SANAA, Yemen -- American unrest escalated in the Middle East on Thursday as demonstrators burned U.S. flags in Yemen and protesters descended on the embassy in Cairo for a third straight day. Security was increased at American embassies and consulates around the world after a mob of Libyans attacked the U.S. Consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, killing American Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. A group sang 'Happy birthday' to a young child in both English and Spanish. Fran Feeley, 44, a librarian at Inter-American Magnet School, said he had "mixed-feelings" about the news. While Feeley doesn't want the strike to carry on, he said certain issues need to be addressed. "I don't accept the idea that charter schools and vouchers and testing kids eight weeks a year is going to solve the problems facing the public schools," he said. At the picket line outside CPS headquarters in the Loop, teachers said they hoped their actions will be a good lesson not just for their students, but for other unions across the country. Other schools and strikers around the country can realize we should no longer be bullied, said Donielle Lawson, known as the jail teacher because she teaches special education at York Alternative High School located at Cook County Jail. Lawson said she sent a text message to Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis late Wednesday night after hearing that the two sides had made

progress and students could be back into the classroom soon. "Get to bed," Lawson said she texted Lewis around 12:15 a.m. "Just got home," Lewis texted back. Like other teachers on the picket line into front of CPS headquarters this morning, Lawson said she is anxious to get back to the classroom and her students. She plans on having candid conversations with them about the strike. "Theyre all too familiar with bullying and societal injustices, so it would be a very easy conversation with them, Lawson said. Theyre all fighting cases right now. Some are looking at 45 (years in prison) to life. Christopher Barker said he too is ready to be back in the classroom. I feel like everything has slid a week back, he said. Barker, who teaches math and humanities at George Manierre Elementary School, said he needs to finish evaluating his new students, call parents and build his student library. One of the first things on the agenda, however, will be talking to his students about what the strike meant. Is there anywhere that you go in life when you do have to speak up for yourself when theres a perceived injustice?

Barker said he will have to play some catch up and will have to do a quick review of school procedures. He hopes to be back in school on Friday or Monday. David Temkin, a CPS social worker, said he has been affected by the strike as a teacher and a parent. He has two daughters in CPS, one in first grade, the other in second grade. But in what battle dont we have casualties? Temkin said. Although students suffer during a strike, Temkin said the strike makes it possible for teachers to be heard. "Weve been struggling to have a voice at the table, he said. The board doesnt listen. Maybe theyre start to listen now. School and union officials met late into the night Wednesday mainly discussing two key issues that have separated them: evaluations and the rehiring of laid-off teachers. The progress was reported after Chicago Public Schools officials presented a revised contract proposal to the union on Tuesday and it was reviewed and discussed during talks Wednesday. U.S. embassies attacked in Yemen, Egypt after Libya envoy killed

(Reuters: Top News)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:14:18 PM

By Mohammed Ghobari and Edmund Blair SANAA/CAIRO| Thu Sep 13, 2012 2:14pm EDT (Reuters) - Demonstrators attacked the U.S. embassies in Yemen and Egypt on Thursday in protest at a film they consider blasphemous to Islam, and American warships headed to Libya after the U.S. ambassador there died in related violence earlier this week. Hundreds of Yemenis broke through the main gate of the heavily fortified compound in the capital Sanaa, shouting "We sacrifice ourselves for you, Messenger of God". They smashed windows of security offices outside the embassy and burned cars. "We can see a fire inside the compound and security forces are firing in the air. The demonstrators are fleeing and then charging back," one witness told Reuters. A security source said at least 15 people were wounded, some by gunfire, before the Yemeni government ringed the area with troops. An embassy spokesman said its personnel were safe. In Egypt, protesters hurled stones at a police cordon around the U.S.

embassy in central Cairo after climbing into the embassy compound and tearing down the American flag. The state news agency said 13 people were hurt in violence which erupted late on Wednesday, following initial protests on Tuesday. During a similar protest on Tuesday at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libyan Islamists staged military-style assaults on the mission and a safe house refuge. It was the 11th anniversary of al Qaeda's attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. The U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died in the assaults, carried out with guns, mortars and grenades. Eight Libyans were injured. President Barack Obama vowed to "bring to justice" those responsible for the attack, which U.S. officials said may have been planned in advance. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington had nothing to do with the video, which she called "disgusting and reprehensible". The U.S. military moved two destroyers towards the Libyan coast, in what an official said was a move to give the administration flexibility for any future action against Libyan targets. The U.S. military also dispatched a Marine Corps anti-terrorist team

to boost security in Libya, whose leader Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in a U.S.-backed uprising last year. Obama said security was being increased at U.S. diplomatic stations around the globe. Nigeria put police on high alert and stepped up security around all foreign missions, fearing an Islamist backlash, possibly after weekly prayers on Friday. On Thursday, the U.S. consulate in Berlin was partially evacuated after an employee fell ill on opening a suspicious envelope. Bangladeshi Islamists tried to march on the U.S. embassy in Dhaka and Iranian students protested in Tehran. Earlier in the week, there were protests outside U.S. missions in Tunisia, Sudan and Morocco. FILM The attackers were part of a mob blaming America for a film they said insulted the Prophet Mohammad. Clips of the "Innocence of Muslims," had been circulating on the Internet for weeks before the protests erupted. They show an amateurish production portraying Mohammad as a womanizer, a homosexual and a child abuser. For many Muslims, any depiction of the Prophet is blasphemous and caricatures or other characterizations have in the past

provoked protests. Clinton said Washington rejected the film's message absolutely. "It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose: to denigrate a great religion and provoke rage," she said. An actress in the California production said the video as it appeared bore no resemblance to the original filming. She had not been aware it was about the Prophet Mohammad. Among the assailants in Benghazi, Libyans identified units of a heavily armed local Islamist group, Ansar al-Sharia, which sympathizes with al Qaeda and derides Libya's U.S.-backed bid for democracy. Former Libya militant commander Noman Benotman, now president of Britain's Quilliam think-tank, said Western officials were investigating a possible link with a paramilitary training camp about 100 miles south of the eastern Libyan town of Derna, near the Egyptian border. U.S. officials said there were suggestions members of al Qaeda's north-Africa based affiliate may have been involved. Yemen, a key U.S. ally, is home to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), viewed by Washington as the most dangerous branch of the militant

network established by Osama bin Laden. The attacks could alter U.S. attitudes towards the revolutions that toppled secularist authoritarian leaders in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia and brought Islamists to power. The violence also could have an impact on the closely contested U.S. presidential race ahead of the November 6 election. Republican Mitt Romney, Obama's challenger, criticized the government's response to the crisis, saying it was disgraceful to be seen to be apologizing for American values of free speech. Obama's campaign accused Romney of trying to score political points at a time of national tragedy. The attack raised questions about the future U.S. diplomatic presence in Libya, relations between Washington and Tripoli, and the unstable security situation after Gaddafi's overthrow. Some see such aggressive religiosity as a tactic by hardline Islamist groups keen to mark out their differences from more mainstream Muslim leaders who have risen to positions of power. Fed bets big in new push to rescue economy

(Reuters: Top News)

The Federal Reserve building is seen in Washington June 19, 2012. Credit: Reuters/Yuri Gripas By Pedro da Costa and Alister Bull WASHINGTON| Thu Sep 13, 2012 2:02pm EDT (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve launched another aggressive stimulus program on Thursday, saying it will buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed debt per month until the outlook for jobs improves substantially as long as inflation remains contained. In an unprecedented step, the Fed's policymaking panel escalated its effort to drive U.S. unemployment lower by tying its unconventional bond buying directly to economic conditions, a move that immediately sparked controversy among its critics. "If the outlook for the labor market does not improve substantially, the committee will continue its purchase of agency mortgage-backed securities, undertake additional asset purchases, and employ its other policy tools as appropriate until such improvement is achieved in a context of price stability," the Fed said in a statement. In an additional move that [unable to retrieve full-text content]

reflects just how concerned Fed officials are about the economy, officials said they were not likely to raise interest rates from current rock-bottom lows until at least mid-2015. Previously, it had set such guidance at late 2014. "To support continued progress toward maximum employment and price stability, the committee expects that a highly accommodative stance of monetary policy will remain appropriate for a considerable time after the economic recovery strengthens," the central bank said. U.S. stocks added to gains on the Fed's move, the dollar fell broadly, oil prices rose and gold hit a six-month high. However, bond prices dropped as some investors worried the aggressive easing of monetary policy might fuel inflation. "They are definitely stepping up," said William Larkin, a portfolio manager at Cabot Money Management in Salem, Massachusetts. "It creates an inflation outlook concern because if you are doing it for this extreme for this length of time, my biggest question is what is going to happen to inflation in two years?" PUSHING ON A STRING? The decision comes in the face of widespread questions about the likely effectiveness of a further [unable to retrieve full-text content]

foray into unorthodox monetary policy, including from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Senator John Cornyn, head of the Senate Republican Campaign Committee, said the Fed appeared to be "trying to juice the economy" ahead of the November 6 presidential election to help Obama. "It looks to be political," he said. Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega said he would keep a close eye on the impact of the Fed's monetary easing on Brazil's real currency. Mantega had accused the Fed's earlier bond buying of unfairly weakening the U.S. dollar. In its statement, the Fed said the fresh MBS purchases, which it will start on Friday, would come on top of its so-called Operation Twist program, in which it is selling short-term bonds to buy longer-term Treasury debt. "These actions, which together will increase the committee's holdings of longer-term securities by about $85 billion each month through the end of the year, should put downward pressure on longer-term interest rates, support mortgage markets, and to help make broader financial conditions more accommodative," it said. The latest purchases build on the $2.3 trillion in U.S. government [unable to retrieve full-text content]

and housing-related debt the Fed has already bought. In the Fed's first two rounds of so -called quantitative easing, dubbed QE1 and QE2, the central bank bought bonds closer to a pace around $100 billion per month. "SWALLOWING THE KEY" By buying mortgage-linked debt, the Fed hopes to press mortgage costs lower and force investors into other assets, lowering their yields as well. Those lower borrowing costs should spur greater lending activity and foster faster economic growth, officials believe. U.S. economic growth cooled in the second quarter, coming in at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate, and forecasters do not believe it is doing much better now. The economy created just 96,000 jobs last month, less than needed to keep up with population growth. While the unemployment rate edged down to 8.1 percent, it was only because so many Americans gave up on the search for work. A summary of policy-makers' individual projections released after the statement showed that 12 of the 19 members of the committee think that the first upward move in rates should occur in 2015, twice as many as had in June. [unable to retrieve full-text content]

One policymaker thought rates should stay near zero until 2016 while, mirroring the wide division of views currently on the committee, six officials believed policy should start to tighten sometime between now and the end of 2014. The projections do not identify individual policymakers. In a reflection of optimism over their new policy path, officials lowered their forecast for the unemployment rate at the end of 2014 to a 6.7 percent to 7.3 percent range, down from a June range of 7.0 percent to 7.7 percent. Still, even in 2015, they believe the jobless rate will still be above where they eventually want it to settle. Stephen Stanley, an economist Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut, said that by tying its purchases to progress reducing U.S. unemployment, the Fed had "basically locked on the handcuffs and swallowed the key." continue through the end of the year a program it announced in June to exchange short-term securities for longer-term securities, taking the total volume of purchases to roughly $85 billion a month. The new purchases will mark the first time in more than two years that the Fed has expanded its holdings of mortgage bonds. That decision reflects the Feds view that the housing market still needs help, and that lower rates on mortgage loans could provide significant benefits for the broader economy. The committee said in its statement that the new actions should put downward pressure on longer-term interest rates, support mortgage markets, and help to make broader financial conditions more accommodative. The Fed had given unusually clear indications in recent weeks that it was ready to act. An account of its last meeting, published in mid-August, suggested action was imminent unless the economy showed substantial and sustainable improvement. A few weeks later, Mr. Bernanke spoke of his grave concern about the high rate of unemployment and said that in his judgment, the likely benefits of additional action outweighed the potential costs. A number of longtime observers of the central

bank said they could not recall a Fed chairman using stronger language. Since then, the economy has shown little evidence of substantial improvement. The government estimated last week that employers added only 96,000 jobs in August, and other economic indicators have been similarly lackluster. The political climate has complicated the Feds efforts. Republicans including Mitt Romney, the partys presidential nominee, have argued against new action. Mr. Romney has promised to replace Mr. Bernanke, and Republicans are seeking to impose new limits on the Feds management of monetary policy. Fed officials insist that they do not consider politics in making their decisions, and history shows that the central bank often has acted during presidential campaigns it has announced policy changes in September or October during 10 of the last 15 presidential election years, according to research by Credit Suisse. Moreover, the political situation also has provided a motivation for the Fed to act. The nations fiscal policy including the tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take effect next year increasingly looms as the largest threat to growth, many experts say. Fed officials have said that it

could tip the economy back into recession, and Mr. Bernanke has repeatedly urged Congress to dismantle this fiscal cliff. Some Fed officials have argued that the central bank should seek to strengthen the economy as much as possible in the meantime to cushion the potential shock. The Fed has struggled to define its role over the last three years. Its big and unprecedented actions helped to arrest the 2008 financial crisis, economists maintain. But as the economy has settled between crisis and prosperity, Fed officials have become divided over their ability and responsibility to do more. Mr. Bernanke has presided over a gradual intensification of the central banks stimulus campaign, but the central bank has repeatedly underestimated the depth of the nations economic problems, and the unemployment rate has remained stubbornly high. The Fed has said its current policies would not reduce unemployment to normal levels for years to come. There is broad disagreement among economists about the effects of the Feds expansion of its balance sheet. The Feds own research shows it may have raised economic output by 3 percent and created more than 2 million jobs. Most independent analyses have reached more modest conclusions, and some experts argue that there

is little evidence of any meaningful economic impact. Experts also disagree about the likely impact of additional purchases. Mr. Bernanke said last month in Jackson Hole, Wyo., that he was confident such a program would stimulate the economy. Significantly, he also said that he had concluded the likely benefits of such a program would outweigh the potential costs. Many outside economists share Mr. Bernankes conclusion that the Fed retains considerable power to bolster the economy. However, some economists argue that the Fed has exhausted its power or that the costs now outweigh the benefits. Nathaniel Popper contributed reporting from New York. John H. Cushman Jr. contributed from Washington. embassies in Cairo, saying the Egyptian people reject such "unlawful acts." In Yemen, demonstrators gathered in the streets around the embassy compound chanting: "We will not leave until the Americans leave" as they burned tires in front of soldiers and water cannon trucks. Sustained gunfire rang out as troops attempted to disperse the crowds, with AK-47s and .50caliber machine guns being fired over the heads of the chanting crowds. Medics on the scene said one man sustained a head wound from a falling bullet. Security had been stepped up on the approach roads to the embassy building in anticipation of protests following similar attacks in Libya and Egypt. Soldiers stood back allowing protesters through the concrete roadblocks toward the U.S. Embassy building and some marched alongside the demonstrators, before shots were fired over their heads by armored vehicles and other foot soldiers. The streets surrounding the U.S. Embassy in the northeast of the capital remained tense for several hours after the initial storming of the compound.

Embassy staff have been living in Sanaa's Sheraton hotel, just a few hundred meters from the embassy building, since violence broke out during political unrest in the city last year. It was unclear how many staff were in the embassy when the compound was stormed. Troops responsible for security around the U.S. Embassy are from Yemen's Central Security Forces, commanded by Brigadier General Yahya Saleh, nephew of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh finally relinquished power last February after a year-long uprising against him. As part of recent structural changes within the military, under the terms of a U.S.-backed political transition deal, Yemen's new president, Abdu Rabu Mansor al-Hadi, has moved several members of the Saleh family from key army and air force positions. STORY: Questions surround film at center of protests STORY: After attacks in Middle East, USA asks: Why? In Iraq on Thursday, hundreds of Shiite followers of the antiAmerican cleric Muqtada al-Sadr demanded the closure of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad because of

the film. Protesters burned American flags and carried banners reading, "We reject the attack on the prophet Mohammed." "No, no, to Israel! No, no to America!" thousands shouted in the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City in northeast Baghdad. "Yes, yes for Messenger of God." Afghanistan's government, meanwhile, sought to avert any protests as past anger over perceived insults to Islam has triggered violence in the country. President Hamid Karzai canceled an official visit to Norway and spoke by phone with President Obama to convey his condolences for the deaths of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other diplomats, a statement said. He also discussed the "film and the insulting of holy Islamic values," but the statement provided no other details. Analysts say they don't believe the tragedy in Libya will impact its relationship with the current U.S. administration. "It's a very good and strong relationship," said Paul Salem, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. "In general, the view of the U.S. after the

revolution was a fairly positive image among most Libyans." But the region retains its challenges. "The Middle East is now going to be the wild Middle East in some ways and this kind of shoot-'emup action is, I am afraid, going to be part of the political landscape in the Middle East for some time to come," said Joshua Landis, director for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oklahoma. during the first year could not result in dismissal; later evaluations could be appealed; and health insurance rates would hold steady if the union agreed to take part in a wellness program. The new proposal also removes the district's ability to rescind raises because of an economic crisis. The board stripped teachers of a 4 percent raise last year, sparking union distrust of the mayor. The issues of recall and how to evaluate teachers have been cited as crucial in recent days, while there has been little if any debate over a proposed salary boost that would average 16 percent over four years. To pay for those raises, which could cost the cash-starved district $320 million over four years, other expenses would have to be cut. The money-saving tactics could include closing schools and shifting public school students to charters that mostly hire lowerpaid, nonunion workers and get additional funding from

philanthropic sources. Mayor Rahm Emanuel did not specify how the district would pay for the raises, saying only that "they've worked through those issues" and "teachers are the most important resource." He also said there is no specific target for the number of new charter schools that will be added to the district. "I don't have a fixed number," he said, noting that 19,000 students who applied for charters were turned away for lack of space. In a proposal to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation made earlier this year, the district proposed opening 60 charter schools over five years. Most parents dropping off their children at Walt Disney Magnet School on Thursday morning were smiling, saying they're hopeful the teacher's strike will come to an end this week. "I think it's great," said Rebecca Eden-Eichenlaub, as she stood outside the school around 8:45 am with her 7-year-old triples. "I

think if it's a fair compromise on both sides, the sooner we can get the kids in, the better." All this week, Eden-Eichenlaub said she's been dropping her children off at the Chicago Park District, which has day programs for kids that last until at least 3:30 p.m. There, the triplets played games and made arts and crafts in what they jokingly called "strike camp." But she decided to bring them to Walt Disney School, 4140 North Marine Drive, also a Children First site, when she learned it extended its hours to 2:30 p.m. "Who's going to take their kids to some place for three hours?" she said. "That doesn't make sense." As a dozen students at Walt Disney School played on fields behind her, Gabriela Montoya, 37, said her two children, ages 7 and 8, are anxious to return to their classrooms at Greeley Elementary in the Lakeview neighborhood. Montoya said she's been following the news to keep track of the negotiations. When she

learned the two sides hinted children could be back in their school desks as early as Friday, she said she was relieved. She said she's been able to care for the children on certain days, but dropped them off at Walt Disney School today and on Tuesday because she had plans to volunteer at a food pantry. "The kids miss school so much," she said. "They want to see their friends and learn new things." bdoyle@tribune.com hdardick@tribune.com kmack@tribune.com Twitter @ReporterHal This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/contentonly/faq.php#publishers. A Libyan doctor at a Benghazi hospital pronounced him dead of smoke inhalation and U.S. information technology specialist Sean Smith also died. Two other Americans were killed when a squad of U.S. troops sent by helicopter from Tripoli to rescue diplomats from the safe house came under mortar attack. Libyan leader Mohammed Magarief and Yemeni President Mansour Hadi both apologized to the United States over the attacks and Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Mursi condemned them on television while also rejecting any "insult to the Prophet". Many Muslim states focused their condemnation on the film and will be concerned about preventing a repeat of the fallout seen after publication in a Danish newspaper of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. This touched off riots in the Middle East, Africa and Asia in 2006 in which at least 50 people died. Afghan President Hamid Karzai called the making of the movie a "devilish act" but said he was certain those involved in its production were a very small minority. The U.S. embassy in Kabul appealed to Afghan leaders for help in "maintaining calm" and

Afghanistan ordered the YouTube site shut down so Afghans would not be able to see the film. YouTube, owned by Google Inc, said it would not remove the clip but blocked access in Egypt and Libya. Russian President Vladimir Putin, a sharp critic of last year's Western military intervention in Libya and of Western backing for Syria's rebels, condemned the violence and called on new Arab governments to take responsibility for containing it. So, if New Yorkers drink too much soda and portions are too big, why not try to limit the portions? In a crowded public hearing in Queens in July, opponents gave their often incoherent answers (my colleague will post video footage shortly). Among their most lucid criticisms, the ban infringed on individual liberty and would be ineffective anywayit would not apply to grocery stores, for example. I have two main problems with the proposal. First, the mayor is trying to force the ban by edict. Other measures for public health, such as the smoking ban, were approved by the independent city council. The board of health is appointed by the mayor. This first complaint compounds the second: the mayor, by overreaching here, may undermine support for his better initiatives to fight obesity. That would be a shame.

Islamist Violence Highlights Potential for Radicalization in India

(World Politics Review: Articles)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 6:25:00 AM

The ongoing Shiite-Sunni cold war that is manifesting itself throughout the Middle East may be beginning to spill over into India. Home to a large Muslim minority consisting of both major sects of Islam, India has recently found itself forced to deal with increasing fallout from the intra-

Islamic struggle. At one of the end of the spectrum was the attack against an Israeli diplomat possibly orchestrated by Iranian proxies; at the other were the recent violent protests by a Saudifunded seminary in the heart of Mumbai. Given Indias dependence on energy exports from the wider Islamic world and the nations history of HinduMuslim violence, the coming

decade will be a test of both Indias diplomacy and its ability to promote intercommunity dialogue. Historically, Islamist violence in India was generally limited to the Kashmir valley, where Muslim separatists forced out half a million Kashmiri Hindus from the area in the late-1980s. However, heightened sectarian tensions in the 1990s made it easier for

Middle Eastern interests to radicalize segments of the Indian Muslim population, especially among those that had ties to criminal networks operating out of places like Dubai. This process may have accelerated in the past decade, especially in the context of the global war on terror, which many Muslims in India, as elsewhere, perceived as being directed at them. ...

Former General Electric CEO: American leadership in Middle East reminiscent of Carter in 1979
John Hayward ( Todays Top News)

Politics Jack Welch, once the CEO of General Electric, now runs his own management institute. From his perch on Twitter, he looked down upon the Obama administrations handling of the current Mideast crisis and felt an unwelcome pang of nostalgia on Thursday morning: American leadership today in the Middle East is reminiscent of Carter in 1979 Welch was also critical of how journalists have been covering the

situation: Unbelievable seeing media caught ganging up on Romney when issue was Middle East policy and tragic death of Ambassador. Welch isnt the only one noting Obamas rapidly accelerating transformation into Jimmy Carter. Obama even echoed a Carter criticism of Ronald Reagan when he said, in a CBS interview taped Wednesday night, that Mitt Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later. As Byron York at the Washington Examiner recalls, Carter said Regans Republican Party had leaders inclined to

shoot from the hip, and turned this into a recurring criticism of Reagan in his political ads. Thats apparently how indifferent, indecisive, confused non-

leadership protects itself from perspicacious criticism. Everyone who doesnt need a day or two to get his message straight, figure out which parts of the

Constitution are worth defending, and delete a boatload of regrettable State Department communications from social media is shooting without aiming first. World Citizen: Peru's Humala Confounds Critics, Disappoints Supporters

(World Politics Review: Articles)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 6:27:00 AM

When Peruvian voters headed to the polls last year, the presidential election looked like a proxy contest for two radical views of the South American country's

future. Ollanta Humala, who emerged victorious, had left advocates of free-market economic policies feeling nervous due to his past support for the policies of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Humala had previously run for president as an

anti-business socialist in 2006, and before that, he had attempted a military coup in 2000. Many voters worried he would take the country in a radical, populist, antimarket direction. More than a year later, Humalas presidency could not have turned

out more differently from what his foes feared and his supporters expected. But the president is still searching for his political identity. ... This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service if this is your content and you're reading it

True to many fanboy predictions, the sexy new phone is thinner than its predecessors, with a glassand-aluminum design and a bigger screen. A new processor that's both faster and, by combining voice and data onto one chip, takes up less space. than its share of those buyers. Blogger Robert Scoble, a photography expert, disagreed with Enderle's assessment that the new iPhone's camera was inferior to those already sold by competitors. "Is it better than the camera in the Samsung S3?" he asked. "I think so, but we have to have them side by side and test them." Several startup CEOs predicted the new phone will boost the ecosystem of smartphone app developers that's exploded since the iPhone's introduction. "Its probably early to say whether entirely new verticals will happen," said Dave Morin, head of social network Path. "But the one thing I can say is, more room on the screen is better. The ability to fit an entire portrait photo in the feed is something we couldn't do before." Too, he said, a larger screen will give developers more chances to land their apps on an iPhone phone user's home screen. "That's a huge deal," he said. Dave Lieb, CEO of a Mountain View startup called Bump -which lets users share contact information, photos and other content by knocking their smartphones together -- was excited by the promise of a faster, IPHONE page 15

better performing camera. " "You want to take a photo of an exciting moment in your life, and there's a lag," said Lieb, whose company also makes an app called Flock that shares a user's photos automatically with their Facebook friends who are nearby. With the new iPhone, he said, "They're gonna shave off about half a second between the time you start to take a picture and when it takes." Also as expected, Apple execs showed off some forthcoming upgrades to the company's popular music players and iTunes music service. After a brief metamorphosis into a square, the Nano returns to its roots as a rectangular device, enabling a larger screen. The device will include Wi-Fi, so users can stream music to external speakers and headphones, plus 30 hours of battery life. As for the Touch -- basically, an iPhone minus the phone -- new features include Siri; an improved camera with flash; and a dual core processing chip that Apple marketing executive Greg

Joswiak said will be twice as fast as the last version. To highlight just how deeply music is woven into the company culture and products, Cook introduced rock band Foo Fighters to perform a trio of songs. Both devices will now come in a rainbow of new colors, and a portion of the sales of red devices will be donated to combat AIDS in Africa. Analyst Bajarin said the new versions "put life back into the iPod line." A 16 gigabyte Nano will sell for $149, while a Touch of that size will go for $199. The price ramps up as you add memory, up to $399 for 64 gigabytes. Despite the misgivings of critics like Enderle, many expect runaway demand for the new phone. After all, the iPhone 4S generated blockbuster sales and record pre-orders despite lukewarm reviews. In the most recent quarter for which it reported earnings, in late July, Apple said it had sold about 35 million units of the 4S. Such numbers are a stark contrast

to the 1 million units Apple sold of its first iPhone in the first 10 weeks after it its June 2007 release. It's a bit hard to believe that was only five years ago, considering how fundamentally the device has reshaped the world of computing. Apple has unveiled a new iPhone once a year, selling a reported 244 million as of June -- 40 percent of those during this fiscal year alone. Android, which Google( GOOG) released as an open-source platform 10 months after Jobs announced the iPhone, operates some 500 million devices worldwide, according to the Mountain View titan's own estimates. Entrenched players such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard( HPQ) have been reeling ever since, as first consumers, then corporate clients began ditching their desktop and laptop computers for the increased mobility and convenience of smartphones and tablets. Considering that Jobs helped create the PC industry with Apple's 1976 founding, it's easy to imagine him smiling somewhere,

surveying all that disruption in such a short span of time. Staff writer Troy Wolverton contributed to this report. Contact Peter Delevett at 408-271-3638. Follow him at Twitter.com/ mercwiretap. Only Critical Race Theory Can Defeat China

Daniel Greenfield (FrontPage Magazine)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:13:42 PM

During his Democratic National Convention speech, Obama boasted that Together we can out -educate and out-compete any nation on Earth. But what kind of education exactly is going to make American students competitive globally? Even though Obama claimed that the gateway to opportunity for him had been education, he probably did not mean that like him, American students will learn to compete with China when theyve been programmed with enough critical race theory and can accuse everyone they meet of being guilty of white privilege. A typical example of the breed is David J Leonard, an Associate Prof in Washington State Universitys Department of Critical Culture, Gender, & Race Studies. At the Huffington Post, where bottom feeders come to look for newer depths, Leonard has been posting his bizarre screeds filled with hatred for white people, despite being of the ivory persuasion himself. His obsession with the evils of white people and their incredible powers of privilege have a lot to do with figuring out how to stay

employed as an Associate Professor of the White Men are Evil Department at Washington State. One of the common responses to discussions about racism and other forms of injustice is the demand for solutions. The commonplace entry into public and private discussions about racism, the efforts to take over comment sections, to silence those who work to highlight inequality with responses like whats the solution does not engender solutions but rather works to derail the conversation In my many years of teaching and writing, the majority of those who felt entitled to have answers NOW and remedies yesterday

were white men. The shut up stop complaininggive me solutions reframe is the embodiment of privilege. You see, dont you, that calling for solutions to problems just proves what a white racist you are. If you were really concerned with solving racism, you would abandon trying to solve it and get a job teaching Critical Race Theory so that our children will be able to out-compete China in the field of crying privilege while the Chinese laugh their asses off at us. Still, David J Leonard, of the White Men Against White Men Society, does have some modest solutions. Like Universal Health Care to end our Jim Crow Health

Care and Reparations. And of course the abolition of prisons. Sure abolishing prisons and not fighting crime in the black community will completely destroy most black neighborhoods, but thats just the rational response of white privilege here. To truly be on an elevated level above white privilege and on the stepladder of academic critical race theory privilege is to understand that white people should have no say in whether black communities will be run by criminals and drug dealers. Neither should black people. That privilege belongs to David J Leonard and the Critical Race Theorist Professionals. But perhaps instead of abolishing prisons, we might want to consider abolishing critical race theorists and the other parasitic beta males who spend all day squealing about privilege on the taxpayers dime. 4th Arab Spring Country Now Attacking US Embassies

After Libya, Egypt and Yemen, there is now a 4th Arab Spring country where US embassies and consulates are under siege. The winner is Tunisia, where the overthrow of an American ally led to the rise of the extremist AlNahda Party which claims to be the Sixth Caliphate and vows to wage a holy war against Jerusalem. About 50 protesters burned American flags outside the U.S. Embassy in Tunisias capital as part of widespread anger across the Muslim world about a film ridiculing Islams Prophet Muhammad. A small number of women wearing the Islamic niqab, or full-face veil, were among the crowd Wednesday. Anti-American rioting spread yesterday to Tunisia, where police

used tear gas to stop hundreds of protesters from storming the United States Embassy in protest over a film mocking the prophet Mohammed. The throngs of demonstrators, who carried the white and black banners of militant Salifist Muslims, had been protesting

peacefully in Tunis for hours when about 300 started to break through the gates. If Salafists are known for anything, besides trying to bring back crucifixion, its peacefully protesting things and by peaceful protests, the media means shouting homicidal death threats

before unexpectedly trying to act on them. But clearly we are witnessing the wages of Obamas brilliant global outreach to Muslims paying full dividends. With the Arab Spring, he helped topple most of Americas allies and now Muslims love us more than ever. Just ask them. Obama, we are all Osama! some of the demonstrators chanted, referring to American President Barack Obama and AlQaeda chief Osama bin Laden who was killed by US commandos in May 2011. Lawmakers frustrated by Huawei, ZTE during hearings

Jay Greene (CNET News)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:23:54 PM

Huawei senior vice president Charles Ding testifies before the House Intelligence Committee. The House Intelligence Committee brought executives from two Chinese telecommunications gear makers to Capitol Hill today to press them on potential threats they pose to national security, but came away with little satisfaction. "I can say that I am a little disappointed today," committee chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said at the end of the hearing investigating Huawei and ZTE. (CNET viewed the hearing via Webcast.) "I was hoping for a little more transparency.... Other inconsistencies worry me greatly." Rogers and his fellow committee members pressed executives from the two Chinese companies repeatedly, raising allegations that the companies either take orders from the Chinese government or are at least influenced by it. Their fear is that the Chinese government will be able to use the companies' networking gear to snoop on American companies and individuals. "How will you deal with your Chinese government if they order you to give information about your customers in the United

States?" C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, (D-Md.), the ranking Democrat on the committee, asked Huawei senior vice president Charles Ding. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) questioning executives of Huawei and ZTE during a House Intelligence Committee hearing.

The Huawei executive told the committee that the company would reject the request. "We have never, nor will we ever, harm the networks of our customers," Ding said through an interpreter. "This would be corporate suicide." "Even if it meant you would go to

jail?" Ruppersberger pressed. "Why would the company put us in jail?" Ding replied. The three-hour hearing was filed with similar exchanges, questions by leery lawmakers and responses that never quite met with their satisfaction. The committee, which has visited

China to meet with executives from both companies there, is set to release a report in two to three weeks that will likely include suggestions for policy makers and the private sector for next steps. CNET visited Huawei's Chinese LAWMAKERS page 22

Committee members focused most of their attention on Huawei, which is a much bigger player in networking technology than ZTE. But ZTE senior vice president Zhu Jinyun received plenty of skeptical questioning as well. Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.) pressed Zhu about allegations that the company destroyed documents and hid evidence regarding sales of equipment to Iran. "We are actively cooperating with the U.S. government investigation to get to the bottom on this," Zhu said through an interpreter. ZTE senior vice president Zhu Jinyun testifying before the House Intelligence Committee. "You are not answering my question," Myrick shot back. "We would never do something like that," Zhu said. In another exchange, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) questioned Ding about Article 11 of the Chinese constitution, which the lawmaker said would require Huawei to grant access to its networks to the Chinese government for "state security" purposes. Ding said he was unaware of the law. "But if Huawei was put into that situation, we would say no," Ding said.

Schiff then turned to Zhu and asked the executive if he could cite any example of a company that declined such a request from the Chinese government that was upheld by courts in that country. Zhu said he knew of no such cases, but added that ZTE too would decline a request from the Chinese government for access to its networks. Schiff was unconvinced. "I see no opportunity for you to fight that in the Chinese system," Schiff said. Prior to the hearing, Huawei published a paper on its Web site decrying the investigation into the company. That report began with a quote from legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow in his investigation of the red-baiting congressmen Joseph McCarthy, who noted that "accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law." Work4 Labs Raises $10M Series A Led By Matrix To Get You Recruited Through Your Facebook Profile

Everyone needs a job, but submitting resumes is a pain and theyre not discoverable, so they dont help you get recruited. Thats why Work4 Labs has just raised $10 million to let you apply or get recruited for jobs with your Facebook profile. Along with the Series A, led by Matrix and joined by DSTs Yuri Milner and others, Work4 Labs is making its Work For Us recruitment tools free for small businesses, including an app that scans the profiles of a companys Facebook friends and suggests who to refer for what job opening. Now Work4 Labs will try to frame LinkedIn as a tool for elite headhunters and itself as the recruiting tool for the rest of the world. Its been an epic rise for Work4 Labs, growing from 10 employees and 6,000 customers to 70 employees and 17,000 customers since April 2011. Those include a lot of small businesses but also massive brands, such as SAP, General Motors, Anheuser-Busch,

and UPS. In the meantime it released possibly the smartest recruiting technologies Ive seen. The Work4 Us careers site app for Facebook Pages asks for data permissions, then scans a viewers Facebook profile for education, work history, and other pertinent data. That lets it sort the open jobs at a company to highlight those that are the best matches for the viewers qualifications. Work4 Labs clients can notifiy employees which of their friends are good fits for available jobs and suggest they refer them. Compare these to browsing an unsorted list of available positions or racking your brain for whom to refer, and you can see why Work4 Labs is doing something smart. Some of the $10 million Series A will go to investing in these algorithms that match Facebook profile data to jobs. The cash from Matrix Partners, Milner, former Monster.com president Steve Pogorzelski, and Hearsay Social co-founder and CEO Clara Shih will also fund growth of its U.S. and Europe teams plus expansion into Asia. Finally, Work4 Labs plans to make some big senior

hires in technology and marketing. Matrix general partner Dana Stalder will also join the startups board. To be real, Work4 Labs products may not be as applicable for recruiting highly specialized employees. Businesses will still need to see a full resume or filledout LinkedIn profile to tell if someones qualified for a role. But most companies spend a lot of time finding and hiring for less specialized positions where the limited work and education info in someones Facebook profile is enough to indicate a company should reach out, highlight a certain job on their careers app, or ask an employee connected to them to make a referral. Those are the same people who might not visit a companys career website, but could stop by their Facebook Page or have a friend who already works for the brand. Work4 Labs technology excels at pulling these people into the application process, and with $10 million extra dollars, you can expect it to keep getting better.

eBay announces logo switch, roll out begins next month

Eric Abent (SlashGear)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:27:24 PM

Weve nearly arrived at the end of an era, ladies and gentlemen. The iconic eBay logo that weve seen all over the place for the past 17 years (yes, it really has been 17 years since eBay launched) is about to go the way of the dinosaurs, to be replaced by a more professional logo. Soon, the bouncy eBay logo will be replaced with a cleaner-looking one, a switch which apparently signals a larger shift in the way we use eBay. Take a look at the new logo below. As you can see, the new logo keeps the same colors were used to seeing (though they seem a little toned down in this new iteration), but switches out the bouncy appearance of the text for something thats a little more straightforward. Weve included the original logo below so you can compare the two side-by-side. At the moment, the old logo still graces eBays page. It wont be swapped out for the new one until

sometime in October, so the old logo we all know and love will hang around for a while yet. In a statement posted to the site, eBay president Devin Wenig discussed the decision to change the companys famous logo, saying that it was a switch that eBay took seriously: The eBay logo is known the world over, so changing it was not a decision made lightly. The time

felt right. Were incredibly proud of how eBay started and quickly grew into the worlds largest online marketplace. Auction-style listings, used goods, vintage items and quirky, one-of-a-kind finds are still a big part of what makes buying and selling on eBay special. We hope thats always true. But weve evolved a lot in the past few years, and eBay is much more than auction-style

listings today. Wenig went on to point out that these days, most of the listings on eBay arent straight up auctions, but rather come with a fixed Buy It Now price. Indeed, this logo swap seems intended to reflect the recent shift in the way eBay users are buying and selling items, so with that being said, it does seem appropriate that eBay is getting a new logo. Still, itll be sad to see

the old one go, if only because its what weve known for the past 17 years. What do you think of eBays new logo is it a winner or a loser? Libya's Downward Spiral - By Christopher S. Chivvis

CHRISTOPHER S. CHIVVIS (Foreign Policy)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:27:04 PM

The country has been going to hell in a handbasket for months now. We just weren't paying attention. BY CHRISTOPHER S. CHIVVIS| SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 The tragic death this week of four U.S. officials, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, is a major turning point for Libya's transition to lasting stability. As details emerge, it appears increasingly probable that al Qaeda-linked groups were behind the violence, likely acting in reprisal for the death of Abu Yaya al-Libi, Al Qaeda's second in command, who was killed by a drone strike in Pakistan earlier this year. Just prior to the Benghazi assault, on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, al Qaeda leader Ayman al -Zawahiri released an Internet video in which, according to CNN, he said that al-Libi's "blood is calling, urging and inciting you to fight and kill the crusaders." Even if the deaths were not linked to al Qaeda or its dangerous North African affiliates, the event is still a major threat to Libya's chances of

successful transition to stability, and could be a watershed of the worst kind. The nightmare scenario that Libya could go the way of Iraq in 2004 is still not

likely, but no longer seems implausible. The Libyan government's public statements indicate they fully recognize the gravity of these

attacks. The immediate response, opportunity for Libya's new if any, must be adroitly measured government. More than any other and await a clear picture of the event since the fall of Tripoli, the facts. In a way, this tragedy is an LIBYA'S page 31

attacks should force the country's leaders to take a much more active approach to ensuring safety and security and pushing ahead with other state-building measures. If these attacks do not galvanize momentum for progress, they could undermine it entirely. Instability in Libya could, in turn, undermine progress elsewhere in a region where transitions are still fragile after the Arab uprisings. For their part, the United States, its allies, and partners that helped free Libya from Qaddafi's rule have a responsibility to do their utmost -- providing intelligence, technical advice, and, where necessary, military support -- to ensure the situation does not spiral out of control, squandering the investment that was made in toppling Muammar al-Qaddafi last year. One question many are asking the wake of Tuesday's events: Were the United States and its allies nave about the dangers in postintervention Libya? The attacks come on the heels of a gradual deterioration of the country's security in recent months. Last year's uprising began in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city, where Tuesday's attacks occurred. Qaddafi claimed the revolt was the work of terrorists, long native to Eastern Libya, and warned that if it were not crushed, the country could become the Somalia of the Mediterranean -- a string of radical "Islamic emirates" just across the water from southern Europe.

This was a gross exaggeration -the vast majority of the revolutionaries had no ties whatsoever to al Qaeda or other terrorist groups, and when Qaddafi moved to raze Benghazi with tanks and aircraft, the Arab League and United Nations condemned him. The United States, its NATO allies, and Gulf partners quickly intervened with massive airpower and a small number of special forces on the ground. The conflict dragged on, but in August, Tripoli fell, and in October, Qaddafi was captured and killed. After four decades of repression under Libya's selfproclaimed "Brother-Leader," Libyans emerged free to build their own future. But how much building has really been done? In contrast with nearly all other post-Cold War military interventions, NATO and its partners chose not to deploy postconflict stabilization forces when the war was over. The security situation seemed calm -- indeed much calmer than many had anticipated it would be. The putative Libyan authorities were adamantly against any such deployment, fearing their already limited legitimacy would be further weakened by the presence of foreign troops on Libyan soil. They needed full credit for their victory, they argued. Few outside powers were interested in putting "boots on the ground" anyway, since most Western leaders had promised that Libya would be very different from Iraq and

Afghanistan. Libya's new leaders were right to be concerned about their legitimacy: They evinced little control over Libya's territory and security, which, for all intents and purposes, was still in the hands of hundreds of armed revolutionary militias that had sprung up across the country during the revolution. Initial efforts to disarm, demobilize, and reintegrate these militias into a centralized Libyan army under the authority of Libya's leadership were quickly abandoned when it appeared that doing so might spark violence and undermine Libya's tenuous stability. Subsequent efforts to do so by international actors met with further resistance and even suspicion from Libyan authorities. Libyan hackles were raised by an initial effort by the British and others trying to help assess Libya's security-sector needs, further slowing reform and disarmament efforts. Meanwhile a hodgepodge of small-scale, apparently grassroots local disarmament initiatives went forward in an uncoordinated fashion. Luckily, the situation remained relatively calm. Over the course of the next several months, the delicate peace was punctuated by occasional clashes between the militias. Some of the fighting was between pro-regime holdouts and representatives of the new Libya. Other violence, however, was more parochial in nature, with militias battling over turf,in Tripoli and other cities.

Most of this violence, however, did not affect Libya's citizens or significantly hamper progress on other fronts. In July, Libya held successful elections, and moderate secular parties took a plurality of seats in the new Libyan congress. Most outside observers hailed these elections as a major success and evidence that Libya's future was brighter than many had once predicted. At the same time, however, troubling signs that the security situation was falling apart began to appear. Whereas most of the violence in the first half of the year involved small-scale turf wars between militias and struggles over access to smuggling routes in Libya's distant southern reaches, a new kind of violence had begun to emerge over the summer. This violence has come in three forms: First, attacks against Libyan government officials and buildings, both in Benghazi and in Tripoli. Car bombings and smallarmed assaults on government buildings indicated a different kind of threat than militia turf wars. Second, more aggressive actions by radical Islamist militias, who recently destroyed a number of Sufi shrines charging that Sufi practices are un-Islamic. Although it condemned these attacks, the Libyan government put its inability to stop them on full display, weakening its authority. Third, attacks against diplomats, including an attack against a U.S.

diplomatic vehicle in Tripoli and an attack on the British ambassador's car in Benghazi. Until this week, these attacks looked like isolated incidents. Now they appear in a different light. So who is responsible? While the reaction to the online release of an incendiary film viewed as offensive to the Prophet clearly set the stage for Tuesday's attacks in Libya and Egypt, the attacks in Benghazi, which involved small arms and rocket-propelled grenades, were clearly more than just a mob that got out of control and accidentally burned down the U.S. consulate. The first impulse of the Libyan government has been to point the finger at holdover Qaddafi-regime sympathizers. That Libya's new government should blame Qaddafi is understandable given how long they suffered under him and the fact that their authority comes from first defying and then ousting him. But while these claims are plausible, the evidence for them is thin. They seem more aimed more at keeping the spirit of the revolution alive in hope of distracting from the slow progress in other areas and the government's own lack of authority. More likely, groups in eastern Libya that have had ties to al Qaeda are involved. Concerns about groups such as the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), LIBYA'S page 32

which played an important role in Libya's liberation, are longstanding. Knowledge of such groups initially made several U.S. officials wary of intervention. Even if the LIFG appears now to support the new Libyan state, such concerns have not gone away. The eastern town of Derna is well known as a hotbed of radicalism and source of recruits for the insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. This summer, the Libyan authorities, reportedly arrested 20 suspected AQIM members on Libyan soil. Until now, Libya had enjoyed a relatively calm environment for its transition. To avoid a nightmare scenario, the Libyan government and broader public must use these attacks to galvanize momentum for progress on key fronts -- above all militia disarmament -- building necessary security institutions and establishing a just but effective control of its own territory. Most militias are benign. But as long as they persist, the fractured nature of Libya's security will create opportunities for calamities like this one.

Progress on these fronts, difficult already, will be even harder now because the attacks complicate Libya's relations with the United States and other Western powers. Most U.S. diplomats are being evacuated, and the embassy will likely go on lockdown. The security measures, coupled with the reduction in bandwidth, will seriously hamper the ability of U.S. officials to meet with their Libyan counterparts and access Libyan society at large. Many Western NGOs in Libya are grappling with whether to curtail their efforts, which would further slow progress toward transition. Meanwhile, the deteriorating security could introduce a new dynamic. The less able the Libyan state is to provide security for Libyan citizens, the more those citizens will turn to other forms of protection -- and the more the legitimacy of the new state and its officials will falter. In these conditions, the appeal of extremist elements could easily grow. No matter what happens in Libya, history will recall that NATO's intervention saved lives in Benghazi and opened new

prospects for Libya's future. But the post-conflict order has been in limbo ever since Qaddafi was killed last October. Libya is neither Iraq nor Afghanistan, let alone Somalia. It has much going for it that these post-conflict cases did not, including relatively unified citizens, wealth, a neighborhood comparatively conducive to stability, and a clear victory over the former regime. But Libya's future remains unwritten. NATO's intervention handed the country over to the Libyan people. Now they need to govern it, lest that opportunity slip from their hands. Fed Releases Latest Economic Forecast Which Will Be Proven 100% Wrong

With a few minutes to go until Ben speaks, the entirely useless projections are out (as noted before by Reuters that the Fed has been constantly wrong in its forecasts). The stunning punchline is that according to the Fed things are not as bad as one would have expected given the dramatic openended shart-fest that Bernanke is portraying. In fact, things are improving per the FOMC! Though we assume that these projections are self-defeating since they likely include this new policy. victories but they face sterner tests this week on the road against tough opponents. It is one thing to shine at home and another thing

Billionaire Howard Marks' latest memo to his Oaktree Capital Management clients [.PDF] is one of the most depressing things we've read on the economy. In the 14-page must-read entitled "On Uncertain Ground," the money manager details a gamut of issues that most concern him including the sluggish growth in the U.S., the U.S. deficit, the eurozone crisis, China, etc, just to name a few. Here's a rundown of a few of his thoughts on the U.S. economy that are, well, depressing. "The world seems more uncertain today than any other time of my life." If that ominous opening line from the 66-year-old famed money manager doesn't immediately get your attention, he says the U.S. is going to have sluggish growth for a long time. What's more is that's better than the rest of the developed nations. "It's my belief that we're going to relatively sluggish economic growth in the U.S. for a prolonged period of time. My expectations for other developed nations, given

Again, the Marks says that the U.S. is only safe relative to other countries. "So what do we find? Economic fragility throughout the world, I think, as well as a number of factors capable of exacerbating the situation in the short run or keeping it weak in the long. I can't remember a time when no jurisdiction was considered completely safe for investment, but that seems to be the case today. When people enthuse about the U.S., it's usually only in relative terms: 'the best house on a bad block.'" It's not all completely negative sounding... "The outlook certainly isn't so propitious (and assets aren't so cheap) as to call for investing aggressively. But at the same time, market conditions tell me this isn't a time for hiding under the bed. 'Move forward, but with caution' -- that's my mantra today. The environment is uncertain, but we shouldn't find that paralyzing." [Hat Tip: Pragmatic Capitalism] Please follow Clusterstock on Twitter and Facebook. THIS page 36

this is that we aren't looking at a period of prosperity. A recovery is underway and is likely to continue, but it is more likely to be lackluster than vigorous. Most Americans' financial memory consists of V-shaped recoveries and periods of good feeling like the 1990s, when they couldn't think of reasons not to borrow and spend. Five years from now, I think people will be asking, 'When will the economy get going? When will we get back to good times?'"

Episcopal Priest Speaks of Need to Reclaim Liberalism Within Biblical Christianity

Christendom. Or, to put it differently, I want Christians to reclaim the truths in the Bible that many conservatives seem to ignore, because they seem too "liberal"- truths such as God's commands for us to love our neighbors, care for the poor, and pray for our enemies. Classical liberalism is essentially the idea that individual human beings have intrinsic value, and that scholarly study, guided by the Holy Spirit, and unencumbered by church traditions, is a holy enterprise. This understanding emerged in Western thought in the Renaissance, and it gave rise to the Protestant Reformation. Two centuries later, in the Enlightenment, these same concepts would give birth to modern science. They would give rise to the understandings enshrined in our Declaration of Independence that all people are created equal and ought to enjoy religious and political freedom. Classical liberalism held that these rights are "inalienable," given by "the Creator." This strand of liberalism was the force that led to the founding of the American Republic. But in contrast to the American Revolution that rooted political liberalism in the truths of the Scriptures, the French Revolution rejected God and the church and

resulted in a much bloodier, ruthless, atheistic, and ultimately unsuccessful revolution. CP: You are talking about political liberalism. What does this have to do with the church? Liebler: Liberalism, like any philosophy, was initially a complex of ideas that had theological, political, and social applications. In other words, those Christians who believed in freedom and equality began to see such injustices as slavery as violations not only of liberal principles, but also of the Scriptures themselves. This led men like William Wilberforce in England, a devout follower of Jesus Christ, to spend his lifetime fighting against slavery, a battle that was eventually won. It led pastors like John Wesley, working with poor dock workers in Savannah, Georgia, to discourage alcohol and to develop "Sunday School," which taught literacy using the Bible as the principal textbook. Social reform movements for women's suffrage and the civil rights movement as well as the pro-life movement are all based in liberalism the idea that every human being has intrinsic rights but this form of liberalism is tied closely to the Bible and finds the source of those rights in God. These liberal reform movements

did enormous good. Most Americans do not know that in the early 20th Century, most British evangelicals were considered liberals! It's when you divorce liberalism from its roots in Scripture that you begin to see movements that advance abortion and same-sex marriage as "rights." If you take liberalism without the Bible, these movements are the logical results. But if you believe that the freedom of human beings is not absolute, but is limited by the guidance of the Holy Scriptures, then these movements are outside the bounds of Christian understanding. That is why I believe there is a desperate need for traditional Christians to reclaim liberalism as one of the reform movements within genuine, Biblical Christianity. CP: Do you see examples of such reform movements growing out of biblically based liberalism today? Liebler: Absolutely! Take the movement to stop human trafficking in the sex trade and forced labor industries. This movement has been largely led by Christian organizations such as International Justice Mission and the Salvation Army along with many smaller but equally devoted EPISCOPAL page 38

ministries. They are seeing thousands of men and women freed from modern-day slavery and given real opportunity for the future. There is still much to be done. And only recently have secular liberals awakened to this issue. CP: How does this kind of biblical liberalism differ from what you were taught in seminary, theological liberalism? Liebler: As I mentioned, liberalism is a movement that was born in the Renaissance, and really arose in force during the Enlightenment. You had thinkers such as John Locke who wrote about human rights being rooted in the existence of a Creator. But there were others who divorced those rights form any supernatural source. This was a time in which people in Europe were disgusted by a long history of religious wars between Protestants and Catholics. Many wanted to divorce human rights from any religious doctrine. They taught instead, albeit a bit irrationally, that the rights of freedom and equality were

intrinsic to humans and not the gift of any Creator. Some of the roots of today's liberalism come from this atheistic and antiChristian vision. It is this branch of liberalism-without-God that gave birth to liberal theology. Whereas classical liberalism believed in opposing oppressive or illegitimate authority (such as the American colonists opposing the tyrannical rule of King George III), anti-Christian liberalism believes in the right to reject all authority. That means the Scriptures themselves began to be rejected as a form of authority. This kind of thinking emerged out of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as the universities digested the writings of Freud, Darwin, and Marx. It first influenced theological scholarship through higher criticism, which in turn infiltrated the seminaries. Theologians who followed this strand of thinking felt free, in a sense, to create their own theology apart from the Scriptures. That is what I encountered in seminary. In a sense, we were taught that it is

okay to take the parts of the Scriptures we like, and leave the rest. The Scriptures are not the authority; we are. This is the opposite of biblical liberalism which finds its very source and power in the fact that a Benevolent Authority who himself designed us with free will is the foundation of all real freedom and liberty, cares for the poor and oppressed, and calls us to be agents of liberation. He conveys these principles to us chiefly through the Scriptures. CP: To conclude, how can Biblebelieving Christians distinguish anti-Christian liberalism from those elements of liberalism that are in line with the Gospel? Liebler: The first principal is to commit yourself not only to Jesus Christ as your personal savior but also to Him as your Lord and Master. As one submitted to Christ, allow no political or philosophical viewpoint to define your identity or to claim your loyalty. Second, let the Scriptures in their entirety speak judgment upon your life. If that judgment seems to be correcting ideas from

the right or the left, so be it. Let Christ be your master, not a political philosophy. Finally, take those biblically inspired injunctions and work to enact them in the world. If Christians today would follow this prescription rather than being hijacked by one political party or another, I believe we would see a new movement of God's power and wisdom applied to the social problems we face in our nation. The result would be increased hope, healing, and freedom to countless people far deeper and wider than any government program can offer. September 13, 2012| 2:07 pm The poll, conducted by Wenzel Strategies, also shows Mitt Romney leading President Obama by 20 points in the Show Me State, but some political scientists are wary of these numbers, saying those numbers are too inflated. "I don't buy that poll," University of Virginia Center for Politics political analyst Kyle Kondik told The Christian Post. "For one thing, if Akin is 15 points behind Romney, then that's not good." The RealClear Politics average in Missouri show Romney leading Obama by 7.3 percent and McCaskill up over Akin by 5.3 percent a far cry from the results of the latest Citizens United survey. In fact, Akin's biggest lead in early August and prior to his comments was only in the 8 percent range. "Will Romney win in Missouri? Sure he will," says Kondik, but I

don't believe it will be by 20 points. Based on what we see, I believe McCaskill is favored only because of Akin's 'foot-in-mouth' comments and that he's running a poor campaign. But we're in a pretty polarized era and there won't be a lot of ticket splitters, which she'll need if she's going to win." After meeting with key evangelicals many of whom are members of the Council for National Policy in Tampa just prior to the Republican convention, Akin said he was committed to the race and would stay the course even though the Republican Senatorial Committee and other GOP funders such as Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS said they were pulling their financial resources out of the race, leaving Akin on his own. It is not clear if they and similar groups will eventually send money Akin's way but for now that doesn't appear to be the case. Follow us

Akin's comments may have landed him in hot water, but nonetheless, he's counting on Missouri's growing conservative base to stick with him through Election Day. At a recent campaign event just south of Springfield, Mo., Akin told a crowd of about 150 supporters that there remained clear differences between he and McCaskill, the greatest being her support for President Obama's Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. "We are choosing the future of America," Akin said to cheers, citing the deficit, higher gas prices, tax increases and unemployment "you know that's a phony baloney number anyway because after looking for work for a year they take you off the list." Akin, also known for marching to the beat of a different drum, compares himself to former President Ronald Reagan on the issues of gun rights and abortion two issues that have the potential

to move lots of votes and reminding the crowd that McCaskill is opposed to both. Yet the question remains, will that be enough to defeat McCaskill in November? "I think McCaskill is up, but it's not a slam dunk," said Kondik. "But as I've said, even though I think Akin is a bad candidate, that doesn't make McCaskill a stronger candidate. It will be an election worth watching." The Wenzel Poll was conducted Sept. 10-11 and included 850 respondents who are likely voters. Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed were 50 years of age or older. Ultra-HD Video of Curiosity Rover's Landing Is the Best Yet

Adam Mann (Wired Top Stories)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:15:00 PM

Immerse yourself in every eyepopping detail of Curiositys harrowing plummet to the Martian surface in this new ultra-highdefinition video. The painstaking labor of love comes from filmmaker Bard Canning, who spent over a month getting every piece of the video in tip-top shape. Extrapolating the original Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) cameras low-res four frames-per-second video, Canning boosted it up to 30 frames per second and rendered the footage in 1080p. By adding hundreds of motion-tracking and adjustment points, he was able to create a

smoother ride and show off the most interesting features of the Martian surface. In order to watch the heat shield smoothly fall away, Canning separated the film into two independently moving layers and rendered each one separately. The result provides the best possible video accuracy while really enhancing the footage. On top of everything, Canning added something that other Mars descent videos have lacked: sound. Simulating the rovers booming entry from space into the high atmosphere and then the quieter whooshing winds of Mars as it was lowered on its supersonic parachute really adds to the realism of the video. When the sound of Curiositys rockets

kick in, you can almost feel yourself jerked back. The video seems to have struck a chord with people already, climbing to one of the top spots on Reddit this morning. To get a nice behind-the-scenes look at Cannings process, he has helpfully provided amaking of video. Home Depot Leaves Me With A Concrete Condo Floor And An Awful Lot Of Supplies
Laura Northrup (The Consumerist)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:30:26 PM

Navid's idea wasn't bad: he wanted to install wood floors in his condo, and chose to hire installers from the store where he bought the flooring and supplies, Home Depot. This should be a simple transaction: he gives them money, they come over and put floors in his condo. It's just that something that employees assured Navid wouldn't be a problem suddenly became a problem. There's a large dip and some cracks in his subfloor, and Home Depot's original rough estimate for how much it would fix to cost the problem was much lower than it should have been. Navid agreed to pay that expense, and the contractors walked off the job anyway, saying that they wouldn't be able to warranty the work. Now Navid is stuck with a lot of supplies and a ripped-up floor. The Home Depot is currently putting me through one of the worst customer experience of my life. I recently purchased a condo and decided that I wanted to replace the carpet with a wood floor. After ripping out my carpet, I was concerned because I found that my concrete subfloor had multiple

cracks and dipped slightly towards the center of the room. I talked to 3 different Home Depot flooring reps at a store #[redacted] who all said that the installer might have to put down a selfleveling compound before installing the wood, but that would be a fairly simple and inexpensive process. They all recommended scheduling an appointment to have someone come out, measure my condo, and look at the floors. I scheduled this appointment, and when the measurer came out, I asked him about the subfloors. He also told me they wouldn't be a problem. He said I might have to spend "one or two hundred dollars" extra to get the cracks filled and the floor leveled, but it wasn't a big deal. Based on this information, I decided to also rip out the laminate floor already in my kitchen and install the new wood there too so that my floors would be consistent throughout the condo. Over the next week, I talked to 7 or 8 different phone reps in Home Depots quote department getting quotes on different wood, underlayment, and molding combinations. I asked most of these reps if the uneven floors would be a problem (I wanted to err on the side of caution so I kept

asking to see if anyone had concerns), and they all said it wouldn't be a problem and quoted prices similar to what the measuring guy quoted. I decided to place my order, pick everything up from the store, and haul it into my 2nd floor condo (Quite a workout hauling 31 boxes weighing 40 lbs each upstairs). I then scheduled my install for the following week. My installers (contractors from [redacted]) showed up on the installation day and measured my condo again. After, they told me that my uneven floors would cause problems with any wood or laminate and recommended installing carpet. I explained to them that every Home Depot rep, including the measuring guy who came out and looked at my subfloor, told me it wouldn't be a problem. At this point, the installers tried to guilt me by telling me that the uneven subfloor would cause the wood to crack and break and the contractors would have to pay for it out of pocket since it would be under warranty. I asked if we could level the subfloor before the install, and I was told "it would cost a fortune" to do so. When I pressed to get a dollar figure, they said it would be a minimum of $1,000-$1,500

(way higher than the $100-$200 that I was quoted by multiple Home Depot reps). Since I had already paid for the job, hauled supplies into my condo, and ripped out the laminate floor in my kitchen that I wouldn't have ripped out otherwise, I agreed to pay to level the floor and get it over with. At this point, the installers started giving me the runaround saying that they weren't even sure leveling was an option and they would have to talk to their manager. They went outside for about 30 minutes and when they came back, they said they can't do the job because there's no way they would be able to warranty it (all of the sudden, doing the installation became their choice and not mine). We had a brief conversation about other options then they left. I went back to the Home Depot store and talked to a flooring manager and one of the original reps I talked to. They said that [redacted] is the only contractor they use in the [region], and if they won't do the install, then there's nothing they can do. They admitted that the Home Depot completely messed up, but they're not willing to do anything to help me. Throughout this process, I asked about 10 Home Depot reps about

my uneven subfloor, including one who came to my condo and looked at my floors, and every one of them told me that my subfloor wouldn't be a problem. Now I'm getting a different story on the install date and I'm left with supplies that I have to haul back to The Home Depot, no laminate in my kitchen, and concrete floors in my condo. I'm beyond frustrated at this point and The Home Depot isn't doing anything to help. Start by escalating to regional managers and other higher-ups who are higher than the store level. In the past, other customers have found success using the executive e-mail carpet bomb against Home Depot. Ask friends and colleagues if they know of a contractor who can help you out of your sad, floorless state. Who Is To Blame When Newegg Sends The Wrong Power Cord For Your Refurb Laptop?
Chris Morran (The Consumerist)

But when he pulled out the power cord, he noticed something was not right about the power cord. AC adapter, Reese contacted ASUS support: Asus informed me that yes indeed the issue described, with the context of receiving the small AC adapter, was most likely because Newegg had sent me the wrong adapter. Asus informed me that since the machine itself was functioning "as intended" I would have to contact the point of sale, in this case Newegg. So then he called Newegg, where a customer service rep said she would forward Reese's information to an internal review team and that he would be contacted by e-mail. Two days later, he finally received that e-mail, asking for my permission to release my contact information to the ASUS. "Whether I would be sent a new charger or not was never on the table for discussion," writes Reese. "I agreed and filled out the customer release form and was told I would be contacted in 3 days." After not hearing anything by that third day, Reese called Newegg again, only to be told that "unfortunately the whole system is down" and that the rep would

"write down my information and e -mail me with any updates or resolutions." Later that day, Newegg e-mailed Reese telling him he'd need to contact a company referred to as MetroPC (not MetroPCS, the phone people) if he wanted to get his issue resolved. He'd never heard of this company before and received no explanation what role it played in his order. And so then Reese contacted a third company (reminder: all to replace an AC adapter; something that should have been resolved with a single phone call). Luckily for Reese, the Metro rep was responsive, replying with a request for the laptop's serial number and the Newegg invoice. "After only a few minutes I receive an e-mail stating that the MetroPC rep will be ordering me a new charger from Asus," Reese tells Consumerist, "but that 'for future reference, you have a 90 day warranty with Asus.' Hold the phone, we're back to Asus support? I thanked the rep for her help but explained to her that this entire mess STARTED with Asus support, who referred me back to Newegg, and finally to MetroPC."

Reese has asked the rep for confirmation that he will be receiving the correct AC adapter and not just another one of the wrong adapter, but has yet to get a reply. "I just wanted to vent a little and share my (yet unfinished) story with other Consumerist readers," he writes. "Thanks for letting me blow off some steam." We're reaching out to Newegg to see why a simple AC adapter replacement would take this long -- and what role this Metro company plays in the whole process. Wii U launch price compared against history

Submitted at 9/13/2012 2:30:00 PM

In Japan, the Wii U is an expensive prospects, but that price didn't translate directly here in the States. With a lower-end SKUs, Nintendo is able to hit that $300 spot while catering to a more hardcore fan base. Gamasutra looked back at all of the previous console launches and documented their initial prices, adjusting for inflation. If the Sega Genesis launched today, it would cost $352; the original PlayStation would be $450. Just, uh, don't ask us what the Neo-Geo or 3DO would cost. ($1,138 and $1,113!) With the projected price inflation in mind, it's suggested that the Xbox 360 would be priced at $387 and the base model PS3 (it launched with two SKUs, remember?) would fetch $570. Sean University: Take your Monitor Situation to the Merrimax!

(Woot)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:35:00 PM

A lot of people use just one monitor to work. But a lot of people also whip each other with snakes for fun. Okay, maybe not a lot of people percentage-wise. But if you looked at the total number of everyone in history whod engaged in recreational snakewhipping, itd be a pretty big number easily 4 digits long. What Im getting at is, just because people do something doesnt mean its right. Now, we cant help if youve got snake-whippers in your office, but we can give some advice on how many monitors your employees need. A lot of businesses will try to optimize productivity by giving each of their employees two monitors: one for their email, and another for their work. Well, we here at the Sean Adams University of Business Development Management Leadership say, why stop at two?! Why not add MORE MONITORS? Consider how

productive your employees would be with one of the following setups: 3 Monitors: 1 monitor for email; 1 monitor for work; 1 monitor for another email address, so employees can email the address on the 1st monitor if they start getting depressed about not getting any emails. 4 Monitors: 1 monitor for email; 1 monitor for work; 1 monitor for slow-email-day email; 1 additional work monitor to be set up behind the employee in order to prevent tunnel vision. 5 Monitors: 1 monitor for email; 1 monitor for work; 1 monitor for slow-email-day email; 1 additional rear work monitor; 1 monitor displaying a webcam feed of the rear work monitor so employees arent always dropping everything theyre doing on the

1st work monitor to turn around and check if theres work to do on the rear work monitor. 6 Monitors: 1 monitor for email; 1 monitor for work; 1 monitor for slow-email-day email; 1 additional rear work monitor; 1 monitor for rear work monitor webcam; 1 monitor for employees to lend out in case other employees misplace one of their 6 monitors. 7 Monitors: 1 monitor for email; 1 monitor for work; 1 monitor for slow-email-day email; 1 additional rear work monitor; 1 monitor for rear work monitor webcam; 1 lending monitor; 1 monitor permanently displaying a map of what each monitor does (including itself) so employees always know where to look. 8 Monitors: 1 monitor for email; 1 monitor for work; 1 monitor for

slow-email-day email; 1 additional rear work monitor; 1 monitor for rear work monitor webcam; 1 lending monitor; 1 monitor map monitor; 1 monitor which, according to legend, possesses unspeakable power and can bring about a new era of knowledge and prosperity, but only if it is turned on when the time is absolutely right. 9 Monitors: 9 monitors is absolutely too many monitors. There! With one of these wonderful setups, your employees should be more productive than ever! But the above uses arent set in stone. In the comments, please let me know how you would use each of your 8 monitors!

West Nile virus outbreak may be deadliest on record This year's outbreak of West Nile virus is on track to be the deadliest on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The human toll from the mosquito-borne disease rose by about 35 percent, overall, since Sept. 6, to 2,636 cases, including 118 deaths. "We still believe that this year's outbreak is the largest to date and certainly the most serious," said Lyle R. Petersen, M.D., director of the CDC's Division of VectorBorne Infectious Diseases, at a press conference. As of this week, 1,405 (53 percent) of the West Nile virus cases have been classified as severe enough to affect the nervous system, in some cases causing encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and the spinal cord). "We're not out of the woods yet, by any stretch of the imagination," Petersen said. He expects large

numbers of cases to be reported for the next several weeks. Moreover, between 8 and 10 percent of the people who develop neuroinvasive disease will eventually die because of the infection, he said. The largest human toll from West Nile virus in the U.S. was in 2002, when 2,946 people fell ill with neuroinvasive disease and 284 died. "Based on historical data, we should either catch up or surpass the previous numbers as cases continue to roll in," Petersen said. Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have reported at least one human case of West Nile virus, so far this year. Two-thirds of the cases have been in six states (Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas) and 40 percent of all cases have been in Texas.

Today on Mars: Curiosity Is All Set to Sift Sand and Bake Rocks

Sand Sifter This image shows the open inlet where powered rock and soil samples will be funneled down into the Mars rover Curiosity for analysis. It was taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) on Curiosity's 36th Martian day, or sol, on Mars (Sept. 11 on Earth). MAHLI was about 8 inches away from the mouth of the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument when it took this picture. The entrance of the funnel is about 1.4 inches in diameter and the mesh screen is about 2.3 inches deep. Once the samples have gone down the 0.4-inch holes in the funnel, CheMin will be shooting X-rays at the samples to identify and quantify the minerals. Read more about what CheMin can do here. NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS NASA is almost done with a month-long set of tests designed to make sure every part of the rover is working. A battery of tests checking out the Mars rover Curiosity should wrap up today, and she's passing them all with flying colors. Very soon, the rover will start doing what it was sent to Mars to do:

Swallowing some soil, baking it and X-raying it, with the goal of finding out whether life could ever have survived on the planet. This image shows the entrance to the CheMin instrument (for Chemistry and Mineralogy), which will sift Martian dirt so it can be X-rayed. CheMin will identify minerals by examining the diffraction patterns of X-rays that pass through the spaces between atoms. Curiosity will roll again by this weekend, driving until scientists see a rock they want the rover to

touch, Curiosity mission manager Jennifer Trosper said in a news conference Wednesday. NASA is using images like these to check out Curiosity's instruments, part of a series of tests to make sure everything works as expected - or if not, how it works differently than expected. During the tests, the rover's arm team also gained some confidence maneuvering the arm under Mars' freezing temperatures and lowerthan-Earth gravity. This particular picture is a composite of eight separate

pictures from the Mars Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI, which were merged on the instrument before being beamed back to Earth. This is the first time MAHLI performed that combo technique since arriving at Bradbury Landing - usually, engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have to stich images together. You can also see some pebbles and sand - those were deposited on the rover deck during the sky crane landing. Stay tuned for the next drive!

Whooping Cough Vaccine's Protection Fades Quickly

Scott Hensley (Shots - Health Blog)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 10:24:00 AM

Ted S. Warren/ AP Nurse Fatima Guillen (left) gives 4-year-old Kimberly Magdeleno a whooping cough booster shot at a health clinic in Tacoma, Wash., in May. To protect children against whooping cough, doctors recommend five shots of vaccine before they turn 7. But what happens after that? How long does the protection last? Researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center checked it out. They compared 277 kids who came down with whooping cough, or pertussis, to more than 3,000 children who tested negative for it. Another comparison group consisted of more than 6,000 kids who were close matches to the sick kids on a bunch of factors, including sex, age and race. The key finding: The protection from the vaccine drops by 42

percent each year after the fifth shot. So kids who got all their shots on time could become quite susceptible to whooping cough again between ages 8 and 11. The researchers concluded we need a better vaccine than the current DTaP shot. (DTaP stands for diptheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis.) "Prevention of future outbreaks will be best achieved by developing new pertussis-

containing vaccines that provide long-lasting immunity," they wrote. The findings appear in the latest New England Journal of Medicine. The pertussis vaccine used today is relatively new. It's made with purified parts of the pertussis bacteria that spur an immune response, rather than whole pertussis cells that were in the

standard vaccine until the early 1990s. The switch was made because the older vaccine had more side effects, such as swelling and pain where it was injected. The new vaccine works, but not quite as well as was thought. "We know the short-term protection is very good," Tom Clark, an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention told USA Today. "But the protection is wearing off and that is the problem." Other researchers have zeroed in on the same issue. Last month scientists reported that children in Australia were about four times more likely to catch whooping cough after receiving the DTaP vaccine than those who got the older kind. Spotty vaccination rates are a problem in some places, like California, where whooping cough has roared backed recently. But the weakness of the current vaccine appears to be another factor in the resurgence of whooping cough. David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Cairo Embassy Statement in Tune with Obama U.N. Resolution

Helle Dale (The Foundry: Conservative Policy News Blog from The Heritage Foundation)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 12:56:53 PM

The statement Tuesday from the U.S. embassy in Cairo apologizing to Muslims and condemning the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslimseven as an angry, threatening mob was gathering outside the embassy compoundwas no aberration. Though subsequently denounced by both the White House and the State Department, it has to be seen as part and parcel of Obama Administration policy, and it is not surprising at all that it would be the first reaction of the embassys communication staff. As recently as December 19, 2011, the U.S. voted for and was instrumental in passing U.N. Resolution 16/18 against religious intolerance, condemning the stereotyping, negative profiling and stigmatization of people based on their religion. While this may sound innocuous, it was the latest incarnation of a highly controversial anti-blasphemy resolution that has been pushed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the United

Nations since 1999. The real aim of the antiblasphemy resolution is not to protect religion but to clamp down on freedom of expression. Accordingly, defamation of religion, by the definition of the 56-member OIC, could include things such as satirizing Mohammed in a newspaper cartoon or a YouTube video, criticism of Sharia law, or security check profiling. A report by the New Yorkbased Human Rights

First listed more than 50 cases in 15 countries where the enforcement of blasphemy laws have resulted in death sentences and long prison terms as well as arbitrary detentions, and have sparked assaults, murders, and mob attacks. The U.N. anti-blasphemy resolution has been put to the vote by the OIC in the Human Rights Councils every year since 1999 and in the General Assembly every year since 2005. It has

the trends. Now, after all these years, it's finally making a clean break (mostly). The company today took the wraps off a whole new logo, one that retains the old colors but does away with the overlapping, non-conformist letters -- or, as eBay President Devin Wenig puts it, a logo that's

"rooted in our proud history and reflects a dynamic future." You

can find the company's full explanation of the change at the link below, and look for the logo itself to actually be put into use by eBay in mid-October. Filed under: Internet, Alt eBay straightens out its logo after 17 years originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 Sep 2012

seven-point lead over Obama on what has been the biggest issue in this election cycle: Half the nations voters now trust Mitt Romney more than President Obama when it comes to dealing with the troubled U.S. economy, the number one issue on their minds as they go to the polls. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 50% of Likely U.S. Voters trust Romney more when it comes to handling the economy. Fortythree percent (43%) trust the president more. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Although Romney has consistently led the president in regular surveying when it comes to the economy, this is the highest level of trust hes earned since May when 51% expressed more confidence in him. The gap between the two candidates had narrowed to four points 48% to 44% by late last month. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Republicans and 15% of Democrats have more faith in Romney when it comes to the economy. Seventy-nine percent (79%) of Democrats and eight percent (8%) of GOP voters trust Obama more. Voters not affiliated with either party are almost evenly divided: 44% for Romney, 42% for Obama. Every other issue polled by

Rasmussen shows both candidates in a virtual tie, within the margin of error. Obama does best on national security, but only scores a 46/43 lead on that issue although hes +9 among independents, 45/36. Rasmussen pointedly notes that half of this poll was taken prior to the assassination of an American ambassador on the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, however, and questions arising about security preparations may quickly erode that lead, too. Interestingly, there is a huge gender gap on the economy question, but not in the way one would predict from the media conventional wisdom. Obama narrowly leads among women, 47 /44, but trails by 17 among men and cant even get to 40%, 39/56. Thats a +14 for Romney in the gender gap, which also happens to be the largest gender gap on any of the issues polled by Rasmussen. Finally, since I offered a buzzkill perspective on Florida yesterday, lets take a look at a new poll from the Sunshine State, reported by the Miami Heralds Marc Caputo: The Associated Industries of Florida business group has released snippets of a survey taken by Mclaughlin & Associates, a firm that typically

polls for Republicans, which finds Mitt Romney clinging to an inside -the-error-margin lead over President Obama, 50-47%, among likely voters. Thats an improvement of 5 points for Romney since August and a 3-point increase for Obama since the end of the Republican and Democratic conventions. Those previous AIF numbers differed from another preconvention surveys from Quinnipiac University and CNN/ Time/ORC(Although Public Policy Polling, which typically surveys for Democrats, found Obama up by just 1 before and after the conventions). Some of that is driven by the better off question, which Obama loses by 15 points, 40/55. Caputo has more info on the crosstabs, but I dont see anything about sample composition, so its hard to know how much to rely on this survey, which isnt exactly independent. Still, its worth at least a look. Ah yes, opponents cast the issue as an infringement on personal freedom, whereas the nanny statists [open] up a new, experimental front in the war on obesity. I may never understand why people routinely tolerate these everyday, ever-present intrusions from those who think were too dumb to take care of ourselves while also being very cross indeed about a fabricated ban on contraception, which amounts to my blocking access but not going personally to the CVS, slapping my $20 down, and delivering access unto their doorstep. The score remains: 2 liberal mayors who tried to ban a fried chicken joint in major U.S. cities, 1 liberal ( Independent) mayor who banned sodas, and 0 conservative mayors whove tried to ban contraception. This is why the podcast is called The War on Bacon. It is coming, and we must gird ourselves for battle if we wish to save cured meats. After all, obesity is the biggest

threat to national security. Meanwhile, a Massachusetts pie maker opted out of the EBT (food stamp) program at her local farmers market saying: The EBT program, or the SNAP benefits, its the old food stamp program, and theyre originally designed to provide nutritional foods for folks who cant afford to buy them on their own. Fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, cheese, products like that. What we make are a luxury or a gourmet dessert, which does not fit that criteria. And I just dont believe that the taxpayers money should be spent buying luxury or gourmet desserts for people who are having trouble putting nutritional food on their table in the first place. Andrea Tabers decision about how to run her private business in order to discourage taxpayer funding of unhealthy eating caused a bit of a firestorm. Id love to see a Venn diagram of those who support Bloombergs pioneering nanny-state work via government force but oppose

Tabers decision. Heres Ever So Humble pie company, if youd like to show her some love. The owner of the farmers market, who implemented the program, has released a joint statement with Taber saying shes welcome to opt out and remain part of the farmers market, and Taber says the e-mail feedback shes gotten has been overwhelmingly positive. Kids' 9/11 Assignment Draws Parent Outrage

(FOXNews.com)

Outrage over 4th graders' 9/11 assignment Is the sense of unity Americans felt after 9/11 gone? Parents of some elementary school students in Texas are furious over a class assignment in which children were asked to draw highly disturbing images depicting the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. The fourth-grade teacher gave specific instructions to students at Hughey Elementary School in El Paso, Ivie Gremillion, a parent of one of the students, told KFOXTV in El Paso. We had to draw the boom cloud, the planes hitting, and people jumping out of the windows, Gremillion's daughter told her after the assignment was given out on Monday. "We regret the insensitivity that this action may have caused and ... extend our sincere apologies. - El Paso school officials The drawing by Gremillions daughter depicted people jumping out of burning buildings yelling, 'Help,' and 'I love you,' while

another student's drawing showed a person saying: 'One way ticket to heaven.' "That's something that kids should get in trouble for drawing, Gremillion said. That's people being murdered, committing suicide. The lesson, however, did not stop there, Gremillion said. "The Afghans did this because they hate all of us and want to kill

all of us,'" Gremillion claims the teacher told her daughter. Gremillion said her husband, who joined the Army because of Sept. 11 attacks, will be deployed to Afghanistan by the end of 2012. "She's like, 'My dad's going to die,'" Gremillion quoted her daughter as saying. Gremillion said her neighbor's son, who drew another similar picture, was also emotionally

affected by the assignment. "He was under the impression this happens every 9/11, and he was scared to leave his house and go to school yesterday," she said. Gremillion said shed like a counselor to address the class to clarify the events of that day without the gruesome details. "She doesn't need to know that, not at her age," said Gremillion. "The way she worded [it] is just

teaching racism and hate for an entire nation, and that's not OK. In a statement to KFOXTV.com, El Paso Independent School District officials apologized for the assignment and said they spoke to the teacher, who said the terrorist attacks were part of a class discussion and that students were asked to draw something KIDS' page 64

US, Libya: Envoy Murders Timed To 9/11, Used Protests as Cover

(FOXNews.com)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:20:51 PM

A Libyan official said Thursday that the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was a planned, two-part operation that included a raid on a supposedly secret safe house -- an account that comports with what a top U.S. lawmaker told Fox News a day earlier. On Wednesday, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers told Fox News that the strike was a "coordinated, military-style" operation. Wanis al-Sharef, eastern Libya's deputy interior minister, then said on Thursday the attacks were suspected to have been timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary and that the militants used civilians protesting an anti-Islam film as cover for their action. The same official also told Reuters that arrests have been made in connection with the investigation. It's unclear whether those arrested are chief suspects. Sharef said "some people have been arrested," but stressed the Libyan government is still "gathering evidence." Separately, Sharef offered new details about the operation behind

the attack Tuesday. He said U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and another official were killed in the consulate, but that the attackers timed a second wave on the safe house just as Libyan and U.S. security forces were arriving to rescue evacuated consulate staff. He said that second wave killed two more Americans and wounded nearly 30 Libyans and Americans. The comments continued to

contradict initial reports that the attack was a product of angry and violent protests over an anti-Islam film. Rogers told Fox News he has "no doubt" it was a planned attack and had nothing to do with the film. "It was a coordinated, militarystyle, commando-type raid," Rogers said. Based on his own briefings, Rogers said "military movements" were involved. "This was a well- planned, welltargeted event. No doubt about it,"

Rogers said. He said the Al Qaeda -linked Imprisoned Omar Abdul Rahman Brigades is one group being looked at by officials. Senior Obama administrations who discussed the attack late Wednesday could not say whether it was coordinated or spontaneous. But they, too, described a twophase assault. They said the attack started at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday, when the main consulate

building started taking fire. Shortly before midnight, everybody in that building was evacuated to a nearby annex. However, at midnight the annex came under fire as well. During the two-hour attack, officials said, two more Americans were killed. Fox News' Catherine Herridge and The Associated Press contributed to this report. Print US, page 65

Feds: Sebelius Broke Law By Campaigning for Obama

(FOXNews.com)
Submitted at 9/13/2012 1:20:50 PM

FILE: Oct. 31, 2011: Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is seen in the Oval Office at the White House. AP Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius violated federal law when she campaigned this winter for President Obama, federal investigators announced Wednesday. Sebelius broke the law by making extemporaneous partisan remarks during a speech in February at a Human Rights Campaign Event in Charlotte, N.C., according to the Office of Special Counsel (OSC). She made the comments in the city that would later host the Democratic National Convention. "One of the imperatives is to make sure that we not only come together here in Charlotte to present the nomination to the president, but we make sure that in November, he continues to be president for another four years," Sebelius said, according to the agency and reported first by The Hill newspaper. The agency said Sebelius comments violated the Hatch Act,

which prohibits public officials from campaigning in an official capacity. The agency said the Department of Health and Human Services after the event reclassified the trip from official to political and that the federal government was reimbursed for related costs. However, the OSC still concluded Sebelius had violated federal law and has sent the report to the president -- the procedure for a government official

appointed by a president and confirmed by the Senate. OSC spokeswoman Ann OHanlon said there is no formal rule for dealing with an appointed official in violation of the act. However, the agency investigates at least 100 cases such cases annually with a great majority of them being resolved internally and violators getting a suspension. O'Hanlon said the remaining cases are sent to the Merit System Protection Board, which can

decide to terminate the employment of non-appointed federal employees or give them a 30-day suspension. Still, Maureen Ferguson and Ashley McGuire of the Catholic Association are calling for Sebelius resignation. Throughout her tenure at Health and Human Services, most of Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' actions have advanced the president's political interests, they said in a joint statement.

Sebelius could not be reached late Wednesday afternoon, but her response to the findings is supposed to be in the report forwarded to the president. She also discussed state politics in the Feb. 25 speech, urging voters to defeat a ballot proposal opposing gay marriage and to elect a Democratic governor, according to The Hill.
