2012 SOCIETY OF SAINT JAMES ~ HONOREE ~ PHIL BARONE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FORMER STATE DEPUTY & MEMBER OF THE EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF KNIGHTS OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE
On Monday, September 10th of this year, one of our many dedicated parishioners, Mr. Phil Barone was honored at the Awards Banquet of the Society of Saint James. We wish to include here a summation of one of the tributes made for Phil.

One Path of a Catholic Layman

The Catholic Faith is the guiding principle for living our lives. If we are to continue as the proud champions of our faith in working to make this world a better place for ALL to live, then we must band together as ONE FAMILY UNDER GOD. This is Phil Barones mandate to his fellow Knights. The Joliet Diocese is fortunate to have the enthusiasm and easy confidence of a relocated Easterner to help spread the Gospel according to the code of the Knights of Columbus. Phil Barone and his wife, Alice, appeared on the Illinois scene in 1975, thanks to a physical injury that placed him on a disability leave. Phil Barones early life prepared him well for the responsibilities of State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus. Phil was State Deputy for a two year term. It is the highest and most responsible position in the state. In Illinois, the State Deputy is the head of over 430 councils including 73,000 knights. His passage through virtually all positions involved Phil in the Knights many works of charity. For three years, as Charities Director he hit all fund-raising goals. We all are familiar with the Knights annual traffic-corner Tootsie Roll sales. But, their benevolence extends to many more charitable activities. For instance, few are aware that the Knights provided $10,000 seed money to Eunice Shriver and Alderman Ed Burkes wife, Anne McGlone, to launch the Special Olympics for persons with disabilities. From its modest beginnings in Soldier Field in 1968, it has become an internaPage 2 Page 2

tional event involving more than 3.7 million athletes in 170 countries. And, in the process Phil Barone has been an active participant as coach for baseball and basketball, as well as umpire and referee at the games. The High School Association also has Phils services as a basketball referee. The Knights focus their charitable activities on four areas. The top priority is supporting the Newman Campus Ministry. They also support Mental Retardation Learning Disabilities (MR/LD) Charitable Assistance and Vocations. Funds are distributed from their charitable umbrella: Illinois Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., 501(c)3. Phil has had an active role in all of them. Phil was born in New York and educated in secondary Catholic Schools including Cardinal Hays High School. He attended Bernard Baruch College out East and did management studies at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. Phil and his dear wife, Alice, have four children and nine grandchildren. A position with AT&T to run their Rand computer system brought Phil to Illinois. Instead of a desk-bound position, he decided to be an out-of-doors tech, climbing telephone poles and descending into utility pits. This move to Illinois proved to be fortuitous for it is here that Phil met and married his beloved Alice. The Barone family moved around in Illinois -- Oswego, Downers Grove, Yorkville, Warrenville, West Chicago and finally, to our benefit here at St. Johns, to Winfield. In each community, Phil was active in the Catholic parishes handling everything from parish finances to servicing computer systems and repairing plumbing (look up in the sky: Its a bird! Its a plane! No its super Knight!!!) At St. Mary Gostyn Parish in Downers Grove, Alice served as head of religious education. She volunteers with different groups in St. Johns and Phil is a Reader at Mass and has served on the Parish Council and Finance Committee. They both participated in the building of your New Church and the Gym. Phil is also on the Board of the Upper Room Crisis Hotline, a counseling service for clergy who live alone or those who simply need to talk to someone about their concerns. He serves on the Board of Special Camps for Special Citizens -- a weekly camping trip for underprivileged youth. Both Phil and Alice are also active in the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. In fact, Phil is very appreciative of Alices active participation in all his activities and the support she provides.

As a proud champion of our faith, Phil is surely one of Christs Heroes. We appreciate all you do for us, Phil, and we salute you.

A CHRISTMAS INFANT
Thank you! In last weeks bulletin, a request went out for donations for a wonderful, life sized Infant Jesus that we could have carved in Italy, a splendid addition to our church for Christmas. And, we have a donor. A parishioner came forward with a donation for the carving. Thank you, thank you! Any other monies donated will go toward glass doors to put between the old chapel and the entrance into the new church.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE Wednesday, September 26 through Sunday, November 4, 2012

Prayer, Fasting, and Vigil to change a heart and to save a heart The purpose of 40 DAYS FOR LIFE is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity and prayer, fasting, and peaceful witness to seek Gods favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life and repentance and healing for all who have been involved in abortion. Our parish will participate in this prayer campaign in two ways: PRAYER AND FASTING. Consider attending an extra Mass each week for this intention, or pray a Rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy each day, or stop in the Chapel after school or work for a quiet time of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament or during Adoration on Tuesdays beginning at 8:00 a.m. to Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. Pray during these 40 days . . . at church, at home, in the car . . .wherever you are. Make a commitment to fast from a certain food, TV, alcohol,
or anything else, to strengthen your prayer and support for the unborn.

PRAYERFUL VIGIL. You are invited to pray with fellow parishioners and those from surrounding churches and tens of thousands nationwide and across seven countries in this vigil. We will join in prayer at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic at 3051 E. New York Street, Aurora, during the 40 DAYS. Consider inviting friends and family, your small Christian community, or your parish ministry organization to adopt an hour to pray together outside the clinic. St. John the Baptist Parish prayer vigil commitment at the clinic is for two hours each Friday during the 40 DAYS, on Sept. 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26 and Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon and from 12 Noon to 1 p.m. Also on Monday, October 15, from 6:00 p.m.7:00 p.m., join fellow parishioners and Fr. Thomas who will lead us in an hour of prayer outside the clinic as part of the 40 DAYS. Stop by the tables in the Narthex today after Mass to sign up and to pick up a directions sheet or call parish coordinators Joe and Rita Grabowski at 630-665-9554 with your questions and for directions. Parking is available in the lot just east of the Dominicks store lot. Chairs and prayer aids will be available. YOUR PRAYER AND PRESENCE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

This information will dramatically improve your understanding of our faith tradition. In School Hall Grief and Faith Found at the End of Life (October 18)- Understanding how to grieve in times of tragedy is one of the most important healing lessons we can learn, yet in our culture it is seldom taught. Dear Parish Members: Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. Through our arrangement with the J.S. Paluch Company, the parish does not pay for the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers - many of whom are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. During these difficult economic times, I urge you to support our advertisers with your patronage. Tell the business owner that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin. This is one small way we can work within our own community to weather these challenging times. A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish. Sincerely, Fr. Tom Cargo
