Partners in the Waneta Expansion Project Fortis Inc.,
Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust
through the Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program
(WTCP), have provided funding to fve local projects and
are now accepting applications for 2013.
Tis program provides up to $50,000 annually to pro-
jects in the Waneta area that promote conservation and
restoration through research, physical works, and other
on-the-ground or applied projects.
Te Waneta Expansion Project is focused on a high
standard of environmental protection, said Audrey Re-
pin, spokesperson for the project. Te Waneta Terrestrial
Compensation Program provides an opportunity for or-
ganizations to undertake projects which beneft our nat-
ural environment.
As one of the fve recipients of funding from the WTCP
in 2012, Seepanee Ecological Consulting is provid-
ing cutting-edge nighthawk monitoring research in the
Fort Shepherd area, across the Columbia River from the
Waneta Expansion Project. Tese agile insectivores, are
active mostly at dusk and dawn, and are highly cryptic,
making monitoring very dif cult. With the help of fund-
ing through this program, Seepanee is hoping to build on
existing data regarding these birds regionally, and publish
their fndings scientifcally in the future.
Tese birds have been assessed federally as a species of
special concern, said Doris Hausleitner of Seepanee Eco-

Kootenay Storytelling Festival
Is Back!
Kootenay Storytelling Festival in Procter and Nelson,
will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and
September 16.
Te frst Kootenay Storytelling Festival was in Procter in
the summer of 1999. But the idea germinated a full year
earlier when three Procter people (two permanent resi-
dents and a summer escapee from Edmonton) got rid of
the idea of turning a classroom of the Procter Schoolhouse
into a museum and decided instead upon the idea of a
living museum, a festival of historical stories that would
bring the regional history to life through the art of oral
storytelling. As a practitioner of that art I was approached
by Gord Reid (may his curmudgeonly old soul rest in
peace) and asked to give a demonstration of what historical
storytelling might look, or sound like. I created a story and
character based on a composite of what Procter residents
may have looked like a century earlier and presented it at a
packed house gathering in October of 1998.
I guess the founders pitch, Gord and the other two,
Rick Budd and Soren Madsen, and my story must have
convinced the crowd that it was a good idea for Procter
because that evening seventeen people signed up to the
original organizing committee. For the next nine years, the
festival storytellers presented local history in such a fresh
and dynamic way.
Every July until 2007 we gathered together twelve story-
tellers and brought the Kootenays (East and West) to life
through story. I watched the enthusiasm and drive that
were infusing the event to the point that we were attracting
up to 900 people one year (averaging 500 to 700) for a sin-
gle weekend in a town of 600.
But as happens to all good things, enthusiasm waned,
the volunteer spirit got harder to rekindle, key people
stepped out and without really realizing it, 2007 became
the ninth and fnal Kootenay Storytelling Festival.
Ten simultaneously two interesting things happened last
year: a group of six people (mostly practitioners of the Art
of oral storytelling) got together in Nelson and formed the
Nelson Storytelling Guild, and a small group in Harrop-
Procter got together and said we have to
have a tenth and fnal festival and either
put the thing out of its misery or resusci-
tate it totally. Te two impulses merged
and a solution was born. Te Kootenay
Storytelling Festival was to have one last
kick at the can in Procter and then move
to Nelson, where supported by the much
larger population it could thrive and grow
into its hopefully bright future. And all of
this was to happen in one weekend.
So here we are, pushing the idea of a
good-bye Procter, hello Nelson festival
that spends a Saturday in the former and
a Sunday in the latter. Many storytellers
are eager to return. Carolyn McTaggart
of Gunpowder Gertie fame is coming
back. Susan Hulland from the East Shore
is returning as is our youngest ever story-
teller, ten-year-old Joshua Klassen from
Cranbrook (who is now 19 and still our
youngest.) Bringing a Doukhobor story
again is Wendy Voykin from Castlegar
and representing the Ktunaxa First Na-
tion again is the great teller Joe Pierre
from Cranbrook. Im working on re-
vamping my story from the frst festival
about Itchy Munro, a miner in Procter
from a century ago.
All in all we are pretty excited about
what is happening. We are staying true
to the original intent of the festival and
we are allowing it to expand and evolve
as it makes its move to the city to become
what it must become.

Argenta resident Lena Ruiz
poses wearing the dress she stapled
together from eight issues of the
Pennywise. Its one way of getting
in the news!
My niece Lena has been work-
ing with me as an artists model,
in a diferent pose and outft every
week. Tis week, wondering what
she was going to wear and tired of
her existing wardrobe, she came
up with the idea of a newspaper
dress...the night before it was
needed. So her time frame was
between suppertime one day and
noon the next. Te design was en-
tirely hers; she made it up as she
went along rather than working
it all out in advance. Dress de-
sign has been an interest of hers
for a few years now (she is nine-
teen) and she regularly sews gar-
ments she has designed, but to my
knowledge this is her frst venture
into the wonderful world of news-
print!
I was surprised and delighted
when she showed up for the oil
painting session with her news-
paper dress under her arm, and
quickly adjusted my ideas about
the pose!
Lena was brave enough to walk
home (2km) wearing her new
dress, for the enjoyment of the
neighbourhood! One visitor who
arrived at my studio that afer-
noon saw the recently completed
painting when she walked in the
door, and exclaimed: I saw that
girl!

NDWC Fundraiser
On Saturday, September 1 veteran performer Tret Fure
will bring her strong vocals and carefully crafed acoustics
to the Spiritbar. Te show is a fundraiser for the Nelson
and District Womens Centre, and is acting in collabora-
tion with the 16th annual Kootenay Pride Week. Amid a
week which seeks to highlight the pervasiveness of het-
ero-normativity and homophobia, who better to kick the
week of than Tret Fure a champion of LGBT rights, and
trailblazer for the womens acoustic music movement.
Tret Fures career spans four decades, and from the frst
stages of her career onwards, she has challenged homo-
phobia and gender norms.
She was one of the frst female sound engineers in the
LA music industry, and in the 1980s she found her home
in the budding genre of Womens Music, which she would
play a major role in developing. Tret worked in a duo with
Cris Williamson throughout the 1990s, and has since
reestablished herself in the folk world with fve acoustic
releases on her own label, Tomboy Girl Records.
Trets lyrics, like plainspoken poetry, are candid and honest.
Tey tread a variety of topics, from relationships and love, to
the politics of war and the trials of working class city life. Trets
solo work is driven by acoustic guitar and grounded in strong
clear vocals. To make this event even more of a treat, Tret will
be joined by performer Kate Reid, as the opening act!
Te Nelson and District Womens Centre, in partnership
with Kootenay Pride, is thrilled to bring Tret to Nelson!
Te show will take place September 1st, at the Spiritbar, in
the Hume Hotel at 422 Vernon. Doors open at 8:00 pm and
the show begins at 8:30 sharp. Tickets will be sold at Otter
Books or at the door for $20. At 11 pm there will be a drag
show hosted by Kootenay Pride, and tickets will be $15.
