Works to install new street lighting columns in Nestons
town centre have got underway.
A total of 27 columns are being replaced throughout the
works, with the new lighting being in a traditional heritage-
style and designed to accommodate hanging baskets and
festive lighting.
The design of the columns and lanterns was chosen by
members of the Neston s106 steering Group, including
representatives from Neston Town Council, Neston
and District Chamber of Trade, ch64inc Ltd and Neston
Community and Youth Centre.
Costs for the 74,000 project have been met through
Cheshire West and Chester Councils street lighting budget,
with s106 funds used to enable a higher quality design in
keeping with the conservation area.
Executive Member for Prosperity, Councillor Herbert Manley,
said: The council has been working closely with stakeholders
and residents in Neston to put down on paper what the town
centre needs.
The result was the Neston Public realm Design Guide
published earlier this year, which highlights a number of
potential improvements, and the new street lighting columns
are just the frst action to be taken forward.
Local member, Cllr Andy Williams said This is the beginning
of what is hoped to be considerable improvements to Nestons
public realm over the next few years.
The lighting columns are in keeping with Nestons rich
heritage and will bring a noticeable improvement to the High
Street.

Fond farewells from
Neston air cadets
NESTON Air Cadets have said goodbye to
three people over the last month.
The cadets gathered at the Boathouse to say
goodbye to the vicar of Neston, the rev Neill
rob and his wife Marleen, and wished them
all the very best in retirement. The meal was
polished off with a speech from the squadron
Commanding Offcer, Flight Lieutenant Paul
Thelwell, RAF VR(T), and a presentation
of a picture of rev robbs last enrolment
evening and fowers for Marleen.
rev robb has served in the Neston parish
for many years, the fnal six of which was as 2375 (Neston) Squadrons Padre. The
staff, committee and cadets will miss his frequent visits and talks.
They said a sad farewell to one of their long standing
cadets, Cpl James kelly.
James leaves cadets after three years, embarking on the
next stage of his life, studying Geography at the University
of Bangor. He aims to eventually join the RAF as a
Cartographer.
James has fully embraced life in the cadets, taking part in
sport, adventure training, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and
most recently, a camp at RAF Rheindahlen in Germany.
He is also credited as being one of four cadets who
won the Wing Adventure Training Exercise (WATEX).
This entailed him and his team taking part in kayaking,
mountain-biking, orienteering, rock climbing and archery
competitions.
Lastly, Cpl Jonathan Barnett left to become
a student at Liverpool University where he is
studyingy anatomy. His time in cadets has been
varied, from annual camps at RAF Lossiemouth,
scotland and Aldergrove, Northern Ireland. He
has completed his bronze, silver and gold Duke of
Edinburgh Awards, been fying and gliding.
His fnal adventure was a sailing trip from Penrith
to Dublin. He helped crew a sailing ship along
with many other cadets, sailing across the irish
sea among dolphins in both smooth and choppy
waters.

Barnardos.

go on a huge walk into their local

Air cadets excel in
Wing get-together
The hard work and dedication
paid off last month, when air
cadets from 2375 Neston
squadron attended the
annual Merseyside Wing Field
Training Day. The cadets
won trophies for Adventure
Training, Media and Work
in the Community while
earning runners-up spots in
Best Turned out in Drill and
squadron sports. Individually,
Sgt Fields came in the top fve
best female cadets the Wing
and Sgt Daker was 3rd in the
Archery.

the play A Few good Men. Packed with sardonic
humour and moments of high tension and emo-
tion, this searing courtroom drama is a provoca-
tive and engaging meditation on the inevitable
corruption of power and the responsibility of
those who unquestioningly follow orders. Exactly
how do you draw the line between deciding guilt
and innocence?
A Few good Men was written by Aaron
Sorkin, creator of the television shows The
west wing and the film The Social network
and tells the story of two U.S. Marines who are
being court-martialed for the murder of a fellow
Marine.
Lt. daniel Kafee, an inexperienced
U.S. navy lawyer, reluctantly takes
their case and discovers his clients
strict devotion to the Marine Corps
code of honour and following of
orders may cost them their freedom.
Paul Kirkbright, the plays director,
comments this play is also a coming-
of-age story of a young lawyer emerg-
ing from the shadow of his successful
father to find his own voice as a
champion for justice and the pursuit
of truth.
while the play is well-known,

hit 1992 film version starring Tom

reduce the amount of heat that escapes through windows by a third during the winter and are also one
of the best blackout blinds on the market, as there are no stitching holes for light to penetrate through.
Then there are shutters which come into their own during the winter months providing privacy and
excellent energy-saving properties. As well as the traditional wooden ones, there is a new collection of
attractive vinyl shutters which are superb at keeping heat in.

offer a whole surgery of telephone consultations every morning. A member also mentioned our guaranteed
next day appointment system, which he felt, was unique to our practice. See below for further details.

Less is more for Woman of the Year slimmers
AFTER losing 14 stones between them and winning a local slimming competition,
the only thing thats big about Carys Furr, Helen Bradley & Charlotte Morgan is their
beaming smiles.
The ladies from Neston, lost weight with their local slimming World group in The royal
British Legion and their transformation hasnt gone unnoticed as they have just been
named the Neston groups Woman of the
Year 2012.
Helen (44) joined Slimming World after
becoming increasingly unhappy with her
weight. she says: I started to put on
weight after having my son Connor.
I tried lots of different diets but they
usually left me feeling hungry and
miserable. slimming World is completely
different, I never have to go hungry and
Im the happiest Ive been in years!
Helen added: I never dreamt I could
achieve so much. Ive gone from a size
20 to a 10 and its made such a huge
difference its changed my life. Ive got
so much more energy and I can do things

We would all like more space in our

NEsToNs Chat Noir Productions have
made an important flm, dealing with
some very disturbing issues.
New Brighton based charity The Lantern
Project was set up in 2003 to provide help
and support for survivors of sexual abuse.
In 2010 Chat Noir Productions Ltd. made
the 6 minute flm Theres Something I
Need to Tell You, explaining The Lantern
Projects work to deaf people and those
with hearing problems.
After the success of this flm, funded by
the Big Lottery, the charity commissioned
Chat Noir to develop a second more
ambitious flm.
Designed to give GPs, the Police and
social workers a better understanding
of the true damage childhood sexual
abuse causes, the flm was by far one of
the most challenging Chat Noir had ever
been commissioned to produce.
Working with the Lantern Project, Chat
Noir developed a script based on the
testimonies of survivors of childhood
sexual abuse. These men were then
flmed around New Brighton and
Birkenhead, although their stories were
voiced by local actors, Mike Lockley and
steve Lofthouse.
Using motion graphics and animation
with a voice-over performed by Paul
Carmichael, the flm details the
therapeutic counselling methods the
Lantern Project has developed during
its work with over 1500 survivors. Called
Unstructured Therapeutic Disclosure
(UTD), The Lantern Project will be
teaching other counsellors their methods,
using the flm as a key resource.
Nearly six months in development, the
flm has already been screened to child
abuse experts around the world and will
be used by the charity to raise the profle
of childhood sexual abuse with central
government.

Spotlight on boy racers
PoLICE are trying to tackle boy racers
who have been attracting complaints
from neighbours near the Clayhill Estate.
Young drivers have been gathering on
the Clayhill and revving their engines
with loud exhausts and then wheel
spinning and racing around the area.
l A petrol leaf blower/hedge cutter,
strimmer and chainsaw were stolen a
vehicle parked on Grasmere road.
l Chrome and rubber trims were stolen
from around the front and back windows
of a Ford Galaxy parked in Ringway
l Neston police are trying to trace the
driver of a red sports car who asked a
girl if she wanted a lift on raby Park
road. There was a similar incident
involving a red sports car on Liverpool
road. The driver in both incidents is
described as a black male aged about
30.

AT the September meeting Sarah Thursfeld gave a talk entitled Lady Burghs
Seamstress. Sarah is a very talented seamstress making replica clothing for use by
actors in plays and for people to use during historical re-enactments.
The President, Pauline Pollard reminded us of forthcoming events including visits to
the Athenaeum in Liverpool, and a local walk with a pub lunch. our Craft Group is
planning to meet in early october to discuss ideas and future projects, other interest
groups include reading group and Poetry, Prose and Plays.
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 2nd october, in st Michaels Church,
Marshlands Road, Little Neston, at 7.30pm when Glynn Parry will talk about Quiet

Neston Riverside WI
ITs been a busy summer for the girls of Neston riverside WI and they have not
let the inclement weather put them off. They have still enjoyed all the celebrations
of the year with a play for the jubilee written by members of the group, selling
cakes at the Neston Fair, an afternoon tea party, a trip around Cheshire with
lunch at Mrs Harveys old school House. They have even celebrated their 2nd
Birthday Party.
It may not have been sunshine all the way in Neston but that did not dampen the
spirits when the girls were entertained by Fatma an exotic belly dancer. Fatma
gave a talk on the origins of belly dancing and how it is still practised in many
cultures in the world today, starting with girls dancing together as we do in British
culture. The evening was a great success with many of the ladies taking part in
the experience themselves.

NESTON High School
celebrated 40 years of providing
comprehensive education at its
annual Presentation Evening.
Award-winning students from
KS3, KS4 and KS5 were presented
with a special medal to mark the
occasion. These were presented by
ex-students of the school, identifed
through its 40th anniversary project RU1OFR10000? which aims to trace
the ten thousand or so students who have passed through the school since
it became a comprehensive school in 1972. Further details of this can be

Speakers for the evening included the current Head Boy and Head Girl
(Harry Smith and Jessica Christy) who spoke with pride about the many
opportunities open to students both inside and outside the classroom;
Chairman of Governors, Reg Chrimes who outlined the history of the school
and how its comprehensive nature had increased the life chances for so
many and head teacher Stephen Dool who introduced a slideshow of the
achievements of past students.
Mr Dool said: This was a fantastic evening where we were able to celebrate
the history of comprehensive education at Neston High School and
demonstrate its success through the achievements of former students.
He introduced the fnal speaker for the evening, ex student Stephen
Thomson who having graduated from Oxford University is currently
undertaking a PhD in Astrophysics at
Cambridge University. Stephen
spoke with obvious pride
about his time at Neston and
in an inspirational speech
encouraged all students to
aim to be the very best
that they can be.
