Could you picture yourself
running 25 miles, 50 miles or
maybe even 100 miles in one day?
If you cant imagine yourself
running through various ter-
rains, on trails and up and down
mountains, you most likely cant
imagine a Voorhees resident run-
ning the distance.
Miriam Gilberts recent race
was the 16th annual 24 Hour
Around the Lake Race. The race
had four options from which to
choose the 24-hour ultra, 12-
hour ultra, 24-hour relay and a
full marathon. Gilbert, 53, decid-
ed to run the 24-hour race. She
managed to run 83.32 miles in 22
hours, 10 minutes and 31 seconds.
I came in third in the womens
open, Gilbert said.
Ultra running consists of races
that are longer than the typical
marathon. Usually, a traditional
marathon is approximately 26
miles.
For Gilbert, training is as sim-
ple as her favorite activities. Hik-
ing, trail running and gardening
are her race training methods,
but running is more than being
physically fit.
Gilberts husband, son and
daughter are there for all of her
races supporting her by becom-
ing her pacers and crew.

Running, swimming and kick-
ing a ball are some activities
many people take for granted.
Usually, we take the simplest
things, such as our eyesight or
our motor skills and use them
without thinking about those
who might have a disability im-
pairing them from doing certain
activates. At Camp Little Rock,
children with disabilities spent
one week participating in sports
activities such as archery, kick-
ball, swimming, fishing and
more.
The Little Rock Foundation
(TLRF) was founded in 1997. This
nonprofit organization is named
after Rocco Fiorentino of
Voorhees. Rocco was born with
Retinopathy of Prematurely
(ROP), which causes his blind-
ness.
Roccos mother, Tina, runs the
camp to help children with dis-
abilities have similar experiences
in sports than children without
disabilities.
Visually impaired and blind is
the key component for the pro-
gram, said Fiorentino.

the Fifth Annual Cruisin for a
Cause Classic Car Show & Cook-
out fundraiser on Saturday, Sept.
15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All pro-
ceeds will support the South Jer-
sey Chapter of the Alzheimers
Association. The rain date for the
event is on Sunday, Sept. 22 from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For a $5 per person donation,
guests can enjoy antique cars and
street rods on display from the
1920s through 1960s, oldies musi-
cal entertainment, an all-you-can-
eat cookout and door prizes. A
local DJ will keep the music flow-
ing outdoors throughout the
event. The Classic Car Show is

The 32nd Annual Bike Multiple Sclero-
sis (MS) City to Shore Ride will be held on
Sept. 29 and 30. Voorhees is again proud to
be a participant in the event, which begins
at the Woodcrest Speedline Station in
Cherry Hill then winds its way through
our community.
Named by Bicycling Magazine as the
Best Cycling Getaway in N.J., the ride
promises to be the best cycling experience
on the east coast and takes riders through
scenic South Jersey to Ocean City. Ride
with 7,000 cyclists of all ages and cycling
abilities for the challenge of your choice
with several route options. Enjoy flat ter-
rain as you travel through the quaint
towns and back roads of South Jersey.
Pedal through the blueberry fields of Ham-
monton, experience the serene beauty of
the Pine Barrens and listen to the waves as
you roll into historic Ocean City. Following
an overnight stay, cyclists return to Cherry
Hill on Sunday for a festive finish line cele-
bration.

local people who
live with the dis-
ease. The symp-
toms are unpre-
dictable and vary
from person to per-
son. They can
range from abnor-

The National MS Societys mission is to
create a world free of MS. As the largest
non-profit fundraiser of MS research in
the world, the Society has invested more
than $500 million and provides more serv-
ices to those living with MS than any other
organization in the world.
The bike event is projected to raise $5
million to continue the Societys mission.
Cyclists will travel though our Township to
unite in the fight against MS. All funds
raised are used to support medical re-
search and provide services for local fami-
lies living with MS.
Bike MS depends on the support of more
than 1,200 volunteers for its success each
year. If you choose not to ride, your help as
a volunteer would be appreciated. All vol-
unteers will receive a 2012 Bike MS T-shirt.

T
he news from July wasnt great
for Atlantic City: another big
loss in casino win money from
the same month last year.
But, all is not lost, and August prom-
ised to be a bit better because we avoid-
ed a tropical storm, unlike last year.
The state reported that casino rev-
enue was down 9.5 percent from July
2011. That includes a lost weekend
(2011 had five weekends).
But comparing year-over-year data
might not be all that relevant to At-
lantic Citys future. Big wins or loss-
es on the part of high-rolling gam-
blers can make a difference. And the
citys fate really doesnt lie in the
hands of a hot weekend here and
there.
Atlantic Citys future depends on be-
coming a vacation destination for peo-
ple who not only like to gamble, but
also enjoy fine dining, entertainment,
nightlife and more.
The days of relying on busloads of
gamblers from surrounding states to
pay the bills are over. Those buses now
stop at casinos that are located much
closer to the gambers homes. Atlantic
City casinos have registered losses
ever since Pennsylvania opened its
casinos almost six years ago. Pennsyl-
vania gamblers, quite naturally, are
staying closer to home. At least those
who just want to spend a few hours in
front of a slot machine.
Atlantic Citys future is more closely
tied to new ventures, such as the Revel,
which is touting itself as something
much more than just a gambling hall.
That casino is seeing revenue growth.
Maybe not as much or as quickly as all
would like, but, nonetheless, it is grow-
ing.
Atlantic City has to reinvent itself
and thats not an impossible task. It
has to become the East Coast version
off Las Vegas something so grand, so
spectacular that people bypass their
local gambling establishment to expe-
rience something special.
Its on its way. But it wont get there
overnight.

were down. But a new marketing cam-
paign and other efforts seem to indi-
cate that Atlantic City finally realizes it
has to be something other than a col-

The Animal Welfare Associa-
tion (AWA) is now the latest con-
tentious site for political warfare.
The DemoCATS and the RePUPli-
cans are battling over the right to
claim the top spot as Comman-
der and Chief of Area Homes.
During the next 67 days leading
up to the national election, the
dogs and cats at AWA are cam-
paigning. They are part of the
Race to the Right House adoption
promotion.
Each adoption is a vote cast for
the species that will claim most
popular and will plop down in a
fancy sofa seated for four years as
Pet President.
The campaign is getting
dirty, Betsy Ransome, director of
shelter services, said. Kitty litter
is flying over numerous scan-
dals. The political themed adop-
tion event consists of weeks of
mock debates, Facebook shared
scandals and election drama.
This area is in for a whirl-
wind month as each pet party
purrs, meows and barks their
way to the top, states Adoption
Manager Nicole Dubois. We
know the numbers; nearly 80 per-
cent of households in New Jersey
have a cat or dog. And, we know
that cats currently reign
supreme. There are more cats in
homes then dogs. But, dogs are
mans best friend.

I dont know if I could do it
without them, said Gilbert. I
ran my first half marathon when
my son was 6 months old. He is 21
now.
Lacing up her running shoes,
Gilbert is an ultra-runner. She
does not let anything slow her
down. A few years ago, Gilbert
was diagnosed with myelopathy
of the spinal cord as a result of
B12 deficiency, she said.
It made me stronger, and after
that I needed to know I could still
run the 50 miles, Gilbert said.
She tested herself race after
race. Each race brought another
sense of accomplishment for her.
Running more than the tradi-
tional marathons distance is a
hobby for Gilbert, but its a hobby
that she discovered while she ran
only 5K and 10K races.
I started with 5Ks and then
10Ks and half marathons. I think
I must have run 12 half
marathons and [ran nine
marathons] and then I happened
to be watching 60 Minutes one
night and there was a story on
ultra-running. That of course
piqued my interest, Gilbert said.
That particular 60 Minutes
episode featured Dean Karnazes,
an American ultra-marathon
runner and author of Ultrama-
rathon Man: Confessions of an
All-night runner.
Gilbert was inspired by Kar-
nazes interview and immediately
started researching ultra-
marathons.
I didnt know what I was look-
ing for. But the closest one started
in Boonsboro, MD. It was the JFK
50 mile, Gilbert said.
The first 14 miles started on the
Appalachian Trail. Each runner
had 15 hours to complete the race,
but Gilbert wanted to finish the
50 miles run in 14 hours and 59
minutes. Instead, Gilbert finished
her first 50-mile ultra-marathon
in 12 hours and 42 minutes.
It was all a new experience for
me because here in South Jersey
there is no such thing as trails,
everything is flat, said Gilbert.
So I just went into the unknown
and I got hooked.
She does not stop running.
Gilbert tries to run three times
during the week after work, and,
on the weekend, she sets aside
times for her longer runs. During
the races Gilbert walks for 3 min-
utes and runs for 15 minutes.
Gilbert also keeps a log of how
many miles she runs a day along
with her time. She could probably
tell you how many training miles
she has run since 2005. Her total
training miles since her first
ultra-marathon, the JFK 50 mile
race is 4,736 miles.
She is planning to run the
Pennsylvania 100 in Fairmount
Park next year.
All I know is to put on my
shoes and run, Gilbert said.

Miriam Gilbert came in third place at the Around the Lake ultra-
marathon in Wakefield, Mass. on July 27 to 28.
Fiorentino found that many
camps would not allow children
with a disability to join due to a li-
ability risk. Thats another rea-
son why Camp Little Rock start-
ed.
Camp Little Rock is an annual,
six-week program for visually im-
paired children. The camp is a
free camp for children from ages 7
to 14.
Tina collaborated with the
YMCA in 2009. Children who
wanted to attend the camp were
offered an all inclusive, six-week
program, free of charge for all
families. The kids had an option
to choose how long they wanted to
attend the day camp or if they
wanted to attend the overnight
camp.
Fiorentino mentioned the
training staff members have to
prepare for the program. All-day
workshops were set up for the
YMCA camp counselors to help
prepare them for handling chil-
dren with disabilities and keep
them in a safe environment.
I researched it for about a
year to try and find a camp that
would be compatible with the
challenges that we faced, and the
YMCA was very receptive to
bringing the children in and then
allowing me to improve the camp
program, Fiorentino said.
She wanted to make sure that
the children were able to partici-
pate in activities for adaptability.
During the camp, the children
participate in archery, swimming,
dancing, boating and other activi-
ties where the children learn to
adapt to performing that activity.
Fiorentino said when they did
the archery activity, the children
shot at balloons so they would
know when they hit the target.
Its just little things that we
use to the adaptive program to
make it successful, Fiorentino
said.
Maria Ceferatti and her son,
Simon Bonenfant, 10, have been
going to Camp Little Rock for two
summers.
Simon has the same eye condi-
tion as Rocco.
Ceferatti heard about the camp
and foundation through friends.
The organization Ceferatti works
for ironically was featured on the
same network station as TLCR.
Both Ceferatti and Firoentino
managed to bump into each other
on the set and that is how Simon
started attending the camp.
I can see each year he is more
and more willing to stretch out
his comfort zones, so as a parent
that is like thrilling to watch, Ce-
feratti said.
Simon had many things to say
about the camp. Simon was get-
ting ready to play soccer; he took
a drink of water and was not shy
when talking about the time he
spends at the camp.
Just because you have a dis-
ability doesnt mean that you
cant do things, said Simon. If
you have a disability then you can
work through your disability and
work through your needs. I feel
like Camp Little Rock [does
that].
Bonenfant did not have a spe-
cific camp activity that he en-
joyed most, but he said he is al-
ways up for trying new activities.
On the basketball courts, a
group was playing wall ball.
Standing in line was Rocco.
Rocco is not only the CEO of
the organization; he is a CIT for
Camp Little Rock.
I think it gives a lot of these
kids an incredible experience that
they dont normally have and
dont get the opportunity to do.
For some of them this is what
