What Apple's Competition Did

Focused mostly on smartphones, where the money is, $$$ Mostly ignored media players Tried to enter tablets but had limited success

On June 2007, Apple created a new class of smartphone with the iPhone and was an instant hit On Sept 2008, Google released Android. It was adopted by many old smartphone makers to compete with Apple RIM and Microsoft upgraded their platforms but have not attracted enough customers to be taken seriously

Why We Teach Apple

Android has more smartphones, but Apple is still way ahead in media players and tablets. Apple designed iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad as a family, while Android devices are individual products with many differences Apple devices are quickly updated to the latest iOS version, but Android updates are scheduled by the various vendors and have been slow

Android users are spread over many makes, models and versions Apple iOS users share a common experience and can help each other User experience is likely to be more similar between an iPhone and iPad than between two different Android phones

There is more to Apple vs Android but we can defer this for Open Discussion if there is interest

For now, we will focus on the Apple iOS devices

Back to the PC problems

Must be used on an open surface Using a mouse is unnatural Challenge to learn Difcult to setup and maintain Virus prevention is a hassle

We brought some devices to show the obvious, mobile devices don't need a working surface

Apple vs Android

Apple Promotes Simplicity

Apple controls the user experience Focus on making apps work together Emphasize beauty and the market will follow Breaks with the PC legacy Every apps maintains its own les

Android Offers Choice

Gives control to the device makers and users Openness allows for a large variety of apps Try to satisfy various market niches Maintains some connection to the PC legacy Has a traditional le system

Closed vs Open
Apple maintains simplicity by keeping iOS for itself, closed to outsiders Google created Android as an open platform and variety and choice was the result as more device makers adopted Android

Apple is Closed
Only Apple makes iOS devices Apple creates their own standards for equipment designed to work with iOS devices Third party apps require Apple approval

Android is Open
Any device maker can use and modify Android for free Android can support industry standards to work with existing equipment App developers have more access to the underlying operating system

"The comparison between what Microsoft wrought in the 1980s and what Google was trying to do in 2010 was not exact, but it was close enough to be unsettlingand infuriating. It exemplied the great debate of the digital age: closed versus open, or as Jobs framed it, integrated versus fragmented."

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

Apple is Integrated
Devices have similar hardware Common user interface Devices have similar built-in apps App store exclusivity controls app quality iOS updates are quick and painless

Android is Fragmented
Each model can supports different set of hardware Models may have unique user interface extensions Each model has its own set of built-in apps Many app markets but may be limited by maker Android updates must be customize for the device which can delay the release if released at all
