Though it doesnt technically start until the 22nd, the kids being back in school triggers it for me. Not being a hot weather lover, I relish in the cooling temperatures and continue to be amazed by the colorful landscape that begins to emerge. One family tradition of ours has always been going apple picking in September. In fact, one of my favorite photos is that of my three children walking hand-in-hand between two rows of apple trees after a successful picking session ten years ago. Unfortunately, this years harvest will not be so plentiful, as most crops in our area have taken quite a hit this year due to the unusual spring weather and the summer drought. Please make an effort to support your local farmers this fall. Visit markets, pick-your-own farms and fundraising events you hear about. Do a bit of investigating to find all of the opportunities in your area! Im happy to share this months issue with you. Caitlin Brotz writes about all of the incredible benefits of avocado oil, a popular natural skin care product. Dr. Jodie shares some insight into why your pet may be lame and offers some natural treatment options. Alexandria Binkowski gives us a good overview of homeopathy, the holistic persons medicine. These are just a few examples of whats ahead for you this month, so please read on! I wish all of you a wonderful month and much success in your healthy living efforts. In health and happiness,

Fall has always been my favorite time of year.

why is my pet lame? ................................................................

By dr. Jodie

ogs and cats cant tell you directly if their legs hurt, but limping or holding up a paw is a sure bet something is bothering your furry friend. Lameness can appear suddenly or have a gradual onset. There are many reasons why a pet might have pain in an extremity. Historical details can provide many clues as to the cause and prognosis of the lameness. Be prepared to provide as much information to your pets veterinarian as possible to help them recommend the best tests and decipher the most accurate diagnosis. Not all lameness is a fracture! The most common reason for an indoor/outdoor cat to present lame is a bite wound. Often the tiny punctures are not noticeable, but can create painful

"Cats that jump from high places and dogs that romp wildly can easily cause themselves a mild sprain."
inflammation under the skin and if not treated, can lead to abscessation. Careful palpation will usually allow your vet to find the tiny scabs, which can be cleansed, soaked and opened to allow drainage. Essential oil treatments, such as lavender, can be very helpful early on; however, antibiotics are often necessary. Cats that jump from high places and dogs that romp wildly can easily cause themselves a mild sprain. With a little rest, these injuries can resolve quickly on their own. Again, you can provide some soothing relief with essential oils, such as copaiba, a potent antiinflammatory or Traumeel, a homeopathic tablet for acute soft tissue injury. When animals feel better, they often re-aggravate their injuries by jumping back into their normal routine too quickly. One of the most common rear leg sudden-onset injuries in dogs is a torn cruciate ligament. This is also a common injury in the
www.naturespathways.com

knee of a football player. Initially, this is very painful and causes laxity in the stifle joint. This instability is the key to diagnosis, as the torn ligament is NOT visible on a radiograph. Palpation of this area can be difficult if the pet is tense or the area is swollen. This type of injury is less common in small dogs and cats. Smaller canines are more prone to luxating patellas or wiggly knee caps. Most stifle injuries are considered surgical problems, but with good nutrition, appropriate weight, effective joint supplements and modalities, such as acupuncture or laser, many knees can be restored and managed pain-free for years without surgery. Certain breeds are also predisposed to specific types of leg maladies, and certain diseases are commonly concurrent with specific forms of lameness. For example, many dogs with Cushings disease develop torn cruciate ligaments. Large breed lovers know their dogs are predisposed to hip dysplasia. This awareness helps the pet guardian to take preventative measures. It is important to prevent excessive weight gain in all pets, but especially those predisposed to musculoskeletal disorders, such as dachshunds, who commonly suffer from intervertebral disc disease. This can cause lameness in any leg, hind end weakness or even paralysis. Also use nutritional supplements, even in puppies and kittens, to avoid expression or slow the onset of genetic conditions. Standard Process protomorphogen and whole food supplements are perfect for this. My favorites are Ligaplex II and Gota Kola, which stimulate collagen repair. Unfortunately, just as we can develop arthritis, so can our pets. But even the severity of, causes of and treatments for arthritis are widely varied. Dont miss the possibility that your dogs lameness could be due to Lyme disease. It has become quite routine to screen dogs for Lyme disease annually along with their heartworm test. Remember, this test indicates exposure, not necessarily active infection. It is normal for your dog to test positive even if he has fought off the disease by mounting an immune response, which is measured on the blood test. However, if your pet is concurrently ill or lame, Lyme disease may be the cause. Initiation of early antibiotic treatment with doxycycline can be very effective. It is possible to do follow-up testing to further quantify the extent of infection and to monitor treatment progress. This test is called a Quant C6. Most arthritis in pets is associated with aging. Some can be immune-mediated, just as in humans. Dogs are most commonly afflicted in their spines, hips and stifles; cats, in their lumbosacral region, which can often be correlated with constipation. By definition, "arthritis" is inflammation of the joint. Chronic inflammation needs to be addressed to avoid severe cartilage damage. Bone grinding on bone is very painful. It is very sad to have to euthanize an otherwise happy and healthy pet because his joints are too stiff and painful to get up to go to the bathroom. We continuously stress a species-appropriate, meat-based diet and a decreased vaccination schedule because this type of veterinary care program decreases the common stressors that contribute to many disorders, including lameness due to arthritis. Starches in typical kibble diets are inflammatory and cause weight gain. Excessive vaccinating is unnecessary and can be a burden to the immune system. Titre testing in lieu of vaccination is readily available and very helpful. Our utilization of acupuncture and laser treatments has kept us
www.naturespathways.com

busy striving to keep pets comfortable while avoiding the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are notorious for side effects, such as liver and kidney damage, dry eye, and stomach and intestinal ulceration. It is surprising how much dogs and, yes, cats enjoy their acupuncture or laser treatments. They actually want to come to the vet!

how does one live a healthy lifestyle after having been a victim? .....................................................................
By Kathy larson, CPT, CWC

hen we think of being a victim, we naturally associate that with some sort of abuse, be it mental, verbal, sexual or physical. These are some of the most common forms of abuse that may indeed allow an individual to become a victim or not. More importantly, will they choose to let go of the experience and/or the past for it to be used for a greater purpose in their life? In thinking about the vict prefix, its true meaning is to conquer, yet the victim is the one who is conquered. Usually the victim is characterized with a sense of feeling powerless, more times than not. Thus, the victim mentality becomes their reality and can prevent them from having success in many other areas of their lives. The inability to progress in the direction the victim desires is due to a constant feeling of defeat, blame and injustice. Giving up becomes a common occurrence in a victims life. Its only in choosing to learn from a horrific situation or experience that the higher road can be taken, as remaining a victim will only result in the same vicious cycle of negative results. They say that out of adversity comes opportunity, which I truly believe, as I too have lived through many forms of abuse, but have not chosen to ever be a victim. John Maxwell once said, Urgency; dont let it come to you from the outside. Start from the inside and have an urgency to live your best life now, and, I add, despite the negative circumstances youve encountered numerous times in your life. Remembering to focus on the positives and smiling daily, even if you have to fake it initially, is truly going to help you move forward and see the lesson in it all. Most importantly, it will help you to achieve success and happiness, and to live a healthy lifestyle. When you look at the importance of choosing to be a victor with your health and owning your past circumstances, it truly
Natures Pathways | september 2012

will make a difference in moving towards a healthier lifestyle, whether you want to lose weight, minimize the stress in your life or achieve a fitness goal youve always wanted, but never quite believed you could reach. As a coach, I hear and see it all day long with my clients the lack of confidence or low self-esteem that shines through and for some the arrogance and projection of their circumstances onto others for their own shortcomings. If you want to hit your ideal goal weight, run that race youve always aspired to, be debt free or maybe change professions to something youve always dreamed of, but you keep hearing those you cant do it voices, then its time to start owning your role in why you havent been successful. Is it time to forgive someone? Yourself? Is it time to stop pointing the finger at who wronged or hurt you and change what you can moving forward? Of course it is! To have faith in ones self and truly believe you can accomplish almost anything you desire will be the difference for you. Why wait another day? Let the pain and excuses go and get started on a new journey right now, not tomorrow. Start making a simple change today so that you can live your ultimate life. Rise to the occasion and take ownership of your life! Get back in the drivers seat and stop letting your victim mentality drive you wherever, whenever it wants to. Believe that you matter first and foremost! After all, you deserve to be a victor!

homeopathy
Medicine of the holistic person ........................................................................
By Alexandria S. Binkowski, MH, nd, MS

omeopathy is a highly systematic branch of medicine based on the Principle of Similarities: like is cured by like. It powerfully stimulates the bodys vital force (life energy) and is based on a few simple but profoundly insightful principles of Nature to treat illnesses. It has been known to be around since the time of Hippocrates, the Father of Western Medicine, born 460 B.C. Homeopathy became an organized, established medical treatment through the findings, teachings and writings of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the 1780s. Dr. Hahnemann began a quest for a better way of providing healthcare using the principles of Similars. While working on a project, he became fascinated with a species of South American tree bark (cinchona) that was being used to treat malaria-induced fever. Hahnemann ingested the bark and discovered that it caused symptoms similar to malaria. All of his further research proved the same results of Similars, that like is cured by like. Dr. Hahnemanns rate of success in treatment was so high that many other physicians started to study and treat their patients with this therapy, both physically and emotionally. The first homeopathic medical school started in the United States in the late 1800s. In the early 1900s, there were 22 homeopathic medical schools, 100 homeopathic hospitals and over 1,000 homeopathic pharmacies in the United States. Very prestigious medical schools like Boston University, Stanford University and New York Medical College were among educational institutions that taught homeopathy. In the early 1920s, many schools closed from decreased popularity by influence of the American Medical Association. This, too, was the time when drug companies were becoming more powerful. In other parts of the world the popularity of homeopathy grew and continues to this day. With people becoming more disgruntled

about traditional medicine in the United States, the side effects of drugs and wanting a more holistic health approach, homeopathy has been on the rise for the past 16 years. In preparation of homeopathic remedies, the Law of the Minimum Dose is precedent. This states that the most effective dose for a disorder is the minimum amount necessary to produce a response. The process is known as potentisation, and involves a sequence of progressive dilution and a rhythmic shaking, termed succussion. Normally, 1 part of the source substance is added to 9 parts of water and shaken rhythmically. This is known as a 1x (decimal) dilution or 1 part in 10. One part of this is then taken and added to another 9 parts of water, and again succussed to give a 2x dilution, or 1 part in 100. Similarly, a 3x dilution is 1 part in 1000. Dilutions are also made on a centesimal scale, or 1 part in 100. Classification of the dilutions are used: low potencies: 1x to 30x, or 1c to 15c; medium potencies: 30c to 200c; and high potencies: above 200c. The succussions must transmit some of the energy of the original substance to the neutral matter in which it was diluted, which then is transmitted to the vital force (energy) of the patient like to like, vibrational energy to vibrational energy. It is in the storage of vibratory energy in water molecules during the succussion process that homoeopathic medicine places its scientific explanation of its action. Remedies come in liquids, globules, creams and injectables. A homeopath searches for a substance that produces symptoms in a healthy person that heals those same symptoms in a sick person. The patient is looked at in totality of mind, body and spirit to obtain an entire picture, and a remedy is selected accordingly. Miasms are the underlying root causes for diseases that

The amazing skin benefits of avocado oil ....................................................................

kay, its true at Oliv 426, we LOVE our natural oils from olive, rice bran and macadamia to essential oils like tea tree, peppermint and even catnip, but avocado holds a special place in our hearts. Found almost exclusively in natural skin care products, its not as widely used as many may think, but with a high concentration of vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants, its benefits are incredible.

Moisturizes dry skin

Avocado oil has wonderful natural hydrating abilities and its chemical make-up allows it to be absorbed by the deep-down squamous layer of the skin, as well as retain water, acting as an emollient, all of which promotes soft and supple tissue. Many of our customers with eczema and psoriasis love using an avocado oil lotion to treat flare-ups, particularly in the cooler, drier, fall and winter months.

rejuvenates and attacks signs of aging

Not only can avocado help out with dry skin, it is also believed to mobilize and increase the collagen of connective tissue. More collagen means younger, brighter, more supple-looking skin. Vitamins A, B1 and B2, D and E aid in forming a natural barrier against wrinkles and other signs of aging skin. And last, but certainly not least, vitamin E is also known as a natural antioxidant that protects and repairs your skin, neutralizing the oxidant effect of free radicals, which are molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Want younger looking skin? Try folding avocado oil into your skin care routine as a nighttime moisturizer or repairing serum.

expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Meal frequency, goal of obtaining six-pack and weight gain from nighttime munchies myth ....................................................................
By Karmen nenahlo

Question: A friend of mine eats five to six smaller meals each day and keeps telling me that I should be doing the same. Are there actually any benefits to doing this, especially if three meals per day are satisfying? Answer: Experts have been telling us to eat more frequently throughout the day for years now. And the prevailing wisdom says that increasing your meal frequency will increase your metabolism and help with weight loss. The theories behind these perceived benefits are sound, but unfortunately, much of the research conflicts with these statements. In fact, numerous studies indicate that increasing the number of meals consumed per day has very little impact on overall food intake and body composition. This makes sense since increased frequency doesnt seem to strongly affect total daily energy expenditure or resting metabolic rate either. There may be some benefit when it comes to appetite control and satiety, but the jury is still out on this too. If your energy level waxes and wanes throughout the day, then eating more frequently may be advantageous. But if youre satisfied eating three squares a day, then by all means continue to do so. Question: I would do almost anything to get a nice six-pack. Can you give me some tips and hints? Answer: Absolutely! Not everyone has this particular goal, but the ones who do seem to be very passionate about it. First of all, you have to do some serious core work, focusing on the abdominals, obliques and low back area. In doing this, most people make one of two mistakes. The first mistake is working these muscles too many days of the week. Some think you need to do abs almost every day, but you wouldnt do this for chest, back and legs, so why would you do it for your abdominals? The other common problem is that people dont push themselves when doing core work. Ive seen plenty of people stop their set right when they start to feel the
14
Natures Pathways | september 2012

burn. Others may only use their bodyweight, never thinking that weights might actually challenge them even more. Remember, the harder you work your abdominals, the less youll have to do them and youll get better results. Aside from strength training, the other key components to getting a firm, lean mid-section include cardiovascular exercise and, of course, proper diet. You should try to do cardio five to six days per week, especially if you have some extra flab to lose, and try to follow a well-balanced, caloriecontrolled diet. If you have more specific questions, be sure to schedule a meeting with a trainer at your local Anytime Fitness. Question: My doctor told me that eating after 7 p.m. can lead to weight gain. Is this really true? Answer: I was wondering when this question would come up. This is actually a very common myth that has been perpetuated by consumers and professionals alike for a very long time. Truth be told, there is no strong connection between eating at night and weight gain. Obviously, if your calorie intake exceeds your calorie expenditure, then you will certainly gain weight, but this is true no matter when those calories are consumed. So could the calories taken in at night contribute to weight gain? Sure. But it still comes down to a calories in vs. calories out issue. The idea of avoiding calories at night stems from the fact that most of us are pretty inactive in the evening hours, and if were not active, then filling up our gas tanks seems counter-productive. This is understandable, and I do think that too many people consume far too many calories during the evening hours. However, should you be overly concerned with weight gain if you had to miss a meal during the day or had to eat sporadically because of a busy schedule? That answer is no!

HOMEOPATHY continued from page 12

homeopathy heals. Miasms are considered a peculiar morbid derangement of the vital force. A temporary aggravation of the symptoms is to be expected after the correct remedy is taken and before healing takes place. In acute conditions, aggravation is less noticeable, and more so in chronic conditions. This is called a healing crisis. The duration and intensity of the crisis directly relates to the severity of the condition. Two conditions are necessary for this to occur: the right remedy and a vital force strong enough to cause the reaction. A healing crisis is a good thing! These symptoms disappear in one of four directions: 1. from the center to the circumference of the body; 2. from above downwards; 3. from more vital to less vital organs; and 4. in the reverse order of their onset. These symptoms can go from emotional to physical, and vice versa. With homeopathy being such a detailed and in depth therapy, it is very important to choose a qualified practitioner with proper training and experience. It is not as simple as going to a store and buying a remedy off the shelf if you want to get maximum results and have unnecessary aggravations.

Protects against harmful UV rays

And last, but certainly not least, avocado oil is rich in omega-3s, which are shown to be a highly effective protector from UV solar radiation. Avocado oil has been given the highest ranking by the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology for sunscreen effectiveness when compared to other naturally derived oils, such as peanut, olive and coconut. While not to be used in place of a sunscreen, having avocado oil integrated into facial moisturizers or lotions will help greatly to fight skin damage and aging caused by daily sun exposure. As you can see, from healing dry skin and fighting blemishes to protecting us from the sun and the effects of aging, the benefits of avocado oil are unparalleled. So when selecting your next skin moisturizer, lotion or anti-aging product, try something different and give this amazing oil a whirl. We promise youll adore it in no time, just as we do!

energy healers & new discoveries .................................................................

e are all energy. Everything on this planet and in this universe is energy. So why is it so difficult for some to believe that energy can heal or that a human being, who is composed of energy, can learn to control the flow of energy? And yet in spite of the disbelief that some hold regarding energy or our lack of knowledge about the topic, most of us have, at one time or another, focused our intent and mustered our will in hopes of comforting a child or helping an injured animal. Ever so gently rubbing them and softly blowing their pain away, we smile as we witness them slowly falling asleep, knowing our loving touch has given them comfort. Smiling in our hearts, it seems the longer we hold them the greater the love we feel. Our hearts open even more sending loving energy in every direction. What do you think you did in the time of need? You did what came naturally. You did it without thinking. The child or animal needed you NOW, so you helped them and did what came as an innate part of your cellular structure. By sending our compassion, in our thoughts and with intent, most of us can give comfort to one another. Most of us have done so. Imagine one who is born able to see and feel a little more than most. Its not so hard to believe. Sometimes you just start thinking of an old friend and low and behold the phone rings. Its the old friend. This happens to most of us every so often. Its energy in thought form. Your friend thought of calling you, the energy was sent and you felt the energy two seconds before the phone rang. So again I ask, why is it so hard to believe that someone who can feel just a little more

than most, might be able to learn how to interpret and focus these energies for the purpose of inducing healing? Its not so hard to believe after all, is it? Energy healing is a reality and becomes more and more accepted everyday. The number of competent healers, though small, is increasing over the years. They demonstrate that when you can control and direct energy, it is effective in expediting the healing properties of the body. Its a very exciting time for the healing arts. Today there are many breakthroughs in science. Every day it seems another discovery is made. Now researchers can see the electromagnetic field of the human, also known as the aura. Scientists can now listen to the magnetic fields and decipher its code by computer. On July 17th Stephen Hawking demonstrated to the world this technology. Stephen Hawking is the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and current Director of Research at the Institute for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge. In 1963, he contracted an illness and was given two years to live, and yet, he went on to become a brilliant researcher and Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. Hawking is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein. He has a motor neurone disease that is related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a condition that has progressed over the years. He is now almost completely paralyzed and communicates through a speech generating device. Proving that human beings do broadcast intent and the signals can be deciphered, scientists believe that one human can decipher the codes of another. Every day scientists

find greater proof that there is a reality in the metaphysical. Cosmostologists searching for the missing matter in the universe have stumbled on evidence that demonstrates it is not only possible to see the future, but they claim they have the equations to prove it. It is a very exciting time for myself and other dedicated healers. If we do good work, we know everyday more people are accepting us as part of a well-balanced health and wellness plan. Remember, we are all energy.

The 411 on carcinogens ............................................................

ost families across the globe have been affected by cancer. Affecting millions of lives each year, cancer does not discriminate. A host of factors can determine if a person gets cancer. One of the factors that can influence if a person gets cancer is his or her exposure to carcinogens. Though many people have heard of carcinogens, those same people might be less familiar with what carcinogens actually are, and if theres anything they can do to reduce exposure to and protect themselves from these potentially deadly substances.

what are some examples of substances that are known carcinogens?

what is a carcinogen?

Substances and exposures that can lead to cancer are called carcinogens. Carcinogens do not always cause cancer, and substances considered carcinogens have varying levels of cancer-causing potential. Minimal exposure to certain carcinogens may increase ones risk of getting cancer significantly, while other carcinogens may cause cancer only after prolonged exposure at high levels.

As previously mentioned, not all carcinogens will cause cancer. For instance, some that are known human carcinogens, including alcoholic beverages, will not necessarily cause cancer. But the following are a few of the more recognizable substances considered known human carcinogens. Asbestos Coal, indoor emissions from household combustion Formaldehyde Mineral oils, untreated or mildly treated Neutron radiation Nickel compounds Shale oils Tobacco smoke and smokeless tobacco

Are there different classifications of carcinogens?

what happens when a person has cancer?

Cancer is caused by changes in a cells DNA. This change can be caused by carcinogens, though some carcinogens have no direct impact on DNA. For example, a carcinogen may cause cells to divide at a faster rate than is normal, and that accelerated division can increase the chances that DNA changes will occur.

what are some examples of exposures?

Outside exposures, often referred to as environmental factors, can also be considered carcinogens. The following are a few of the more common environmental factors that qualify as carcinogens. Lifestyle factors: Poor nutrition, use of tobacco and lack of physical activity are a few of the lifestyle exposures that can lead to cancer. Naturally occurring exposures: Exposure to radon gas, infectious agents and ultraviolet light are some of the naturally occurring exposures that can lead to cancer. Medical treatments: Men, women and children who were treated for certain ailments might have been exposed to certain factors that can lead to cancer. These include treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and medications that suppressed the immune system.
www.naturespathways.com

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has spent the last 30 years evaluating the cancer-causing potential of more than 900 likely substances and exposures. That research has enabled the IARC to devise a system for classifying carcinogens as follows: Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans Group 3: Unclassifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans Group 4: Probably not carcinogenic to humans Because testing carcinogens is so difficult (it is unethical to test on humans), many of the carcinogens studied by the IARC are classified as being a probable, possible or unknown risk. Slightly more than 100 of the candidates studied by the IARC are classified as Group 1 carcinogens. Its important to note that, in addition to the IARC rating system, other agencies and groups, including the National Toxicology Program and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, have developed their own rating systems to determine the cancercausing potential of certain substances and exposures. For more information on carcinogens, including a list of known human carcinogens, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

The search for opTimal healTh sTarTs in The mouTh

By Ingo g. Mahn, DDS
In an already toxic world, the last thing anybody needs is to have their own mouth be the source of more toxins. Yet this is often the case mercury from amalgam fillings, toxins from root canals and bacteria from oral infection can all place a tremendous stress on your immune system. Fortunately, every day more and more health care practitioners, including holistic dentists and medical doctors, are coming to the conclusion that you cant achieve good health without a healthy mouth. This is exactly the philosophy on which Dr. Ingo Mahn founded Integrative Dental Solutions (IDS) in Pewaukee. The goal of our practice is to be part of the healthcare team and because of our health-centered approach, referrals from healthcare practitioners, especially MDs, have increased tremendously over the last few years. Often patients dont know what to expect when they go to a holistic dental office, but a visit to Integrative Dental Solutions allays all fears. While the focus is to create a comfortable and relaxing environment, this office is home to some of dentistrys most advanced technologies. Holistic dentistry is advanced dentistry using advanced technology, says Dr. Supriya Shetty, who joined the practice in 2007. The technologies in our office allow us to deliver care in a safer and more efficient manner. Technology such as CEREC a dental CAD/CAM system that allows crowns and onlays to be fabricated in a single visit without the messy impressions is especially convenient for the many patients that travel here from out of town. Other high tech devices include dental lasers, air abrasion, as well as low dose dental x-rays. The most recent acquisition is the Galileos 3D Cone Beam imaging system. With radiation exposure only equivalent to a plane ride from LA to New York, the doctors at Integrative Dental Solutions get incredibly detailed diagnostic images and are able to utilize the device for planning the placement of non-metallic dental implants.

Holistic dentistry is advanced dentistry using advanced technology. The technologies in our office allow us to deliver care in a safer and more efficient manner.

That brings up an important matter in the practice of holistic dentistry what materials to use when restoring the old metallic fillings and crowns. As important as it is to follow proper protocols for safe removal of old restorations, it is equally important to replace them with biocompatible materials. Thats where Dr. Borden, the on-site naturopath who joined the practice in 2004 comes in. Focusing primarily on the oral cavity, Dr. Bordens testing can help determine which materials will be most compatible as well as assist in evaluating existing root canals.

With all of the technology employed at Integrative Dental Solutions, you might be surprised to find out that the doctors here still believe in one of the medical professions oldest tools taking the time to listen! In an age where time spent with the doctor is often most easily measured in seconds, a new patient exam here involves an extensive interview, a thorough clinical examination and a 30-minute private consultation. Patients love the fact that we provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan that spells out exactly what will be done, how long it will take and how much it will cost, says Sarah Damato, long time office manager. Because of the efficiency of our office, patients are often surprised at just how affordable this type of care can be we even use technology to help our patients maximize insurance coverage for these services. This all-encompassing, seemingly futuristic experience provided at Integrative Dental Solutions, along with the personal touch, is what keeps current patients coming back. Susan K. shares her experience in this way: I was concerned about the health aspects of having metal fillings in my mouth. They were starting to fail and I was concerned with having them safely removed. IDS uses all of the latest precautions and made me feel at ease about the procedure. Once it was completed, I experienced no pain. I was confident in their skills and procedure throughout. I am so happy to finally have a dentist I believe in. From talking to the doctors, it is obvious they love what they do and find this type of dentistry to be very gratifying. We love being able to help people attain better oral health and to be part of the team that helps them attain better overall health, they share.

The future of health care is here!

how to make healthy school lunches for kids ......................................................................

onfrontations focusing on diet between children and parents have been around seemingly since the beginning of time. Many children start off as cooperative eaters, anxious to try different types of foods. As they get older, the number of foods theyre apt to eat diminishes, which can make choosing healthy items for lunches and dinners more difficult. It also can make packing lunches for school more challenging. Many initiatives have attempted to improve the quality of school lunches provided by school cafeterias. Government regulations to reduce the amount of fat and sodium in these lunches, and to introduce more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are one such initiative. Parents of students who prefer to bring their own lunches from home may be left wondering how they can create healthy lunches their kids will eat. Considering school lunches must compete with far less healthy yet widely available alternatives, parents will need to be creative in their creation of homemade lunches. Here are some ideas to get you started. PUrChASe A New lUNCh CONTAiNer. There are many different new and innovative lunch containers that can make separating school lunches easy. Few kids want to dig into a brown paper sack and pull out something that has been so squashed its unrecognizable. Partitioned lunch boxes enable you to pack different items together where they can be stored separately. The divisions also help you remember to include foods from the basic food groups, such as a fruit, vegetable, protein, starch and dairy item.

Children may not be inclined to eat loose pieces of fruit. But if the fruit is stuck on skewers or served with a low-fat dipping sauce or caramel, it may look more appealing. ats are living longer than in the past and regular veterinary visits help contribute to your cats long and healthy life. Cats age faster than people do, so health problems can develop more rapidly, especially in older animals. Dramatic changes in health can occur in as little as three to six months. We want to catch the small problems before they become major medical conditions. With todays medical and nutritional knowledge, the lifespan of an indoor cat can easily approach 15 to 20 years. Cats over 10 years of age benefit from physical and diagnostic exams every six months (which is equal to every two years for people) in order to detect illnesses early.

Green tea
(Camellia sinensis) ..............................................

ll types of tea (green, black and oolong) are produced from the Camellia sinensis plant using different methods. Fresh leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant are steamed to produce green tea. Green tea and green tea extracts have also been used for improving mental alertness, aiding in weight loss, lowering cholesterol levels and protecting skin from sun damage.

what green tea is used for

Green tea and green tea extracts, such as its component EGCG, have been used to prevent and treat a variety of cancers, including breast, stomach and skin cancers.

how green tea is used

Green tea is usually brewed and drunk as a beverage. Green tea extracts can be taken in capsules and are sometimes used in skin products.

what the science says

Laboratory studies suggest that green tea may help protect against or slow the growth of certain cancers, but studies in people have shown mixed results. Some evidence suggests that the use of green tea preparations improves mental alertness, most likely because of its caffeine content. There are not enough reliable data to determine whether green tea can aid in weight loss, lower blood cholesterol levels or protect the skin from sun damage. NCCAM supports studies to learn more about the components in green tea and their effects on conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

green tea extracts. This problem does not seem to be connected with green tea infusions or beverages. Although these cases are very rare and the evidence is not definitive, experts suggest that concentrated green tea extracts be taken with food, and that people should discontinue use and consult a heath care practitioner if they have a liver disorder or develop symptoms of liver trouble, such as abdominal pain, dark urine or jaundice. Green tea and green tea extracts contain caffeine. Caffeine can cause insomnia, anxiety, irritability, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea or frequent urination in some people. Green tea contains small amounts of vitamin K, which can make anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin, less effective. how Growing Power keeps growing

The Growing Power Harvest ....................................................................
By Will Allen

very year I farm, it never ceases to amaze me how vulnerable we are to the natural forces that be. I remember years ago several of my outdoor crops drowned in shocking floods that swept through Southeastern Wisconsin. It was devastating for me to have labored endless hours on the land, planting seeds and transplants, only to have a few days of relentless rainfall wash it all away. Those are the risks we take as farmers. And, with all great risks, despite the hardships, oftentimes come great reward. This year our risks have paid off. We constructed over 50 hoop houses (greenhouse-type structures) throughout Milwaukee and installed raised garden beds comprised of our moisturerich and nutrient-dense compost in each. Despite the dry and intense heat, our crops not only survived, but flourished, both in the hoop houses and at our outdoor farms. We credit the compost, whose ability to retain moisture and provide just the right amount of nutrition needed for the plants to grow was especially beneficial during such a hot and dry summer.

Now we have a bountiful harvest we distribute throughout Milwaukee daily via farm stands, stores, restaurants and our signature program, the Farm-toCity Market Basket. Our market baskets are chock full of vegetables we grow, including squash, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, corn, carrots, salad mix, micro-greens and so much more. The vegetables are complemented with locally grown fruits when available. If local fruits are not available, we order in the freshest and most affordable fruits so we can provide a well-rounded food basket filled with enough food to feed a family of four for a week!

For folks who want to pick and choose what to eat, we offer our locally grown foods at farm stands throughout Milwaukee. We also sell at the Fox Point Farmers Market and newly established Growing Power Deli and Food Market on Martin Luther King Drive on Milwaukees north side. boosting metabolism with diet and nutrition ......................................................................................

By Tony Bednarowski

lients, and just about everyone I meet, who learn that I am a nutritionist ask me one question all the time: How can I boost my metabolism? Metabolism is simply the total of all body processes that burn calories your basal metabolic rate plus your activity factor. When it comes to improving your metabolism, theres good news and bad news.

first the bad news:

Most of what controls your metabolism isnt completely under your control. Some people are genetically blessed with a highburning metabolism. They didnt ask for it, they were just born with it. On average, men have a metabolism that is 10 to 15 percent higher than women, mainly because of their larger size and greater muscle mass. Whether youre a man or a woman, your metabolism naturally decreases with age. Scientists have estimated that the average persons metabolism slows about 5 percent per decade, beginning at age 40, as we lose muscle mass our body fat increases.

Now the good news:

Your metabolism doesnt have to remain stagnant or take a nosedive. You can burn more calories and lose more weight just by changing the way you think about eating and moving.
fOOD fixeS fOr MeTAbOliSM

Remember, our basal metabolic rate includes the energy we need for body processes, including digestion. About 10 percent of our calories are used to process the food we eat. As the calories are burned, our bodies generate heat. This phenomenon, known as the thermic effect of food, is influenced by how much, how often, and what we eat. In addition, food can directly affect metabolism by altering the way the body functions, which changes the amount of energy it needs.

My recommendations for maximizing metabolism:

eAT AT leAST 1,200 CAlOrieS Per DAy

Although it is generally true that eating a low-calorie diet will help you take off weight, if you eat too few calories, your metabolism will get slower and slower as it tries to conserve energy. As your metabolism crashes, the weight you take off will most likely creep back on over time. Plus, youll be more likely to binge on junk food if you reduce your calories by too much.

eAT eVery Three TO fOUr hOUrS

A regular meal schedule helps keep your body working to digest and absorb foods. Between breakfast and bed, aim to eat a meal or snack every three to four hours. And try to eat breakfast within 90 minutes of rising. People who regularly eat a healthy breakfast are more likely to control their weight. If you wait to eat until youre really ravenous, youre more likely to overeat later in the day. Also, breakfast helps fire up your metabolism after a full night of fasting, so break the fast.

eAT PrOTeiN wiTh eVery MeAl

All foods contribute to the thermic effect, which means that all foods carbohydrates, fats and proteins help to give the metabolism a gentle nudge higher when we eat them. Protein has the greatest thermic effect of all and can increase metabolism by helping to maintain and build muscle mass.

Get the facts about mold and your health ......................................................................

old can grow in many areas of a home. Though not always dangerous, mold can, in certain instances, cause serious illness. Experts estimate that there are tens of thousands of different types of mold in the world. A type of fungi, molds are single-celled or multicellular organisms without chlorophyll that reproduce by spores and live by absorbing nutrients from organic matter. Fungi can be classified as molds, mushrooms, rusts, mildews and yeasts. Some of the common types of molds found indoors include cladosporium, alternaria, penicillium and aspergillus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that molds can be a health hazard to some people. Some individuals are more sensitive to molds than others, and may experience anything from a mild allergic reaction to severe symptoms, such as trouble breathing or other complications with their lungs. Mold spores travel very easily through the air and can also travel on people and pets. Coming in contact with mold in one location and then traveling to another can cause spores that hitched a ride to dislodge in the new area. People who may have never had mold problems at home before can find that mold quickly takes root if mold spores have been accidentally brought into a home. In addition to moist areas, molds flourish in other conditions as well. fOOD SOUrCe: Molds are not picky eaters and can feed on various materials, including wood, fabric, wallpaper and drywall. Air: Although mold needs oxygen to grow, mold fares best in areas that are poorly ventilated. wArMTh: Mold can grow in temperatures between 40 and 110 F. Therefore, unless its below freezing outdoors, theres a good chance mold spores are thriving. Molds versatility to live in a variety of areas and feed on just about anything makes it a formidable foe. But there are natural ways to tackle it. Mold thrives in moist conditions, so removing the source of moisture is the primary way to control mold growth. Invest in a dehumidifier if your home is plagued by moisture. Dehumidifiers

are especially useful in basements and crawlspaces where moisture tends to be a problem. Its also good to avoid using bleach to address a mold problem. Although bleach is an excellent disinfectant, it is not always successful in killing mold spores. The most it may do is whiten areas where the mold is growing. Plus, bleach has its own strong aroma and can be noxious to breathe in at high doses. Instead of bleach, consider all-natural methods of controlling mold. Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold. Using it in a spray bottle on mold can help to kill it and keep it at bay. Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract are also very effective at eliminating mold. Unlike other methods of mold removal, grapefruit seed extract does not have an odor. Keeping a home ventilated is another way to fight mold. Mold prefers somewhat stagnant conditions, so allowing fresh air into the house can make it harder for mold to thrive. In bathrooms and kitchens, use exhaust fans or open windows to reduce the humidity and moisture left behind. Mold can be an irritant to people who are sensitive to the spores, but in many cases, mold is more of an eyesore and a nuisance than something a homeowner needs to worry about. Using some smart strategies to reduce its growth can keep mold under control.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and longevity ......................................................................

By Kyle Smith, dipl oM

ou often hear, Youre only as young as you feel. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is probably more accurate to say, Youre only as young as your parents make you feel. In Eastern philosophy, longevity is finite and predetermined by the parents at conception. The health levels of the mother and father, as well as the degree of their yin and yang energies, are combined to give a child his or her own longevity blueprint. In turn, this impacts the formation of an individuals body structure and organ development thus laying the foundation for all future growth and health. Following that initial formation, leftover energy is stored in the kidneys, with one possessing more yin energy and the other more yang. This type of energy is what is known as congenital essence. Over time, the supply of this essence begins to lessen, as we draw from it daily to remain healthy and vital. In fact, when we consider the effects of aging (hair loss, decline in eyesight and hearing, and a longer time span to heal), they are due to the bodys inability to be fully nourished by our natural essence. However, everything we eat, drink and breathe works in conjunction with this essence, so there are opportunities to fortify the supply and enhance longevity. Good sources of food and air inhibit the pull from the congenital essence in the kidneys, and allow us to feel better longer. TCM considers a world of factors as they relate to dietary factors, including components such as color, appearance and intent. For longevity, one group of recommended foods is all black such as blackberries or black sesame seeds because the kidneys are associated with black specifically. Black foods can, on a mild level, help nourish and tone this organ system. Seeds are another variety of food used to help strengthen this stored essence. Within nature, seeds are the storehouses for procreation; their inherent energy aimed toward new birth provides a viable external resource, rather than depleting the internal essence of the kidneys. Walnuts are a great example their shape, which is similar to that
Natures Pathways | september 2012

of the kidneys themselves, signifies a positive rejuvenating quality. Additional foods suggested for enhancing longevity are microalgae, such as chlorella, as well as spirulina and fish. These are high in nucleic acids and B12, which contribute to initiate growth and development. Almonds, milk and clarified butter assist with bone strength, while nettles serve as a kidney tonic to thicken hair, enrich the blood and vitalize the body. Lifestyle choices are meshed with diet. Todays world is very demanding. Work, relationships and even downtime activities can amass stress. Studies have shown conclusively that stress negatively impacts a persons well-being, including longevity. Staying focused for hours on end, day in and day out, will quickly deplete the stores of congenital essence. In contrast, making time to relax and rest will enable the stored energy to last longer. TCM also offers other treatments, such as acupuncture and herbal remedies, to boost kidney function and enrich longevity. Acupuncture targets specific points that tone the kidneys, allowing for a less-restricted flow of energy along the bodys internal pathways. One primary complaint among older patients is back pain, which happens because of the depletion of energy. Focusing on key points to strengthen the kidneys also keeps the back supple and pain-free. Herbal supplements are created from natural elements that initiate, sustain or protect life. Examples are prepared rehmannia root, deer antler and tortoise shell all used to help build bone mass. Royal jelly and/or bee pollen are also excellent sources of many nutrients that work to create vital levels of energy and longevity.
