Andrew I. Koven, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc.


By Teresa Cajot Earlier this month Andrew I. Koven was appointed to the position of Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer, and General Counsel at Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty biopharmaceutical company. In his new position Koven will be responsible for the legal functions, government affairs, and technical operations of the company.

Koven brings with him more than 26 years of legal experience, the majority of which was spent in the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to accepting employment with Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Koven served as President and Chief Administrative Officer of Neurologix, Inc. Before that, he functioned as the Executive Vice President and the Chief Administrative and Legal Officer at Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he was responsible for directing all legal, quality and compliance, corporate development and licensing and technical operations before the company was acquired by Merck & Co. Koven also spent three years with Sepracor Inc., prior to its 2009 acquisition by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. During his time at Sepracor Inc. he served as the companys Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary and was heavily involved in the management of intellectual property, employment, regulatory, corporate governance, litigation, compliance, commercial transactions, sales and marketing, and mergers and acquisitions. He also served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary at Kos Pharmaceuticals, Inc. until the company was acquired by Abbott Laboratories in 2006.

He spent three years as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at the Lavipharm Corporation, a drug delivery and specialty pharmacy company and held several positions at the Warner-Lambert Company from 1993 to 2000, most recently serving as the companys assistant general counsel for Pharmaceuticals, North America. Prior to entering the pharmaceutical industry in 1993, Koven was a corporate associate at Cahill, Gordon & Reindel in New York City as well as Counsel of the Corporate Investment Division for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. He earned his LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School in Canada and his LL.M from Columbia University School of Law in New York City. He holds a BA in Political Science from Dalhousie University. Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is involved in the development and marketing of products to specialists including urologists, endocrinologists, select primary care physicians, rheumatologists, and hand surgeons, as well as subsets of orthopedic, general, and plastic surgeons who concentrate on the hand.
