Thursday 27t h May 2010 Last week campaigner Haydn Lewis died age 53, below is a tribute to him written by Susan Watts of BBC1 Newsnight. Haydn was given blood products which were contaminated with HIV he was also exposed to vCJD. Haydn was a lovely guy, always smiling and whatever life threw at him he remained undefeated and upbeat. He was so thoughtful when talking about my Andrew, so sensitive to me as a grieving mum Haydn was so understanding and caring acknowledging my heartbreak despite his own pain and losses. The world is a much sadder place without Haydns lovely lilting welsh accent, I will miss his courage and his humour but most of all the man who stood up for the rights of others, who couldnt be silenced, another clear and informed voice for my Andrew and victims of vCJD. Kenneth Clarkes decisions during his time as Health Minister and Secretary allowed contaminated blood/blood products to be given to UK haemophiliacs, these have killed, maimed and disabled thousands many of them children under the aged of 16. Haydn like many in the UK haemophiliac community was unlawfully infected with HIV and also exposed to vCJD, due to the medicine he was given to treat his haemophilia. Kenneth Clarke has never shown any remorse about his deliberate and measured decisions that have wrecked so many lives and stolen so many futures. Hundreds have died of vCJD, thousands have died through contaminated blood products and millions of us could be carrying vCJD, and yet Kenneth Clarke continues in his role as Lord Chancellor and remains a free man? The world is a much sadder place without Haydn and my Andrew two men with integrity, honesty and kindness. information request he had been chasing for years came through on Thursday. Haydn was told about it. Haydn wanted to see a letter from 1990 from the- then Chief Medical Officer, Sir Donald Acheson, to Kenneth Clarke, who was then Secretary of State for Health. This was when the government faced litigation from the haemophilia community over their infection with HIV through contaminated blood products. The letter could prove an important missing piece in a puz z le Haydn had been putting together for years. The Information Commissioner's ruling came through yesterday - that these papers should now be disclosed, and that the Department of Health (DoH) breached the freedom of information act in its handling of this request. The DoH now has 35 days in which to release the letter, or appeal. Haydn died disappointed that Gordon Brown felt unable to take up an invitation to visit him, to learn about how widows of haemophiliacs often struggle to make ends meet. An early sign will be how they handle a court ruling, shortly before the election, and after Haydn's last appearance on Newsnight. That ruling found in favour of composer Andrew March, also a haemophiliac. He challenged the Labour government's position over compensation in the UK, as compared with that in Ireland, and won. Haydn had developed liver cancer following infection with the Hepatitis C virus. He had survived a liver transplant, but the cancer returned. It's hard to imagine the strength of character that drove him. Not only was Haydn also living with HIV and the likelihood that he had been exposed to vCJD, he also lived with the knowledge that all of this was the result of contaminated blood products aimed at treating his haemophilia. These were given to him by the National Health Service, in the 1970s and 80s, under successive governments. Haydn wanted to understand what went wrong, and he unearthed more about this than pretty much anyone, and did so not just for himself but for scores of other families he knew who were, and are, in a similar situation. He was a walking encyclopaedic guide to the thousands of government documents in which officials, scientists, doctors and politicians revealed how thousands of haemophiliacs became infected just like Haydn. All the more remarkable then that Haydn became the generous man who will be missed by so many people from today. He and his wife Gaynor struck me as more like a teenage couple, than a team married for 35 years with two sons and a grandson, on whom Haydn doted.

They were a remarkable pair. Haydn had inadvertently infected Gaynor with HIV, yet their bond was strong. They were hardly ever out of each other's sight. Haydn was very funny, and giggled with a sometimes childish sense of humour. I spoke to him often, and he was always positive. I'm glad we managed to speak on Tuesday, when he chuckled about having a foot massage in the hospice in Cardiff near his home. He also told me he was tired. I'll miss Haydn. He had become a friend as well as a reliable and informed advisor. Haydn was only 53. He had a lot more to give. Monday 24 t h May 2010 Here is a photo of a young man called Gianluca Sgueglia from Italy, who died on June 9 th 2009 aged 33. His family were told by medics in 2003 that Gianluca was dying of a rare prion spongiform encephalopathy when in fact all symptoms led to believe that he was actually dying of vCJD. Due to the fact that genetic tests performed at the time on Maria Luisa and Francesco, Gianlucas parents, proved that this was not a case of hereditary or familial CJD, the medical experts in Italy came up with a theory, which has no scientific value as it is not observable, repeatable or verifiable, according to which Gianluca had a different genotype and a mutated gene due to a mistake that took place in the spermatogenesis/oogenesis process. They also stated that because of the fact that Gianluca had suffered symptoms of the disease for many years it could not have been vCJD. Nine months after Gianlucas death, his brother Antonio and Mother Luisa and Father Francesco have been informed by the Italian health authorities that GianLuca is believed to have died of sCJD. Truth is that until BSE it was virtually unheard of for a person to develop CJD under the age of 55 years old. Sporadic CJD is usually very sudden and death can be a matter of months or even weeks. Gianluca was suffering from problems such as coordination, balance and orientation for nearly 10 years. Antonio and his family are convinced that Gianluca died of vCJD and continue to battle with the authorities in Italy for what they see as the correct diagnosis. Lack of transparency, openness and honesty is creating a web of intrigue and lies surrounding many cases of CJD. The Sgueglia family, like many globally, are challenging the establishment wanting answers to their loved ones untimely deaths. For this purpose Antonio, Maria Luisa and Francesco Sgueglia have funded a non- profit organiz ation named Gianluca Sgueglia, whose mission is, among other things, to promote truthful and accurate information on spongiform prion diseases, raising public awareness and promoting the creation of pilot centers for the diagnosis, care and research on such diseases. On the 12th May 2010, Kenneth Clarke was appointed Lord Chancellor and Head of the Justice Department in the new Prime Minister David Camerons coalition government. As a mother who has lost a child unlawfully to vCJD, I am appalled at this appointment and have written to Clarke, Cameron and Clegg demanding Clarkes resignation. Kenneth Clarke is now in charge of the courts, law making, freedom of information, prisons and his role is seen as strengthening democracy and human rights. In his speech during the acceptance of his role as Lord Chancellor Clarke said his job was to promote fairness liberty and the public interest.The hypocrisy of those statements are like barbs to my broken heart. Where is the justice in this reward and appointment? When during his time as Health Secretary 1988- 1990 and Health Minster 1982- 1985 Clarke allowed MRM the most infectious part of a BSE infected cow hourly and for years into the food chain. He didnt stop MRM going into baby food until 1988, Cow and Gate tell me that MRM was put in its baby food jars from 1983- 1988,( this means thousands of UK babies and infants were exposed to BSE and its lethal pathogen vCJD) many of those young babies became teenage victims of vCJD. As Health Minister who would condone putting cows brains, spinal cords and the parts of an animal in baby food that is usually binned, Clarke did as there was lots of money to be made for the Beef Industry and shareholders. Clarke refused to stop the production of MRM ( which was in the human food chain to at least 1997) and condoned and allowed it to be used in school meals, feeding the elderly in nursing homes, hospital food, armed forces and for students at college and University. As Secretary and Head of the Department of Health who was warned repeatedly abut the lethal risks that BSE held for human health he is culpable and criminally responsible. So how can he sit at the head of the justice department in the UK? Clarke. Also condoned, encouraged and allowed BSE infected herds to be used in the process and manufacture of vaccines. This man is culpable for hundreds of deaths and has left us all with a ticking health time bomb. Kenneth Clarke with those others named and shamed on this website hold the smoking gun that unlawfully killed my Andrew how can Clarke be in charge of the justice department when so much blood is on his hands? Individuals have already died after receiving blood contaminated with vCJD. During the demonstration we were joined by children, pensioners, the disabled and many concerned members of the public, including mums and individuals who have given or received blood. Many families who have lost or are nursing current victims of vCJD also attended and spoke about their experiences. With this blog is also a photo of one of the mounted police who with two squad cars and quite a few police moved us on from outside Downing Street. Our demonstration though challenging was peaceful with many of the protestors young children or elderly. I was assured when I applied for the licence to hold the demonstration that policing would not be needed. The demonstration was approved by the Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, Chief Inspector of Police as well as Palace of Westminster Civil being informed. The police took my name and details and questioned the legality of the demonstration, I am aware that many members of the Police are sympathetic to the campaign, after all members of the Police and Armed Forces have also died of vCJD. But orders from above and the puppet masters that killed my son demanded that Police Officers moved our protest away from Downing Street. This did not deter our protest which continued throughout Whitehall and outside the Houses of Parliament for over two hours. This was filmed by BBC, European Television Channels and UK regional and international media. It would seem that our protest made the establishment nervous, because they know our banners, goals and challenges are fair and truthful. The Ministers and Government officials who unlawfully killed my Andrew and all victims of vCJD are still trying unsuccessfully to keep the lid on the facts and truth behind the BSE scandal and their culpable roles within that debacle. Below is part of the speech I made outside Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday May 4 th 2010.The number of cases and people dying of vCJD are being hidden and manipulated by the Department of Health. Numbers of people dying of vCJD have never been recorded accurately. Ministers and the new Government need to act nowto stem the flow of deaths here in the UK and globally. Today we are demanding on behalf of the UK public: That infected material is kept out of the food and medicine chain, BSE is still affecting UK herds. We want all blood donors to be individually screened for vCJD. Our blood supply is not safe or free of vCJD and the easiest way to transmit vCJD is through blood. Tests have been used in Europe and abroad on thousands of blood donors. UK scientists employed by the Department of Health are secretly already testing individuals for vCJD. Yet Whitehall is blocking implementation of mass screening of blood donors. We want investigations into links between CJD/dementia and BSE. Cases have tripled since BSE. We want justice and accountability for the unlawful deaths of so many UK citiz ens. If these issues are not addressed and acted upon we face a possible epidemic of deaths of the human form of made cows disease, due to contaminated blood and blood products. The government has recorded 168 deaths due to variant CJD - caught from infected bovine material - but this figure is contested as being inaccurate because many of the families who have lost a loved one to this devastating brain disease say that they were never recorded in the official statistics. Victims are also recorded as 'sporadic CJD', which was the original and very rare form of CJD that can occur in anybody and is not related to infected cattle. Some cases, even in people in their teens and twenties, are put down to 'early onset altz eimers disease'. Those left to nurse their husband's, son's, daughter's and wives through the terminal illness say that this is part of a cover up to protect pharmaceutical industries, who use bovine products widely in medicines and vaccines. Unsafe Blood Donations Eighteen UK blood donors later died of vCJD and their blood was used to make vaccines and medicines such as factor 8 which is given to haemophiliacs. . Despite this, the government refuse to screen donated blood. An effective test is available but they will not use it. Why not? Maybe because screening people's blood would reveal the true magnitude of the problem, which would be a disaster of epic proportions for government, the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. UK blood bags have warning labels on them due to being possibly contaminated with vCJD and they are not allowed for donation in any other country in the world apart from the UK. If citiz ens of other countries are afforded some protection via this blood ban, why aren't UK citiz ens offered the same protection through a screening program? The protestors were also demanding that the screening of blood begin immediately to prevent more people dying of this highly avoidable disease. Real Victims, Real Stories The demonstration began by the Big Ben and then moved to Downing Street, the Prime Minister's residence, where protestors were quickly met by police on horseback and asked to leave. Not giving up easily, they then marched to Parliament Square Gardens and demonstrated outside parliament. The organiser, Christine Lord, lost her only son Andy Black, to vCJD when he was only 24. He didn't eat beef or have a blood transfusion so she thinks his vCJD occurred from eating school meals with mechanically recovered meat in them or through the vaccinations he had as a child. Interestingly, all of his vaccine records from the age of five, disappeared, as did the records of many other victims. Another campaigner, Anthony Seaton, lost his mother to vCJD, but authorities tried to pass her death off as a stroke. It was only after Mr. Seaton complained that his mother had not had a stroke and had in fact, been deteriorating daily prior to her death, that they eventually changed the cause of death to CJD. That was not before they had had a committee meeting to discuss what they should put on her death certificate. Mr. Seaton and other campaigners like him, are convinced that this problem is widespread. Monday 10t h May 2010 One of the many questions asked by the CJD Surveillance unit here in the UK is whether victims of vCJD had connections with animals, pets or pet food. This area of inquiry is I believe another part of the jigsaw puz z le that has killed so many innocent people. During my most recent investigations I have found that at least three cats, one rabbit and three dogs, companions and pets of victims of vCJD have all died of neurological and physical symptoms, similar to CJD. These pets died just before, during or just after their owner died of vCJD. How can this be coincidental? . Two of the cats were taken after death by government authorities and given secret autopsies. What are the government and its Whitehall officials keeping secret this time? Why are the establishment twenty six years after the first recorded case of BSE still hiding information and evidence? What is the real source of vCJD infection? We know that many farmers and people who have lived and worked on farms have also succumbed to vCJD. Domestic pets and the environmental connections between farm and domestic animals is significant.. How many other pets or animals connected to vCJD victims have also died of similar co ordination, dementia and balance problems? Evidence to be submitted to the BSE Inquiry next month will show that it was a only crucial meeting between the pet- food industry and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture (Maff) that finally convinced the government to give the human food chain the same safeguards as pet food. Statements to the inquiry from senior civil servants reveal that the Department of Health objected to the introduction of a ban on specified bovine offal (SBO) because of the ''adverse publicity'' it would cause. Experts now agree that the SBO ban was the single most important government measure to limit the amount of highly infected material entering the human food chain. Dr Jeremy Metters, deputy chief medical officer at the Department of Health, has already told the inquiry that there was a departmental policy in 1989 to oppose an SBO ban, supported by Sir Donald Acheson, the chief medical officer. ''It was not at that stage the Department of Health's line and there was a down side to it, because it [the ban] would have drawn attention to the problem of pharmaceuticals,'' Dr Metters said. The pharmaceuticals problem referred to concern raised by a committee of experts, led by Sir Richard Southwood, the Oxford z oologist whose report in February 1989 highlighted the risk of taking medicines made with bovine tissues. The Southwood committee had not mentioned an SBO ban in its report - although it did deal with a limited ban on using offal in baby food - and this was widely seen as support for the idea that a universal ban was not necessary. Thursday 29t h April 2010 Here is a photo of my Emma (centre) with her friends toasting her twentieth birthday but also her safe return to the UK. She was stranded in New York for 6 extra days due to the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano. I like to thank the Gallasi family and people of New York and its suburbs for the kindness they showed Emma and her friend Joe. Without their hospitality and care, Emma and Joe would have had no place to stay. Their airline company and insurance refused to help and accommodation was at a premium and virtually non existent as thousands of people became stranded. The kindness of strangers and ordinary people continues to give me hope and really touched my bruised and battered heart. Thursday 22nd April 2010 Below is a table of the landfill sites in which thousands of BSE infected cattle were buried between 1988- 1991, the figures underneath are a rough estimate of the numbers of BSE infected animals who were buried and disposed in these plots of land. Environmental experts have expressed concerns for decades about BSE and its lethal pathogen vCJD leaking into the water supply. As one scientist said to me BSE is endemic in the UK herds and is everywhere in the fields, land, rivers and streams. Many of these sites are near homes of individuals who have died of vCJD. Tony Cushion, 57, pleaded guilty to two charges of feeding dog biscuits containing animal protein to his animals, one charge of failing to identify his supplier and three charges of failing to maintain proper records, when he appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court yesterday. The court heard the case was so serious it had been brought to the attention of then food minister Hilary Benn. Fifteen cattle belonging to Cushion, from Owens Close, Long Stratton, who runs Old Chapel Farm in Tasburgh, had to be slaughtered to prevent contaminated food entering the human food chain, and another 15 of his cattle had "vanished", the court heard. After the case, Andy McArdle, from Norfolk Trading Standards, who also prosecuted the case, said: "The fine demonstrates the seriousness of the case and the fact it was brought to the attention of a government minister. "The magistrates have issued a warning to all farmers involved in the human food chain that they cannot feed their animals with food containing meat protein, and that they need to keep their record keeping in order. "Thirty- eight errors were found in the defendant's bookkeeping, which could not have been an accident, and at least 15 animals appear to have vanished off the face of the earth." Earlier, Mr McArdle told the court the laws governing animal feed were brought in following the outbreaks of (BSE) bovine spongiform encephalopathy and its human variant, CJD, in previous decades. Trading standards officers visited Cushion's farm last July and a sample of the dog food fed to the animals was found to contain animal bone and muscle. In explanation, Cushion said the dog food he fed his animals had been refused by his partner's pets, he said. Officers seiz ed 97 cattle passports - containing the histories of each animal owned by Cushion - from his home and found that 15 of the 97 animals could not be traced. It was so serious that it was brought to the attention of Mr Benn, said Mr McArdle. In mitigation, Tim Carey said Cushion was a small farmer, who was trying to make a living in tough times. He said: "Mr Cushion knows he cannot under law feed offal to pigs and cows, but he did not know he could not feed pellets of dog food to them. He also did not know the dog food contained the animal protein. "He's made a mistake and is mortified at what he's done. This is not a case where a farmer deliberately flouts the rules to make a commercial profit." He said the 15 animals slaughtered were worth about 5,700 and Cushion had not kept the records up to date because of a mix- up with his partner, who did the paperwork.

Monday 12t h April 2010 There is a cluster 8 young people who have died of vCJD within 20 miles of our home in Portsmouth. Two of the victims had polio vaccines from the same batch and died within weeks of each other. Many members of SEAC were involved and knew about BSE in its earliest days and played down the significance of the threat to human health. I have a memo in which SEAC states that BSE material is not harmful to the vulnerable including children, the elderly and pregnant women..this was widely circulated in schools and school kitchens to allay growing fears. My Andrew had vaccines at a similar time to these young men that also died of vCJD.and yet we are told there is no connection?.

Two youngsters who contracted the human form of mad cow disease received the same polio vaccination derived from calf foetuses, government scientists revealed. The extraordinary coincidence has raised the prospect that millions of people who received the vaccine in the late 1980s and 1990s could be at risk. Experts on the Government's BSE advisory committee, SEAC, insisted there was no cause for alarm and described the risks as 'infinitesimally small'. However families who have lost loved ones to the appalling condition said the history of BSE had been littered with bogus reassurances and blunders. The fact that two youngsters had received the same vaccination emerged as experts investigated five cases of vCJD in the Southampton area. They were among 80,000 people to be vaccinated from the same delivery of polio vaccine. A further six million were vaccinated from material derived from the same specific source. And as many as 60million doses of vaccine created from cow foetuses have been given to Britons over the years. Medical experts had told the Government that no such serum should be used from British cows after 1989. However last year it emerged that a

loophole in the system meant that it continued to be administered. In fact, vaccine derived from British cows went on being used right up until last year, when the Department of Health finally discovered the loophole and recalled the product. Failures in the accurate collection of medical records mean that it is impossible to know precisely which other children and adults received vaccine from the same batch. Similarly, it is almost impossible to know whether the more than 100 victims of human BSE identified so far were given the same vaccine. Most babies are given the polio inoculation within the first six months of life, there is a booster at around the age of four and teenagers get another booster on leaving school. The two youngsters are part of a cluster of five people from the Southampton area who have developed the disease. One was given the vaccine shortly before leaving school and the other by medical staff at a further education college in the city - most probably on a sugar lump - in late 1994. Experts on SEAC said there may have been other possible, but so far undiscovered links, between the youngsters. Both were diagnosed in the last two years and the vaccine connection was subsequently discovered by an investigation of their lifestyles, eating habits and upbringing. The chairman of SEAC, Professor Peter Smith, played down the connection, suggesting it was a coincidence rather than evidence of a link to the vaccine. 'We are not linking the vaccine to these two cases, ' he said. 'These are two cases who happened to receive this batch of vaccine. 'These cases were identified because there were five in the Southampton area. 'They were intensively investigated and one of the things discovered was that they received the same batch of vaccine. 'The simple fact that they lived in the same area meant they were likely to have had vaccine from the same batch. There may have been other similarities. 'The vaccine is generally given to infants, but quite a lot of us are given the vaccine at later ages, as happened with these individuals.' The vaccine was made by Wellcome, now part of the Glaxo- SmithKline pharmaceutical giant, at laboratories in Bromley, Kent, in the late 1980s. Subsequently the vaccine was sold to a company called Medeva which distributed it to the NHS under the brand name Evans. Linda died of CJD aged 38 on 6 th Feb 2010. This mother of six had never been ill, or visited the UK. For ten years Linda and her family lived in Nebraska, USA. Six years ago she worked at the Tyson factory. Preparing cattle for the human food chain. She was exposed to spinal fluids and brain tissue from cattle. Her family are convinced that Lindas illness and horrific death must be connected to her repeated exposure to the brains and spinal cords of cattle. They are struggling to get any support in their efforts to find answers and the truth.
