least one major assault a month since the last American troops left in December. Al Qaeda's local wing, the Islamic State of Iraq, says it has begun a new offensive against mainly Shi'ite targets. Security experts say it has benefited from the conflict in Syria, which has given al-Qaeda the pretext to seek more money and arms from Sunni tribes, politicians and governments. Security had been tightened in Baghdad and other provinces after dozens of inmates, including convicted members of al Qaeda, fought their way out of a prison in the northern city of Tikrit on Friday using weapons officials said had been smuggled in during family visits. bomb and two roadside bombs blew up separately, killing a civilian and wounding six. The last major attacks occurred on September 9, in the capital when a series of bombs in mainly Shi'ite districts ended one of the bloodiest days of the year with more than 100 killed across the country. Violence in Iraq has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian fighting killed thousands of people, but Sunni Islamists are still seeking to undermine the Shi'ite-led government. The blast was followed minutes later by another parked car bomb as people gathered, killing three civilians and injuring 12 others, they added. Secondary bomb blasts targeting those coming to help the wounded are a common insurgent tactic. An Associated Press cameraman was knocked to the ground in the second explosion and an AP photographer was slightly injured. Elsewhere in the country, another suicide bomber drove a minibus into a security checkpoint in Kut, located 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. Three police officers were killed and five wounded, Maj. Gen. Hussein Abdul-Hadi Mahbob said. And in Iraq's north, another policeman was killed when security forces were trying to defuse a car bomb parked on the main highway between the cities of Kirkuk and Tuz Khormato, said Kirkuk police chief Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir. A second policeman was wounded in the blast, Qadir said. Kirkuk is about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

In mid-morning, another parked car bomb went off next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in the town of Madain, killing three Iraqis and injuring 11 others including seven Iranians, another police officer and health official said. Madain is a mainly Sunni area located 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Baghdad. In the town of Balad Ruz, 75 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a parked car bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen and injuring seven others, a police officer and health official said. And in the nearby town of Khan Bani Saad, 15 kilometers (nine miles) northeast of Baghdad, yet another parked car bomb exploded near a market and killed one civilian and injured nine others, they added. Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Baghdad, when their patrol hit a roadside bomb, another police officer and health official said. Six other people, including four civilians were wounded. Health officials in Taji, Tarmiyah and Baghdad confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information. Earlier this summer, the Iraqi wing of al-Qaida, also called the

Islamic State of Iraq, launched a campaign dubbed "Breaking the Walls," which aimed at retaking strongholds from which it was driven by the American military. At its peak, al-Qaida in Iraq brutalized its victims with publicized beheadings, suicide bombings and roadside bombs that targeted the Shiite government, the U.S. military and Iraqi civilians. In an attempt to goad Shiite militias to respond, Al-Qaida bombed the revered al-Askari Shiite shrine in Samarra in 2006 an attack that launched Iraq's descent into more than three years of sectarian fighting. But the Iraqi wing of al-Qaida was shunned by the worldwide terror network's central leadership, which chided it for killing civilians. The insurgency made a series of other missteps imposing overly strict Islamic discipline and alienating tribal leaders that undercut its support in Iraq's Sunni communities and helped lead to the widespread defection of fighters to groups allied with the U.S. As a result, the flow of funding, arms and fighters slowed to a trickle, and al-Qaida in Iraq has struggled to command much power. Violence has dropped since the BOMBS page 3

US Unemployment to Remain Elevated Under Present Presidential Policies Posted: September 29th, 2012 | Author: Morris Beschloss| Filed under: Economics While the pre-election confrontation reaches its crescendo on the eve of the October presidential/VP debate showdown, unemployment improvement optimists seem to expect a magic trigger mechanism to emit a post-election upward bump after the installation of the Presidential election winner. This illusion is based on the mistaken belief that the current wait and see hiring freeze will dissolve once U.S. President No. 45 is installed on January 20, 2013. An objective analysis of Americas structural Labor Department-reported 8.1% unemployment rate and a multidecade low labor force participation rate of 63.8% will not improve if current businesshostile government policies stay in place. The following major policies which will not change under a second Obama term

emphasize this rationale as follows: 1) The energy subsector, which is proceeding at an elevated intensity, will come under increasing fire from the Environmental Protection Agency, which is committed to the bankruptcy of coal companies. The increasing offshore dependence on, and ultimate elimination of oil through exorbitant prices, and even an eventual stricture on national gas, all of which are considered unacceptable fossil fuels, is on the chopping block. This stratagem is believed to be EPAs method of forcing the use of renewables, despite the fact that this segment (solar, wind, bio-mass, ethanol, etc.) have proven only useful as a supplement to fossil fuels. Nuclear, aside from expansion onsite, is dead in the water. 2) The permanent cancellation of the Trans-Canada XL oil pipeline will not only deprive the U.S. of additional energy conversion, up to 50,000 construction workers, and massive additional revenues from fossil fuel and its derivatives, but billions will be lost as an offset to an out of control debt and deficit. The war on coal is not only succeeding in the bankrupting of the nations coal mining and

exporting capability, but will continue to depress the thousands of well-paying jobs associated with an industry that has continued to represent major job opportunities until recently. The announcement by Alpha Natural to shut its coal mines (9.2% of its overall employment) eliminates thousands of mining positions with more attrition to come. Its ludicrous to contemplate that the Environmental Protection Agency is running amok in its attempt to crucify Americas energy capabilities. Another Obama Presidential term will only make such a destructive, jobkilling example worse. For future easy access to my blogs, please use the link below, and bookmark it to your desktop. Games Are A Difficult Investment Proposition, But Crowdfunding Could Change That

Those are the high note of ambition (such as businesses that investors believe following blue-ocean strategies or will transcend the vagaries of hitlean-startup thinking), but in driven economics. practise they tend to be terrified of Theyve overcome this problem risk. So the conventional wisdom i n t h e f i l m i n d u s t r y u s i n g holds that Europe is doomed to be mezzanine and convertible-debt

rather than venture financing. This involves essentially loaning money to the producer in exchange for the intellectual property rights, which are then bought back through earn-out clauses. Some people have thought to apply the same model to games, but it rarely works well. The thing is, the belief about games being hit-driven is somewhat misinformed. When we say hit-driven, we often mean a piece of content that grows hot very quickly, but also cools off and (hopefully) leads to a long tail of revenue. The music industry is the classic example of this with its charts and hit parades, one-hit wonders, Gangnam-style sensations and rapid turnaround. In music, the pressure is always on to generate new hits and to remain relevant. The games industry is similar to music and film in that hit games tend to spread quickly. Its also sometimes true that a hit game can tail off (such as Draw Something) if it proves to have no depth. However where games differ radically from both film and music is in their development and their fan relationships. Games are developed like software. Iteration and

experimentation are vital, as are fairly flexible delivery times (Blizzard is famous for its done when its done approach to making games). This does not sit well with the fixed production schedules and milestones that mezzanine financing schemes bring and usually results in bad games (hence defeating the whole point of financing them in the first place). However well-iterated games show much more staying power than the vast majority of films or music could ever hope to achieve. Great games spawn franchises, leading to increased sales for release after release. They commonly show multi-year growth patterns, whether at retail (Borderlands 2 is likely to sell far more than Borderlands) or online. Fans usually find a game type that they love, play the hell out of it, evangelise it and then buy the next one. Loyalty and continuity across multiple years (or even decades) is very important, and (if the game is great) that loyalty can potentially last forever. Thats why Grand Theft Auto can sell 15 million copies every couple of years, Call of Duty sells 20 million units every year, and World of Warcraft, whose salad

days are probably gone, retains around 9.1 million subscribers. Its why most of the geek world is patiently waiting for Half Life 3. Franchising can also work laterally. Nintendo uses a number of key characters like Mario to sell many types of games, for example, as does UK war-game company Games Workshop. Zynga has attempted something similar by appending the suffix Ville to many of its games (though whether that really works, who can say). In practise the smart money should be looking not to companies who have an idea for a game, nor those who simply have a distribution or technology platform (those are a dime a dozen these days). It should look for franchise potential. Likewise, those who develop games should be thinking whether the game they want to make can really extend into franchises. Only when those two mindsets line up does real value tend to be generated, but wrong-headed understanding from both sides still persists. Until (hopefully) now. Enter The Crowd GAMES page 9

GAMES
continued from page 7

In the games industry the whole idea of crowdfunding caught us with our pants down, and were still trying to understand what it means. We stare in disbelief at some of the amounts being raised, wondering aloud whether the whole thing is a massive bubble just waiting to be burst. For many of us it seems like a temporary madness that will pass before the industry gets back to the regular business of developers and publishers. For a few of us (myself included) its much more than that, though. The hype started with Tim Schafer and Double Fine generating over $3.4 million on a campaign looking for $400K. Following on from this initial success, a number of other longtime luminaries have done likewise, and this has not been limited only to gaming legends. The Ouya project, to create a lean console that could play app-style games, won just under $8.6 million through the same route. Similarly, real-time strategy game Planetary Annihilation pulled in $2.2 million. Crowdfunding has also helped many game makers at smaller scales, such as helping my friend Mike Bithell raise completion funds for his indie game Thomas Was Alone. However crowdfunding raises some questions. The first question is whether the

funds raised through crowdfunding indicate the size of the addressable market or merely a small part of it. So far the signs are that the latter is true. The Kickstarter-funded game FTL (which raised just over $200K) seems to be doing very well, for example. Then there is Minecraft, a game that was effectively crowdfunded by being sold at a very early alpha stage. According to Minecraft.net it has sold 7.5 million copies of the PC version alone, and the Xbox version has sold 3.6 million copies. The second question around crowdfunding is whether the whole thing is just a hype bubble waiting to pop. At Games Invest the key speaker this year was John Vaskis, head of the games vertical at Indiegogo. Vaskis talked about efforts being made to encourage more game projects. He imparted key information such as the value of a strong video, the importance of stretch goals (if you reach your target early, you need new targets to keep encouraging funding) and so on. He also revealed that the average investment by a fan in a project on Indiegogo is $79. All of this sounds very encouraging, but the reaction from the conference attendees was less optimistic. On a panel, my friend and fellow consultant Nicholas Lovell wondered

whether crowdfunding has reached the top of the Gartner Hype Cycle and is about to dive into the trough of disillusionment. However he also cited its power at small as well as large scales, specifically with reference to a book project by Zoya Street named Dreamcast Worlds. Many wondered just how many projects fail to gain funding, and also what would happen if a major scam was perpetrated through crowdfunding. The third question is around delivery. Those who make games know that the amounts being raised by some crowdfunding projects are actually on the small side. Tim Schafers $3.4 million may sound like a lot, but its actually a dwarf compared to the budgets of most console games. So what happens if the crowdfunded project turns out to not have enough money to finish a game? What if, 75 percent of the way through development, it transpires that the game is not very good? On the same panel, Alex Chapman (a leading games lawyer at Sheridans) suggested that while invested projects are built to make money and hopefully please the fans, crowdfunded games are meant to please fans, with profit being optional. This screams risk. Suspicion of the new is natural, of course. However I think

crowdfunding is a demonstration of what I call marketing stories. It shows how players are motivated by causes in which they believe (such as the idea that adventure games are not dead, or that indie consoles should be a real thing), and put their money where their mouths are. Marketing stories are increasingly the most important factor in determining success or failure in many industries (replacing older forms of marketing like advertising), or what Seth Godin calls tribalism. In a sense, crowdfundings real value is not the money that it generates, the success of what individual projects deliver, or whether it is currently overhyped. Those things help, but really what crowdfunding should be thought of is as the best market-research tool weve ever had. It gives us a way to look into the tribal minds of the players who care, the ones that are most likely to spread the word later by correlating not just what they have already bought, but what they intend to buy. Crowdfunding of games is a way to validate franchise potential (while maybe easing some of those Series A blues into the bargain). Some have already started to recognise this potential of user voices and tribes. Valve has recently deployed a service named Steam Greenlight, for example,

which asks users to vote on which games they would like to see published on Steam. I personally think that by tying this to votes rather than funding somewhat misses the point (because its easier to vote to say you would like something than to buy it, so the data may be skewed). Another project named Gambitious has launched in the UK. Its attempting to bring crowdfunding and equity investment together under one roof, which may or may not work. The point is that, rather than making games in isolation in the hope that they will hit, the tools have emerged to poll audience intent first and even turn that into a production budget. The exact form or site on which that happens is less relevant than the longer term trend of fans connecting to developers with real money and expressing the stories that they want to be a part of. And that is a long way from finding its true peak. My hope is that game investors everywhere realise that, through crowdfunding, their fears of risk can be mitigated. Then, finally, we might see a funding structure for games that actually makes sense.

Secure browsing on iOS in Safari or iCab Mobile

TJ Luoma (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)
Submitted at 9/30/2012 8:00:00 AM

A friend who values her privacy asked: "How do you delete Google search history on an iPhone?" There are two ways to do this, the first of which is to go to the Settings app, scroll down to 'Safari' and then click the 'Clear History' button as shown above. The second can be done from inside Safari itself. Tap the 'bookmarks' icon on the toolbar, then select History (note: if you don't see 'History' tap on whatever button is shown at the top-left until you see 'Bookmarks' at the top of the screen), then tap 'Clear.' This might be easier to understand visually, so here are some screenshots: Private Browsing in Safari Mobile Safari now has a 'Private Browsing' option to prevent history items, searches, cookies, and form data from being stored. Private Browsing is great for short web browsing sessions, but what if you want to be able to keep your history and cookies and bookmarks but not allow anyone who uses your iPhone or iPad to be able to access them? You can't do that with Safari, but you can do it with iCab. iCab

Mobile: Everything Safari does, and much more iCab Mobile(AKA iCab) is a US$1.99 app that continues to be my browser of choice on my iPad and iPhone. I reviewed iCab last year, but let me focus on some of iCab's privacy features here. iCab offers Private Browsing, of course, but it also offers many more privacy controls than Safari, such as the ability to delete history, cookies, saved form data, HTTP Auth credentials, databases, and local storage. You can also set it to automatically delete history, cookies, databases, and/or local storage when quitting the app. As if that wasn't enough, you can password protect the entire application, so anyone else who launches the app is unable to see your bookmarks, history, or anything else. Once password protected, it's possible to enable a 'Guest Mode' to let someone use iCab but still keep your information protected. In my opinion, iCab is also better at everything else you use a browser for. iCab sync bookmarks, filters, search engines, and/or settings using iCloud. It lets you change the Browser ID (User Agent) which can be handy for sites that

restrict access to certain kinds of browsers or automatically redirect mobile browsers to a strippeddown version of the site. You can download files right to iCab, and then either store them in iCab or open them in other apps. You can even upload those files to Dropbox. Images can be saved from websites directly to Dropbox.

The only downside to using iCab is that Apple does not allow any browser except Safari to be set as the default browser, so any web links clicked in other applications like Mail will continue to open in Safari. In practice that doesn't bother me too much, because Safari is a very good mobile browser. If I want to open a page from Safari in iCab, I can do one

of two things: I can tap on the URL and change the "http://" or "https://" to "web://" or "webs://" - which opens the current page in iCab -- or I can install the Open in iCab bookmark. iCab Mobile also supports xcallback-url which helps iCab interact with other iOS applications. If you don't know what x-callback-url is, don't worry about it, but if you do know what it is, you'll be glad to know iCab supports it. To some people, spending two bucks on a browser when Safari is free sounds like wasting money. To me, spending two bucks for a much better browser is a complete bargain. iCab is the 3rd-party app that I use most often on my iOS devices, and it continues to be improved at a much faster rate than Safari. China's Great Wall Of Suds: Chemical Spill Results In 50 Foot Foam Tsunami
Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
Submitted at 9/30/2012 9:29:46 AM

This is just the second time in three days that China's province of Guangdong is being discussed on Zero Hedge. On Thursday we wrote that the mega city of Dongguang, once Guangdong richest, is now on the verge of bankruptcy as China's hard landing begins to take its toll. Today, we learn that instead of the rivers running red once all hell breaks loose in China, the color will be soapy white. Specifically, following a chemical spill in Xintang, in the provine of Guandong, the result was a 50 foot tsunami of foam which was swept down a river by heavy rainfall, causing widespread panic and evacuations. It also caused the following brilliant explanation from a Chinese spokesman: "People are right to be cautious but it is harmless. It made very large bubbles when it went over a waterfall, but apart from one or two dead fish, it is harmless." We

can't wait to hear Chinese justifications of mushroom clouds: " aside from one or two billion dead people, they give you a healthy green afterglow"? More: This wall of foam sparked widespread panic among locals as it rushed along a river in southern China. The mass of soapy suds

blanketed the water in Xintang, in China's Guangdong province, leading to evacuations along the banks of the river. But officials have now said the only threat posed by the foam thought to have been caused by chemicals washed into the river was the possibility of 'one or two dead fish' lurking in the bubbles. The bizarre scene is thought to

have been caused after heavy rainfall washed a non-toxic chemical deodorant from a household rubbish tip into the river. The bubbles were created when the chemical was swept over a waterfall, officials said. A spokesman said: 'People are right to be cautious but it is harmless. It made very large

bubbles when it went over a waterfall, but apart from one or two dead fish, it is harmless.' The North is a powder keg of rebellion, waiting for the merest spark to explode. What's that? This writeup is treason? Well then forget everything I said, it would be so embarrassing to go through a trial like that.

Elizabeth Warren. She was hired by Harvard law school because she lied about her ethnicity to gain affirmative action benefits, exaggerated her scholarship which was shoddy, practiced law for years in Massachusetts out of her law school office without being a member of that state's bar -- and possibly at the time a member of no bar at all. She gummed on before the crowd about working for the middle class hiding from the audience that she had made hundreds of thousands of dollars representing big corporations in disputes against steel workers and asbestos victims among others. This week, Professor William Jacobson exposed all of that. But she was hardly the only world class mythomaniac from Harvard law school on the podium at that Convention, the theme of which was Obama the bold slayer of Bin Laden and destroyer of Al Qaeda, the experienced and aggressive counter terrorist expert. After all, his domestic policies, are so bad they were hardly anything about which to spike the ball so the brain trust picked international anti-terrorist hero theme. If you've been too busy to keep track of the lies about the origin and perpetrators of the tragedy in Libya, Iowahawk has once again condensed this to its essence: "Fast & Furious, Benghazi edition?" Let's review the sad history of an Obama foreign policy initiative which resulted in the murder of

our Ambassador, and three other Americans in an action which suggests that (reminiscent of Fast & Furious) the Administration let loose countless dangerous weapons , cannot trace them and has unloosed even more destruction -- including against the U.S. -- in this highly unstable region. March 2012 According to Mark Hosenball of Reuters, sometime in that month, Obama decided to aid the rebels in ousting Gaddafi, a man who was at the time seemingly much subdued after we invaded Iraq and no longer creating the trouble in the region he'd been infamous for. President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday. Obama signed the order, known as a presidential "finding", within the last two or three weeks, according to government sources familiar with the matter. Such findings are a principal form of presidential directive used to authorize secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency. This is a necessary legal step before such action can take place but does not mean that it will. As is common practice for this and all administrations, I am not going to comment on intelligence matters," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement. "I will reiterate what the president said yesterday -- no decision has

been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any group in Libya." Congress was not consulted. Congress did not authorize this. The entire decision and responsibility is Obama's. While it may have appeared that we were only providing air support to the rebels, Obama announced at the time he had not ruled out supplying the rebels with arms, and from the nature of the attack on our consulate and a nearby "farm" in Benghazi we can assume that we, in fact, provided them. I can think of no other reason why we had so many former Seals and outside contractors in these locations except that we were trying unsuccessfully to retrieve these arms before they fell in the hands of Al Qaeda. And this development was as Hosenball reported something of great concern to people with a great deal more experience and historic knowledge than Obama: Members of Congress have expressed anxiety about U.S. government activities in Libya. Some have recalled that weapons provided by the U.S. and Saudis to mujahedeen fighting Soviet occupation forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s later ended up in the hands of anti-American militants. There are fears that the same thing could happen in Libya unless the U.S. is sure who it is dealing with. The chairman of the House intelligence committee, Rep. Mike Rogers, said on Wednesday he opposed supplying

arms to the Libyan rebels fighting Gaddafi "at this time." "We need to understand more about the opposition before I would support passing out guns and advanced weapons to them," Rogers said in a statement. A Little song, A Little dance, A little Seltzer Down Your Pants It was reasonably obvious from the outset -- especially considering the words of the Libyan government and the reports on the ground -- that the attacks on the consulate and at a nearby " farm" were not spontaneous outbursts occasioned by fury at a video which was critical of Muhammad, "Innocence of Muslims." At the Daily Beast, Eli Lake reported it was known within 24 hours of the incident that al Qaeda affiliates were behind the well-supplied and orchestrated attacks, but the Administration persisted for a week using various spokespersons, especially Susan Rice, Jay Carney and Secretary of State Clinton, to lie and suggest that was the cause of the murder of the Ambassador and three others. Charles Krauthammer is the go to guy on why such an obviously juvenile effort to deflect blame onto a stupid video (probably few people have seen) was made: This was clearly deception on part of the administration in sending Susan Rice to say this was a spontaneous demonstration, when as you reported, it was known inside the administration within a day that it was not. It was

a terror attack. So why did they deceive? It's obvious. Because the attack took place five days after the Democrats had spent a week in Charlotte touting, spiking the football on Osama. And essentially, since it's the only foreign policy achievement of the four years they repeated it over and over again, the great triumph over al-Qaeda. Well, within a week, al-Qaeda sacks a U.S. embassy, kills an ambassador and the administration did not want to admit it so it spent a week deceiving Americans to think it's about demonstration, it's about a film, thinking, I think correctly that if it strung it out long enough the media would let it slide and now that it becomes it's obvious and true, nobody will care, I guarantee you. This is not a headline in the mainstream media. John Nolte at Breitbart shared that point of view: The false White House narrative blaming the murders on a protest gone bad over a YouTube video never really passed the smell test. But Obama maintained that illusion straight through to his speech before the United Nations two days ago, even as reports surfaced that our government knew al-Qaeda was behind the attack within 24 hours. Apparently, this has become too much to sweep under the rug for some of the mainstream press and Democrats. The behavior of Obama and Secretary of State Clinton over ROAD page 18

the past 14 days is a scandal of the highest order. Lies, cover ups, and neglect for security of American intelligence and personnel that borders on criminal. I've been skeptical that the same media, that early on conspired in this cover up by intentionally pouring all of its focus and fire on Mitt Romney's criticism of the Cairo Embassy apology, would go near this before the election. But the sins are so great and glaring, it doesn't look as though ignoring it will be possible for another 40 days. After lying the Administration is now refusing to respond to inquiries based on a phony claim that the matter is "under investigation," an investigation that is nonexistent. (See video2 here.) And Now a Little Two Step Even though the make believe scenario has fallen apart, Obama still publicly continues to act as if it were true. His Attorney general got involved and the film maker was widely photographed being hustled off (for questioning) by the Los Angeles police department and was just jailed on a pretense -- a probation violation. The "offense" seems at best a technical violation and at worst a signal to the Middle Eastern fanatics that while we say we can't do anything to stop them from being offended because the First Amendment forecloses such

action, we really can and will punish those who offend them, The same message was made more explicit in Obama's silly and groveling statement before the UN: " The Future Must Not Belong To Those Who Slander the Prophet of Islam." The use of the word "Prophet" in this context is bizarre. Do we refer to "Lord Jesus" or "Prophet Moses" in news accounts and secular speech? The suggestion that criticism of Islam is the equivalent of slander (a justiciable offense) and must result in the defeat of the speaker is nonsensical. The entire statement indicates to me the President is appeasing our attackers, bowing to the jihadis as earlier he touched the ground before the Saudi King. The entire claim that we must not give religious offense, moreover, is odd coming from a President who sees nothing wrong with "piss Christ" exhibits in publicly financed museums and whose Secretary of State publicly indicated she thought a play mocking Mormons was terrifically funny. The pretense that Islam is entitled to some special protection because otherwise the world will suffer has even spread to NYC where after an MSNBC commenter was arrested for spray painting a pro-Israel poster the transit authority decided to remove those posters to avoid giving further offense to people

like the defacer! To recap, this was an armed assault, not a spontaneous demonstration. The weapons used against us were likely in the hands of Al Qaeda because our President on his own put them there, and we are being denied our free speech rights as part of an elaborate ruse to keep the press from reporting the scandal and the voters from learning before the election what really went down. Other Implications My friend Matt Holtzmann adds a coda, a description of the current state of play as a result of this series of administration blunders: Susan Rice, our ambassador to the U.N., decided to have lunch with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton yesterday instead of attending Israeli PM Netanyahu's speech. Diplomatically this was the equivalent of flipping the bird. I believe this sends as clear a message as possible of the Administration's intentions in the Middle East. That Mohammed Morsi released Mostafa Hamza, a leader of The Islamic Group, who was responsible for the Luxor temple bombing in 1997, is indicative of a new phase in the global war on terror. In that attack, which killed 58 foreign tourists, the terrorists locked the gates of the temple grounds and for over 30 minutes raped, terrorized, and murdered

almost everyone within the grounds. From the survivors' descriptions it was an orgy of violence. It was the worst terrorist attack in Egyptian history. Morsi is also pressing for the release of the Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the "Blind Sheikh," who was behind the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and who is at the center of an extradition battle in the U.K. trying to evade imprisonment in the United States. With what we have just learned about the Administration's prevarications regarding the nature of the assassination of Ambassador Stevens in Libya, the refusal to maintain some form of common front with our greatest ally in the region should ring alarm bells regarding our commitments and obligations to allies in the region. Should Iran advance its agenda there is a very high probability that not only Israel, but the Gulf States will also go nuclear. Acupuncture Confirmed Helpful for Chronic Pain

Dr. Mercola (Articles)
Submitted at 9/29/2012 12:00:00 AM

By Dr. Mercola Chronic pain is an exceedingly common condition impacting an estimated 76.5 million Americans, one-third of whom describe their pain as severe and "disabling." When it comes to treating ailments such as chronic pain, I definitely prefer non-toxic options to modern medicine's poor excuses for "cures." One such option is acupuncture, which can be an effective option for a number of health problems, but pain in particular. In a recent analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 1 researchers concluded that acupuncture has a definite effect in reducing chronic pain, such as back pain and headaches more so than standard pain treatment. Real acupuncture also produced slightly better results than using sham needles, which suggests the benefits of needling are due to more than the placebo effect. According to Time magazine: 2 "The findings counter those of the last large study on the subject, which found that the needle technique was no better than a fake acupuncture treatment using random pricking with toothpicks in reducing people's pain. But Vickers says his meta-

analysis of the data, in which researchers reviewed 29 previous studies involving 17,922 participants, does a few things the previous studies did not. For one, he and his colleagues began by looking at only the most rigorous trials involving acupuncture and pain relief those that directly compared acupuncture treatment with some type of sham needle therapy in which needles were either inserted only superficially or placed in locations that are not known by acupuncture standards to be key treatment points in the body. The authors of the analysis contacted each of the researchers on the previous studies to discuss with them how they separated the two treatment groups. By limiting their review to the most robust studies published, the authors could assess with more confidence acupuncture's true effect on participants' reports of pain before and after treatment." Clear and Robust Effects of Acupuncture The researchers also went the extra mile by retrieving the raw data on self-reported pain. By standardizing the various study participants' responses, they were able to more accurately assess and compare them as a whole. The team discovered a "clear and robust" effect of acupuncture in

Chinese medicine, contrary to Western allopathic medicine, does not treat symptoms, but rather seeks to find the origin of the imbalance that produced the symptoms in the first place. Another major difference is that acupuncture, which is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is remarkably safe with few, if any, negative side effects, so it certainly doesn't hurt to try. Traditionally, acupuncture is used to treat all kinds of health problems. In many Asian cultures, you see an acupuncturist in the same way you'd see a primary care physician here in the West, and in some US states acupuncturists are in fact considered primary health care physicians. Still, many Westerners have been slow to grasp this type of holistic view, where your body is perceived as being perfectly capable of selfcorrection and healing without drug intervention. Scientists are still at a loss to explain why acupuncture works, but for those who get relief or healing, the mechanics may not be of great importance. Other Alternative ACUPUNCTURE page 21

Pain Treatments Besides acupuncture, there are a number of treatment modalities that can help ease pain, such as: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): Few people want to be told that their pain is psychological or emotional in origin, but there's quite a bit of evidence that backs this up. Underlying emotional issues and unresolved trauma can have a massive influence on your health, particularly as it relates to physical pain. According to Dr. John Sarno, a psychiatrist who uses mind-body techniques to treat patients with severe low back pain, EFT has a greater than 80 percent success rate Chiropractic adjustments: According to a recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine 5 and funded by the National Institutes of Health, patients with neck pain who used a chiropractor and/or exercise were more than twice as likely to be pain free in 12 weeks compared to those who took medication Massage: Massage releases endorphins, which help induce relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce levels of stress chemicals such as cortisol and noradrenaline reversing the damaging effects of stress by slowing heart rate, respiration and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure. It

is a particularly effective therapy for stress-related tension, which experts believe accounts for as much as 80 to 90 percent of disease Neuro-Structural Integration Technique (NST): NST is a gentle, non-invasive technique that stimulates your body's reflexes, which can provide relief for back pain. Simple movements are done across muscles, nerves and connective tissue, which helps your neuromuscular system to reset all related tension levels, promoting natural healing. The results can be both profound and lasting, and are usually apparent within two or three sessions.

Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or "Indian frankincense," this herb contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which have been prized for thousands of years. This is one of my personal favorites as I have seen it work well with many rheumatoid arthritis patients. Bromelain: This proteindigesting enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural antiinflammatory. It can be taken in

supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple may also be helpful. Keep in mind that most of the bromelain is found within the core of the pineapple, so consider leaving a little of the pulpy core intact when you consume the fruit. Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter, acts as a "joint lubricant" and an anti-inflammatory. I have used a topical preparation for myself to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild annoying carpal tunnel syndrome that pops up when I type too much on non-ergonomic keyboards. Evening Primrose, Black Currant and Borage Oils: These contain the fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain. Cayenne Cream: Also called capsaicin cream, this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting the body's supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmit pain signals to your brain.

David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Chart of the Week: Obamacares Barrage of Tax Hikes Coming in 2013

Rob Bluey (The Foundry: Conservative Policy News Blog from The Heritage Foundation)

Via Washington Post: During the Vietnam War, American soldiers shipped out armed with government-issued guides to the distant land and the mysterious people. In Afghanistan, the U.S. military has tried training sessions, embedded cultural advisers, recommended reading lists and even a video game designed to school the troops in local custom. But 11 years into the war, NATO troops and Afghan soldiers are still beset by a dangerous lack of cultural awareness, officials say, contributing to a string of insider attacks that have threatened to undermine the military partnership. So the Afghan army is trying

something new: a guide to the strange ways of the American soldier. The goal is to convince Afghan troops that when their Western counterparts do something deeply insulting, its likely a product of cultural ignorance and not worthy of revenge. . . Weve been at war for eleven years, and they are just getting around to creating this? Younger Emelianenko brother not disappointed with Fedors decision to retire

RT (News RSS : Today)
Submitted at 9/30/2012 8:45:02 AM

The M-1 Challenge MMA tournament hits the Russian capital on Sunday night, and there is a very familiar name topping the bill Fedor Emelianenkos younger brother Aleksandr, who spoke with RT about his next bout, and a few other things. Fedor retired, but the Emelianenko name fights on! Though the arguably greatest mixed martial artist of all time left the sport in June, his younger brother Aleksandr is still in the game. Both earned fame during the heyday of the PRIDE fighting championships in Japan in the

early 2000s the world's biggest MMA competition at the time. I'm not disappointed with Fedor's decision to leave at all. Of course, fans would love him to keep on fighting, because he's the best, Aleksandr says. Everybody enjoyed watching him fight, seeing his unique style, proving his outstanding skills over and over again, he said. That's why his retirement was just slightly disappointing. But he's not a machine. He realized it was time to leave and devote himself to other things. And I'm glad for him. Fedor's legacy is near untouchable. The 'Last Emperor' was undefeated for a decade,

while Aleksandr's career has been all about ups and downs. He earned his record of 20 wins through sheer aggression and no end of class, and handled five defeats without fear or reproach. One of Aleksandr's most devastating losses came in November of last year, when he was knocked out by his fellow countryman Magomed Malikov just 20 seconds into the bout. Still, he recovered with aplomb and went on to claim three wins in a row. On Sunday, the 31-year-old is set to face Latvia's Konstantin Glukhov in the main event of the M-1 Challenge tournament in Moscow.

He will be there to give his all and win. I respect him as a fighter. He is tall, he is good at both punching and kicking, although I've also seen him take his opponents to the ground. And I must be ready for that, too. However, he's first and foremost a very good striker, Aleksandr explained. Glukhov also won't make the mistake of underestimating his opponent:I consider Aleksandr Emelyanenko a very strong and experienced opponent. I'm preparing myself for a very tough clash. I wish him all the best. I want to be involved in a spectacular fight. I hope the crowd will enjoy it, he says.

There's more than just crowd appreciation at stake for Aleksandr Emelianenko. A win could mean his road to redemption is almost complete; a loss could send him right back to square one. from Huffington Post, thats the greatest fail imaginable. Its like Castros Cuba being chastised by the old Soviet Union. Conservative sites from Twitchy.com to Newsbusters were having a field day with Scarborough. The Morning Joe host is already viewed by many on the right as a RINO (Republican in Name Only) in the mold of "conservative" newspaper columnists Kathleen Parker and David Brooks, who make their career bashing conservatives. Conservatives again had good reason to mock him. Twitchy was one of those leading the charge, saying that MSNBC ran a clip that tried to paint a false narrative. But Scarborough wouldnt give up. On Twitter he made a series of statements standing by his original comments. Because, of course, Joe is never wrong. The fake controversy over the Ryan chants is a joke. Romney said What a guy!" The crowd chanted Ryan! and then Mitt jokes Romney/Ryan! he wrote, in the face of all evidence. Scarborough vowed to have the tape linked this weekend and told viewers you watch and be the judge. As of this writing it

was not featured prominently on either the MSNBC site or his own personal site. We will also play the CSPAN tape on Monday. Going to be fun, he promised. This is far from the first time MSNBC has been caught playing games with video. Back in June, Andrea Mitchell ran a piece of Romney speaking about shopping at Wawa which was edited to make him look foolish. In another incident, MSNBC misrepresented a Herman Cain video where he quoted Ben Franklin. Again the goal was to make him look foolish. MSNBC comes by its bogus video skills like a misbehaving child of a bad parent. Parent NBC, in this case, famously doctored Trayvon Martin 911 call audio to falsely depict George Zimmerman as racist. They later apologized and staffers were fired, but long after the damage had been done. Perhaps Morning Joe needs a bigger jolt of caffeine in the morning before it does its obligatory attack on conservatives, Republicans and anyone else Joes lefty paymasters oppose.
