Lange Gateway Hotel Cultural Area Residential Area Island East Corridor N Apartment Area Newton Hotel Fortress Hill is a typical Hong Kong Site. With coastal space using as the Commerical area and extending up to the mountain side with school, cultural space and residential space. An unique Axis is identifed in the Site such that this site linked different cultural area, School, Hotel, MTR Station and Commercial Offce. It is potentially possible to build a new Axis for Hong Kong to activate the whole district and create an unique attraction to Hong Kong. The site, which is at the head of this axis become very important to this Axis as it is opened to the harbour and can act as a lamp post of the Axis. New Axis Of Hong Kong Site Analysis Site: Fortress Hill, Hong Kong TERRACE BLOCK LEVEL + 18.00 + 9.00 PODIUM LEVEL + 3.00 GROUND LEVEL + 0.00 GARDEN LEVEL + 0.00 GARDEN LEVEL Barbican in London, acting as one of the major rebuilt project after war. Through years and years of trial and investigation, a new and unique way of building a residential community were introduced. In this district, different levels are introduced into the building, both in the lattitude and also public and private layers. Art theatre, School, Public Garden are introduced in this large residential planing with towers, Garden Flat, Maisonettes. Barbican is the pioneer of mixed programming and also introduced a new way to activate the residential community. Mixed-Use Community Case Study - Residential Project Case: Cromwell Tower, Barbican, London In Hong Kong, Housing Estate are always built with Podium Tower, which refers to grouping the Public programme such as communal space and shopping malls at the lowest level and the housing units are grouped as the tower. Such Confgurations made a successful mixed use Housing typology. But this confguration has certain assumption that can be challenged. It assumes that all the Residents requires more privacy than interaction such that the Housing Units should be far from the public programme. This project tries to suggest a new typology of housing, which is assuming people are willing to be lived within the public space to maintain high interaction with public. To create such typology, STREET, which is thought to be the real public space in Hong Kong, is used to organize the public programme and Housing and interweave up to the top of the Tower. The Streets interweaving with the building will intercross within the three towers and connecting to the local circulation up to the upper Fortress Hill. Weaving the Street Mixed-Use Houseing Design Site: Fortress Hill, Hong Kong Knots are splited to form space By offsetting the curve, surface is formed and was used to organise space At the void of the circulation, two structural cores are put and acted as the vertical circulation. More Structural Shear Walls are added to the knot to help the support. By extruding the communal part downward, four housing units are formed. By Deforming the shape using the device, different angle of view is generated. and the space is reorganised. Three Spiral Towers are placed at the two sides of the tower. The Tower is deformed to create different view for the apartment. The attraction is placed along the main spiral. the bridge provides the interlinkage between each other. Traditional Podium Tower Form Weaving the public space along the tower so as to increase intereaction. To Prevent monotonus spatial experience, knots methodology provides an unique expereicne of weaving in and out. By offsetting the inner core, the apartment and placed with the circulation. There is no Nails and Joints used in building the Pavilion. The Timber used is unseasoned douglas fr and larch wood. They are cross- stacked with the stacking timber so as to let the wood be dried. After the expo, the wood are sold to different Country. The Wood are held together by the increased comperssion by the helical spring. By increaseing compression of the vertical force, friction also increased so as to hold the wall together. By No Nails and Joints Case Study Case: Swiss Pavilion, Peter Zumthor By Investigating the bending and Twisting properties of the glue laminated wood, we discovered that it can create various pattern my hanging them together as an screen walL. It can helps to create opennings and also the direction of the opennnings and thus control the direction of the vision. The system also developed to form structure, not only for the screen wall. It becomes foorplate, steps and also furniture. Lamellas System Prototype Material: Plywood, Lamination Inner Layer Lamellas Sturcture Lammellas Beam Lammellas Outer Layer Lammellas From the Prototype, it can be clearly seen that the building can be formed by created loops and allow the whole building constructed by using the system. The project is aimed to provide a crack between the two original building, by doing so, it can allow more sunlight to come into the building, moreover, the Crack can be acted as a new public space which allow people to climb out to the roof cafe which are expendable to the terraces of the Li Long House to create a new relaxing Area. Design of the building are basically started with creating section of the building, by using different section as the spacial realationship, adapating different quality of the fascade and create the ultimate form of the building, which can allowed the artist to work, to exhibit and also allow the urban residents to get relaxed, so as to activate the area. This three important vertical grid forming the network of the plug-in city. In this project, by twirling the grid, it creates another circulation and the circulation goes up to the building to form the new urban centre. Other Work Material Pavilion 3D Body Pixelation House - Powers of Ten iRest Pavilion Material Pavilion Material: Bamboo Screen Crit Room, Hong Kong Year 1 Semester 1 Guidance Tutor: Nanako Umemoto, Jesse Reiser The Workshop lasts for one week which is started by making a framework with tracing the body motion movement. By using Cardboard to trace the body motion and then building an envelop which is the bamboo screen to cover the framework as the envelop. Our Group chose to use the sushi bamboo rolls to make the pavilion because of its fexibility and interlocking system. 3D Body Pixelation Material: Paper Body Year 1 Semester 1 Tutor: Giulia Foscori Inspired by the sea urchin, the body movement can be recorded by the pixelation. As the 3 dimensional cubes when bending and moving, they will be contracted or extended because of different curvature. The different kinds of grid on the body is because the fner the grid, the fner the record of the movement. So the fner grid is applied to the part which is in a greater movment. House - Powers of Ten House Design Peel Street, Central, Hong Kong Year 1 Semester 2 Tutor: John C.H. Lin By Studying the Power of Ten and Eames house, Scale is very important to architecture. This project is aimed to study the relationship about different scale of grid and the architecture. By having the courtyard at the centre and varying different kind of grid to different furniture or up to the playing landscape or even the programme. iRest Pavilion 1: 20 Model Material: MDF The Bund, Shanghai, China Year 3 Semester 1 Tutor: Michael Peng
