III B.Tech.(CCC) Supplimentary Examinations, December 2008 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER (Mechanical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Distinguish between conduction, convection and radiation modes of heat transfer. (b) A solar pane, 1 m x 1.25m receives solar radiation 1500 watts, Calculate surface temperature of the pane if the ambient temperature is 250 C and the convective heat transfer coecient of the air lm over the surface of pane is 12.5W/m2 -deg. [10+10] 2. A composite slab consists of 250 mm re clay brick (k=1.09 W/mK) inside, 100 mm red earth brick(0.26 W/mK) and outer layer of common brick (0.6 W/mK) of thickness 50 mm. If inside surface is at 12000 C and outside surface is at 1000 C, nd (a) heat ux, (b) the temperature of the junctions and (c) the temperature at 200 mm from the outer surface of the wall. [20]

3. Dierentiate between mechanisms of heat transfer by free and forced convection. Mention some of the areas where these mechanisms are predominant. [20] 4. What do you understand by the hydrodynamics and thermal boundary layers. Illustrate with reference to ow over a at heated plate. [20] 5. (a) A 10mm dia, ground and polished stainless steel tube ( = 0.05) is maintained at a surface temperature of 3000 C while boiling water at atmospheric pressure. Identify the regime of pool boiling and calculate heat ux and heat transfer coecient. (b) Estimate the heat ux required to maintain a brass plate at 1200 C. While boiling saturated water at 1 atm. What is the power requirement if the water is pressurized to 10 atm? At what fraction of the critical heat ux is the plate operating? [10+10] 6. (a) Dene the terms i. absorptivity ii. reectivity and iii. transmissivity. (b) Dierentiate between specular and diuse reections. (c) Derive Stefan-Boltzmanns law from Planks law. 1 of 2 [8+4+8]

(b) Water (Cp = 4200 J/kg -K ) enters a counter ow double pipe heat exchanger at 390 C at the rate of 273.6 kg/hr. It is heated by oil ( Cp = 1880 J/kg-K ) owing at the rate of 547.2 kg/hr from an inlet temperature of 1180 C nd the total heat transfer rate per m2 . Take U = 342 W/m2 -K.v. [10+10] 8.
