Bigger 3DS?

Don Reisinger (SlashGear)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 1:22:09 PM

Theres a new gaming handheld in town. Its called the Nintendo 3DS XL. And I couldnt care less. Now, those who have been reading my columns on SlashGear know that Im not exactly the most understanding when it comes to Nintendo products. The devices are nice and all, but when we actually account for their gaming quality and appeal to the hardcore gamer I cant help but feel they fall short. Ive felt that way about the GameCube, Wii, and the 3DS. And now, I just cant see any reason to care about the 3DS XL. Of course, I know that the 3DS XL isnt really a new device. Instead, its an improvement to a product thats already on the market. And for big-time Nintendo fans, its something that will undoubtedly be a must-buy. But for those of us who havent necessarily found too much value in the 3DS, whats the sense in getting the 3DS XL? Yes, it has bigger screens, which should

enhance the 3D quality, but perhaps Nintendo is looking in the wrong direction. Like it or not, the 3DS isnt going to be able to carry Nintendos business, simply because smartphones and tablets are creeping into the handheld gaming market. What Nintendo needs now is not a gimmicky device, but something that appeals to the changing mobile times.

Exactly what that handheld might look like is anyones guess. Even if Nintendo offers up some sort of PlayStation Vita alternative, its unlikely that the company would be able to establish itself as a real threat to the iPhone and Androidbased smartphones. But offering up something that delivers less features and only adds 3D gaming isnt all that great."Its a world where bigger is typically better"

See, in the past, Nintendo has relied heavily upon consumers buying products that replace or in some way enhance those they already own. The GameBoy Color was arguably the best example of that. When Nintendo offered up the DS and then the DSi, the transition sort of made sense. Nowadays, though, things have changed. And to simply offer a product with bigger screens isnt like delivering color to a handheld device. The world is a different place. And its about time Nintendo catches up. If it doesnt, and continues to try its luck with iterative updates that many folks wont care about, itll eventually In a world where bigger is find itself in the junk heap of typically better, I can see why gaming history. The Circular Logic And Prayer Tactics Of Draghi Queens, Sinomaniacs, And Other Orwellians
Tyler Durden
Submitted at 8/25/2012 2:58:23 PM

( TrendHunter.com) The Candy Changs Confessions exhibit at the The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas realizes that whether it was just an embarrassing drunken story or a legitimate mistake, you dont leave Sin City...

We have desperately tried to explain the sheer idiocy of the circular argument of the Fed 'attemping' to stimulate fiscal policy by enacting an overly permissive monetary policy, having failed miserably time after time. Perhaps the 'simplistic' argumentation of Diapason's Sean Corrigan will succeed where we have failed (although we are not holding our breath). " Companies in the steel sector should be prepared for a longterm depression," Zhang Changfu, secretary-general of the CISA, told media earlier. Strange then, that the offificial data for July suggest that Chinese steel outout hit a new, all-time high of 61.7M tonnes during the month, the YoY increase making up no less than 99% of the entire global increment over the year. Why on earth would this be? Chalk it up to moral hazardspecifically, the same zombifying belief shared by the whole motley crew of Sinomaniacs, Draghi queens, and QEasers everywhere; that bad news equals good; that,

in true Orwellian fashion, 'Weakness Is Strength' - that any shortfall in voluntary demand will elicit a large enough crank of the priting press handle that the glut will soon be removed from the market and so obviate the need to undertake any painful restructuring, or to quit the business and release scarce resources for use by those with a genuinely viable busines plan. ... Back in metal-bashing business, Wang Lei, the head of a Shandong ore trading company, bemoaned the current adversity, telling Caixin: " If you had iron ore [last year], you could hold it for a couple months and then sell it and earn $20 to $30 per ton easily. We bought ore for about $135 per ton, but no one will take it, even if we try to sell it at a loss." Wang and his friends apprear to have drawn a deangerous lesson from the events of 2008-9 though. As he told the magazine, Wang remembers watching the value of his company's inventories decline rapidly in 2008 until the price bottomed at US$60 per ton the following year.

When the ore prices fell, he reminisced, he and his fellow trades were not pessimistic because they correctly assumed that the Chinese government would step in with an economic stimulus to offset the crisis and so revive demand. Sure enough, as the boom progressed, prices soared, reaching close to $200 a tonne in 2010, a level they revisited some 18 months ago, before policy began to tighten and the long slide to sub-$100 began. So, once bailed out, always bailed out seems to be the guiding inference. Meantime, close your eyes and pray. Millennials Arent Buying Cars Or Houses, And It Could Hobble The Economy
Derek Thompson and Jordan Weissmann (Money Game)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 12:05:11 PM

In 2009, Ford brought its new supermini, the Fiesta, over from Europe in a brave attempt to attract the attention of young Americans. It passed out 100 of the cars to influential bloggers for a free sixmonth test-drive, with just one condition: document your experience online, whether you love the Fiesta or hate it. Young bloggers loved the car. Young drivers? Not so much. After a brief burst of excitement, in which Ford sold more than 90,000 units over 18 months, Fiesta sales plummeted. As of April 2012, they were down 30 percent from 2011. Dont blame Ford. The company is trying to solve a puzzle thats bewildering every automaker in America: How do you sell cars to Millennials (aka Generation Y)? The fact is, todays young people simply dont drive like their predecessors did. In 2010, adults between the ages of 21 and 34 bought just 27 percent of all new vehicles sold in America, down from the peak of 38 percent in 1985. Miles driven are down, too. Even the proportion of teenagers with a license fell, by 28 percent, between 1998 and 2008.

In a bid to reverse these trends, General Motors has enlisted the youth-brand consultants at MTV Scratcha corporate cousin of the TV network responsible for Jersey Shoreto give its vehicles some 20-something edge. I dont believe that young buyers dont care about owning a car, says John McFarland, GMs 31-yearold manager of global strategic marketing. We just think nobody truly understands them yet. Subaru, meanwhile, is betting that it can appeal to the quirky eco-conscious individualism that supposedly characterizes this generation. Were trying to get the emotional connection correct, says Doug OReilly, a publicist for Subaru. Ford, for its part, continues to push heavily into social media, hoping to more closely match its marketing efforts to the channels that Millennials use and trust the most. All of these strategies share a few key assumptions: that demand for cars within the Millennial generation is just waiting to be unlocked; that as the economy slowly recovers, todays young people will eventually want to buy cars as much as their parents and grandparents did; that a finertuned appeal to Millennial values can coax them into dealerships. Perhaps. But what if these assumptions are simply wrong?

propelled our most impressive recoveries. Millennials may have lost interest in both. Needless to say, the Great Recession is responsible for some of the decline. other accommodations for travelers; and thred-UP, a site where parents can buy and sell kids used clothing. From a distance, the sharing of cars, rooms, and clothes may seem a curiosity, more hippie than revolutionary. But tech-nology is allow-ing these practices to go mainstream, and that represents a big new step for consumers. For decades, inventory manage-ment was largely the province of companies, not individuals, and continual efforts to reduce inventorythe stock of things just sitting aroundhelped companies improve their bottom line. But today, peer-to-peer software and mobile technology allow us all to have access, just when we need it, to the things we used to have to buy and hold. And the most powerful application is for cars. The typical new car costs $30,000 and sits in a garage or parking spot for 23 hours a day. Zipcar gives drivers access to cars they dont have to own. Car ownership, meanwhile, has slipped down the hierarchy of status goods for many young adults. Zipcar conducted a survey of Millennials, Mark Norman, the companys president and chief operating officer, told us. And this generation said, We dont care about owning a car. Cars used to be what people aspired to own. Now its the smartphone. Some automakers are slowly coming around to that view. Last year, Ford agreed to become

Zipcars largest supplier on more than 250 college campuses. Young people prize access over ownership, said Sheryl Connelly, head of global consumer trends at Ford. I dont think car-buying for Millennials will ever be what it was for Boomers. But we know if they have the opportunity to drive Ford, theyre more likely to choose Ford if they buy a car. Subarus publicist Doug OReilly told us, The Millennial wants to tell people not just Ive made it, but also Im a tech person. Smartphones compete against cars for young peoples big-ticket dollars, since the cost of a good phone and data plan can exceed $1,000 a year. But they also provide some of the same psychic benefitsopening new vistas and carrying us far from the physical space in which we reside. You no longer need to feel connected to your friends with a car when you have this technology thats so ubiquitous, it transcends time and space, Connelly said. In other words, mobile technology has empowered more than just car-sharing. It has empowered friendships that can be maintained from a distance. The upshot could be a continuing shift from automobiles to mobile technology, and a big reduction in spending. Millennials, of course, are sharing more than transportation: theyre also sharing living quarters, albeit begrudgingly, and with less gee-whiz technology involved. According to Harvard Universitys Joint Center for

Housing Studies, between 2006 and 2011, the homeownership rate among adults younger than 35 fell by 12 percent, and nearly 2 million more of themthe equivalent of Houstons populationwere living with their parents, as a result of the recession. The ownership society has been overrun by renters and squatters. Nine out of 10 Millennials say they eventually want a place they own, according to a recent Fannie Mae survey. But this generations path to home-ownership is fraught with obstacles: low pay, low savings, tighter lending standards from banks. Student debtsome $1 trillion in totalstalks many potential buyers as they seek a mortgage (or a car loan). At a minimum, homeownership rates are highly unlikely to soon return to the peaks they hit during the housing bubble. Still, in the next decade, a group of people the size of Californias population-most of them Millennialswill likely come together to form new households. The question is: Where, and in what manner? In some respects, Millennials residential aspirations appear to be changing just as significantly as their driving habitsindeed, the two may be related. The old cul-de-sacs of Revolutionary Road and Desperate Housewives have fallen out of favor with Generation Y. Rising instead are both city centers and what some developers call urban lightdenser suburbs that

revolve around a walkable town center. People are very eager to create a life that blends the best features of the American suburbschools still being the primary, although not the only, drawand urbanity, says Adam Ducker, a managing director at the real-estate consultancy RCLCO. These are places like Culver City, California, and Evanston, Illinois, where residents can stroll among shops and restaurants or hop on public transportation. Such small cities and town centers lend themselves to tighter, smaller housing developments, whether apartments in the middle of town, or small houses a five-minute drive away. An RCLCO survey from 2007 found that 43 percent of GenYers would prefer to live in a close-in suburb, where both the houses and the need for a car are smaller. Wholly apart from their urban sensibility, townhouses and other small houses are more affordable, all else equal, and developers know that to attract Millennials, they need to cater to tattered bank accounts. The types of properties young people are buying now are different from what [that age group] bought five years ago, said Shannon Williams King, the vice chair of strategic planning at the National Association of Realtors. They are within walking distance of shopping centers. These buyers want bike shares and Zipcar. They like feeling connected. In short, the future of the house might look a

lot like the future of the car: smaller, cheaper, built for a new economy. If the Millennials are not quite a post--driving and post-owning generation, theyll almost certainly be a less--driving and less--owning generation. That could mean some tough adjustments for the economy over the next several years. In recent decades, the housing industry has usually led us out of recession. When the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates in the midst of the sharp recession of the early 1980s, for instance, a construction boom helped fuel the Reagan Recovery. With the housing market moribund, the Federal Reserve has lost a key means of influencing the economy with lower interest rates. The serviceled recovery weve gotten instead is not nearly as robust. I dont think car-buying for Millennials will ever be what it was for Boomers, said Sheryl Connelly, head of global consumer trends at Ford. Smaller houses built in dense, mixed-use neighborhoods generally take longer to build than McMansions on green-field sites. And of course, because they require fewer fixtures and furnishings, their construction spurs less economic activity. Whats more, both construction and automaking are solidly blue-collar sectors. They employ millions of middle-class workers, who could be hurt by a transition MILLENNIALS page 25

Home Sellers Get Realistic in Australia; Mining Companies Going Bust in Record Numbers; Australia Headed for Disaster Zone
noreply@blogger.com (Mike Mish Shedlock) (Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 11:11:00 AM

Real estate agents in Australia who assured everyone for years there was no housing bubble and home prices would only ever go up because there was a "shortage of houses" are now telling everyone who is stuck in a house they cannot afford that they have prices too high. What this means of course is real estate agents are selling few homes, thus making little in commissions so they need prices to come down. What the agents don't realize is this is the beginning of a trend and home prices, some drastically reduced already, still have much further to fall. The Sunshine Coast Daily reports Sellers get realistic with cuts The prices of some Sunshine Coast properties have been slashed by a million dollars as owners look to shift homes that have been stewing on the market for up to four years. A Sunshine Beach property that was on the market in 2008 for $2.6 million has been reduced to $1.595 million while a Cooroy property for sale for $3.15 million

in 2009 has been discounted $1.155 million. A list of the top 25 discounted properties from the SQM Research shows prices discounted between 24% and 40%. The head of SQM Research, Louis Christopher, said the discounting was the result of vendors being forced to correct unrealistic price expectations. "Many are not willing to accept where the buyers are at. They can't handle, psychologically, that this is what their property is worth," he said. The discounting on the Sunshine Coast was not confined to any area or price range. SQM's list showed price cuts at beachside locations from Mooloolaba through to Noosa Heads and Rainbow Beach, and out to the hinterland villages of Mapleton, Cooroy and Imbil. In Due Time My Little Pretty This article is sure to trigger complaints "It's only the Sunshine Coast" or some other such nonsense as if large cities and more populated areas will not be affected to this degree. In due time my little pretty, all in due time. Back in the Solar System By the way, the article said

sellers are realistic. What the writer meant was "back in the solar system" as opposed to "realistic". Until homes are selling in normal transaction volumes for sustained periods, sellers will not really be "realistic". Risk of Recession? Remember how the boom in China was guaranteed to prevent falling prices for iron ore and other commodities? Recall that such nonsense was supposed to prevent a recession. More reality has set in as Australia faces growing risk of recession in 2013 ONE of Europe's biggest banks today warned of the growing risk of recession in Australia in 2013, as prices for its key commodities such as iron ore and coal spiral lower. The warning by Deutsche Bank comes amid rising concern that Australia's mining investment boom, which has insulated the commodity-rich economy from a global slowdown, is waning, leading to mine expansions being scaled back and mounting job losses. Policy makers are "dangerously complacent" about the risk now arrayed against the $1.4 trillion economy, which relies heavily on

prices paid for its biggest exports - iron ore, coal and gas - for its prosperity. The assessment stands in stark contrast to the upbeat appraisal by the RBA, which earlier this month upwardly revised its forecast for economic growth in 2012 to 3.5 per cent, from 3 per cent. The RBA today said it expected the mining investment boom to peak during 2013-14, but added the timing of the peak was uncertain. Also today, corporate insolvencies hit a record high in the year to June 30, according to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. Mining states are among the worst hit, it said. "We see one of the mining boom states, Queensland, showing one of the most dramatic increases in corporate failures," ASIC said. "Western Australia's financial year company failure figure is also the highest on record for that state." Mining Companies Going Bust in Record Numbers The idea the investment boom will keep going until 2014 is complete nonsense given mining companies are going insolvent at record highs. The upward GDP revision by the

Reserve Bank of Australia is also nonsense. One really has to wonder what those clowns are smoking. Iron Ore Prices Near Three-Year Low The Financial Times reports Iron Ore Prices Near Three-Year Low. Iron ore prices have fallen to their lowest since late 2009 as steelmakers in Europe curtail purchases, forcing miners to sell their output in the congested Asian market. Iron ore traders and brokers said Vale of Brazil, the worlds largest iron ore miner, was diverting part of the material usually identified for European steel mills into the Asian spot market at the precise moment Chinese consumption slows down, forming a glut. Iron ore has been a cash-cow for the mining sector during the past five years and the current drop in prices is affecting substantially the profitability of blue-chip miners Vale and London-listed Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Anglo American. Cost of Chinese steel has also plunged to levels last seen nearly three years ago, emphasising the depth of the slowdown in the HOME page 25

away from home construction and auto manufacturing. The tech companies that sell personal electronics and provide highspeed Internet connections dont need as many workers. And the jobs they do createdomestically at leastskew heavily toward the top of the socioeconomic ladder. Yet in the long run, theres good cause for optimism as well. Nobody is suggesting that the American consumer has bought her last house or caronly that houses and cars may lose some of the outsize importance theyve had to the economy for the past 10 or 20 years or more. There are a lot of countries, Germany for example, where homeownership rates are a lot lower than ours, and they have healthy incomes, said Robert Lerman, an Urban Institute fellow in labor and social policy. Simple arithmetic says that if Americans spend less money on cars and houses, theyll have more money left over to spend or saveand not all of that will go

to electronic gadgets. Education is the obvious outlet for the money Millennials can spend, Perry Wong, the director of research at the Milken Institute, told us, noting that if young people invest less in physical things like houses, theyll have more to invest in themselves. In the past, housing was the main vehicle for investment, but education is also a vehicle. In an ideas economy, up-to-date knowledge could be a more nimble and valuable asset than a house. Whats more, the shift away from traditional suburbs toward denser, urban-light living could have major economic-growth implications on its own. Economic research shows that doubling a communitys population density tends to increase productivity by anywhere between 6 percent and 28 percent. Economists have found that more than half of the variation in output per worker across U.S. states can

be explained by density. Our wealth, after all, is determined not only by our own skills and talents, but by our ability to access the ideas of those around us; theres a lot to be gained by increasing the odds that smart people might bump against each other. Ultimately, if the Millennial generation pushes our society toward more sharing and closer living, it may do more than simply change Americas consumption culture; it may put America on firmer economic footing for decades to come. Analysts at Nomura said they were very concerned that Chinese steel mills had increased production at the same time as prices fell and many of them had struggled to make a profit. The recent collapse in steel and iron ore prices suggests to us that we have reached the point in the cycle where a major destock is required, Nomura said. If production is not cut voluntarily, imbalances will continue to build, increasing the risk of a large, involuntary cut in steel production. Last month the China Iron and Steel Association said domestic steelmakers saw profits plunge 96 per cent in the first half compared with a year ago, turning the industry into a disaster zone. Smart Money acknowledges its big miss with GATA and gold

Section:#0000ff;">Daily Dispatches 3:40p ET Saturday, August 25, 2012 Dear Friend of GATA and Gold: Founded in 1992, Smart Money magazine, a product of The Wall Street Journal, is going out of business with its September issue, which includes a review, titled "Hits and Misses," of what the magazine, its editors, and writers have gotten right and wrong in their 20 years. Perhaps their biggest miss is gold, as signified by the magazine's recapitulation of its June 2004 interview with GATA Chairman Bill Murphy, who remarked that the monetary

metal, then priced at $422 per ounce, would double. "That's not what we predicted at all," Smart Money's Russell Pearlman reflects. "'History, at least the past 200 years or so,' we wrote, was not on the side of gold lovers. While there was perhaps some short-term money to be made in the precious metal, 'the bull market for gold will not last and anyone making gold the cornerstone of his or her investment porfolios is making a serious mistake.' New York fund manager Chris Davis agreed with us at the time. Gold, he said, wasn't an 'earning asset' (one that paid dividends). It was a psychological asset. 'I just don't get it,' he shrugged. Neither, it seems, did we." GATA explained it to Smart Money then and since then has been explaining it to everyone

else with eyes to see and ears to hear. But while you can lead a financial journalist to a central bank, you can't make him ask the right questions. Tropical Storm Isaac is not a hurricane ( yet) and it hasn't landed on the U.S. ( yet). But analysts are already estimating the costs of the potential damage. From CoreLogic: Based on current forecasts, Tropical Storm Isaac is predicted to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane and become the first hurricane to impact the United States this year, said Dr. Howard Botts, vice president and director of database development for CoreLogic Spatial Solutions. Though the forecasted path is constantly changing, at this point, Isaac seems to be poised to strike the Gulf Coast early Wednesday. Major metro areas that could potentially feel the impact of

hurricane-driven storm surge include New Orleans, La.; Baton Rouge, La.; Biloxi, Miss.; Mobile, Ala.; Pensacola, Fla. and Tallahassee, Fla., depending on where the storm makes landfall. The data shows nearly 210,000 total residential properties valued at more than $27.7 billion in seven major metro areas along the Gulf Coast could be at risk for storm-surge related flooding, assuming the storm hits as a Category 1 hurricane. The number of residential properties in each metro area and their respective potential exposure to damage are as follows: Here's CoreLogic's map: Please follow Clusterstock on Twitter and Facebook. Q&A: Perry Noble on Praying for 3,000 Salvations in One Weekend

(The Christian Post)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 2:51:15 PM

(Photo: NewSpring via The Christian Post) Perry Noble, founding pastor of NewSpring Church in South Carolina, preaches May 20, 2012. August 25, 2012| 3:51 pm The "Pray for 3K" campaign was first mentioned three months ago, but it officially began last Sunday when Noble preached a sermon titled "Going for the Big Ask!" Each day since that time the church's blog has featured daily posts advising members how to pray so that the church can see Pentecost-sized numbers of people come to faith in Jesus Christ this weekend, Aug. 24-26. Noble spoke with The Christian Post on Friday to talk more about the campaign and how he overcame the desire to keep his 3,000-person goal a secret. CP: Tell me about the "Pray for 3K" initiative, how did it come about? Noble: It's honestly been something that I've always dreamed about ever since I became a Christian. If you read through the Book of Acts, in Acts chapter two, the first time the Gospel was ever presented, the Bible says 3,000 people got

saved. Some people argue and say, "Do numbers matter?" And I'm like, well, they counted them then, and so something happened there so significant that somebody said, "Let's count these people that are coming to Christ." And I always thought, man, that would just be awesome to be a part of something like that. And so it was like one of those things you almost put on your bucket list, like hey, before I die I would like to see 3,000 people come to Christ. Follow us And it just hit me a few months ago, actually while I was on my sabbatical, why wait? Why wait until "one day" if it's something that's biblical, it's not bad, a lot of people are going to get saved, why not just go ahead and pray and prepare for it and just try our best to go for it today? CP: What was the main point behind your "Going for the Big Ask" message last week? Noble: Actually, there were only two points to the message. "Ask them," which means let's go ask our friends and family members, let's go ask them to come to church next week because we're going to have a service that presents the Gospel, and then let's "ask Him," meaning Jesus, to do what he does and save people next

Sunday. A lot of times we'll pray for people but we won't invite them to church or won't talk to them about Christ. And then on the flip side a lot of times we'll go talk to people and invite them to church, but we've never prayed for them. And so I think it's not an "either-or," it's a "both and." You've got to be willing to ask of them to come to church and then ask Him to do something significant in their life. CP: How fundamental has the idea of asking God for these big things been to the growth of your church? Noble: We've been going about 12 years. We've always just kind of prayed. I call it "pray big" ... Let's ask the Lord to provide us with some land to build this campus on. Let's ask the Lord for the right staff to come into a particular position and fill it. But this is the biggest "ask" we've ever called for. We've really planned and prepared and prayed for this, and my prayer is that it would be inspirational to the [universal] Church ... Hey, we really can attempt great things for God. And then it would be inspirational to every person that comes to church. Let them be a part of asking the Lord to do something significant, and then He does it, and then they're like,

"Oh my gosh. If He can do that for the church, then I need to pray for big things in my life as well." So I think the church wins, I think the individual in the church wins, and so we're just really excited about it. CP: On an average weekend, about how many people attend NewSpring campuses for services? Noble: This fall, so far, I would say we're averaging around 18,000 a weekend. CP: Have you had a chance to research what the highest number of salvations was in a given weekend at NewSpring Church before? Noble: We saw 1,000 people one time. There was a weekend within the last year that we saw a little over 1,000 people come to Christ. CP: So this is obviously the biggest you've ever asked for, is that intimidating at all to you? Noble: Oh yeah, absolutely ... The thing I thought at first was, "I'll pray for this privately and I won't let people know that I'm asking for something like this." But the more time I spent reading my Bible, praying ... I was like, the only reason I would not say this out loud is because I'm afraid that if I say it and it doesn't happen, it makes me look bad. Maybe it makes God look bad, or whatever.

And then I realized, the Lord doesn't need me to defend His reputation. He's going to do what He's going to do, and all through the Scripture He invites us to ask Him for big things. Jesus did it in John 14, John 15 and John 16 ... Jesus said in John 14:12, you'll do greater things than me, just ask. So I was very intimidated but I'm like, you know what, I'm just going to say it. And at the end of the day if ... we're asking for 3,000 and 1,500 get saved, Oh darn! We're still 1,500 people short, but 1,500 people received the Lord. So I don't think it's bad, but I'm like ... I just really, really want to ask big for the rest of my life. CP: I've had the opportunity to follow your blog posts this week, which are guiding the members of your church on what to pray for, specifically, each day. How do you motivate such a large group to pray fervently? Noble: I think the big thing is: Keep it simple. I think one of the mistakes I've made as a church leader in the past several years is I've tried to give people too many steps, but the more simple you make it, everybody can kind of latch on to that. So this week I said, hey, let's just go one week ... I would love for it Q&A: page 29

to be a lifestyle change, I would love for people to do this for the rest of their life, but, hey, the way you eat an elephant is one bite at a time. So, hey, let's just for one week do everything possible to ask people to come to church, and then ask Jesus to save them. And even the person that's sitting in the congregation every Sunday that's got so much on their plate, they can at least nod their head and go, "You know what, I can do that. I can do that for one week. I can ask one person to come to church with me, and I can ask Jesus to save them. Yes, I can do that for one week. Sign me up." CP: I know one of your big sayings is "found people find people." Can you speak about how prayer, combined with human effort, work together to see people come to know Christ? Noble: I think it's imperative to understand that both of those things work together. Because if we pray for something, and we pray for somebody to receive Christ, but we're not willing to [share] Christ, then what we're saying is, "God, I want you to do all the work, but I'm not willing to partner with you in doing it." Which I think is basically a slap in the face of God. On the flip side is sometimes we'll go out and try to do all this

stuff on our own strength and our own ability ... and the problem is we never actually ask God for any direction, any help, anything. And so I think it's imperative that both of those things work together. And it seems to be an idea that I think our people really grabbed onto. CP: What kind of message are you going to be preaching this Sunday, then, anticipating having a large group on non-Christians at all of your services? Noble: Every church has what I call its "geographical challenges." So we're in the Southeast, we're basically in the state of South Carolina. And so one of the things I felt like I wanted to do was preach a message that I felt like everybody could connect with, Christians and non-Christians. So it's all coming back to a message on the cross, because you could be the most irreligious person on the planet, but if you live in the state of South Carolina you've seen a cross, you probably have a necklace or a pair of earrings with a cross on it, you've seen it. But really explaining what the cross is and why it matters to us, what Jesus did there and why it matters I think it's going to be one of those messages. And it's going to connect, I think, with people that have been in church

for 50 years and the people that have been in church for 50 minutes. It's very simple. It's very direct. It's very to the point, and it calls for a specific response at the end for people to surrender their lives to Christ. CP: Is there anything else you feel you should mention about this weekend? Noble: Just that I hope that churches are really encouraged by it, to just ask God for big things in their church. I really think so many times we're afraid to ask for big things or we're afraid to articulate it, but the real reason why is because we're so obsessed with our own reputation. That was the case with me. And then, of course, I'm hoping that 3,000 people's lives, eternities, are altered and that we see God just do something that's more amazing than anything we've ever seen. Tesla's Revenge: Filmmakers Kickstart Electrifying Docudrama About Cult Genius

Hugh Hart (Wired Top Stories)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 6:00:00 AM

Proposed docudrama The Story and Life of Nikola Tesla would include dramatic re-enactments. Image courtesy Wil Cashen Inspired by maverick genius Nikola Tesla, Wil Cashen invented an electric pickup truck. Now the Los Angeles-based engineer and entrepreneur wants to pay homage to his role model by making a docudrama about the eccentric Serbian-American inventor. Cashens film project Electricity: The Story and Life of Nikola Tesla, which is currently up for funding through Kickstarter, would help educate mainstream audiences about the brilliant scientist whose system for distributing free wireless electricity got squashed by established business interests led by Thomas Edison. Writer Carol Bourgeois, who began researching Tesla 12 years ago and finally completed her final script early this year, told Wired by phone that when she

interviewed people on the streets of Los Angeles, nine out of 10 drew a blank at the mention of the Tesla name. Its time for him to shine, she said, citing several incidents in which the obsessive-compulsive Tesla got cheated out of profits and patents. This is a dude that got screwed and didnt get a penny for any of his patents. Thats where our passion comes

in. The movie will feature dramatic re-enactments, interviews, vintage film sequences and archival photographs filmed in slowpanning Ken Burns style, according to project rep Zach Taiji. Kickstarter funders can snag cool swag including Nikola Tesla action figures. Before its fund-raising launch August 9, the proposed

docudrama had already attracted support from magician Marco Tempest, who allowed the filmmakers to embed his Sound and Light TED talk video and making-of companion piece on their Kickstarter page. David Bowies portrayal of Tesla in Christopher Nolans Victorianera science thriller The Prestige will be hard to beat, and God only knows what itll look like if

Christian Bale decides to portray Tesla in Tesla, Ruler of the World, now in discussions. But if Cashen, Bourgeoise, producer Bud Brutsman and director Shawn Papazian achieve their $35,000 goal, The Story and Life could inform new generations about the bittersweet Tesla legacy. Cashen and his team can only hope to match the success of another Tesla-themed Kickstarter campaign. Earlier this week, webcomic the Oatmeal raised $900,000 in just seven days to purchase property where the inventors lab was located as the site for a Tesla museum. Video: How ILM Made Battleship Look Cooler Than a Board Game
Angela Watercutter (Wired Top Stories)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 6:00:00 AM

Technically speaking, the bestlooking things in Battleship were probably Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgrd and Rihanna. But technologically speaking, the crazy alien spacecraft stole the show. To get those mightily fluid extraterrestrial ships to float, Battleship s filmmakers enlisted the help of Industrial Light & Magic. The making-of clip above, which comes from the films upcoming DVD release, breaks down just how ILMs visual effects whizzes made those alien craft look so cool in the waters of the Pacific.

We knew we had to create a whole new water system at ILM a new way of directing water and simulating water and being able to render it in very real ways, ILM visual effects supervisor Grady Cofer says in the video. To do that, the VFX house created masses of digital blue water for director Peter Bergs film, then built whitecaps, mist and splashes out of digitally rendered mass until the water was fully realized. ILM also went to great lengths to create each of the alien ships and give them a unique color palette that would make them stand out in a given scene. Its interesting to kind of see how this nugget of some idea with a lot of R&D and a lot of render

time really kind of led to one of the most visually arresting shots in the movie, Cofer says of the films massive spaceship flyover scene. And hey, they definitely made it look cooler than an animated board game. Battleship comes out Tuesday on DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray combo pack, On Demand and digital download. David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Chart of the Week: Tax Revenues Devoured by Entitlements

Michael Sandoval (The Foundry: Conservative Policy News Blog from The Heritage Foundation)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 9:08:06 AM

The looming unsustainability of the big three entitlement spending programsMedicare, Medicaid, and Social Securityis not inevitable, but in order to avoid the catastrophic effects of consuming every bit of tax revenue in just one generation, reform is a necessity. Take a look at Medicare, the largest portion of the projected entitlement expense by the year 2045. Heres the projected outlook of spending on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security by 2045, when entitlement spending matches tax revenues, from Heritages Federal Budget in Pictures, using Congressional Budget Office figures: The need for Medicare reform in light of the impending crisis going forward has elicited the

acknowledgement of all sides, which Heritages Amy Payne highlighted in a recent Morning Bell: Quick quiz: Who said this about Medicare? With an aging population and rising health care costs, we are spending too fast to sustain the program. And if we dont gradually reform the system while protecting current beneficiaries, it wont be there when future retirees need it. We have to reform Medicare to strengthen it. It was President Barack Obama, just last year. Obamacare has already ended Medicare as we know it. Obamacare will not preserve Medicare or even prevent the programs descent into unsustainability. Instead, as Heritages Alyene Senger reported, the Congressional Budget Office adjusted its estimate of Medicare cuts to $716 billion over 10 years, in a raid on Medicares core services:

According to the CBO, the payment cuts in Medicare include: A $260 billion payment cut for hospital services. A $39 billion payment cut for skilled nursing services. A $17 billion payment cut for hospice services. A $66 billion payment cut for home health services. A $33 billion payment cut for all other services. A $156 billion cut in payment rates in Medicare Advantage (MA); $156 billion is before considering interactions with other provisions. The House Ways and Means Committee was able to include interactions with other provisions, estimating the cuts to MA to be even higher, coming in at $308 billion. $56 billion in cuts for disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payments.* DSH payments go to hospitals that serve a large number of low-income patients. $114 billion in other provisions pertaining to Medicare, Medicaid,

and CHIP* (does not include coverage-related provisions). Far from protecting seniors and preventing the programs insolvency, the Medicare raid cuts services for seniors and hastens Medicares impact on the federal credit card, as it makes up the largest portion of the projected entitlement spending by 2045. Only true reformparticularly, converting Medicare to a premium support systemcould produce the adjustment necessary to keep Medicare from careening out of control. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong made history by placing his left foot onto the surface of the moon and uttering the words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" and completed arguably the greatest scientific feat of the 20th century. Astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82

(Evening Standard - News)
Submitted at 8/25/2012 3:20:09 PM

Tributes have been paid to Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon, who has died at the age of 82. The former Nasa astronaut underwent heart surgery earlier this month. He famously uttered the quote moments after setting foot on the lunar surface: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore said: "As the first man on the Moon, he broke all records. I knew him well. He was a man who had all the courage in the world." A statement from Mr Armstrong's family said he died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the Moon on July 20 1969.

He and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the Moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs. Mike Cruise, professor of astrophysics and space research at the University of Birmingham, said: "The people at the front of the race always have to tread on new ground. He led the whole world into a space era of greater proportion than has been achieved by satellites. You wonder when his first steps will be followed up. It must have been very aweinspiring to step on to, essentially, a new planet." Former astronaut Tom Jones, who completed four space shuttle flights between 1990 and 2001, told Sky News: "Mr Armstrong was one of the astronauts that was my hero when I was growing up and I watched his initial landing on the Moon in 1969 with incredible interest. I wanted to do

exactly what Neil, and Buzz (Aldrin), and Mike Collins were doing that time. I hoped that one day I would have the chance to participate in the space programme. He really was an inspiration to an entire generation of people." Jamie Burgess, from the National Space Centre, said: "I think it is safe to say (he was) a very brave man, a very courageous man. To be able to have that bravery is an incredible quality in a person. He is a fantastic character and will be sorely missed." Obama administration cooking the books on deportation numbers

First Man on the Moon Neil Armstrong Dies

(FOXNews.com)

posted at 4:01 pm on August 25, 2012 by Howard Portnoy The news should come as no surprise considering it centers on an administration that doublecounts $716 billion in order to claim that the Obamacare extends the solvency of Medicare while looting the entitlements trust fund. The Daily Caller reports: Internal documents obtained by the House Judiciary Committee show that the Obama administration has been cooking the books in order to reach their record number of deported illegal immigrants, chairman Rep. Lamar Smith said Friday. Based on the internal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) documents, the number of removals are actually down, the opposite of what the administration has been claiming. This latest fun with math on the administrations part

artificially inflates the number of deportations by counting individuals removed from U.S. soil through the Alien Transfer Exit Program (ATEP). ATEP is a program that moves apprehended illegal immigrants to another point along the border, sometimes as much as a thousand miles from where they crossed. The object is to discourage deportees from instantly re-trying a border crossing. The measure is also designed to create a hardship for them that will serve as a deterrent to them and others contemplating sneaking across the border. Of the administration latest ploy, Smith said in a statement: It is dishonest to count illegal immigrants apprehended by the Border Patrol along the border as ICE removals. And these removals from the Border Patrol program do not subject the illegal immigrant to any penalties or bars for returning to the U.S. This means a single illegal immigrant can show up at the border and be removed numerous times in a single yearand counted each

time as a removal. The DC goes on to note that given this new information, the committees Republican majority subtracted the ATEP removals from ICEs deportation totals. The result is that the estimated 397,000 deportations for 2011 becomes approximately 360,000, and the 2012 removals to date drop from about 334,000 to an estimated 263,000. allowed himself to be caught up in the celebrity and glamor of the space program. "I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. "And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession." A man who kept away from cameras, Armstrong went public in 2010 with his concerns about President Barack Obama's space policy that shifted attention away from a return to the moon and emphasized private companies developing spaceships. He testified before Congress and in an email to The Associated Press, Armstrong said he had "substantial reservations," and along with more than two dozen Apollo-era veterans, he signed a letter calling the plan a "misguided proposal that forces NASA out of human space operations for the foreseeable future." Armstrong's modesty and selfeffacing manner never faded. When he appeared in Dayton in 2003 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight, he bounded onto a stage before 10,000 people packed into a baseball stadium. But he spoke for only a few seconds, did not mention the moon, and quickly ducked out of the spotlight. He later joined former astronaut and Sen. John Glenn to lay wreaths on the graves of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Glenn

introduced Armstrong and noted it was 34 years to the day that Armstrong had walked on the moon. "Thank you, John. Thirty-four years?" Armstrong quipped, as if he hadn't given it a thought. At another joint appearance, the two embraced and Glenn commented: "To this day, he's the one person on Earth, I'm truly, truly envious of." Armstrong's moonwalk capped a series of accomplishments that included piloting the X-15 rocket plane and making the first space docking during the Gemini 8 mission, which included a successful emergency splashdown. In the years afterward, Armstrong retreated to the quiet of the classroom and his southwest Ohio farm. Aldrin said in his book "Men from Earth" that Armstrong was one of the quietest, most private men he had ever met. In the Australian interview, Armstrong acknowledged that "now and then I miss the excitement about being in the cockpit of an airplane and doing new things." At the time of the flight's 40th anniversary, Armstrong again was low-key, telling a gathering that the space race was "the ultimate peaceful competition: USA versus U.S.S.R. It did allow both sides to take the high road with the objectives of science and learning and exploration." Glenn, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong as part of the astronaut

program, described him as "exceptionally brilliant" with technical matters but "rather retiring, doesn't like to be thrust into the limelight much." Derek Elliott, curator of the Smithsonian Institution's U.S. Air and Space Museum from 1982 to 1992, said the moonwalk probably marked the high point of space exploration. The manned lunar landing was a boon to the prestige of the United States, which had been locked in a space race with the former Soviet Union, and re-established U.S. pre -eminence in science and technology, Elliott said. "The fact that we were able to see it and be a part of it means that we are in our own way witnesses to history," he said. The 1969 landing met an audacious deadline that President Kennedy had set in May 1961, shortly after Alan Shepard became the first American in space with a 15-minute suborbital flight. (Soviet cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin had orbited the Earth and beaten the U.S. into space the previous month.) "I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth," Kennedy had said. "No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important to the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish. The end-of-decade goal was met

with more than five months to spare. "Houston: Tranquility Base here," Armstrong radioed after the spacecraft settled onto the moon. "The Eagle has landed." "Roger, Tranquility," the Houston staffer radioed back. "We copy you on the ground. You've got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot." The third astronaut on the mission, Michael Collins, circled the moon in the mother ship Columbia 60 miles overhead while Armstrong and Aldrin went to the moon's surface. In all, 12 American astronauts walked on the moon between 1969 and the last moon mission in 1972. For Americans, reaching the moon provided uplift and respite from the Vietnam War, from strife in the Middle East, from the startling news just a few days earlier that a young woman had drowned in a car driven off a wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island by Sen. Edward Kennedy. The landing occurred as organizers were gearing up for Woodstock, the legendary three-day rock festival on a farm in the Catskills of New York. Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel.

As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license. Armstrong enrolled in Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering but was called to duty with the U.S. Navy in 1949 and flew 78 combat missions in Korea. After the war, Armstrong finished his degree from Purdue and later earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He became a test pilot with what evolved into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft from gliders to jets. Armstrong was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962 -- the first, including Glenn, was chosen in 1959 -- and commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966. After the first space docking, he brought the capsule back in an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean when a wildly firing thruster kicked it out of orbit. Armstrong was backup commander for the historic Apollo 8 mission at Christmastime in 1968. In that flight, Commander Frank Borman, and Jim Lovell and Bill Anders circled the moon 10 times, and paving the way for the lunar landing seven months later. Storm surge and tornadoes also are possible when Isaac hits, and winds could topple power lines and lead to lengthy power outages, Feltgen said. The Panhandle already has had a wet summer, so potential flooding was especially possible there. Schools, airports, parks and beaches across South Florida closed ahead of the storm. In the Florida Keys, officials said they would open storm shelters and urged vacationers to leave. State officials warned Isaac was a massive storm -- even though the eye may not pass over Tampa, tropical storm-force winds extended 230 miles from the center. Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual. Groups including Code Pink, People for the Ethical Treatment

of Animals, the AFL-CIO union and Planned Parenthood have already started arriving in Tampa, regardless of the forecast. Police said even heavy rain could reduce the protesters' ranks, and could also bring relief from another worry: extreme heat. Flooding and beach erosion is also a concern for southwest Florida. The hurricane warning included the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach southward. In 2000, when he agreed to announce the top 20 engineering achievements of the 20th century as voted by the National Academy of Engineering, Armstrong said there was one disappointment relating to his moonwalk. "I can honestly say -- and it's a big surprise to me -- that I have never had a dream about being on the moon," he said. From 1982 to 1992, Armstrong was chairman of Charlottesville, Va.-based Computing

He then became chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company in Deer Park, N.Y. Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in Indian Hill, a Cincinnati suburb. So, it seems that all those airborne clues about LG's new superphone are slowly coalescing into something more concrete. In fact, according to the folk at AndroidMx, so concrete they've actually had a go with one. Most of the specification they report
