Neolithic and Bronze Age Landscapes of North Mayo 2009: Glenulra Scatter Stratigraphic Report

1. General Information
1.1 Introduction
The following report outlines the results of salvage excavations carried out under the direction of Gretta Byrne in Glenulra townland, North Mayo in 1992 (Figure 1). The excavations concentrated on recovering finds and investigating an area disturbed by road construction. The site is identified as the Glenulra Scatter to avoid confusion with the Glenulra Enclosure, excavated by Caulfield. The salvage excavations took place over a five week period in July / August and 3 weeks in October 1992 under the direction of Gretta Byrne (92E140) Funding was provided by the O.P.W., who is now the owner of the land, to undertake a rescue excavation at that time. The excavation team were Marcus Redmond, Antonine Healy, Karen Mulcahy, PJ Mc Cann, Padraig Madden, Niamh Caulfield, Clare Scally, Eoin Sullivan and Tony Cocoran. A stratigraphic report was presented at the time (Byrne 1992) but the original excavation funding did not provide for post-excavation analysis, and as a consequence, it has been difficult to develop the archives for full publication. In 2009 grant support through INSTAR has enabled the Neolithic and Bronze Age Landscapes of North Mayo (NBNM) project to work on these materials and make considerable progress towards publication of the sites

1.2 NBNM: Background and Methodology

The Neolithic and Bronze Age Landscapes of North Mayo project aims to bring to full publication critically important aspects of the Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeology of North Mayo. The overarching aims of the project address four areas: Noel Dunnes survey work on the Pollatomish peninsula; Seamas Caulfields survey/excavation in Belderrig; survey and excavation by varied parties at Cide Fields; and Gretta Byrnes survey/excavation from Ballinglen to Rathlackan. Individually these are important sites and/or landscapes, taken as a whole they are of international significance in terms of understanding early agricultural communities in north-west Europe. Furthermore, the buried landscapes of the Cide Fields are iconic for Irish archaeology and a state candidate for World Heritage Site status. The project builds on the success of the Cide Fields work in outreach, and remedies the lack of full academic publication. Our model is for a three year project resulting in: - an academic monograph detailing results of survey, excavation and further specialist work - full excavation reports and archives deposited with the relevant authorities - a book targeted at the general public outlining the nature, significance and future of these archaeological landscapes At present, funding has been obtained for the first year of this project which focuses on preparing stratigraphic accounts of all of the excavations, archiving materials, generating basic catalogues and processing relevant samples. The enclosed reports outline the results of this project. The specific excavations included in this proposal are: Belderg Beg (Caulfield), Behy ( Nuallin), Glenulra Enclosure (Caulfield), Cide Visitor Centre (Byrne and Dunne), Glenulra Scatter (Byrne), Rathlackan Court Tomb (Byrne). Project partners include Seamas Caulfield, Gretta Byrne, Martin Downes, Noel Dunne and Graeme Warren (Project Coordinator). Grant support for 2009 enabled us to hire two research

assistants, Mr Stuart Rathbone and Mr David McIlreavy and a research fellow, Mr Patrick Walsh. These three researchers have been based in Belderrig from AugustNov 2009 The nature of the archives encountered by this phase of analysis varied. The earlier excavations took place in a different archaeological framework: single context recording was not carried out, and expectations of the scale and character of recording were very different to today. In general for the earlier excavations, the written archive is poor, but the recollections of the excavator, alongside a good photographic and drawn record, has enabled a good level of reconstruction of stratigraphy. The more recent excavations have a more complete archive, and here we have focused on synthesising the annual reports previously presented.

Illustrations: This phase of the project did not attempt to create any final illustrations for publication, consequently, the images reproduced here are not those that would accompany a final report. They include plates and a range of line drawings, some fully inked up, some still in pencil. In as far as is possible these images have been presented to a high standard, but many require formal digitising and standardisation which it has not been possible to undertake at this stage. Likewise, for some sites, an overall spatial plan has not been produced, and we rely on the original location maps produced by the excavators. Artefacts/Samples: as part of the analysis all artefacts and samples were catalogued by David McIlreavy. These catalogues are preliminary only, and in all instances the material requires specialist analysis. For lithics a broad classification was utilised by DMI comprising tools (formal retouched objects), blades/flakes/cores and finally small production waste (debitage, informally defined): these terminologies are not those used in standard lithic analysis. Ceramics, in particular, present some challenges, as many pieces are highly degraded. All artefacts are formally labelled and boxed according to NMI standard. Samples have been catalogued and a preliminary assessment of their quality made.

2. Site Location & Description

Mayo 1992:145 'Cide Fields', Glenulra G066389 SMR 006:03202 Location Glenulra is situated in the Barony of Tirawley in the Civil parish of Doonfeeny. This site is situated 2.5km southeast of the Cide Fields centre on the west facing slopes of the Glenulra Valley on a contour height of 110m. The modern landscape is dominated by bog, with some small pasture farming and some excavation of peat for domestic use. Further along the Glenulra river to the south there is a large expanse of modern planted woodland of spruce in Sralagagh townland. The north Mayo coast from Belderrig to Killala Bay is highly varied, with complex geological and geomorphological sequences. In the west extensively deformed preCambrian metamorphics form the core of the landscape (Sleeman 1992), which is characterised by rounded hills, sharp cliffs and bleak bog-filled basins and wet podsol soils. Approximately half way between Belderrig and the Cide Fields, these schists give way to a variety of Carboniferous limestones and sand/siltstones. Hill and

plateaux peat is present in the uplands, with blanket peat extending down the hills, but in the lowlands the land is of higher quality; with brown earth soils in the Ballyglass region and grey brown podzolic soils near Ballycastle. On the plateau east of Ballycastle bog and podzols dominate again. The Glenulra scatter lies within blanket bog dominated landscape, although the parent geology is Carboniferous.

Description of site This site was discovered when artefacts in flint, chert and quartz were noticed lying on the surface of a roadway which had been exteneded to give access to the bog for turf cutting. Prior to the archaeological excavations the entire surface of the roadway was excavated by machine. The area opened was 19 m long narrowing from 10m to 4m wide. The machine had excavated to the natural subsoil over most of the road surface, thus removing the archaeological strata. Much of the area was also churned up by the tractor traffic and erosion (Figure 2). Although a lot of the archaeological material was removed by the machine it is quite probable there may still be a substantial amount of archaeological material under the peat outside the extent of the excavation. Other pre-bog activity is in evidence 50m further north wards along the road way where substantial layers of charcoal and possible cultivation ridges are visible in the exposed road side (Byrne 1992). The scatter lies within the Cide field system, and is associated with with numerous court tombs (MA 006 021; MA 006-027; MA 006- 014) and other monuments. The site archive and excavation methodology This excavation was a salvage excavation of a road surface that had already been excavated by mechanical digger in order to extend an access road to provide a space for tractors and trailers to turn around for the removal of turf. The machine had penetrated into the soil layers beneath the peat and dumped the material on top of the adjacent turf bank. The area that was examined revealed a number of pieces of chert, flint and quartz. The road surface was covered in churned up soil, the result of a lot of traffic by tractors and trailers. This area was excavated by hand but very little undisturbed archaeological material remained (Figure 3). Very shallow spreads of charcoal rich soil were still present, and these were excavated by hand. Feature numbers were administered and descriptions are in the archive and are presented in this report. The extant archive is of a high standard and the basic interpretations here follow those of the original reports.

3. Results
3.1. Stratigraphy
The entire disturbed surface of the roadway was excavated, which involved a 19m long area narrowing from 10m to 4m wide. Approximately three-quarters of the machine spoilheap was inspected to recover finds, the remainder consisted of the upper layers of peat and would not be expected to contain archaeological material.. The excavations at The Glenulra scatter site consisted of a relatively simple stratigraphic sequence. A total of 14 contexts were identified within the area during the excavations carried out by Gretta Byrne in 1992. The numbers were listed in the 1992 excavation as F (Feature numbers). There were a group of shallow spreads which had been given the number F 5 at the time of the excavations. F5 describes a group of four spreads. The feature descriptions are taken from the directors account of the excavations. Measurements were taken from the site drawings where the features were recorded. In many instances these spreads run under the peat and

their full dimensions are not discernable. In some cases not all the exposed features were excavated, these remain in situ and backfilled. These are listed in Appendix One and more detailed descriptions are given in the following section. A final composite plan of the features has not yet been produced. Context Descriptions
Context F1: Peat Layer This context refers to the layer(s) of peat concealing the site prior to the excavation. It was not formally recorded. Originally the peat overlying the scatter site was c. 2 metres deep, but had been lowered by localised peat cutting. The uncut peat was over 2m deep on the east side and cutover to 0.5 -1m high on the south and west side. Context F2: Brown silt This was a fine dark brown silty soil around a collection of stones situated against the east baulk; it was up to 0.2m thick, and was undisturbed at the edges of the road at the southern terminal and extends underneath the peat There was a high concentration of stones up to 0.5m in size, and a number of finds including convex and concave scrapers in chert and flakes of chert and quartz. Context F3: charcoal rich soil Pebbly grey charcoal soil under the East Baulk at the North End of the site. Context F4: Charcoal Spread This is a charcoal spread in the centre of the site. It contains a medium brown charcoal soil with occasional small charcoal flecks, the charcoal being very fragmentary and brittle. F4 was very shallow throughout mostly less than 0.01mbut it had occasional pockets up to 0.02 0.03m in depth. A number of artefacts were recovered from the layer including several chert flakes and some chert debitage, some quartz was also recovered (although specialist analysis is needed to determine working), and two pieces of flint. A small amount of charcoal was selected from this deposit as sample No. 4. Context F5: Spreads This context appears on the plan as four separate small spread patches. The spreads are all the same context type and are grouped together as F5. The soil consisted of a light grey material with frequent charcoal inclusions and this probably extends under the uncut bog to the west of a stony area. Spread 1 0.6m n/s 0.7m e/w 1.5m from the west baulk. Spread 2 0.3m n/s 0.4m e/w 1m from the west baulk. Spread 3 1m n/s 0.2m e/w 2 m from the west baulk. Spread 4 0.5m n/s .5m e/w 3 m from the west baulk. Context F6: Charcoal rich soil This layer was located between the drain and west baulk on the south side of the site. It was a undisturbed brown layer with some charcoal flecks and extends for a short distance out from the baulk with remainder assumedly removed by machine. A light grey brown fine silty soil up to 0.2m deep with frequent small charcoal flecks. This layer had a number of stones loose within and on top of it. Context F7: Charcoal rich soil F7 is very similar to F6, with a slightly browner colour, and may be the same layer, found in the SW extension under the peat. Context F8: Stakehole A single stakehole was located close to the southwest edge of the road. It is 0.1m in diameter and 0.18m in depth narrowing towards the base. The south side is quite vertical but the north edge slopes southwards to the base. The stake hole is cut into the natural yellow brown stony subsoil F14. The fill was silty grey and charcoal flecked. It was overlain by F6 which was 0.12m deep at that point. Context F9: brown deposit This is a brown soil with occasional charcoal flecks, found underneath F7 in the eastern half of the SW extension Context F10: possible pit
Page 5 of 43

Neolithic and Bronze Age Landscapes of North Mayo 2009: Glenulra Scatter Stratigraphic Report

This is a grey deposit filling a small shallow irregular feature, possibly a pit, at the eastern end of the south west extension. At the north end of the feature it was a very dark grey silty charcoal soil but it was only 0.01 0.02m in depth. At the southern end it was a lighter grey and about 0.1m in depth. It underlies F9. Context F11: charcoal rich soil This is a sporadic charcoal soil layer which appears in patches throughout the eastern part of the site, under F2. This layer had no measurable depth and trowels away down to the natural. Context F12: light grey silt This is a patch of light grey silty soil with occasional pieces of charcoal located in the south west corner of the SW xtension of the site beneath a large stone which was in F7 The layer was not fully excavated. Context F13: light grey silt This is a layer similar to F12 a patch of light grey silty soil with occasional pieces of charcoal in the northern end of the south west extension of the site. It is located under F9 Context F14: Natural Stony brown hard compact clay, in places more yellow brown.

3.2 Finds
The majority of the finds recovered from the scatter site comprised flint, chert and quartz and rock crystal. Of the 1146 finds recorded from the scatter site, some 727 were chert (63.4% of the total assemblage), 295 were quartz/rock crystal (25.7% of the total assemblage), and 112 were flint (9.8% of the total assemblage). The chert assemblage comprised 727 artefacts, consisting mainly of unmodified flakes (397 pieces; 54.6% of the chert assemblage). Some 9 probable cores were recovered and 153 pieces of chert debitage. Altogether non tool types accounted for 559 of the 727 chert artefacts (76.8% of the assemblage). Recognisable tool types (168 pieces; 23.1% of chert artefacts) consisted of a number of blades, scrapers, some points and a leaf shaped arrowhead. Blades comprised the majority of the tool types recovered (65 examples). Within the chert assemblage 98 pieces were scrapers, which could be broken down into 44 concave scrapers, 28 convex scrapers, 25 end scrapers, and 1 side scraper. One broken leaf shaped arrowhead was recovered. The quartz and rock crystal assemblage comprised some 304 pieces; some 26.5% of the total finds assemblage. Quartz pieces outnumbered rock crystal by 243:61, although in both cases the assemblage was dominated by unmodified flakes, with little debitage noted in each case (however, given that most of the material was recovered from a disturbed context the amount of debitage recovered may have been detrimentally affected). Flint was represented by 112 pieces (9.8% of the total assemblage). The assemblage comprised some 5 cores (including 1 piece exhibiting possible burning) and 66 flakes (3 of which were burnt). A small number of debitage pieces (24) were also recovered. Six blades were recovered from the flint assemblage. Four convex scrapers and four concave scraper were recovered, along with one point. One pressure flaked projectile head was also recovered. One possible anvil stone with four indentations was also recovered. No ceramics were recovered from the site.

3.3. Samples
A total of 11 samples, of varied sizes, form part of the archive (See Appendix Five). These are in good condition and may provide material suitable for dating. Only one (sample five) is a bulk sample that is likely to provide broader palaeoenvironmental evidence, the others are picked selections of charcoal for dating purposes.

3.4 Dating
No radiocarbon dates have been obtained for this site. The lithics, especially the concave scrapers, suggest a Neolithic, and probably middle Neolithic age.

4.Glenulra Scatter: discussion

As noted above, the machine damage prior to the excavation had penetrated to the natural subsoil over most of the road surface, thus removing the majority of the archaeological strata. Furthermore, a large quantity of material was churned up by tractor traffic on the surface and by erosion. As was feared before excavation began, the basic shallowness of the soil meant that what remained at the time of the rescue excavation was the occasional intermittent, very shallow, spreads of grey charcoalrich soil in situ overlying the subsoil with only one possible stake hole on the site F8; the various layers and spreads in both the eastern edge and the SW extended area are also significant remains and in both sides extend under the baulk. The director believes that it is likely that a habitation site existed at this location, the evidence for which has largely been either removed by the digger or still remains under the unexcavated peat. The finds from the site may be the only resource available to generate discussion on the possible type of site that was here at Glenulra, and this scatter of lithics is particularly interesting because the overall character of the Neolithic landscape here at Cide is defined by the construction of the Neolithic walls and the megalithic tombs and the character of the finds is very similar to those found at both Ballyglass sites and also Rathlackan. It is very difficult at this stage to try and interpret the site here at Glenulra in advance of detailed finds analysis. Certainly, taken in isolation the site is not of great importance. Taken into the broader north Mayo landscape however it is very significant as it provides a further insight into the Neolithic patterns of the people in North Mayo.. At present only a tiny percentage of the pre bog landscape has been excavated which limits our ability to understand anything other than the very general layout of the sites as identified through survey. By investigating the finds site here at Glenulra the excavations advance our understanding of this complex landscape a little further.
