News from National PHCC

Allaying Consumer Fears About Toilet-To-Tap Water. Plumbing and HVACR contractors know that our drinking water supply has been around the block a few times, from steams to treatment plants to toilets. A recent article from Fastcompany, however, reminds us that as water conservation becomes more crucial, the increasing prevalence of treated wastewater could present a psychological barrier for the general population. Water resource advocate Linda McPherson emphasizes that the history of where water has been has nothing to do with the quality of the water. How have you explained this concept to customers? Tell us at communications@naphcc.org. Bill Gates Sanitation Campaign is Flush with Innovation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hosted the Reinvent the Toilet Fair in Seattle last week in an effort to counter global sanitation crises and illness. The contest challenged inventors to come up with a toilet that operated without running water, electricity or a septic system, variables that often prove impractical or nonexistent in less-developed areas of the world. Professor Michael Hoffman from the California Institute of Technology won the contest (and $100,000) with a solar powered design that also generates gas and electricity.

Ideas are powerful things; they are not diminished by sharing.

Words + Action + Time = ? This is a topic I have debated for months to present. It is a more subtle focus than you usually expect from The Coach; but it is one I am compelled to deliver. The formula is simple: Words + actions + time = the quality of your relationships. I will address this in the business context in a moment; but permit me this brief aside Over the decades I have served many clients who also became friends. A few have succumbed to cancer. In our time together, not a single one wished they could have more time for their work. They all wished they could be granted more time with their loved ones. Perhaps there is a message here for us all. Owners, leaders, managers and supervisors need to understand this formula. Have you heard this one? If you talk the talk, you must walk the walk. Folks in these positions too often undermine everything they are trying to accomplish by forgetting this. Your words and actions must be consistent and congruent. When not done, serious issues are created in any organization. What folks at the top do and say are watched very, very closely. How does time fit in? Congruent and consistent words and actions are the basis for sound relationships. And believe me, a sound relationship of trust and respect are essential to be successful. Have you ever told someone they are important, yet never had the time for them. The giving of time is the glue for solid relationships.

The biggest complaint I have heard for 30 years is that the folks at the top dont have the time to listen to their teammates any longer. Some team members havent seen the boss in the field for years. If you dont have the time for them; they feel unimportant. You know what happens when team members feel unimportant, dont you? Rarely do I conduct a workshop for field or service personnel and have the boss stop by. You tell them training is important though, correct? We get so caught up in all the crises; we forget our business is about people. These same factors apply to your clients and suppliers. Have you taken the time to stop by their offices lately? One of the easiest methods to get more work is to stop by your clients office just because you can; not to beg for work. There are so many layers to this topic; one of great depth. I hope I have attracted your attention with this. And remember The Coach does not succeed until you do. The Phoenix Leadership Institute, Inc. P. O.
