EEE 54 Design Problem 1 Switch-mode Light Dimmer Using Multivibrators Objective The objective of this experiment is to design and

implement a dimming circuit for a 12V light bulb using multivibrators. Background The intensity of light produced by a bulb is proportional to the voltage applied across (or current through) it. The voltage may be varied using a linear or switch-mode regulator (chopper). In the first method, the light bulb is connected in series with a variable resistance and a voltage source, as shown. The voltage across the bulb is varied by varying the series resistance. If the resistance is high, less current flows through the bulb, resulting in low light intensity. On the other hand, when the resistance is low, more current would flow, resulting in high light intensity. The second method is implemented by connecting a switch in series with the bulb and voltage source. The switch is periodically toggled between ON and OFF. When the switch is ON, the voltage across the bulb is V S. When the switch is off, the current through the bulb is zero.

The light intensity is proportional to the average voltage across the bulb, which is equal to T VAVE=VS ON =VS d , where d is the duty cycle = T ON / T. The flicker would not be evident if the T switching frequency is high. The light intensity is varied by changing the duty cycle of the switch. This is accomplished by driving the switch (an NPN transistor) with a variable duty cycle astable multivibrator. Design Problem 1. Implement a variable duty cycle astable multivibrator using the circuit/s discussed in the lecture. The specs of your design will be assigned by the instructor. 2. Connect your transistor drive circuit (i.e. the multivibrator) to the switch and bulb and demonstrate that you can vary the light intensity.
