Chvez Wins New Term in Venezuela, Holding Off Surge by Opposition - New York Times

Jorge Silva/Reuters President Hugo Chvez, who faced down his strongest challenge in over a decade, celebrated Sunday night in Caracas. CARACAS, Venezuela President Hugo Chvez, long a fiery foe of Washington, won reelection on Sunday, facing down cancer and the strongest electoral challenge of his nearly 14 years in office and gaining a new mandate to deepen his socialist revolution. Voters lined up in Caracas on Sunday to choose between President Hugo Chvez and Henrique Capriles Radonski. Though his margin of victory was much narrower than in past elections, he still won handily. With 90 percent of the votes tallied, Mr. Chvez received 54 percent, to 45 percent for his opponent, Henrique Capriles Radonski, the national election council said. Fireworks erupted in Caracas after the news, and Chvez supporters celebrated in the streets. This is a country full of love, Caravayo Mercedes, 50, said

Capriles supporters bursting into tears at his campaign headquarters as the news sank in. The youthful state governor put on a brave face, celebrating his "house-by-house" campaign as the start of a long road to changing the direction of the country. "I hope a political movement that has been in power for 14 years understands that almost half the country does not agree with it," a subdued and tired-looking Capriles told crestfallen supporters. Chavez's victory was considerably slimmer than his win of 25 percentage points in 2006, reflecting anger at his failure to fix basic problems such as crime, blackouts and corruption. Record turnout of 80 percent on Sunday will boost Chavez's democratic credentials, though critics said his use of state resources made a mockery of fairness during the campaign. WHAT NEXT? After heavy campaign spending, South America's biggest oil exporter faces growing pressure to devalue its currency in 2013, likely spurring inflation that has been a top complaint of Chavez sympathizers. In the past, Chavez has taken advantage of election wins to press forward with radical reforms. His often-capricious

nationalizations may now turn to some untouched corners of Venezuela's banking, food and health industries. Cancer, though, could change that. The constitution says if an incumbent steps down in the first four years of a six-year term, a new vote would be called. Under such a scenario, Capriles or another opposition candidate would have another crack at power. During a year's treatment starting in mid-2011, Chavez endured three operations for two cancerous tumors, and chemotherapy that left him bald, exhausted and fearing death at his lowest point. He wrongly declared himself cured once, and repeated that in July after a recurrence, prompting skepticism from doctors who say that at least two years must pass before a cancer patient can be given a clean bill of health. Chavez has looked bloated and at times exhausted in recent months, but he ran a surprisingly energetic end to his campaign, even managing to dance, sing and strum a guitar at rallies. Any sign of a downturn in his health in the future would stoke a succession debate in the ruling Socialist Party. Congress head Diosdado Cabello, Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro

and Vice President Elias Jaua all look well-placed for a potential push for leadership. But none of Chavez's allies come anywhere near his popularity, so if there were to be another election, Capriles could be a favorite after a widely praised campaign that has made him wellknown across the nation of 29 million people. Though the 40-year-old Capriles is the once-rudderless opposition's best leader of the Chavez era, his position is not guaranteed. There are other young political figures including Zulia state governor Pablo Perez and telegenic former Caracas district mayor Leopoldo Lopez - waiting in the wings. STATE ELECTIONS AHEAD Now, Capriles and other leaders of the Democratic Unity coalition must dust themselves off and prepare for state governorship elections in December, when they will hope at least to increase the opposition's influence at the local level. Chavez's new six-year term begins on January 10. His latest election win continues a remarkable story that began with his birth on July 28, 1954 in a mud hut belonging to his grandmother in the rural village of Sabaneta. VENEZUELA'S page 8

temperment, he said. A former soldier, he called the election a perfect battle. Still, after a spirited campaign, the polarizing president finds himself governing a changed country. He is an ailing and politically weakened winner facing an emboldened opposition that grew stronger and more confident as the voting neared, and that held out hope that an upset victory was within reach. Mr. Chvez gave no indication Sunday night that the strong showing by the opposition would cause him to govern in a different way than before. He invited his opponents to give up a way of thinking that has led them to deny everything that is good in Venezuela, adding, Venezuela is not a catastrophe Venezuela today is the best Venezuela weve had in 200 years. When he finished speaking, he wiped sweat from his face with a bright red handkerchief and waved the yellow, blue and red national flag. Mr. Chvez said during the campaign that he would move forward even more aggressively in a new six-year term to create his version of socialism in Venezuela, although his pledges were short on specifics. His health, though, remains a question mark. He has undergone several rounds of treatment for cancer in the last 15 months, but has refused to make public essential details of his illness. If he overcomes the disease and serves out his new term to its end

in 2019, he will have been in power for two full decades. Toward the end of the campaign, facing pressure from Mr. Capriles, he pledged to make his government more efficient and to pay more attention to the quality of government programs like education. He even made appeals for the middle class and the opposition to join in his revolution. But Mr. Chvez spent much of the year insulting and trying to provoke Mr. Capriles and his followers. And on Sunday night, he had to face the fact that the people he taunted as squalid good -for-nothings, little Yankees and fascists, turned out to be nearly half the electorate. As the oppositions momentum grew, Mr. Chvezs insults seemed to lose their sting. By the end of the campaign, young people in Caracas were wearing colorful T-shirts that said majunche or good-for-nothing, Mr. Chvezs favorite taunt. Mr. Capriles was subdued on Sunday night, congratulating Mr. Chvez and saying he hoped the president would see the result as the expression today of a country with two visions, and to be president means working to solve the problems of all Venezuelans. He appeared poised to carry on his fight in the elections for state governors in December. You should all feel proud, do not feel defeated, he told supporters. Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, a research institute in Washington,

called the presidential election a fundamental turning point. He said Mr. Chvez was going to have to deal with a very different society than he dealt with in his last term, a society thats awakened and more organized and more confident. Even so, the opposition is a fragile coalition with a history of destructive infighting, especially after an election defeat. Mr. Capriles will have to keep this fractious amalgam of parties from the left, right and center together in order to take advantage of the new ground they have gained. The opposition has more power, it feels more support, said Elsi Fernandes, a schoolteacher, who voted for Mr. Capriles on Sunday morning in Catia, a poor neighborhood in Caracas. The difference is that were not going to stay with our arms crossed. The turnout was more than 80 percent, the highest in decades, the election council said. People stood in line for hours, although the voting appeared in most cases to run smoothly. Venezuela uses a touch-screen electronic voting system, and voters are identified with a digital thumbprint reader; technical problems at some polling places caused long delays and, in some, a resort to backup paper ballots. Polling places were told to keep working until everyone in line at closing time had a chance to vote. Venezuela is mired in problems, including out-of-control violent crime, crumbling roads and bridges, and power blackouts that

regularly plague much of the country outside the capital. Oil production, the countrys mainstay, has plateaued in recent years, and other exports have not picked up the slack. The overall economy grew this year, largely because of a huge pre-election boost in government spending, but clouds loom. A devaluation of the Venezuelan currency, the bolvar, is widely seen as inevitable, and inflation remains stubbornly high. Mr. Chvez has trumpeted his programs to help the poor, and has pointed to a sharp reduction in the number of people living in poverty. But he has governed during a phenomenal rise in oil prices, which have soared from $10 in 1998, the year before he took office, to more than $100 in recent years and the high $80s now, pouring huge amounts of revenue into Venezuela. Mr. Capriles, who has served as a legislator, mayor and governor, campaigned almost nonstop, seeking to contrast his energetic style and youth with the reduced schedule of Mr. Chvez, who received a diagnosis of cancer in 2011 and is obviously less robust than in the past. Mr. Chvez has kept most details of his condition secret, refusing to say exactly what kind of cancer he has or where in his body it is. He received chemotherapy last summer after an operation to remove a tumor, but the cancer returned and he had another operation in February, followed by radiation therapy. The

operations and treatments were performed in Cuba, taking Mr. Chvez out of Venezuela for extended periods. His health, and whether he was well enough to serve a new sixyear term, always loomed over the campaign, but it receded as an issue as Mr. Chvez gradually increased his public appearances. Still, he never threw himself into campaigning at the frenzied pace of Mr. Capriles, and he often appeared to be saving his energy. Opposition to Mr. Chvez has long been divided and easily manipulated by Mr. Chvez, a master politician who kept his rivals off balance. Mr. Capriles changed that. He crisscrossed the country, campaigning in places long considered bastions of support for Mr. Chvez, including urban slums and poor rural areas. He told voters that he was the future and Mr. Chvez the past. Mr. Chvez dismissed Mr. Capriles as an unworthy opponent, accusing him of lying about wanting to continue Mr. Chvezs social programs. He called Mr. Capriles a right-wing oligarch in disguise who sought to bring back the bad old days of rule by the rich. In Catia, Mara Elena Severine, 59, who works as a cleaner in a bank, said that Mr. Chvez was still as fresh a candidate as when he first ran in 1998. She lives in a rental apartment but hopes someday to be given a new home government -built home. CHVEZ page 6

Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, Syria is locked in a civil war, peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are moribund, and anti-American protests have erupted in several countries. Attackers linked to al-Qaida killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, last month, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. The Republican has given several foreign policy speeches throughout the campaign, including one in Reno, Nev., ahead of a weeklong trip abroad in the summer. That trip was fraught, with Romney offending his British hosts by questioning their security preparations for the

Olympic Games and raising hackles among Palestinians who charged him with racism after he said culture was part of the reason Israelis were more economically successful than the neighboring Palestinians. In the fall, Romney faced criticism for his hurried and harsh reaction to news of protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the near-simultaneous attacks in Libya. Before the administration knew of Stevens' death, Romney criticized Obama for sympathizing with the attackers. In the aftermath, top Republicans including Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the 2008 presidential nominee urged Romney to give a speech laying out his vision for U.S. foreign policy. The Obama campaign dismissed Romney's planned Monday address as a rehashed attempt to fix past blunders. "We are not going to be lectured by someone who's been an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy every time he sticks his toe in the foreign policy waters," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. The campaign prepared a TV ad calling Romney "reckless" and "amateurish" on foreign policy questions. Obama's aides also insisted Romney's

speech included few specifics that were markedly different from the president's own record. While Obama has held an edge in polls on handling foreign policy issues, Republican aides say the Benghazi attack and ensuing questions about possible intelligence failures and lax security at the Libya consulate has given Romney a new opportunity to criticize the president. Now, following a strong debate performance, Romney will give the speech at the alma mater of former Secretary of State George Marshall, the architect of the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe in the wake of World War II. In the conference call previewing the speech, aides pointed to that connection to illustrate Romney's vision of leadership and engagement on the world stage. The advisers cast Romney as part of a long tradition of statesmen beginning with former President Harry Truman; adviser Rich Williamson said Romney would offer a "bipartisan" approach while aide Eliot Cohen referred to Romney as "very much in the mainstream of foreign policy." He joined the army and spent years plotting before a failed coup in 1992 against President Carlos Andres Perez. On his way into jail, wearing a red military beret that was to become his trademark, Chavez gave a two-minute televised speech admitting that his revolution had failed "for now." The speech electrified the nation and launched his political career. Pardoned in 1994, Chavez began crisscrossing the country sharing his vision and eventually shocking the political elite by sweeping to victory at the ballot box in 1998. With private media and business leaders opposed to his rule, Chavez was briefly toppled by army dissidents and street protests in 2002 - but returned two days

later thanks to military loyalists and popular counterdemonstrations. He also survived an economically crippling oil strike. Chavez's win will probably mean more foreign investment from politically allied countries such as China, Russia, Iran and Belarus, while Western investors are more cautious. Relations with Washington are also likely to remain on edge, though Venezuelan oil has continued to flow to the United States over the years despite the diplomatic tension. Panic of the Progressives

Bruce Thornton (FrontPage Magazine)
Submitted at 10/7/2012 11:55:42 PM

The past is never dead, William Faulkner said, its not even past. The progressives fury over Obamas meltdown in last weeks debate, and their desperate efforts to get him reelected by any means possible, have to be understood in the context of the long history of the lefts attempt to impose its ideology on the United States. Though successful at capturing the universities, schools, popular culture, and most churches, the left still lusts for the presidency, where the real power lies to change America in line with their ideology. Yet for the last four decades, the left has seen what appears to be victory slip from its grasp, as their presidential standard-bearer either lost the election or betrayed their ideals once in office. Start in 1972. The left successfully hijacked the Democratic party and imposed its ideological aims on the partys platform: creeping socialism, dirigiste economic policy, radical egalitarianism, income redistribution, a balkanizing identity politics, institutionalized assaults on traditional morality and religion, and a foreign policy predicated on the global malignity and oppressive policies of the United States. Unfortunately for the left, America wasnt ready for such a radical transformation, and

George McGovern lost to Richard Nixon by 23 points. Yet within a year, the media-hyped Watergate scandal mortally wounded Nixon, who was replaced by the ineffectual Gerald Ford. Then in 1975, the anti-war left was seemingly vindicated by the collapse of South Vietnam in the face of a massive invasion by the North Vietnamese with the support of the Soviets and the Chinese. The truth, of course, was very different. The U.S. had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by cutting the South off from air support and foreign aid. Yet the perception fostered by the sympathetic media was that the left had been right: America had fought an unjust, neo-imperialist war against a nationalist movement supported by a majority of the Vietnamese, a war disguised as resistance to communist aggression. Believing the endemic corruption and tyranny of America had been made manifest both domestically and abroad, the left was sure its chance had come to finish the work started in 1972. Enter Jimmy Carter in 1976, a one-term governor of Georgia with scant national experience. Yet Carter was the perfect Trojan horse: a Southern evangelical Christian who could appeal to traditional conservative constituencies. Once in office, however, Carters presidency was marked equally by incompetence and leftish ideology, his policies

in the Middle East, the Shah of Iran, was abandoned to the tender mercies of the jihadist Ayatollah Khomeini. Soon followed the storming of our embassy and the taking of American hostages, 52 of whom were held for 444 days. economy allowed once again a southern governor to come to the rescue. Even better, unlike the dour, self-righteous Jimmy Carter, the New Democrat babyboomer Bill Clinton was cool, a draft-dodger, skirt-chaser, dopesmoker, and saxophone player. More important, he was a brilliant politician who could feel your pain and connect with voters much more intimately than the self-righteous scold Carter ever could. At the start of his term, Clinton seemed to deliver on the progressive agenda. He started work on creating government-run health care, the progressive Holy Grail, he improved the position of homosexuals in the military, he increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans, and he expanded entitlements such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Then came the debacle of the midterm elections, when Republicans seized control of both houses of Congress. Clinton responded, of course, by his now legendary triangulation, tacking to the right. At the start of his second term he announced, The era of big government is over. He committed a mortal sin for progressives: he cooperated with Republicans in reforming welfare, striking at the heart of progressive environmental determinism by recognizing the corruption of character that follows absolving individuals of personal responsibility. He signed off on legislation eliminating two provisions of the Glass-Steagall

act, which had restricted banks from getting involved in securities, and he lowered the capital gains rate from 28% to 20%. Clinton then crippled the remainder of his presidency with the humiliating scandal created by his juvenile hijinks with a White House intern, becoming only the second president to be impeached by the House of Representatives. Once more, the left had been betrayed by its political great hope. Yet waiting in the wings was Vice President Al Gore, a progressive true believer and prophet seemingly free of the character flaws that had compromised Clintons presidency. But the disputed 2000 electionstolen, progressives rationalized, by George Bush and the Supreme Courts conservativesbrought to power another Republican, this one even more hateful than Ronald Reagan. Reagan, after all, was from an earlier generation who had missed out on getting his consciousness raised by the progressive takeover of the culture in the 60s. But George Bush was a baby-boomer, a privileged, partying frat-boy who, as the leftist myth has it, found Jesus and conservatism and parlayed his family connections to take control of the White House. But the wars in Afghanistan and then Iraq, and the seeming revival of the anti-war movement, reanimated the old progressive myth from the 60s, when the left stopped another unjust neoimperialist war. Yet in 2004, the

Democrats nominated John Kerry, one of the Senates most left-wing members, but an incompetent campaigner full of rich-liberal hauteur and utterly lacking in charisma. Once more, the progressives had to spend four more years in the political wilderness. Then in 2008 the progressive messiah arrived. A left-wing Dr. Frankenstein could not have created a candidate more perfect than Barack Obama. He was nominally black, articulate and bright and clean and a nicelooking guy, as Joe Biden put it, lacking the frightening funk of a Jesse Jackson. He was Columbia and Harvard educated, and endowed with a photogenic family. More important, unlike Kerry or Carter, he possessed a seemingly Clintonesque ability to present political bromides and slogans with a winning smile. Best of all, he was staunchly progressive, his whole adult life before 2008 spent in the belly of the leftist beast: universities and Alinsky-inspired community organizing, with two-years worth of service in the U.S. Senate, where he was one of its most liberal members, railing against the 2006 surge in Iraq, which he called a reckless escalation redolent of Vietnam. Provided with the political Teflon created by white guilt and the yearning for racial and political reconciliation that he exploited in his speeches, and coddled by a protective media, Obama overcame the usually toxic effects

of extreme liberalism on presidential candidates. So the media went all-in for Obama, ignoring or dismissing the troubling details from his past like his grades in college, his incomplete health records, his friendship with unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers, and his 20 years spent in his self-confessed spiritual guide Jeremiah Wrights racist, anti-American church. Even his betrayal of progressive goals like closing down Guantanamo and quickly ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan did not damp the progressive ardor. He partially delivered on the leftist Holy Grail of nationalized health care, ramming through Obamacare with sleazy politicking the media studiously ignored. He went on the international apology tour, confessing Americas past sins and validating the old leftist indictment of America as a global villain. He dismissed American exceptionalism, and instead extolled the virtues of multilateral diplomacy and U.N. internationalism presumably scorned by his trigger-happy cowboy predecessor. He also proscribed waterboarding, the most effective interrogation technique we had for extracting useful intelligence, but decried as torture by the left. He did ramp up drone attacks, another progressive mortal sin, but one ignored by the same media that meticulously documented every one of Bushs alleged transgressions of international

law. But this backsliding, along with other lapses such as maintaining rendition and other Bush-era policies like the Patriot Act, could all be forgiven, acceptable compromises necessary to win their standardbearer another term, when without the pressure of reelection he could be more flexible, as he told the Russians. So when the reelection campaign started, the media shifted from their usual ideological bias to outright partisanship. They ignored or played down anything remotely damaging to Obama, from Joe Bidens surreal gaffes to the attempt to cover up the disastrous mistakes that led to our ambassador being murdered in Benghazi, thus deflecting attention from Obamas failed foreign policy. Then came the debate. Without a friendly chorus to preach to and a cheerleading media to act as a filter, Obama was revealed to be what he had been all along: a mediocre mind, a terrible politician, and an arrogant narcissist who could only smirk and grimace as Mitt Romney took him apart. At that point, 40 years of progressive frustration and betrayal erupted into hysterical rage. The possibility of Obamas defeat and yet another repudiation of progressive ideology suddenly became more real. No amount of media spin, from Al Gores altitude sickness excuse to Bob PANIC page 13

The Obama Advertising Strategy

Ben Shapiro (FrontPage Magazine)
Submitted at 10/7/2012 11:50:50 PM

Last week, Expedia released a web ad featuring an older Jewish man, Arnie Goldstein, deciding to take a trip. Wheres he traveling? Why, to the lesbian wedding of his daughter, of course! This is not the dream I had for my daughter, he narrates. Coming out to the wedding from back east, I had some real apprehensions about it. Whats this going to look like, two girls getting married? You have to make a decision. Are you going to have a daughter that youre going to maintain a very wonderful relationship with for the rest of your life? Or are you going to lose that child? Now, this sounds like a very serious moral quandary. But no, its just an ad for an online travel agency. All that trepidation just seemed to go away, says the dad. That was a big turning point. Walking Jill down the aisle Judy and I were just swelling with emotion. You come to terms with it and you say its a very natural order of things in your life, and its supposed to be that way. Whether or not its supposed to be that way is up for debate certainly thousands of years of human society tend to argue the opposite. But in advertising, its clear that pandering works. Theres a reason that Oreo has endorsed same-sex marriage with

a six-layer rainbow cookie and the slogan Proudly Support Love! Pandering to particular communities works. This is something the advertising community has always known: know your audience, and market to it. Its why your satellite dish carries 205 channels, even though you only watch four of them. Somewhere, theres some lonely old shut-in desperate to watch Lifetime. And Lifetime is there to

pander to her. Where we all used to watch NBC, ABC, or CBS, now dad watches ESPN, son watches SPIKE, daughter watches MTV, and mom watches Oxygen. And gay friend watches LOGO or Showtime. None of which is to argue that choice should be limited. If you want to shop at Expedia because they seem to like lesbian weddings, more power to you. But there is no question that our

common morality has been fragmented by a marketing machine geared toward communities instead of individuals. All of which is fine in the context of product sales. The biggest problem is that in todays modern politics, marketing strategies have been adapted to fit politics. Thus the Obama campaign strongly resembles your cable package: African Americans for Obama,

Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders for Obama, Catholics for Obama, Educators for Obama, Environmentalists for Obama, Jewish Americans for Obama, Latinos for Obama, LGBT Americans for Obama, Native Americans for Obama, Nurses for Obama, Parents for Obama, People of Faith for Obama, People With Disabilities for OBAMA page 13

Obama, Rural Americans for Obama, Seniors for Obama, Small Business Owners for Obama, Sportsmen for Obama, Veterans & Military Families for Obama, Women for Obama, Young Americans for Obama. All of those are real groups on Obamas website. And thats sad. When political campaigns encourage you to vote based on identity politics rather than who you believe will represent America best, the concept of deliberative democracy breaks down. The founders understood that faction was perhaps the greatest danger to any republic; thats why they focused on interest counteracting interest, so that in order for anything major to

happen, Americans would have to think beyond their own personal interests. Thats why the founders built a system of checks and balances. But the progressive left did away with that system. They decided that the governmental action on behalf of discrete and insular minorities, to use the lefts favored legal phrase, was the most important task of the government. To achieve it, Americans would continue to vote along lines of identity politics but the system would now have no checks or balances. Politics should require either a people who think in terms of the greater good, or a government built to filter out parochialism. Our government today has

neither. We have become an Expedia government: pandering to each group, and forgetting to serve the whole. Freedom Center pamphlets now available on Kindle: Click here. Woodwards made-up foreign policy crisis, could cover up the debacle of Obamas performance. Like children who fear they might not get what they want, the media could only throw a tantrum and attack their messiah for revealing the feet of clay they had so desperately kept hidden. Now the progressives are panicking. They cant create a better candidate than Obama has been for smuggling progressive ideology under the guise of soothing centrism. And they cant

stand the thought of yet another competent Republican whose term will illustrate once again the real-world failures of progressive utopianism. What this history of 40 years of dashed hopes and abject failure tells us is that from now until election day, the desperate Dems and their media errand boys will use every dirty trick to defeat Romney and preserve their dream to fundamentally transform America. Alteryx has opened a big dataanalytics apps studio for people who do not necessarily have a deep knowledge of data science. The service is available as part of Alteryx 8.0, the analytics providers latest release. The intent is to make data analytics as accessible as a consumer application makes its service. I tried playing with the apps. I used a Twitter tool to track tweets about Oracle. The results were relatively decent. A number of the apps in the studio are for the retail market, but there are also those that can be used for any business. For instance, there is a U.S. Census app for conducting demographic analysis. Heres an example of a retail app: People may use the apps, collect and share data with colleagues similar to the experience in a consumer app store. It also includes a desktop app builder. George Mathew, president and chief operating officer of Alteryx, said the intent is to create a service that is not just the domain

of a small community of data scientists. More so, its for the 2.5 million data analysts in the market who can use the tools to drive big data analytics into any kind of an organization. Alteryx represents a trend with big data-service providers to take the information and expertise of data geeks and make it accessible through an app. For instance, Prior Knowledge, a TechCrunch Disrupt finalist, has developed a way for app developers to add a level of predictive analytics without the need to have deep knowledge of statistical analysis. The expertise is built into the Prior Knowledge technology. And on Friday, I featured Lytics, a service that tackles the problem that comes with getting value out of data from multiple sources such as mobile environments, the web, email, social, third-party APIs and commerce environments. Lytics customers use it to optimize pricing and inventory and multiple other aspects of the business that can draw from data to improve the queries and results.

Hey Girl: Meet Juniper, The Monthly Subscription Of MustHaves For That Time Of The Month
Colleen Taylor (TechCrunch)
Submitted at 10/8/2012 12:00:05 AM

It is starting to seem like theres a startup providing subscription delivery services for just about everything: Razors, snacks, kids items, makeup, underwear, DIY craft tools, even condoms and sex toys. Some of these things are necessities, but many of them are not exactly must-haves but still, people are loving the monthly subscription e-commerce model. The newest entrant in this space is Juniper, a startup that is providing monthly deliveries of items that a huge segment of the population absolutely needs on a monthly basis: Tampons and sanitary napkins.

Its a topic that always makes people blush a bit, so Junipers business model sounds funny at first, but when you start to think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The vast majority of adult women out there need these items once a month, but shopping for them is always a chore and potentially embarrassing you never want to run into, say, a professional acquaintance while youre buying a box of maximum absorbency Tampax and a giant bag of Peanut M&Ms at Walgreens. So Juniper handles it all for you. For $28, every 28 days (or longer or shorter, depending on personal preference) Juniper sends the tampons of your choice in a discreet box along with a handful of pads and pantiliners and a

curated selection of goodies such as chocolate, tea, and sweets. As with all subscription e-commerce startups, the tech angle here is Junipers data and inventory management and the level of personalization it provides to each user. Juniper, which is based in San Francisco and currently bootstrapped with a staff of three, just launched last week. Cofounder and CEO Lynn Tao stopped by TechCrunch TV to talk to us a bit about the company and show us a Juniper Box in person. Watch the video above to hear about where the concept for Juniper came from and how the company plans to grow in the months ahead.

California's Taking Emergency Action To End Its Gas Price Nightmare

Gas prices have exploded in California, surging 50 cents per gallon in just one week to an alltime high of $4.614. The state's gas supply has been squeezed by refinery outages as well as EPA requirements that

prevent certain blends of gasoline from being sold before November. However, the LA Times Stuart Pfeifer reports that California governor Jerry Brown is moving to suspend those requirements. "Gas prices in California have risen to their highest levels ever, consumers and small businesses," with unacceptable cost impacts on Brown said in a statement.

"I am directing the Air Resources Board to immediately take whatever steps are necessary to allow an early transition to winter -blend gasoline." An analyst Pfeifer spoke to said the move could cause gas prices to fall by 10 to 15 cents within days. SEE ALSO: This Is What An Oil

Merkel Protected by 6,000 Police; Expect Huge Anti-Austerity Protest; Greece Needs Time and Money (And Something Else)
noreply@blogger.com (Mike Mish Shedlock) (Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis)
Submitted at 10/7/2012 8:21:00 PM

German chancellor Angela Merkel is visiting Greece this week in an alleged show of solidarity. Reuters notes it will take 6,000 police to protect her. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will tell Greeks she wants to keep their country in the euro when she visits Athens this week, but she faces a hostile reception from a people worn down by years of austerity and recession. Many Greeks blame Merkel, who has publicly chastised them for much of the past three years, for the nation's plight. Opponents, some of whom have caricatured her as a bullying Nazi, have promised protests on Tuesday during her first visit to Greece since the euro zone crisis erupted there in 2009. "She does not come to support Greece, which her policies have brought to the brink. She comes to save the corrupt, disgraced and servile political system," said Alexis Tsipras, who leads the opposition Syriza alliance. "We will give her the welcome she deserves." About 6,000 policemen will be

deployed in the capital for her 6hour visit, turning the city centre into a no-go zone for protest marches planned by labour unions and opposition parties. "We don't want her here," said Yannis Georgiou, 72, who has seen his pension cut by one third. "We will take to the streets against austerity and against the government. Maybe Merkel will hear something and see what we're going through." Solidarity? Really? Is Merkel's visit really a show of solidarity? Solidarity between whom? Between politicians conspiring to screw Greeks for the benefit of banks? Merkel Arrival in Athens to Be Met by Anti-Austerity Protesters Bloomberg reports Merkel Arrival in Athens to Be Met by Anti-Austerity Protesters Mr. Samaras said we should welcome Mrs. Merkel as she deserves, said Alexis Tsipras, the head of Syriza party, which finished second in the June elections and has urged workers, the unemployed and young people, to join the rallies. We completely agree. Samaras has warned that soaring unemployment and political unrest risk the kind of upheaval

that undermined the Weimar Republic in post-World War I Germany and ushered in the Nazis. His coalition is currently negotiating a new round of budget cuts to unlock the next aid payment to keep the country afloat. GSEE and ADEDY, the umbrella organizations for private and public-sector unions, have called for a three-hour walkout tomorrow in the Athens metropolitan area and a rally in the center of the capital. From the nationalist Golden Dawn Party, which evokes Adolf Hitlers Nazis with their stiff-armed salutes and free-food drives for pure Greeks, to the Greek Communist Party, Merkel is persona non grata. Tsipras urged Samaras to show Merkel the real Greece: The 40 patients for each nurse, and then see if she asks for more state employees to be sacked. I propose she visit a commercial street so she can see the padlocks on stores. And then she can propose more austerity measures. The Independent Greeks, formed by lawmakers who broke from Samarass New Democracy party, made the demand Germany pay reparations part of their election

campaign in May and June. Reparations Petition Now the fourth-largest parliamentary group, Independent Greeks have called for a protest outside the German Embassy in Athens during the chancellors visit. The German ambassador will be handed a petition outlining the partys opposition to Merkel transforming Greece into a German protectorate and calling for war reparations and the return of an occupation loan, the party said. The Greek Finance Ministry has set up a committee to calculate for the first time the countrys World War II claim against Germany. Estimates for the claims range. A group of 28 lawmakers who petitioned parliament on the issue in February said it was 54 billion euros; the Golden Dawn party estimates 510 billion euros. Germany paid 115 million deutsche marks to Greek victims of Nazi crimes under a 1960 treaty, in addition to funds paid to victims of forced labor under the Third Reich, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke told reporters in 2010. Germanys Constitutional Court ruled in March 2006 it didnt have to pay compensation to

individuals seeking damages over war crimes committed during World War II. Very Risky Maneuver Samaras says Greece needs time and money. He fails to mention that Greece also needs a mountain of reforms and an exit from the eurozone. Greece has no chance of recovery as long as it is subject to the whims of the Troika. The trip is a very risky maneuver by Merkel, and it is not about solidarity, at least with the average citizen of Greece. By now it should be perfectly clear that Merkel does not give a rat's ass about Greece or Greek citizens. Rather, Merkel's sole concern is in regards to preservation of her legacy. If the trip blows up in her face, it is exactly what she deserves. Dishonored is something special. It's a self-contained first brick in what is sure to become a larger universe; a stealth action game that lets you play as a creeping assassin, or abandon that notion and go through it as a first-person shooter with mystical powers. Don't want to kill anybody? That's a perfectly executable idea. There are so many options that revisiting the full story more than once for various outcomes is part of the experience. You are Corvo Attano, royal protector to the unmarried Empress Jessamine Kaldwin and her daughter Emily. It is

immediately apparent that extreme care and effort went into the setting of Dunwall, a fantastical city overrun by a ratspread plague, but it's not like the city of Rapture was to BioShock. BioShock fully explores the story

of Rapture, it is the story of Rapture. Dishonored, on the other hand, is not the story of Dunwall it is merely set there. There are many elements emphasized regarding life in Dunwall, but hardly any of them

are explored in this specific story. It creates a bit of dissonance over time, since set pieces and locales you'd swear should be included are not. This is all to say that Dishonored is the specific story of Corvo Attano and his reaction to the conspiracy against Empress Kaldwin. either with or without probiotics and/or a repeat FMT. Antibiotics Without Probiotics Can Be a Dangerous Proposition Kaitlin had received nine rounds of antibiotics, so it's no wonder such a dangerous infection could get foothold in her colon. In this particular case, the fecal transplant likely saved her life. However, I would dissuade you from thinking this procedure is a magical route to fix less than life threatening conditions. Furthermore, it's important to understand that you have the power to prevent such a dangerous condition from occurring in the first place. It would certainly be nice if more doctors understood the importance of reseeding the gut with probiotics during and after a course of antibiotics, to reduce the health risks to their patients. However, as in so many other instances, many doctors still overlook this critical step, and this is where knowledge and selfresponsibility comes into play. Any time you take an antibiotic, it is important to take probiotics to repopulate the beneficial bacteria in your gut that are killed by the antibiotic along with the pathogenic bacteria. And you certainly don't need a doctor's prescription or permission for this.

If you're in a hospital setting, you're not likely to be served fermented foods, but you could have a family member or friend bring some in, or ask your doctor to sign off on a probiotics supplement. Outside a hospital setting, your best bet is to incorporate traditionally fermented foods in your diet, so you're constantly maintaining a healthy bacterial balance. Other Infections that Can Be Treated with Probiotics Clostridium difficile infections are very serious, and since the cure rate with beneficial bacteria is so high for this type of infection, it can give you an idea of the power of probiotics for other, far less lethal ailments. For example, another type of infection that is far more common than C. diff. is Candida albicans. An overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast, can cause a variety of chronic health problems in both men and women. Under normal circumstances Candida albicans is a harmless part of your skin, intestines, and for women, your vagina. But Candida cells develop rapidly, and if your system is out of balance from eating unhealthy foods, taking certain prescription drugs, or fighting an illness for example, Candida can quickly grow out of control. Vaginal yeast infections tend to

occur when the normal acidity of a woman's vagina changes, allowing the yeast to multiply. It's estimated that up to 75 percent of women have had at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime, which typically is accompanied by intense itching, burning with urination and sometimes a thick, white discharge. Up to 80 million Americans 70 percent of them women suffer from yeast-related problems, and if you suffer from yeast infections (especially if they're recurrent) you should also be on the watch for other symptoms of Candida overgrowth, such as: Chronic fatigue Weight gain Food allergies Irritable bowel syndrome Migraines PMS As with all yeast-related problems, the infection occurs because your system has become run down or out of balance, allowing the Candida that already exists in your body to multiply out of control, causing illness. You may also fall into the trap of treating the infection with an over -the-counter anti-fungal cream, and then assuming that when the symptoms disappear the problem is cured. However, these creams only treat the symptoms and do nothing about the underlying EMERGENCY page 31

disorders. The researchers believe the beneficial impact of choline on lowering cortisol may protect the baby later in life from mental health conditions, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, the higher choline intake led to changes in epigenetic markers in the fetus. Specifically, it affected markers that regulate the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis, which controls hormone production and activity. The higher intake of choline contributed to a more stable HPA axis, which in turn meant lower cortisol levels in the fetus. The changes in fetal genetic expression will likely continue into adulthood, where they play a role in disease prevention. Epigenetic Changes May Last for Generations One of the most intriguing aspects of epigenetics is that these changes are often passed down through generations. This was first shown by the research of Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., M.D., who conducted studies on cats in the 1930s. He found that cats fed a healthy, raw-food diet thrived, while those fed on a primarily cooked-meat diet developed degenerative diseases and those changes continued on through

three generations. Each generation of "junk-food" cats got progressively sicker, until they could no longer reproduce and eventually died off completely by the fourth generation. Just this year, a study on rats showed those exposed to chemicals or foods that raise estrogen levels during pregnancy produce daughters that have a higher than normal risk for breast cancer and that risk is passed on to the next two generations. 3 It was not genetic mutations that were passed on, but rather epigenetic alterations that modulate the expression of your genes, similar to what was found in the FASEB Journal study. You Have the Ability to Change Inherited Epigenetic Alterations The good news about all of this is that even if you inherited a certain increased disease risk from your mother or grandmother (or you think you passed one on to your child), it is not set in stone. As you age, your genome does not change but your epigenome changes dramatically, especially during critical periods of life, such as adolescence. It is influenced by physical and emotional stresses, and lifestyle factors, which,

depending on their effects, may either optimize your genetic expression for health or make it favor disease development. There are literally new epigenetic discoveries being made every day, and it's becoming quite clear that eating healthy foods is one of the most powerful steps you can take to optimize your genetic expression. Certain foods, such as broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and onions contain substances that activate tumor suppressor genes and deactivate cancer-associated genes (oncogenes). And now we see that choline appears to influence cortisol production in utero. Your best bet is to take advantage of the many epigenetic influencers in your diet by eating a wide variety of whole foods For additional tips, I suggest you read through my comprehensive and recently revised nutrition plan, which will give tools for eating healthy, dealing with stress, and living a lifestyle that will support your epigenetic health. yeast overgrowth that caused the problem to begin with. How to Harness Your Gut Bacteria for Better Health Do you suffer from gas and bloating? Constipation or diarrhea? Fatigue? Headaches? Sugar cravings? All of these are signs that unhealthy bacteria of one type or another have taken over too much real estate in your gut, which is actually quite common considering how vulnerable your gut bacteria are to environmental insults. It's important to realize that your lifestyle can and does influence your gut flora on a daily basis. Therefore, to protect your microflora, you'll want to avoid: Antibiotics Chlorinated water Antibacterial soap Agricultural chemicals Pollution Poor diet is another enemy to healthy gut bacteria. Sugar is enemy number one, as it actually nourishes the bad or pathogenic bacteria, yeast, and fungi in your gut. Hence, dramatically limiting or eliminating sugar and fructose is an essential step to optimize your gut health. Processed foods also promote bad bacteria partly due to the high fructose content in most processed foods, but also because of the processing, which essentially "kills" the food.

One of the major side benefits of eating a healthy diet like the one described in my nutrition plan is that it helps your beneficial gut bacteria to flourish. A critical part of a healthful diet is fermented foods, as they will actively "reseed" your body with good bacteria, and can do so far more effectively and inexpensively than a probiotic supplement. It's unusual to find a probiotic supplement containing more than 10 billion colony-forming units. But when my team tested fermented vegetables produced by probiotic starter cultures, they had 10 trillion colony-forming units of bacteria. Literally, one serving of vegetables was equal to an entire bottle of a high potency probiotic! So clearly, you're far better off using fermented foods. Again, when choosing fermented foods, steer clear of pasteurized versions, as pasteurization will destroy many of the naturally-occurring probiotics. Examples of traditionally fermented foods include: Fermented vegetables Lassi (an Indian yoghurt drink, traditionally enjoyed before dinner) Fermented milk, such as kefir(like fermented vegetables, a quart of unpasteurized kefir also has far more active bacteria than you can get from a probiotic supplement)

Panic of the Progressives

Bruce Thornton (FrontPage Magazine FrontPage)

No amount of media spin, from Al Gores altitude sickness excuse to Bob PANIC page 38

An Incriminating Timeline: Obama Administration and Libya (VIDEO)

Helle Dale (The Foundry: Conservative Policy News Blog from The Heritage Foundation)
Submitted at 10/7/2012 11:01:54 PM

[embedded content] The latest incriminating information on the U.S. consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya indicates that the State Department turned down a request for additional security from concerned U.S. embassy staff. New evidence shows there were security threats in Libya in the months prior to the deadly September 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. Despite these threats, the State Department left its personnel there to fend for themselves. And when the terrorist attack did take place, the Obama Administration peddled the ridiculous story that an offensive, amateurish, anti-Islam YouTube video was to blame in order to avoid characterizing the murders of four Americans as terrorism. On October 2, a letter was sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (RCA) and Jason Chaffetz (RUT), Chairman of the National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations

Subcommittee. The letter detailed 13 known security threats against U.S. facilities in Libya in the six months prior to September 11. On October 10, the committee will hold a hearing on events in Libya and seek answers from the State Department. Also on October 10, The Heritage Foundation will host a public panel discussion on the events in Libya titled, Intelligence and Security Failure: Attacks in Benghazi and Across the Middle East Reveal Ongoing Threat of Terrorism. To help our readers follow the path to tragedy on September 11 and its aftermath, below is a chronology of key events: April 6: IED thrown over the fence of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. April 11: Gun battle erupts between armed groups two-and-ahalf miles from the U.S. Consulate, including rocketpropelled grenades. April 27: Two South African contractors are kidnapped by armed men, released unharmed. May 1: Deputy Commander of U.S. Embassy Tripolis Local Guard Force is carjacked, beaten, and detained by armed youth. May 1: British Embassy in Tripoli is attacked by a violent mob and set on fire. Other NATO embassies attacked as well.

May 3: The State Department declines a request from personnel concerned about security at the U.S. Embassy in Libya for a DC-3 plane to take them around the country. May 22: Two rocket-propelled grenades are fired at the Benghazi office of the International Committee of the Red Cross, less than 1 mile from the U.S. Consulate. June 6: A large IED destroys part of the security perimeter of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. Creates hole big enough for 40 men to go through. June 10: A car carrying the British ambassador is attacked in Tripoli. Two bodyguards injured. Late June: The building of the International Red Cross attacked again and closed down, leaving the U.S. flag as the only international one still flying in Benghazi, an obvious target. August 6: Armed assailants carjack a vehicle with diplomatic plates operated by U.S. personnel. September 8: A local security officer in Benghazi warns American officials about deteriorating security. September 11: Protesters attack the U.S. Cairo embassy. U.S. Embassy releases statement and tweets sympathizing with Muslim protesters/attackers. September 11: U.S. Consulate in

Benghazi, Libya is attacked, Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans are killed. September 12: Secretary Clinton and President Obama issue statements condemning both the video and the attacks. September 12: U.S. intelligence agencies have enough evidence to conclude a terrorist attack was involved. September 13: Press Secretary Jay Carney condemns video and violence at a news conference. September 14: Carney denies Administration had actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent. September 14: The bodies of slain Americans return to Andrews Air Force Base. President Obama again blames the YouTube video. September 16: U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice appears on Sunday talk shows and says the attacks were provoked by the video, exclusively. September 16: Libyan President Mohamed Magarief says, no doubt that this [attack] was preplanned, predetermined. September 17: State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland refuses to call attacks an act of terror. September 19: CNN reports

having found Ambassador Stevenss diary, which indicates concern about security threats in Benghazi. September 19: Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Matthew Olsen tells Congress the attack in Libya was terrorism. September 20: Carney tries to back up Olsen, says it was selfevident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. September 20: Obama refuses to call attack terrorism, citing insufficient information. September 21: Secretary of State Clinton, at meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister, says, What happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. September 25: On ABCs The View, Obama says, we dont have all of the information yet so we are still gathering. David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? The Obama Advertising Strategy

Ben Shapiro (FrontPage Magazine FrontPage)

And Lifetime is there to pander to her. Where we all used to watch NBC, ABC, or CBS,

now dad watches ESPN, son watches SPIKE, daughter watches MTV, and mom watches Oxygen. And gay friend watches LOGO or Showtime. None of which is to argue that choice should be limited. If you want to shop at Expedia because they seem to like lesbian weddings, more power to you. But there is no question that our common morality has been fragmented by a marketing machine geared toward communities instead of

individuals. All of which is fine in the context of product sales. The biggest problem is that in todays modern politics, marketing strategies have been adapted to fit politics. Thus the Obama campaign strongly resembles your cable package: African Americans for Obama, Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders for Obama, Catholics for Obama, Educators for Obama, Environmentalists for Obama, Jewish Americans for Obama, Latinos for Obama, LGBT

Americans for Obama, Native Americans for Obama, Nurses for Obama, Parents for Obama, People of Faith for Obama, People With Disabilities for Obama, Rural Americans for Obama, Seniors for Obama, Small Business Owners for Obama, Sportsmen for Obama, Veterans & Military Families for Obama, Women for Obama, Young Americans for Obama. Obamas website. And thats sad. When political campaigns encourage you to vote based on identity politics rather than who you believe will represent America best, the concept of deliberative democracy breaks down. The founders understood that faction was perhaps the greatest danger to any republic; thats why they focused on interest counteracting interest, so that in order for anything major to happen, Americans would have to think beyond their own personal interests. Thats why the founders built a system of checks and balances. But the progressive left did away with that system. They decided that the governmental action on behalf of discrete and insular minorities, to use the lefts

favored legal phrase, was the most important task of the government. To achieve it, Americans would continue to vote along lines of identity politics but the system would now have no checks or balances. Politics should require either a people who think in terms of the greater good, or a government built to filter out parochialism. Our government today has neither.

And they cant stand the thought of yet another competent Republican whose term will illustrate once again the

real-world failures of progressive utopianism. What this history of 40 years of dashed hopes and abject failure tells us is that from now until election day, the desperate Dems and their media errand boys will use every dirty trick to defeat Romney and preserve their dream to fundamentally transform America. has acquired another, equally urgent purposereassuring his Hollywood supporters that hes fighting to win the race and hes poised for a comeback in the next televised forum with former Gov. Mitt Romney Everyone is in shock, said one long-time Democratic activist. No one can understand what happened. At the very least, several longtime Obama supporters told THR, the chief executive should expect some directorial notes on how to tailor his performance to televisions split screen. Everyone with a connection to the president is reaching out to him, said another veteran Dem. At the end of the day, the best coach he has is himself. *** CBSs Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer kicked off the conversation with the obvious question what happened? The president showed up with the intent of answering questions and having a discussion, an honest discussion of where we will go as a country, and Romney showed up to deliver a performance, and he delivered a very good performance, Axelrod said. It was completely un-rooted in fact, it was completely un-rooted in the positions hes taken before and he

spent 90 minutes trying to undo two years of campaigning on that stage, but he did it very well. Obama, Axelrod said, was a little taken aback by the brazenness with which Gov. Romney walked away from his past positions and his record. *** Expectations have changed after the greatest audience in the history of presidential debates saw a veritable empty suit or empty chair on stage, without a helpful media follow-up question, or a make no mistake about it refrain to be had. Over 60 million now expect little at all from their president in the debate, so Obama will benefit from dismal expectations by just showing up as the incumbent and being addressed as Mr. President. The pressure on Romney to be even more impressive mounts. The realization that another rant by a liberal commentator could cement the reputation of Obama as an incompetent and add to the image of a hopelessly inept president will temper post-debate media anger. The moderator cannot afford to be laissez-faire in the fashion of Jim Lehrer, and will prove far more partisan. The media pressure to discount the importance of the debates themselves will increase.

But despite all that, the nation has now seen that the conservative critique of Barack Obama fluff without substance was frighteningly accurate. *** The first, and the most dangerous threat to Obamas re-election, is a critical mass of voters saying this: Barack Obama, nice man, good father, great that we finally elected an African-American. He tried hard. But you know what? I just want to try something new, even if I dont know it will work. That sentiment is deadly for Obama. As long as Romney didnt seem like a credible alternative, Obama kept it at bay, even though the economy has stagnated. But Romney reawakened that mood by the confident and crisp way he talked about the mechanics of how jobs are created through start-ups, small businesses and entrepreneurship and the catalytic power of markets. His presentation crackled with a freshness and a sense of possibility that was completely missing in Obamas monotone discussion of health care, deficits and government programs. And where Obama had a chance to talk about how his own green jobs initiative has actually spurred all kinds of innovations and start-ups,

he whiffed. (As some have noted, it is too bad the debate rules didnt allow him to phone a friend.) *** Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus expressed optimism that Rep. You saw inspiration, heart, preparedness from Mitt Romney and you saw a president that came in unprepared and uninspiring. You know what, maybe Clint Eastwood was right, said Priebus. *** Click the image to watch. *** It was one of the most inept performances by an incumbent president that Ive ever seen, said TIME Magazine columnist Joe Klein. He said that Obamas

performance was indicative of his deferential demeanor and his aversion towards public fights. However, Klein said that Obama opted for unilateral disarmament in the face of Romneys attacks on his record. MSNBC host S.E. Cupp said that her contacts within the Romney campaign see this debate as facilitating a reset of the campaign in three parts. First, they wanted a fight, which they got. Second, the debate ignited the attentions of marginally interested swing voters. Finally, they feel that the debate allowed disaffected Obama voters from 2008 the license to take a second look at Romney. They see this as a hat trick moving forward, said Cupp. This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/contentonly/faq.php#publishers. Their decisions about the safety of their children override the concerns of the students in a case like this. But Im also not sure how much extra safety they are getting out of the deal in exchange for the potential anxiety being induced. And more than anything, it looks like the schools are simply looking for a way to qualify for bigger cuts of the tax dollar pie by proving how many bodies they can shove into the classrooms each week. With more than 90 per cent of the ballot counted, election officials claim Chavez has won beyond doubt, with rival Henrique Capriles managing just 44,97 per cent of the vote. Thank you God! Thank you to everyone, Chavez said on his Twitter account. Chavez will take office for a sixyear term beginning February 2013. The election appears to have seen an impressive turnout, with Tibisay Lucena, the National Electoral Council president, stating 81 percent of nearly 19 million registered voters, cast ballots. (Photo from twitter.com user @PresidencialVen) Capriles has congratulated Chavez on his victory and told followers not to feel defeated. "

We have planted many seeds across Venezuela and I know that these seeds are going to produce many trees,'' he told supporters in a speech late Sunday, AP reports. Joyful crowds of Chavez supporters cheered as the results were announced. Fireworks have been heard around the capital,

operational mission. There was also a personal touch: chocolatevanilla swirl ice cream tucked in a freezer for the three station residents. The company's unmanned Falcon rocket roared into the night sky right on time, putting SpaceX on track to reach the space station Wednesday. The complex was soaring southwest of Tasmania when the Falcon took flight. Officials declared the launch a success, despite a problem with one of the nine first-stage engines. The rocket put Dragon in its intended orbit, said the billionaire founder and chief executive officer of SpaceX, Elon Musk. "It's driving its way to station, so that's just awesome," noted SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell. In more good news, a piece of space junk was no longer threatening the station, and NASA could focus entirely on the delivery mission. NASA is counting on private business to restock the space station, now that the shuttles have retired to museums. The space agency has a $1.6 billion contract with SpaceX for 12 resupply missions. Especially exciting for NASA is

the fact that the Dragon will return twice as much cargo as it took up, including a stockpile of astronauts' blood and urine samples. The samples -- nearly 500 of them -- have been stashed in freezers since Atlantis made the last shuttle flight in July 2011. The Dragon will spend close to three weeks at the space station before being released and parachuting into the Pacific at the end of October. By then, the space station should be back up to a full crew of six. None of the Russian, European or Japanese cargo ships can bring anything back; they're destroyed during re-entry. The Russian Soyuz crew capsules have limited room for anything besides people. Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX -- owned by PayPal co-founder Musk -- is working to convert its unmanned Dragon capsules into vessels that could carry astronauts to the space station in three years. Other U.S. companies also are vying to carry crews. Americans must ride Russian rockets to orbit in the meantime, for a steep price. Musk, who monitored the launch from SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., called the capsules Dragon after the magical

Puff to get back at critics who, a decade ago, considered his effort a fantasy. The name Falcon comes from the Millennium Falcon starship of "Star Wars" fame. An estimated 2,400 guests jammed the launching center to see the Falcon, with its Dragon, come to life for SpaceX's first official, operational supply mission. Across the country at SpaceX headquarters, about 1,000 employees watched via TV and webcast. It was no apparition. "Just over a year after the retirement of the space shuttle, we have returned space station cargo resupply missions to U.S. soil," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr. SpaceX is shooting for its next supply run in January. Another company looking to haul space station cargo, Virginia's Orbital Sciences Corp., hopes to launch a solo test flight in December and a demo mission to the station early next year. Every time SpaceX or a competitor flies successfully, Bolden told reporters, "that gives the nonbelievers one more opportunity to get on board and root for us" and help enable

commercial launches for space station astronauts. This will further free NASA up to aim for points beyond low-Earth orbit, like Mars. "This was a big night," Bolden concluded. GOP, Dems Fight to Define Post-Debate Opinion

(FOXNews.com)
Submitted at 10/8/2012 12:40:29 AM

The fight to define the final weeks of the election and the impact of the last weeks presidential debate resumed Sunday with Republicans arguing President Obamas economic policies have failed and Democrats saying Mitt Romney has yet to provide a specific plan to fix the economy. Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte told Fox News Sunday the recent dip in unemployment was largely the result of jobless Americans taking part-time work and that participation in the U.S. job market is at a historically low rate. You cannot support a family on part-time pay, said Ayotte, R.N.H., who called Mitt Romneys performance in the debate Wednesday a reset of the presidential campaign. Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs was among several Democrats who acknowledged Sunday the economy was still growing too slowly. But he repeated the Obama teams oftenused point about 31 straight weeks of job growth after inheriting an economy losing

hundreds of thousands of jobs per month. Are we growing as fast as wed like to? Gibbs asked on NBCs Meet the Press. No. But it takes a long time to dig out of this avalanche of tremendously bad decisions that preceded the Obama presidency. Gibbs also argued that the debate showed Romneys plan is to go back to a failed economic theory of tax cuts for the very rich. Gibbs also said on ABCs This

Week that the foundations of Romneys successful debate Wednesday night were fundamentally dishonest. Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie on the same show said Romney laid out a plan for turning this economy around getting things moving again. He also chided the Obama campaign staffers response to the debate. They remind me a little bit of a 7 -year-old losing a checker game,

and then instead of being frustrated at the outcome, they sweep the board off the table, Gillespie said. Gibbs, along with Maryland Democratic Gov. Martin OMalley, also argued that Romney has yet to explain how he will cut taxes by roughly $4.8 trillion without increasing the federal deficit and increasing taxes on the middle class. Though Romney has promised to close corporate loopholes, they

say he has yet to be specific about such a plan. Ayotte said Romney said in the debate that we would go to Congress for a partisan agreement on how to accomplish his plan. Election Day is five weeks away, with President Obama leading in the battleground states. However, polls following the debate show that lead lessening. OMalley also repeatedly blamed GOP, page 44

A ministerial meeting of EU leaders scheduled for Monday and Tuesday will be one of the key market drivers early in the week. Among the major macrostats to be released the coming week is Wednesdays Beige Book, the report by the Fed on current economic conditions, the Producers Price Index in the US, and the Producers Confidence Index by Michigan University, as well as industrial production in the EU on Friday. Asian stocks fell Monday as Europe's debt crisis continued to roil markets and the World Bank cut its growth forecasts for Asia. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.7% to 20,872.04. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.7 % to 1,980.71 and Australia's S&P/ASX200 lost

0.3% to 4,480.10. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China also fell. New Zealand's rose. Markets in Japan were closed for a public holiday. The World Bank cut this year's growth outlook for developing Asia-Pacific economies to 7.2% from its May forecast of 7.6%. The outlook for China, the regions biggest economy, was also downgraded. Now the bank expects its economy to grow 7.7 % in 2012, down from the previous May forecast of 8.2% growth. The bank cited weak global demand due to the lackluster US recovery and Europe's recession. Andrew Sullivan, principal sales trader at Piper Jaffray in Hong Kong, said protests in Spain and IMF concerns over Greece continue to worry investors. Tens of thousands of people marched in 56 Spanish cities Sunday to protest government budget cuts in a country experiencing its second recession

in three years and record high unemployment. Officials from the European Commission, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank are currently in Greece assessing the country's progress in fulfilling the terms for receiving aid. If their report doesn't clear the way for the payment of the next 31-billioneuro (US$40 billion) tranche of the country's bailout, Greece could be forced to default on its debts and perhaps leave the euro. Greece has warned that it will run out of money next month if it does not receive its next scheduled loan. Greece is caught in a deep recession, and has unemployment of nearly 25%. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to visit the country this week for the first time since the European debt crisis unfolded. Merkel is unpopular in Greece because her government has been instrumental in pushing Athens to make

austerity cuts in exchange for its bailout loans. The US job market report notwithstanding, the countrys stocks ended mixed on Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average added 0.2%, while the Nasdaq fell 0.4%. The S&P 500 ended little changed. European markets finished broadly higher on Friday with shares in France leading the region. The CAC 40 is up 1.64% while Germany's DAX is up 1.27% and London's FTSE 100 is up 0.74%. Google pulls in nearly $2 billion a year in YouTube advertising revenue, but that's still a drop in the bucket compared to the $60 billion earned by broadcast networks. To rely less on viral cat videos or "Gangnam Style" breakouts, the company has announced that it's advanced funds to content producers like

Jamie Oliver and Michael Cera to create 60 new original channels in France, the UK, Germany and the US. That's in addition to the 100 channels it already created last year, and Mountain View also said it would take that original launch up a notch in 2013 by providing even more funds to the most successful efforts by artists like Jay Z and Amy Poehler. The company didn't say exactly how much cash would be raining down
