A standard programming language (C) and operating system (UNIX) are used along with a proprietary real-time OS (CDOS), optimized for the C-DOT DSS MAX applications. The generic nature of software across different products and applications ensures uniformity in feature implementation and up gradation.

Features of C-DOT Flexible Architecture Modular Packaging Evolutionary approach Reliability Large installation base Repair and Test facilities

The briefed description of each of the above points is as follows: FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE:

The flexible architecture of the C-DOT DSS MAX results from a loosely coupled network approach. This allows new functionalities to be added without requiring any change in the existing hardware. The inter-processor communication is message-based, and well-defined interfaces exist between various software subsystems. The C-DOT DSS MAX system design is highly fault-tolerant. For redundancy, all the controllers, message switches and power supply units are duplicated or have N+X redundancy for load sharing. This flexible architecture, together with widespread redundancy, ensures high system availability.

MODULAR PACKAGING:

The modular architecture of the C-DOT DSS MAX ensures cost effectiveness and protection of investment as the demand in a service area grows. It is possible to begin small in a potentially high growth area and to increase the exchange capacity later, simply by adding more modules to the existing exchange. The CDOT DSS MAX product packaging utilizes standard cabinets, Frames and cards. Due to minimum cabling required across cabinets and high level of connectorisation, the C-DOT DSS MAX products can be installed quickly and easily.
EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH:

The C-DOT DSS MAX design follows an evolutionary approach in order to: introduce new services to the users meet service requirements of the network operators take advantage of the technological advancements taking place in telecom provide value additions provide cost-effective incremental capacity expansion. The integration of CCS7 and network synchronization capabilities in the C-DOT DSS MAX is examples of such an approach to meet the requirements of the network operators. The switch also provides Service Switching Point (SSP) functionality for Intelligent Network (IN) services, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) services, and V5.1/V5.2 interfaces for the access network. New functionalities are implemented in additional subsystems, which interwork with

Other functional subsystems present both in the existing and the new switches. As a result, the switches installed in the field in the 1980s are upgradable with new features and services.
RELIABILITY:

The C-DOT DSS MAX products meet the high reliability requirements of a modern digital switching system. Strict quality control measures are adhered to right from the component procurement stage up to the final system delivery. Quality components are chosen to ensure low fault rate under extreme Environmental conditions. The quality system consists of manual and automated inspections during various stages of manufacture. Quality software delivery is ensured by well defined software engineering practices at every development stage. Automated feature testing and detailed validation is carried out before propagating any new software link or bug fixes to the field.
LARGE INSTALLATION BASE:

The appropriateness of the C-DOT DSS MAX products at all levels of the national telecom network is borne out by the fact that a large number of rural, ILT, toll and urban exchanges from C-DOT are installed in the Indian telecom network. Today , the C-DOT DSS MAX exchanges cover as much as over 30% of the total Installed base in the country.
REPAIR AND TEST FACILITIES:

C-DOT has established regional repair centers for card repairs all over India for ensuring low MTTR and, consequently, low inventory requirements and investments. The customer support cells at Delhi and Bangalore are manned by C-

DOT staff and operate 24 hours a day for monitoring the fault handling process. The cell also provides support for exchange dimensioning, Equipment planning and engineering the system to the site-specific needs.

TYPES OF C-DOT MAX

In C-DOT DSS MAX, two types of configurations are envisaged at Central Module level depending on the number of Base Modules connected to it. The first one is MAX-L (Main automatic exchange-L) which supports a maximum of 16 Base Modules and the other is MAX-XL (Main Automatic Exchange-Extra Large) which supports a maximum of 32 Base Modules.
OVERVIEW OF SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

C-DOT DSS MAX Exchanges can be configured from following four basic modules Base Module (BM) Central Module (CM) Administrative Module(AM) Input Output Module(IOM)

BASE MODULE:

The base module is the basic growth unit of the system and interfaces the external world to the switch. The interfaces may be subscriber lines, analog and digital trunks, CCM and PBX lines. Each Base Module dedicated for lines can interface up to 2024 terminations. The number of Base Modules directly corresponds to the exchange size. It carries out majority of call processing functions. In its stand alone application as Single Base Module, the Base Module acts as an independent switching system and provides switching of up to 1500 lines and 100 trunks. In such a case, it directly interfaces with the Input OUTPUT Module for bulk data storage and operations and maintenance functions. It can also act as a Remote Switching Unit and interfaces with the host exchange over 2Mbps digital links. These units can be used as single unit or as a cluster of more than one unit to serve a group of subscribers. Base module is basically divided into two categories. First one is normal base module or co-located base module situated in the main exchange adjacent to the central module. In the second category there is a remote base module which is the basic building block of remote switch unit placed geographically apart from the main exchange. This Remote Base Module can be easily coupled with the existing C-DOT DSS MAX products with some minor exchanges in the hardware. The remote base module is capable of performing all functions which is possible in normal base module with the help of the input output module situated in the main exchange. The RBM however provides local switching when the link with the host exchange is down.

CENTRAL MODULE

Central module consists of a message switch and space switch to provide inter module communication and perform voice switching between Base Modules. It acts as a space stage in T-S-T Switching. It provides control and message communication between any two base modules and between base modules and administrative module for operation and maintenance functions .it also provide clock and synchronization on a centralized basis to all base modules.
ADMINISTRATIVE MODULE

Administrative Module performs system level resource allocation and processing function on a centralized basis. It performs all the memory and time intensive call processing support functions and also administration and maintenance functions. It communicates with all base modules via the central module .it supports the input output module for providing man-machine interface. Functional modules i.e. Central Module and Administrative Module are physically accommodated in Central Module cabinet rack.
INPUT OUTPUT MODULE

Input output module is a powerful duplex computer system that interfaces various secondary storage devices like disk drives, cartridge tape drive and floppy drive .it supports printers and video display units that are used for man-machine communication. All the bulk data processing and storage is done in the module

which is basically consisting of two similar Input Output Processors working in duplex configuration for redundancy purposes.

ALARM DISPLAY PANEL(ADP-MM)

Apart from the four basic modules,ADP-Multi Module is required for MAX-L system.ADP raises audio visual alarms for attracting human attention when any hardware/software faults are resulted during normal operation. It communicates with Administrative Module via HDLC link.

Thus,a C-DOT DSS MAX-L Exchange,depending upon its size and

application will consist of two or more Base modules a Central Module,an Admistrative Module,an Input Output Module and an ADP-MM.
