a Victorian-style front porch,

fowers, an American fag and
signs, one of which informs that
there will be sandwiches available
soon, but it doesnt prepare you
for the lovely fragrances and burst
of color from the pretty scarves,
bags, jewelry and gifts as you walk
in the door.
Lynns Boutique, Salon and
Massage business, located at 5324
Main St. in Stephens City across
the street from the Outlet Store,
is frmly established as a charm-
ing and afordable place to get
nails done, but Lynn would like
people to know that theres also a
boutique and tanning and hydro
massage beds inside.
And by October, Owner Lynn
Grove will be making deli-type
sandwiches every morning in her
state-inspected kitchen that shop-
pers can stop in for all day long.
Also, if ordered ahead of time she
will provide cheese, fruit and veg-
etable party trays, which are as
beautiful as foral bouquets.
I learned to make the pretty
food plates in Vietnam, she said.
Lynn came to the U.S. 14 years
ago from Can To, Vietnam and
has been in business for eight
years in Stephens City where she
lives with her husband Kevin and
eighth-grade son Bryan She is
happy with her success so far.
People here have been very
nice. I wouldnt have made it with-
out support from the community.
Im thankful for that. It has made
it happen for me, she said.
Lynn also credits hard work as
an ingredient for the success of
her business.
I had $100 in my pocket when
I frst came here, she said.
Starting out by obtaining her
license at a nail school in Alexan-
dria, she then gained experience
by doing nails in salons in Front
Royal and Winchester for four
years before she opened her own
business.
Tis is the third home for the
salon in its eight years in Stephens
City, but Lynn says she has fnally
found the right spot for it-a build-
ing with enough room for every-
thing she ofers.
Shelves along the walls hold a
rainbow of more than 500 colors
of nail polish. Te variety of nail
art includes: application of shellac
on real nails; silk wraps, French
tips, pink and white; acrylic
application; and more. Another
beauty option is facial, arm and
leg waxing, and full-service mani-
cure/pedicures with a hot stone
massage and a warm lotion mask.
Especially rejuvenating and
healthful is the deep-tissue hy-
dro-massage bed which is like a
twin-size water bed with ripples
of water traveling up and down
underneath the body. Te client
can program the session to cus-
tomize the pressure and control
which body zones will be con-
centrated on and settings may be
changed at any time.

lieves stress, and removes toxins,
said Lynn.

WEEK
Frederick County Crime of the Week - August 27, 2012
This weeks Crime of the Week is a burglary and larceny at
Throx Country Store, located at 1488 Senseny Road on July 22,
2012. The owner reported that unknown suspect(s) forcibly
entered the store and removed several cartons of cigarettes.
No other items were reported missing, but several items were
reportedly knocked over by the suspect(s) while inside the
store.
If you have any information regarding a suspect or suspect
vehicle in this incident, please contact the Crime Solvers Hot-
line at (540) 665 TIPS (8477). Information leading to the arrest
of a suspect may result in a reward of up to $1,000.

Another claim made by health

and she has regular customers
who come in every day. Its highly
afordable as a one-time experi-
ence, but she ofers a monthly fat
rate for unlimited access.
Along with her business, she is
a student at Lord Fairfax Com-
munity College studying science
and working toward a degree in
pharmacy. Eventually she will at-
tend Shenandoah University.
Its been my goal in life, but I
had to take some time of from

Ill get my degree by the time Im
60, she said with a laugh.
She hopes to have someone to
take care of the salon when she
goes back to school and has run
the salon by herself up to about
a month ago when Manicurist/

FCPS Partners with Lord Fairfax Health District to Administer
Youth Risk Behaviors Survey on September 14
Frederick County Public Schools is partnering with the Virginia Department of Healths Lord Fairfax
Health District and other school divisions in the Lord Fairfax Planning District (Clarke, Frederick, War-
ren, Shenandoah, and Page Counties and the City of Winchester) to administer the Center for Disease
Control and Preventions Youth Risk Behavior Survey to all eighth and 11th grade students on Friday,
September 14. Students will be asked to complete the survey during one of their regular class periods.
Completing the survey should only take about 30 minutes. Tere is no physical test or exam involved.
Schools Superintendent David Sovine says, Our school division decided to participate in the Youth Risk
Behavior Survey because there is strong evidence that healthy students learn better. To improve academic
achievement and help ensure that students do not engage in behaviors that put their health at-risk, it is
critical to implement quality health programs, policies and activities based on data regarding the health-
risk behaviors in which students are engaged. Te data gathered through this survey will help local public
health ofcials and our schools identify areas of concern so that they can be addressed in the future.
Te survey is designed to provide baseline data on six types of health risk behaviors that contribute to
the leading causes of death and disability among young adults, including: behaviors that contribute to
unintentional injuries and violence; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexu-
ally transmitted diseases; alcohol and other drug use; tobacco use; unhealthy dietary behaviors; and inad-
equate physical activity. Te survey also will assess the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth in
the region.
Te results will help the Lord Fairfax Health District identify factors that may afect the health of the
areas youth. Te results also will provide the data needed to access certain sources of funding in order to
improve health, education, and prevention programs in our community.
Te survey will be administered in a manner designed to protect student privacy. Students will com-
plete the self-administered questionnaire by recording their responses directly in a booklet that can be
scanned by a computer, on an answer sheet or on a survey booklet which contains no personal identi-
fers. Student responses will remain anonymous and students should be encouraged to provide truthful
responses.
Te parents of eighth and 11th grade students who do not want their child to participate in the survey,
may opt them out by completing the opt-out form that is being sent home with students on September 4.
No action is required by parents who want their child to participate.

Te winning house in the ultimate backyard makeover
Te $10,000.00 Grand Prize win-
ner for Prosperity Landscapings re-
cent contest Te Ultimate Backyard
Makeover has been announced.
Tom and Kristy Steele of West Vir-
ginia won the $10,000.00 project and
are now the proud recipients of a
new paver walkway leading from the
driveway to their brand new paver
patio. Te walkway and patio have
been accented with new plant beds.
Te contest was a combined efort
of Prosperity Landscaping of Ste-
phen City, Va., who provided design
consultation and all the construc-
tion on the project, PAVESTONE
of Hagerstown, Md. who provided
all the construction materials and
Clear Channel Radio of Winchester,
Va. who ran the contest over the air
on three diferent radio stations and
provided advertizing support.
Over 200 people entered the con-
test by providing pictures of their
back yards along with a short para-
graph on why they felt deserving of
the Makeover. Of the 200 contes-
tants, Prosperity had the difcult
task of narrowing that number down
to the top three. Te pictures and
paragraphs of these three contes-
tants were then put on Clear Chan-
nels web site where Clear Channel
listeners would submit votes for their
favorite. After more than 1500 votes
the Steeles emerged the winner.

Middletown, and Luray, VA Lord Fairfax Community College
(LFCC) is now ofering adult learners the opportunity to explore ca-
reer options and plan for a career. Trough a grant from the U.S.
Department of Labor, LFCC has employed two adult career coaches
and two job placement coordinators to assist with career assess-
ments, career planning/coaching, selecting a program of study, iden-
tifying funding options for classes, developing interview skills, and
writing resumes. Te grant, administered by Tidewater Community
College and the Virginia Community College System, was awarded
for three years under the Trade Adjustment Act Community College
Training Program. Virginia is one of six programs in the nation to
receive funding.
Tis new program provides support to individuals in our com-
munity who are considering new careers, said LFCC President, Dr.
Cheryl Tompson-Stacy. LFCC is excited about this additional op-
portunity to help people in our community achieve their employ-
ment goals through education and training.
LFCCs program focuses on individuals who have lost a job or
anticipating layof, those who are interested in health care careers,
and veterans and their spouses. However, anyone who is unem-
ployed or underemployed is eligible for assessment services. Indi-
viduals are provided services in cooperation with the Virginia Em-
ployment Commission and the local One Stop Job Centers, who may
be able to provide funds for tuition and supportive services. Once
an individual has identifed a potential career feld, coaches work
with them to identify training and education needs. Te job place-
ment coordinators then work with individuals to prepare them for
employment.

As the heat of summer days has
given way to the cool evenings
of early September, high school
football has made its return to
Frederick County. Te 2011 sea-
son brought a great deal of suc-
cess to the proud traditions of the
regions high schools, but each of
them is looking to achieve even
greater post-season success in
2012. As always, the path toward
the kind of success that leads to
the chill of football clashes on
November evenings in the play-
ofs starts in the grueling heat of
summer practices and the humid
evenings of the opening weeks of
a season.
Te Handley Judges seek to
build on the 2011 season, which
saw considerable success de-
spite their eventual playof loss
to Liberty. Te Judges opened
their season at home on Satur-
day August 25, defeating the Do-
minion Titans from Sterling in a
come-from-behind victory that
belied their undeniable youth at
many key positions. Te follow-
ing weeks contest was less kind
to the Judges, as they fell short
against Harrisonburg 32-21. On
Friday, Handley will travel up I-
81 to face of against powerhouse
Martinsburg. While the Bulldogs
will be favored heavily, the young

Coming of a heartbreaking
overtime playof defeat in 2011,
the Sherando Warriors are hoping
for another shot in the post-sea-
son this year. Last year the War-
riors fought the vaunted Bulldogs
of Martinsburg in a close defeat,
but this year was quite diferent.
In their opening game of the year,
Sherando was blown out 38-0 at
Martinsburg by the immensely
talented home team. Te fol-
lowing week saw a much closer
contest, but the same bitter result
as the Warriors lost to the Mus-
selman Applemen 21-19. Tis
Friday, the Warriors open their
home schedule in Stephens City
and attempt to get back on track
against Washington.
Te Millbrook Pioneers are
coming of a disappointing sea-
son in 2011 and their 2012 sea-
son opened with a disappointing
41-21 loss to Tuscarora at home.
However, the Pioneers showed
the strength of character that
growing programs need as they
defeated Broadway the following
week 27-14. Now at 1-1, Mill-
brook will attempt to build on
last weeks success as they face

Tailgating is as American a
tradition as football itself, but
foodborne illness can be a game
changer if proper food han-
dling practices arent followed,
said Cheryl Luptowski, Public
Information Ofcer for NSF
International. Taking simple
precautions can keep you, your
friends and family safe and let
you concentrate on enjoying the
game.
Here are some tips to keep in
mind when tailgating:
1. Avoid false starts; Bringing a
meat thermometer to the game
will help you avoid taking food
of the grill too soon and serving
it undercooked to your fellow
fans. You cant rely on your eyes
alone, so use an NSF-certifed
food thermometer to make sure
foods are cooked to the proper
minimum internal tempera-
ture: Whole or ground poultry

whole (not ground) pork, beef,
veal 145 F with a three-min-
ute rest time
2. Put your marinade on the
sidelines. When preparing for
the big day, keep your marinade
in bounds. If you need some for
basting, do not use marinade
that has come into contact with
raw meat. Instead, set aside a
small amount of prepared mari-
nade in a separate dish and bring
it to the game.
3. Play defense: Take defensive
measures to protect you and
your family against germs by:
Bringing wet wipes and
hand sanitizer to the game.
Make sure you sanitize your
hands frequently, especially

after putting raw meat on
the grill and before eating.
Bringing two sets of utensils
and dishes if grilling raw
meat one for use with
raw foods, the other for
cooked foods.
Having a plastic bag handy
to store dirty utensils or
dishes that have touched
raw meats to prevent
spreading germs in a cooler
or in your car after the pre-
game meal.
4. Prepare for kickof.
Cooking outside makes it chal-
lenging to avoid cross-contami-
nation. Prepare for the big day
by packing three coolers: one for
your raw meats, another with
your pre-made foods (e.g. potato
salad, vegetables) and a third for
your beverages. Pack the food at
the bottom of the cooler and the
ice on top to better insulate the

food and keep it at a safe tem-
perature of 40 F. As partygoers
often open coolers to get drinks,
pack beverages in a separate
cooler to avoid frequent opening
of the coolers containing perish-
able foods.
5. Dont let your food go into
overtime. While its tempting
to display your game day food
spread, it should not be left out
for more than two hours (or one
hour on days over 90 F) to avoid
bacterial growth. Keep perish-
able foods in coolers to help

Alleged White House gatecrasher
and Real Housewives of DC star
Tareq Salahi will have his entire
gubernatorial campaign taped for a
reality documentary to air after the
November election, according to
campaign ofcials.
It is perhaps the frst-ever state-
wide political campaign flmed for
an independent reality show. Pub-
lic taping will begin at a campaign
kickof at Salahis Linden, Va. home
Sept. 16.
Although he and his ex-wife and
Real Housewives reality tv co-star
Michaele refused to answer ques-
tions before a congressional panel
probing their attendance at Presi-
dent Obamas frst state dinner, Mr.
Salahi appears to have come around
to embrace the incident that imme-
diately thrust him into the national
spotlight and global stage. Te event
is being billed as the Crash the
Candidate BBQ. In addition to the
media and a camera crew of four,
the event ofers entertainment, a
DJ, and a Hollywood green screen
photo op. Further homage to the

Te flm is tentatively called In It
To Win It and is being produced by
veteran PBS executive John Camp-
bell who now runs his own pro-
duction company. In a statement
Campbell said he approached Sala-
hi about doing the project not out of
any political motivation but rather
to focus on the human interest ele-
ment. Here we have a guy whos tri-
umphs and tribulations have been
aired globally...and he could have
easily hidden for a few years...yet he
didnt, Campbell said.
It is his frst political flm. Camp-
bells previous documentaries have
focused on a diverse range of topics
from U.S. Air Force Tunderbirds
to a Canadian folk/rock band to a
trip through the Adirondacks in a
1976 motor home.
Salahi concedes that one of his
motivations to run for governor
occurred in April when one of his
potential opponents, Va. Attorney
General Ken Cuccinelli announced
a lawsuit alleging that Salahis wine
tour company had violated the Vir-
ginia Consumer Protection Act, a
charge Salahi says he denies. Salahi
fled paperwork to enter the Repub-
lican primary the next day. Salahis
spokesman Eric Miller took a shot
at Cuccinelli in a statement to
CNN, saying the attorney general
had wasted huge sums of taxpayer
dollars on witch hunt type investi-
gations, including the lawsuit.
Salahi says he plans to announce
major pillars of his campaign plat-
form at the BBQ kickof but says
that a large focus will be on sup-
porting the military, both as an
economic force in the state and of
course the troops as well as boost-
ing Virginias small businesses in-
cluding the agriculture industry
and the economy in general. Salahis
family has decades of experience in
the wine trade.
Salahi currently has two co-
managers for the campaign, one of
whom is a former DoD stafer, Mark
Vargas and the other a former White
House stafer during the Reagan ad-
ministration, Andrea Ross.
Ross said the flmmakers arent
paying for any of the campaign ex-
penses and that royalties to Salahi,
if any, will likely come after the elec-
tion when the movie will air on an
unnamed national television net-
work or cable channel.
Ross describes herself as a fairly
private person and isnt quite sure
what to expect when she ends up
on a tv show. Tis isnt Real House-
wives and I am not a drama queen.
Tis is a serious business to us.
Were looking forward to getting
out there and meeting people and
getting people enthusiastic about
not just the democratic process but
about Virginia and her future. Peo-
ple havent seen this side of Tareq
before, she said. Most people dont
even know that he has deep politi-
cal roots in Virginia and has served
three diferent Governors both Re-
publican and Democrat.
Ross says for now they are fo-
cused on the kickof event. We are
all looking forward to having people
in the local community be a part of
this. Anyone in the local commu-
nity. Tere is going to be a national
television show and they are a part
of what we booted a king out to be
able to do, she said.
We are excited for them to be a
part of that. Lets face it, it is an ex-
citing thing.

stage is that of a refned rock band whose music transcends their age.
Covering everything from Electric Avenue to Electric Feel, Threesound
