CHAPTER 2 COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Mr. DILEEP KUMAR (Post R.

ORGANIZATION: It is a group of people working together to achieve same goal. COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS: 1. A process by which people, health services and agencies of the community are brought together to; Learn about common problems Identify these problems as their own Plan the kind of action needed to solve these problems act on this basis 2. A process , where nurse empowers individual, group or community to solve common health problem to achieve common goals such as universal health care services. Examples
1. Voluntary Health Organization (SADA welfare, Child Aid, PAF) 2. Womens Welfare Organization, APWA (All Pakistan Womens Association) 3. Voluntary welfare organization(EDHI, Chhipa, Sailani, Al-Falah Welfare Society) 4. Youth welfare organization (Scouts girls guides, YMCA, YWCA) 5. Religions welfare organization (Al-Falah Welfare Trust 6. Professionals: Doctors, Nurses, Hakims 7. Society of mental/ physical handicaps. (Dar-ul-Sukoon)

8. Social action group ROLE OF THE NURSE TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION


1. Educator/Encourager: Encourage the community to learn about and give more control on their

health matters
2. Communicator: He/ She remains in communication with doctor and higher authorities to minor

or any major disease spread in the community


3. Motivator: He/ She motivates the client for MCH antenatal and postnatal care, breastfeeding,

hygiene conditions, and improving family planning


4. Facilitator: He/ She provides health care to the family through health care team as well as involve

community people for their full participation.


5. Problem Solver: He/ She tries to solve minor problem on occasion such as first aid, health

education etc.

6. Change agent: Brings about modification and change in health practices of the people. 7. Planner: He/ She assists the communities in planning related to achievements of highest level of

wellness.
8. Advisor: Act as an advisor in the events of health related emergency. 9. Advocator: Speaks on behalf of the people for favorable health conditions through participation

of community and other groups.


10. Enabler: Nurses provide suitable access to information, training and appropriate skills that enable

people to get information, and make healthy choices.


11. Mediator: In the pursuit of health, nurses mediate between communities, government, health, non-

government and voluntary organization. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: An active process in which the community identifies its needs and work in partnership with health professionals to meet the need for improved health Levels of Community Participation:

Passive:

Recipients of program.

Active:Participate in program by contributing land, money and time etc.

Goals of community participation:


Creating a strong link between the community and health professionals Empower the community to take care of his own health.

Principles of community participation:


People have capacity to think and work together for a better quality of life. Knowledge, skills, responsibility and resources should be shared with community.

Action plan (Step by step)


1. Identify local health needs and problems through community 2. Build trust and friendship thorough home visits, neighborhood and community meetings 3. Establish objectives for partnership with the community in clear terms: SMART/ RUMBA. Which

help health care workers and community members for particular task Benefits of Community Participation:
1. Increase mobilization of resources and sustainability of program. 2. Empower people with knowledge, skills. and sense of responsibility and proper utilization of

resources.
3. Enhance dignity and self confidence 4. Help community to see that what they can do and reinforce confidence.

5. Community members become capable to take care and operate related equipment. It will make the

program sustainable.
6. Through community participation people become well aware about the health problem and ability

to decide by their own. 7. Creates involvement, participation and motivation.
